Ice Rink to Get Trial Run

December 8, 2014 by Matt Larson, Big Sioux Media

UPDATE:  Temperatures for the next few days are expected to be above normal, thus making the flooding/prepping of the ice rink impossible at this time.   If temperatures drop low enough to allow for the prepping, the ice rink will be able to happen.

An ice rink in Dell Rapids will get a trial run during the Christmas break.  During the city council meeting on Monday, December 1st, the Dell Rapids City Council voted in favor of giving an ice rink in Dell Rapids a trial run during the holiday season.  A Dell Rapids resident brought up the idea of an ice rink to the council during their regular meeting on November 17th.  The council at that time voted to table a decision about the ice rink until their next meeting to allow city administration to put together a plan.

City Administrator Justin Weiland proposed the idea of getting an ice rink ready for use during the Christmas and New Year’s holiday season.  After a trial run during that time, the city would then gather reaction from the public to determine if there was enough interest to justify maintaining the ice rink for the rest of the winter season.   The council voted in favor of this plan 6-1.

Jamie Fox

December 4, 2014 by Matt Larson, Big Sioux Media

Jamie FoxWe were blessed to have Jamie Con join our family on January 8, 1987 in Lewisville, TX. This beautiful blonde, bundle of joy was the first of two children born to Judy and Juden Peterson. Early in their childhood, Jamie and her brother Joshua were adopted by Anthony (Tony) Fox as the four of them built a life together.

During Jamie’s youth, she lived in Sioux Falls, SD but she enjoyed trips to Grandma and Grandpa Opland’s farm almost every weekend. Jamie was such a Tomboy! She loved to wrestle with her cousins and enjoyed the great outdoors. Jamie loved sports playing softball and volleyball, soccer with two traveling teams, Dakota Gold and Great Plains, and loved playing basketball on her school team and for SFABA. She graduated from Roosevelt High School in 2005. Jamie grew to be an independent fun loving young lady. She had a passion for caring for animals especially dogs and would rescue any that came her way whether it be MinPin or Pit Bull, Chihuahua or English Bull Dog, she would take it in and shower it with love. Jamie met and made a life together with Joseph Sorum. They have a wonderful and much loved son, David. David was the JOY of her life and she always put his care and security first in her thoughts and actions. They loved spending time together as a family outside fishing, boating, or just hanging out.

Jamie brought smiles to a multitude of elderly people and coworkers as she cared for them as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) in several nursing homes. She began that career at the age of 16 and continued on for the past 11 years. She always brightened days by sharing her smile, spark for life, caring spirit, and sense of humor with the residents. She also kept the staff on their toes because they never knew when she would pull a prank on them. Never lacking in ambition and drive, Jamie was also only two weeks away from completing her Marketing degree.

Blessed with sharing her life, laughter and love were her mother and father: Judy and Tony, brother: Joshua, significant other: Joseph, much loved son: David, and grandmother: Connie Opland. She will also be lovingly remembered by a multitude of others including aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.

At the age of 27, in Pelican Rapids MN, Jamie ended her journey in this life and reached her forever home. She is surrounded by those that preceded her in their journey home, her cousins: Aaron and Heath Opland, beloved Grandpa Bennett Opland, and Grandma Helen Fox.

Funeral services will begin at 2:00 PM Monday, December 8, 2014 at the Willow Creek Lutheran Cemetery, rural Dell Rapids. Visitation with the family present will be from 3-6:00 PM Sunday at the Minnehaha Funeral Home, Dell Rapids. Burial will be in the Willow Creek Cemetery.
