Cardinal Football Starts Season with a Loss to Canistota

August 30, 2015 by Matt Larson, Big Sioux Media

DRSMvsCAN_8-28-15_FB1In the season-opener for the Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal football team, the Canistota Hawks ruined an otherwise perfect night for football on Friday, August 28th, at Rickeman Field in Dell Rapids.  In a rematch of last year’s quarterfinal playoff game, the Canistota Hawks once again defeated the Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals, this time by a score of 36-0.

The Hawks got on the scoreboard early.  After taking the opening kickoff, Canistota scored with 10:06 left in the first quarter on a five-yard touchdown run by Jerad Nielsen to go ahead 6-0.  St Mary was forced into a three-and-out in their first possession, giving the ball right back to Canistota.  The Hawks had possession of the ball for almost the entire first quarter, but the St Mary defense held tough, allowing just the one touchdown in the first quarter.

Canistota was able to break through the Cardinal defense again in the second quarter with 8:31 to go when Nielsen again found the endzone, this time on an 18-yard run.  The two-point conversion was successful, and the Hawks went ahead 14-0.  Canistota had the ball again late in the second quarter and drove deep into Cardinal territory near halftime.  With just seconds remaining, Shay Jolley took the snap, handed the ball off to Jalen Kaufman, and Kaufman scored as time expired in the half to give Canistota a 20-0 lead at halftime. The St Mary Cardinals took the kickoff to begin the third quarter and looked to be building momentum as they drove deep into Hawk territory.  Josh Brown appeared to score on a 10-yard run, but the play was called back due to a holding penalty.  The penalty appeared to steal all momentum away from St Mary.  The Cardinals were unable to score, and the ball went back to Canistota on downs.  After each team traded interceptions, the Hawks scored again with 5:59 to go in the third quarter on a 29-yard touchdown pass from Jolley to Drew Seubert.   Jolley and Seubert connected again in the fourth quarter with 10:17 to go for the final score, this time on a 32-yard touchdown pass.

St Mary finished with a total of 118 yards of offense, while Canistota racked up 317 yards of offense.  Brown finished with 11 carries for 38 yards.  Garret Frost was 4-6 passing for 51 yards.  G. Frost also had a catch for 10 yards.  Jacob Glazier had two catches for 23 yards, and Casey Hansen had a catch for 20 yards.  Christian Schnieders led the defense with 10.5 tackles.  Dalton Houska had 9.5 tackles, a half sack, and a fumble recovery.  Jacob Frost finished with eight tackles and a half sack.  G. Frost tallied seven tackles and a half sack.

The loss drops the Cardinals to 0-1 on the season.  They will host Oldham-Ramona/Rutland on Friday, September 4th.  The game can be seen again on Big Sioux Media.

Dells Theater Showing Midwest Premiere of “Walt Before Mickey”

August 25, 2015 by Matt Larson, Big Sioux Media

WaltBeforeMickeyThe Midwest premiere of the new movie “Walt Before Mickey” will be held at the Logan Luxury Theatres in Mitchell, Huron and Dell Rapids on Friday, August 28.  The producers of the film, Armando Gutierrez and Arthur L. Bernstein, will be at all three locations for the festivities.  The film will show at all three theaters for one week Friday through Thursday, August 28-September 3.

The producers will arrive at the Dells Theatre at 6:30 p.m., Thursday, August 27th, for the 7:00 p.m. “Red Carpet Advance Showing” where Mayor Scott Fiegen will welcome the producers to Dell Rapids and honor them with a presentation.  The movie will be introduced by the producers who will also hold a question and answer discussion following the film.  The movie will begin its regular showings for the week on Friday, August 28.  The public is invited to the Thursday advance showing as well as all showings during the week.

Premiere festivities will also be held Friday at the Luxury 5 Cinemas in Mitchell and on Saturday at the Huron Luxury Cinemas in Huron.

“Walt Before Mickey” stars Jon Heder (“Napoleon Dynamite” and “Blades of Glory”) as Roy Disney.  Jodie Sweetin (from TV’s “Full House”) plays Walt’s young bride, Charlotte.  Thomas Ian Nicholas (“Rookie of the Year” and “American Pie”) plays the young Walt Disney.  David Henrie (“Mall Cop 2” and “Wizard of Waverly”) plays artist Rudy Ising.  Few people today realize the struggles and failures Walt went through before finally finding financial success before he created Mickey Mouse.  Walt assembled a team of animators who would lead animation for Disney and other studios for the next four decades.  It is an inspirational story of a young man’s vision and fight to succeed despite obstacles and unfair treatment by larger companies.  The producers, Gutierrez and Bernstein, also took roles in the film.

Gutierrez previously produced “Henry and Me” starring Richard Gere and “Ask Me Anything” starring Britt Robertson.  Gutierrez holds a graduate degree from Harvard.

Bernstein is an award winning filmmaker who has produced movies, TV shows and commercials.  He previously worked with Adam Sandler’s Happy Madison productions and with Burt Reynolds.  He has also produced or acted in many movies, TV shows and commercials.

Logan Luxury Theatres Corporation president Jeff Logan first met the producing partners at the Cinemacon Convention two years ago.  Logan worked with them over the past year to develop the plan for the midwest premiere over the past year.

City Council Decides on Engineering Firm for Waste Water Project

August 24, 2015 by Matt Larson, Big Sioux Media

DellRapidsTowerAfter a month-long battle, the Dell Rapids City Council finalized the engineer firm for the design of the new waste water treatment facility project during their regular meeting on Monday, August 17th.

Stockwell Engineers was first assigned to the project, however, during the city council meeting on July 20th, the Dell Rapids City Council voted to enter into a contract with DGR due to concerns of lack of experience with SAGR systems by Stockwell Engineers.  Jon Brown from Stockwell Engineers asked the council to reconsider their decision during the council’s meeting on August 1st.

Before discussions began during the latest meeting, City Administrator Justin Weiland said, “My recommendation to the council is to stay with DGR.  It’s in the best interest of the community to hire the firm that has the most qualifications and expertise.  In this specific area of engineering…DGR has the experience doing that.  They have a facility online that is a SAGR system, and they have designed multiple mechanical plants.”

Both Brown and Trent Bruce with DGR then fielded questions from the council members.  They both answered questions on the background, experience, and the team of engineers that would be completing the design for this project.

After both firms finished answering questions, City Councilman Mark Crisp said, “At this point, we started with Stockwell Engineers.  After the conversation that you and I had, Trent, you gave me confidence that I was making the right decision by letting Stockwell Engineers continue on with our waste water treatment facility plan.  I still stand with that, and I feel re-assured that you feel confident that Stockwell can do it.”

Crisp then made the motion to back out of the contract with DGR and enter into a contract with Stockwell Engineers.  Councilman Lee Burggraff seconded the motion.  The roll call vote was split down the middle with Crisp, Burggraff, Mike Geraets, and Paul Miles voting in favor of Stockwell Engineers.  Mike Sterud, Mary Klockman, Gary Haak, and David Sommerfeld voted nay.

Mayor Scott Fiegen broke the tie by voting in favor of staying with DGR, saying, “So based on the decision that the council made before and the contract we’re already in, my vote would be for DGR.”
