2015 All-State Choir Selections

Twelve Dell Rapids students will be participating in the 2015 South Dakota All-State Choir and Orchestra performance on Saturday, October 31st.  Dell Rapids High School had eight selections.  They are Veronica Fritz, Mikaela Stofferahn, Sydney Stofferahn, Elly Petrik, Micah Gleason, Josh Benda, James Lueders, and Ted DeLange.  Dell Rapids St Mary High School had four selections.  They are Zach Geraets, Jacob Eining, Courtney Geraets, and Cassy Geraets.

The 2015 South Dakota All-State Choir and Orchestra Concert will be held at the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center in Rapid City at 8:00 p.m. ct / 7:00 p.m. mt.

This year’s choir selections are “Gloria” from Mass in D  —  Antonin Dvorak, “I Will Lift Mine Eyes  —  Jake Runestad, “Baba Yetu”  —  Christopher Tin, “Come Mighty Father” —  Handel, Arr. Robert Hines, “Dance On My Heart”  —  Allen Koepke, “Water Is Wide”  —  Matthew and Shelly Armstrong, and “He’ll Make A Way”  — Byron Smith.  The combined choir and orchestra selections are “Star-Spangled Banner”  —  Francis Scott Key/John Stafford/arr. Dale Grotenhuis, “Battle Hymn of the Republic”  —  Arr. Wilhousky, and “Elijah: And Then Shall Your Light Break Forth” — Mendelssohn.

The guest conductor for this year’s performance is Dr. Peter Eklund from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in Lincoln, NE.

Cardinal Girls Cross Country DVC Champs

DRSM LogoThe Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal girls cross country team earned the Dakota Valley Conference title with a first place finish at the DVC meet held in White on Wednesday, October 7th.  The Cardinals finished with a team score of 13.  DeSmet was second with 23 points, Elkton-Lake Benton third with 29 points, and Arlington fourth with 36 points.

Four of the five Cardinal runners finished in the top 10.  Christina Vogel earned the individual DVC title placing first with a time of 21:09.  Ella Heinitz was sixth with a time of 21:48.  Tana Harrington placed eighth at 22:36, and Catherine Vogel was 10th with a time of 23:49.  Paige Bunkers finished the race with a time of 25:32.

Connor Libis finished fifth individually for the boys cross country team with a time of 19:23.  Drew Wood finished with a time of 22:08.

Hunter Griffen placed ninth in the JV race with a time of 13:30.46.  Thomas Eining had a time of 14:15.00.

The next meet for the Cardinals will be Wednesday, October 14th, for the Regional meet in Howard.

“Helping Kids Round First” in Need of Donations

HelpingKidsRoundFirstCraig Severtson of Flandreau founded an organization called “Helping Kids Round First”.  His organization helps out kids from the poorest country in Central America, Nicaragua.  He takes donated baseball equipment to aid the children.  It is the kids only ray of sunshine.

He is going to Nicaragua in about ten days and needs four more units to fill a container (40,000 lbs.).  He is asking for ANY baseball or softball items that you can donate.  It can be equipment or uniforms, shoes etc. whether used or new.

If you have anything to donate you can bring it to Dell Rapids Middle School office.

Tanagers Get Past Quarrier Volleyball

NewDRLogoThe Vermillion Tanagers defeated the Dell Rapids Quarrier volleyball team on Tuesday, October 6th, in Vermillion by scores of 25-22, 25-20, 25-15.  Emma Paul and Mikaela Stofferahn each had five kills in the match for Dell Rapids.  Hannah Welbig and Chloe Solbeg each contributed seven service points on the night.

Head coach Dale Solberg said, “Struggling would be an understatement.  Our minds right now are ‘taking on water’.  Doubt is creeping in, and we have to face that challenge.  The solution is to stay focused and continue to work hard and go toe-to-toe with our opponents.  Good things come from hard work and determination.  Adversity can be good if you have the correct mindset to deal with it.  I still believe, but what matters is that the team does.”

The Quarriers have now dropped eight matches in a row.  Dell Rapids’ record now drops to 5-12.  The Quarriers will travel on Thursday, October 8th, to play the Dakota Valley Panthers.

JV Results:

In the JV match, the Quarriers earned a match win in three games by scores of 23-25, 25-21, 15-8.  Leaders on the night included Tiffanie Dorale with 14 digs and seven kills.  Jayda Knuppe had seven kills, and Kenzie Gullickson finished with 15 digs.

C Team Results:

The C team picked up a win over the Tanagers by scores of 25-11, 21-25, 15-13.  Maria Jackson contributed to 18 points in the match.  Ashlee Lambert was part of eight points and had 10 digs.  Ravyn Hoffman finished with eight digs and seven assists.

Quarrier Boys Golf Place 4th at State

The Dell Rapids Quarrier boys golf team placed fourth at the 2015 State A Boys Golf Tournament in Milbank on Monday, October 5th, and Tuesday, October 6th.  The Quarriers finished with a two-day total of 684.  Aberdeen Roncalli won the team title with a team score of 660.  Parkston was second at 670, and Sisseton placed third at 683.

Ty Hoglund tied for third with a two-day score of 160.  Josh Parrot finished tied for 13th with a 168.  Jordan Kerns finished the tournament with a 180.  Mason Schmidt had a tw0-day total of 181, and Brent Eddy ended his tournament with a 188.

Head coach Mick Hoglund said, “I was happy with the way our golfers competed all the way to the end of the tournament, even when it looked like we weren’t going to win it all.  I believe that we shot our best golf on the last nine holes of the tournament with Brent shooting a 38, Jordan shooting a 39, Josh tossed in a 42, and Ty shooting a 36.  This was impressive, and it was a great way to end the season. I am proud that we competed until the end.”

Gabe Heller of Aberdeen Roncalli placed first with a 152.  Jacob Lee of Parkston was second at 155.

Cardinal Volleyball Gets Win over Freeman

DRSM LogoThe Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal volleyball team picked up a win over Freeman by scores of 25-9, 25-13, 22-25, 25-20 on Monday, October 5th, in Dell Rapids.

Cassy Geraets led the team from the service line with five ace serves.  Kennedi Mullaney had three, and Jackie Wolles finished the match with two.  Geraets also led the team in set assists with 18 on the night.  Kayla Scherff had nine kills to lead the Cardinals in attacks.  Sydney Cook and Mullaney both had six apiece.  Haley Michel finished with eight digs.  Wolles added four, and Adyn Heinricy had three.

The Cardinals improve to 2-15 on the year.  St Mary will travel to White to take on the Deubrook Area Dolphins on Thursday, October 8th.

Dakota Valley Cheer and Dance Invitational Results

The Dell Rapids Quarrier and Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal competitive cheer teams participated in the Dakota Valley Cheer and Dance Invitational on Saturday, October 3rd.  The Quarriers placed third with a score of 129.  The Cardinals placed fifth with a score of 111.50.  Dakota Valley won the event with a score of 139.50.  Bon Homme was second with a score of 131.5.

Dakota Valley was also crowned the dance grand champion with a score of 167.17.  Winner place second with a score of 136.00, and Gregory finished third with a 96.00.

Phyllis Karpinske

Phyllis KarpinskePhyllis A. Karpinske, age 87, of Watertown, SD, passed away on Sunday, September 27, 2015, at a care center in Watertown. Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 1, 2015, at the Crawford-Osthus Funeral Chapel in Watertown. Pastor Scott Dempster will officiate. The family is requested to meet at the chapel on Thursday by 1:30 p.m. for a prayer service.

Visitation will be at the Crawford-Osthus Funeral Chapel on Wednesday from 5 to 7 p.m. and prior to services at the chapel on Thursday. Condolences may be left at

Phyllis was born on February 03, 1928, in Wallace, SD, to Herman and Hustra (Brovold) Johnson. She attended country schools near Wallace. After her mother passed away, Phyllis helped in raising her two younger siblings. In 1947, Phyllis moved from Wallace to Watertown.

On September 18, 1948, Phyllis married Leo Karpinske in Willmar, MN. She raised four children. Phyllis worked various jobs in Watertown and made her career working at Minnesota Rubber for more than 20 years.

She was a member of St. Pauli Lutheran Church and the Machinist Union. Phyllis enjoyed knitting, sewing, baking, cooking, gardening, taking vacations and spending time with family, especially her children and grandchildren.

Phyllis is survived by three sons: Ralph Karpinske of Watertown, Floyd Karpinske of Albee, SD, and Curtis (Cathy) Karpinske of Watertown; one daughter, Janet (Bernie Pence) Lee, of Aberdeen, SD; 11 grandchildren; 45 great-grandchildren; one brother, Howard (Mila) Johnson, of Sioux Falls, SD; one sister, Betty Tiesen, of Dell Rapids, SD; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Leo; her twin grandsons; one great-granddaughter; her parents; two brothers; and two sisters.

Cardinal Football Lights up the Scoreboard

DRSMvsELB_FB_10-2-15The Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals lit up the scoreboard in Elkton on Friday, October 2nd, with a 60-22 win over the Elkton/Lake Benton Elks.   The Cardinals ended up scoring in every quarter in the game.

St Mary got out to an early 8-0 lead after a two-yard touchdown run by Christian Schnieders with 7:39 to go in the first quarter.  The Elks answered right back with 5:33 to go on a 26-yard touchdown pass from Blaine Hefti to Devin Sopko to make the score 8-6.  The Cardinals would have a 16-6 lead at the end of the first quarter as Josh Brown scored on a four-yard run with 2:51 left in the quarter.

St Mary scored the next two touchdowns in the second quarter.  The first score came with 11:02 to go on a 21-yard run by Schnieders.  The Cardinals scored again with 7:03 left in the half on an 11-yard run by Dalton Houska to go ahead 32-6.  Elkton/Lake Benton scored their second touchdown of the game with 4:49 to go when Hefti connected with Trevor Sik on a 38-yard touchdown pass to make the score 32-14.  St Mary added one more score in the second half with 3:07 to go on a 43-yard run by Brown to give the Cardinals a 40-14 halftime lead.

The Elks scored the first touchdown on the second half with 10:12 to go in the third quarter on a 25-yard pass from Hefti to Braden Nielsen making the score 40-22.  However, the Cardinals scored the final three touchdowns of the game.  Schnieders added another touchdown on a tw0-yard run. Brown scored for the third time on a 30-yard run in the fourth quarter, and Garret Frost scored on a 20-yard touchdown run.

St Mary finished with 486 rushing yards and 45 passing yards for a total of 531 yards of offense.  The Elks had 63 rushing yards and 219 passing yards for a total of 282 yards.

Brown had 16 carries for 244 yards and three touchdowns.  Schnieders had 17 carries for 144 yards and three touchdowns.  Frost had five carries for 44 yards and a touchdown.  Houska finished with three carries for 31 yards and a touchdown.

Casey Hansen was 1-2 passing for 26 yards.  Frost was 1-1 passing with 19 yards.  Schnieders had two catches for 45 yards.    Houska led the defense with nine tackles in the game.  Schnieders added eight tackles, and Frost finished with 6.5 tackles.

The Cardinals improve to 4-2 on the year.  St Mary will host Deubrook Area on Friday, October 2nd, in the final regular season game of the year.

Quarrier Football Back in Win Column

DellRapidsFootballLogoThe Dell Rapids Quarrier football team ended a 3-game losing streak with a 24-14 come-from-behind win over the Canton C-Hawks on Friday, October 2nd, in Dell Rapids.

Canton got on the board first in the first quarter on a two-yard touchdown run by Logan Ranschau to take an early 6-0 lead.  The C-Hawks added another touchdown in the second quarter on a one-yard touchdown run by Jacob Hult.  The two-point conversion was successful, and Canton held a 14-0 lead.

The Quarriers closed the gap before halftime by scoring twice.  The first touchdown came on a three-yard run by Adam Nagelhout to cut the Canton lead to 14-6.  Dell Rapids picked up another score before halftime on a 20-yard pass from Hunter Hansen to Sam White.  The two-point conversion failed, and the Quarriers trailed 14-12 at halftime.

Dell Rapids scored two more times in the third quarter to complete the come-from-behind win.  Hansen found the end zone on a two-yard run, and Jacob Faux had a 52-yard touchdown run as well.

Dell Rapids finished with 214 rushing yards and 130 passing yards for a total of 344 total yards.  The Quarriers picked up 10 first downs in the game.  They were 2-9 on third down and 0-1 on fourth down.

Hansen finished 6-15 passing for 130 yards, one touchdown and one interception.  White had all six receptions for Dell Rapids.  Hansen also led the team in rushing with 99 yards on eight carries and a touchdown.  Faux had six carries for 88 yards and a touchdown.  Tanner Heim led the defense with eight tackles.  Ryan Geraets finished with six tackles, and Anthony Miller had five tackles.

Dell Rapids improves to 2-4 on the year.  The Quarriers will travel to Milbank to face the Bulldogs on Friday, October 9th.  The game can be seen on Big Sioux Media.
