7-Run Inning Boosts Dell Rapids Baseball to Victory

April 18, 2015 by Matt Larson, Big Sioux Media

DRHS_Baseball_vsTV_4-17-15A seven-run fifth inning propelled Dell Rapids Baseball to an 11-2 victory over Tri-Valley in high school action at Rickeman Field in Dell Rapids on Friday, April 17th.

Tri-Valley scored right away in the top of the first inning.  Kyle Kretchmar hit a one-out triple down the right field line, and then Matt Prather drove him home with an RBI single to give Tri-Valley an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning.  Dell Rapids scored two times in the bottom half of the inning without a hit.  Josh Roemen and Casey Hansen both reached base on errors, and later scored in the inning after Tri-Valley committed three more errors in the inning.  Dell Rapids led 2-1 after the first inning.

Starting pitchers Brett Mogen (DR) and Logan Larsen (TV) cruised through the next few innings.  Mogen faced the minimum nine hitters over his next three innings, striking our four in that stretch.  Larsen held Dell Rapids hitless through his next three innings, and after the fourth inning, Dell Rapids maintained their 2-1 lead.

Mogen ran into a little trouble in the top of the fifth inning.  He walked the lead-off hitter Alex Van Asselt.  The next hitter, Kevin Cress, hit a sharp ground ball to short.  The force out at second could not be made, but an out was recorded at first.  Sheldon Hofer capitalized on the miscue and hit an RBI single that scored Van Asselt to tie the game.  Mogen was able to get out of the inning allowing only the one run, and the game was 2-2 heading into the bottom of the fifth.

That’s when the Dell Rapids offense erupted.  Kretchmar moved to the mound in relief of Larsen, and Dell Rapids sent 11 men to the plate scoring seven times.  Nate McKee had an RBI single, Matt Gillogly had a three-run triple, and Mogen, Ryan Geraets, and Carter Gullicksen also had RBIs in the inning.  The seven-run inning gave Dell Rapids a 9-2 lead after five innings.  Dell Rapids would add two more runs in the bottom of the sixth on RBI hits by Gillogly and Eddie Price.

Gillogly had two hits and four RBI in the game.  McKee finished with two singles and an RBI.  Roemen, Geraets, Price, and Gullicksen all collected singles in the game.

Mogen picked up the win pitching five innings, giving up two runs on three hits, striking out six, and walking four.  Trevor Pulscher pitched two innings of relief allowing just one hit and striking out three.  Larsen earned a no-decision giving up two runs, both unearned, on no hits, striking four and walking three.  Kretchmar took the loss pitching two innings giving up nine runs on eight hits while striking out three and walking three.

Dells Nursing and Rehab Center Adding Baseball Field

April 16, 2015 by Matt Larson, Big Sioux Media

DNRCBaseballField-2015Dell Rapids is getting a new baseball field.  Dells Nursing and Rehab Center is doing work to the northwest corner of their proper so baseball or softball can be played in that spot.

Chad Stroschein, owner of Dells Nursing and Rehab Center, approached the Dell Rapids Little League about the idea of creating this field in the open space by the facility last year after the baseball season had ended.  He noticed the difficulties in finding field time for the 30 to 40 youth baseball (ages 6-12), softball (ages 6-14), and T-ball (ages 4-5) teams Dell Rapids has every year.  The idea was met with excitement by all the board members.  As spring time approached, Stroschein, also a Dell Rapids Little League board member, again brought up the plans to make the space a playable field.

Work has been ongoing since the snow melt to get the field ready to go by the time youth baseball and softball seasons start at the end of May.  The extra field space will be used by Dell Rapids youth teams along with fields A, B and C at city park on the north side of the river, fields E and F on the south side of the river, Brown Park, and the St Mary field just east of St Mary School.

Not only will this help the youth leagues, it will be an added bonus to the residents who will be able to watch games all summer long, which Stroschein said they will enjoy all season.

Lillian “Lolly” Troff

April 14, 2015 by Matt Larson, Big Sioux Media

Lolly TroffLillian “Lolly” Troff, 75, of Trent passed away on Friday, April 10, 2015 at her home.  Her funeral service will be held on Wednesday, April 15, 2015 at 1:30 p.m. in the Messiah Lutheran Church of rural Flandreau. Interment will be in the Hillside Cemetery near Egan.  Visitation will begin at 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday, April 14, 2015 at Kahler Funeral Home, Dell Rapids.  The family will be present to greet friends from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Condolences may be left at www.kahlerfh.com.

Lillian Olson was born on April 4, 1940 at Jackson, MN the daughter of Otmer Levinas and Mable Evelyn (Nagel)  Olson.  She attended Jackson High School and graduated cosmetology school. Lolly married Robert “Bob” Troff May 24, 1965 in Sioux Falls, SD.  Bob and Lolly made their home in Trent, SD with Bob’s job in the grain business.  Later the couple established “Troff’s Corral” both training horses and hosting numerous professional level horse shows.  Lolly’s passions for horses as a young girl lead her into barrel racing, square-dancing on horseback and chuck-wagon racing.  Later, Bob and Lolly purchased the first farm east of Trent and raised beef cattle and horses.  Lolly was always actively involved in the livestock, farm management, gardening, and her family.  Lolly also worked in and out of hair styling.  She was known to cut many local’s hair and keep many ladies looking “pretty” in the community.

If you ever knew Lolly, she was truly “one-of-a-kind”.  She had a quick wit, was trustworthy and was known for her sharp tongue.   She was always ready to pour a cup of coffee and offer a meal.  She was a seamstress, gardener, and canner.  Lolly was a sharp-shooter with a rifle and much to her surprise, once became the SD State Arm-wrestling champion when she was 48 years old!  She had no grey zones; if you didn’t know where you stood with her, she told you.

Lolly was an “oak tree” as a mother.  She stood strong and loved her children, grandchildren, niece and nephews and others she encouraged and mentored.  She was incredibly passionate and compassionate for all animals.  Lolly is preceded in death by her husband Bob and her parents, Otmer and Mable. Those left to cherish her memory are her sister Nancy Gravley of Jackson, MN, children, Todd Fisher of Sioux Falls, Robin (Fisher) (Jon) Rowe, Kalamazoo, MI and Rodney Troff of Trent, SD; six grandchildren, Chelsea Cullen (AZ),  Caitlin Cullen (AZ),  Kasey Fisher  (OK),  Rachel  Bedell  (OR), Shelby Summers (CA) and Natalie Rowe (MI); and her niece and nephews.
