Dell Rapids Girls Golf at Dakota Valley

NewDRLogoThe Dell Rapids Quarrier girls golf team traveled to Two Rivers Golf Course on Tuesday, April 26th, for the Dakota Valley Invite.  The girls finished with a team score of 426.  Parkston finished first with a total of 332.  Vermillion was second with 342, and Madison placed third with a 371.

Kaitlyn Greenhoff finished the day with a round of 91.  Olivia Downs finished with a round of 102.  Stephanie Dennis had a round of 114, Rose Habeger a round of 119, and Mallory Haak finished with a 134.

The Quarriers will play in the Dells Invite at Rocky Run Golf Course on Tuesday, May 3rd.

Jerry O'BrienGerald “Jerry” B. O’Brien, 74, died on April 26, 2016. Funeral services will be held at 4 PM on Sunday, May 1, at George Boom Funeral Home in Sioux Falls. The family will be present for visitation from 2 – 4 PM on Sunday. On-line condolences may be left at George Boom Funeral Home.

Grateful for having shared his life are his 4 children: Brian (Stacey) O’Brien, Chandler, AZ, Dawn Anderson, Sykesville, MD, Troy O’Brien, Sioux Falls, SD and Jodi (Joseph) Tiede, Sioux Falls, SD : 13 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren; siblings: Robert (Peggy) O’Brien, Dell Rapids, SD, Lois Zimmer, Sioux Falls, SD, Donald (Ann) O’Brien, Warner Robins, GA; and Vernie (Ron) Feldhaus, Bloomington, MN; loving canine companion, Blue; host of other relatives and friends. He is preceded in death by his parents, Robert “Red” and Cecilia O’Brien.

4th Annual Relay for Life Run Held in Dell Rapids

2016RelayForLifeRun_2The 4th Annual Relay for Life Run was held at the the Dell Rapids City Park on Saturday, April 23rd.  Over 100 participants ran in the 5k, 10k, mile walk and kid’s relay throughout the morning.  The 10k race started at 9:00, and the 5k/mile walk started at 9:30.  The kid’s relay race started at 11:00.

All the proceeds raised during the event went to the Dell Rapids Relay for Life team.  Not only did this year’s event continue to raise money for cancer research, but also contained many personal accomplishments.  Will Beover, who is blind, participated in this year’s event after training for months at Revive Fitness.  He was led along the route by Lee Bollock.  Others in this year’s race completed their very first 5k as well.

Dell Rapids Baseball Gets Two More Wins

DellsBaseballLogoThe Dell Rapids baseball team picked up two wins in Clear Lake on Sunday, April 23rd.

Dell Rapids defeated Deuel-Castlewood-Hamlin (DCH) 7-0 behind a one-hit pitching performance by Brett Mogen.  Mogen pitched a complete game giving up one hit, a double in the seventh inning, along with one walk while striking out 13 batters.  Dell Rapids’ offense was led by Matt Gillogly with two doubles and a single.  Bo Teveldahl had a double with two RBI.  Josh Roemen had two doubles and two stolen bases.  Casey Hansen had a single and an RBI, and Nate McKee also had a single.

Dell Rapids then defeated Sioux Valley 5-1.  Dell Rapids scored two runs in the second inning, and then added single runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings on the way to the win.  Trevor Pulscher started the game pitching three innings of no-hit baseball while walking one and striking out three.  Roemen earned the win throwing four innings giving up a run on three hits and one walk while striking out three.  Gillogly had a double and single along with two stolen bases.  Teveldahl had two doubles, an RBI and a stolen base.  Hansen added a single and two RBI.

Dell Rapids improves to 8-2 on the year and will play in Madison on Friday, April 29th.

Cardinal Track Results from Tom Main Invite

DRSM LogoThe Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal boys and girls track teams were at the Tom Main Invitational at Chester on Saturday, April 23rd.  The girls finished with 22 points.  Mt. Vernon/Plankinton won the girls title with 150.5 points.  Canton was second with 140.5 points, and Chester Area was third with 89 points.  The Cardinal boys team finished with 34.5 points.  Mt. Vernon/Plankinton also won the boys team title with 92 points.  Baltic was second with 91 points, and Chester Area finished third with 82 points.

The Cardinals track teams will be at the Estelline Invite on Tuesday, April 26th.

Dell Rapids Girls 7th at Elk Point-Jefferson

NewDRLogoThe Dell Rapids Quarrier girls golf team placed seventh with a team score of 450 at the Elk Point-Jefferson Invite on Thursday, April 21st.  Vermillion won the team title with 361.  Canton was second with 384, and Dakota Valley was third with a 413.

Kaitlyn Greenhoff finished 11th individually for Dell Rapids with a round of 95.  Rose Habeger finished with a 106.  Mallory Haak had a 123.  Olivia Downs fired a 126, Grace Tisher a 128, and Stephanie Dennis had a 130.

The Quarriers will travel to Two Rivers Golf Course for the Dakota Valley Invite on Tuesday, April 26th.

SF Christian Snaps Dells Baseball Streak

DellsBaseballLogoIn a battle of top teams in Class B Baseball, Sioux Falls Christian defeated Dell Rapid 3-1 at Rickeman Field on Thursday, April 21st.

Sioux Falls Christian scored three times in the third inning, and their defense made key plays throughout the game for the win.  Sioux Falls Christian threw out three Dell Rapids baserunners, including one at home in the fifth inning to end a Dell Rapids rally.

Trey Randel took the loss for Dell Rapids pitching six innings while giving up three runs on five hits with three walks and three strikeouts.  Spencer Koelwyn earned the win throwing five innings giving up one run on three hits while walking three and striking out eight batters.

Eric Klein led the Dell Rapids offense with two singles.  Carter Gullickson and Ryan Geraets each had a single.  Casey Hansen had the lone RBI for Dell Rapids.

Ben Hammer does it again!

GPACFor the second week in a row, Ben Hammer has been named Great Plains Athletic Conference field athlete of the week, after strong performances in the 2016 Sioux City Relays in Sioux City, Iowa held April 11-17, 2016 . Ben qualified for the NAIA National Championships in the shot put after qualifying last week in the discus. He finished third in the shot put with a toss of 15.60 meters to qualify for nationals. In the discus, he took fourth place Saturday with a throw of 48.08 meters, besting all throwers from the NAIA level.

Judy (Shefte) Van Dam

Judy VanDamJudy Lynn Van Dam, 57, of Montrose, lost her short but courageous battle with pancreatic cancer on April 15, 2016 at Avera McKennan Hospital. Funeral mass was held on Friday, April 22, 2016 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Montrose. On-line condolences may be left at Kinzley Funeral Home.

Judy Shefte was born August 18, 1958 to Kenneth and Delores (Quam) Shefte in Dell Rapids, SD. She grew up on a farm near Dell Rapids and moved to town where she worked with her family at the Shefte Cafe in Junior High. She attended and graduated from Dell Rapids Public School.

On June 16, 1978, Judy married her best friend Floyde Van Dam in Dell Rapids. Floyde and Judy were blessed with two daughters and nearly 38 years of marriage. She was employed at Canistota Good Samaritan for the last 14 years as of April 8, 2016.

Judy is known for her caring heart, kindness and patience. She was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church and St. Patrick’s Altar Society, where she served as Vice President and currently President. She enjoyed gardening, canning, baking, sewing, and doing crafts. Judy also loved spending time with her 3 grandsons outside, in the garden, and baking.

She is survived by: her husband, Floyde of Montrose; two daughters, Jill (Dan) McMurtrey of Winner and Stacy Van Dam of Overland Park, KS; three grandchildren, Hayden, Clay, and Ethan McMurtrey; mother, Delores Shefte of Dell Rapids; brothers and sisters, Karen (Dean) Skatvold, Bonnie Ahlers, Gail (Mark) Gannon, Jean (Mike) Bauman, Stuart (Kim) Shefte, and Kevin (Laura) Shefte; mother-in-law, JoAnn Van Dam; and 20 nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her father, Kenneth Shefte, brother-in-law, Frank Ahlers, father-in-law, Nick Van Dam, and several aunts and uncles. In lieu of flowers, the family would prefer to make a contribution in memory of Judy to the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network to assist other families facing this devastating disease
