Robert Schoepp

robert-schoeppRobert K. Schoepp, age 87, Watertown, died peacefully in the Jenkins Living Center at Watertown, after a brief illness. A funeral Mass was celebrated on Wednesday, October 26, 2016. Burial with full military honors will follow at the St. Mary’s Cemetery in Watertown. On-line condolences may be left at the Furness Funeral Home website.

He was born Robert Keith Schoepp on September 16, 1929 in Henry, the son of Charles and Catherine “Nellie” (Redmond) Schoepp. Keith or Bob as he became known to many, attended school in Henry, graduating from Henry High School. He then attended and graduated from Northern State College in Aberdeen. Following high school, Bob served his country honorably from 1951 until 1955 in the United States Navy. After his discharge, he returned to the Henry/Watertown area.

On August 24, 1957 he was united in marriage to Dorothy Tessier at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Watertown. Following their marriage, he was employed by Phillips Petroleum Company in Omaha, NE, Lincoln, NE and then in Huron, SD. In 1974, he purchased an oil jobbership in Redfield, which he operated for several years. In 1988, he retired and the couple moved to Watertown.

Bob was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church at Watertown. Faith was a very important part of his daily life, spending many hours reading scripture, praying the rosary, volunteering for church activities and practicing a faith-filled life. In the communities he lived in over the years, he had been involved as a Scout leader, the South Dakota Oilmen’s Assn., a former member of the Knights of Columbus and the American Legion and was a member of the VFW. He also enjoyed traveling.

Some of the activities he enjoyed in his free time were woodworking, fishing and hunting, being a regular daily patron at the library and socializing with his coffee buddies. He always enjoyed a challenge, whether it was playing cards, Sudoku or cribbage with his children and grandchildren.  

Preceding him in death were his parents, brother Donald (Marguerite) and sister-in-law, Lois Schoepp.

Grateful for being a part of his life was his wife Dorothy of Watertown, children, Tim (Sharon) Schoepp of Dell Rapids, Scott (Melanie) Schoepp of Ellsworth, WI and Lori (Dennis) Klinkhammer of Albany, MN, 6 grandchildren, Brittany (Jon) Schoepp-Wong, Tanner and Trapper Schoepp, Nick and Courtney Klinkhammer, and Jared Schoepp. He also leaves brothers, Calvin “Bud” Schoepp of Henry and Herbert “Herb” Schoepp of Clark. Preceding him in death were his parents, brother Donald (Marguerite) and sister-in-law, Lois Schoepp.

Jonathan (Jon) Puttmann

jon-puttmannJonathan E Puttmann, 39, of Dell Rapids passed away unexpectedly Tuesday, November 15, 2016. Funeral services will begin at 10:30 AM Monday, November 21, 2016 at the Lutheran Church of Dell Rapids. Burial will be in Dell Rapids Cemetery. Visitation with the family present will be from 3:00 to 6:00 PM Sunday, November 20, 2016 at the church. On-line condolences may be left at the Minnehaha Funeral Home website.

Jon enjoyed life. His dedication to his children, family and friends was of utmost importance without question. He had a special compassion, patience and total commitment to his children. He gave all to them and was guiding them down God’s pathway.

Jon was born in Sioux City, Iowa on June 24, 1977 to Stephen and Dianna ( Bottjen) Puttmann. At the age of 2 ½ the family moved to a farm near Estelline, SD followed by a move at the age of 9 to the Dell Rapids area where he attended Dell Rapids Public School through high school graduation. He attended STI for a year studying horticulture.

Jon married Jaime Bunkers in December of 2006, making their home in Dell Rapids. They had two children, Addison and Harrison with the joy of having a step-daughter, Lani Bunkers.

Jon and his children attended church faithfully where he was active as a Sunday school teacher. He loved our Lord. He also enjoyed singing, being with friends and family and telling stories of his missteps, successes and life in general.

Along with his children, Lani, Addison and Harrison, surviving family members include his parents, Stephen and Dianna Puttmann of Dell Rapids; brother, Brandon (Kathleen) Puttmann of Colton, SD and their children, KaSandra, Kimberly and Braedon; grandmother, Marlyss Bottjen of Kingsley, IA and many aunts, uncles and cousins.

Jon was preceded in death by his grandparents, John Bottjen and Earl and Betty Puttmann.

Greg Spangler

greg-spanglerGreg Spangler, 64, husband of Joan Geraets Spangler, passed away Saturday, October 8, 2016 in Lexington, Kentucky after a long battle with Multiple Systems Atrophy. He was born in Logan, West Virginia. He retired from the U.S. Army after 20 years as an E-8 First Sergeant. Following his military retirement he worked as General Manager for several different home furnishings stores. He was a member of Cathedral of Christ the King in Lexington. His sons, Mike & Brian as well as his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, always had a special place in his heart. He loved all things outdoors including boating, hunting, fishing, golfing, and gardening. He was an avid reader.

Along with his wife, he is survived by his Dad, Gary Bell of Logan, West Virginia, sons and daughters-in-law, Michael and Jennifer Spangler of St. Albans, West Virginia, and Brian and Chessica Spangler of Lexington, Kentucky, grandchildren, Gloria Spangler, Caitlyn Spangler, Alexander Spangler, Zaccari Spangler, Lauren Spangler, Stella Spangler, great-grandchildren, Dan Spangler and Keira Justice. Although not related by blood, he thought of Casey Spangler as one of his own sons. He is also survived by his numerous aunts and uncles, many nieces and nephews, brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law. He was preceded in death by his Mother, Dora Jane Mays Bell, and brothers, Ralph Thomas Spangler II, and Richard “Rick” Allen Spangler.

Visitation with the family will be from 12:00 – 1:30 pm Saturday, November 12, 2016 at Tucker, Yocum, & Wilson Funeral Home, Georgetown, KY. Memorial services will follow at 1:30 pm at the funeral home. A Celebration of Life Ceremony will be at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Dell Rapids, South Dakota at 10:30 am on Saturday, November 19, 2016. Interment will follow at the church cemetery.

Dell Rapids Students Shine in Events

NewDRLogoSeveral Dell Rapids students have performed well in their events over the past few days.

Olivia Clark qualified for the state oral interp competition in poetry with her performance at the region contest on Tuesday, November 15th.  Averi Pankonen qualified as an alternate in the oratory category.  The duet team of Tim Jaycox and Ella Lueders also qualified as an alternate.  Morgan Nemmers, Abby Stauffenecker, and Sage Shellum also had strong performances at the region competition.

The Dell Rapids quiz bowl team competed at Sioux Falls Roosevelt on Monday, November 14th.  The team of Joey Abbott, Micah Gleason, Justin Dorn, and Stephanie Dennis placed 13th out of 46 teams in the competition.  The other two Dell Rapids teams each earned two wins in the six-round competition.

Recently Cheyenne Adams placed first in the District FFA Ag Broadcasting event.  She will now advance to the state event which will be held in Pierre on December 4th and 5th.  Trevor Pulscher also competed in the Ag Broadcasting event and placed sixth.

Gail Munk-Bares

gail-munk-baresGail Catherine Brown Munk Bares, 80, of Dell Rapids, died on Monday, November 14, 2016. Her funeral service will begin at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, November 18, 2016 in the Lutheran Church of Dell Rapids. Visitation will begin at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, November 17, 2016 at Kahler Funeral Home with the family present from 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. On-line condolences may be left at the Kahler Funeral Home website.

Gail lived a full life defined by her values of dedication to family, service to others, commitment to community, and resiliency in times of hardship. She lived life with a great sense of humor, a love for people and the belief that a kind and loving God was always by her side.

Gail Catherine Brown was born in Dell Rapids, South Dakota on June 10, 1936, the second child of Ellsworth Henry and Mary Catherine Brown. With the exception of a few years during World War II when her parents lived in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, she lived her entire life in or near Dell Rapids. She was a graduate of Dell Rapids High School, and active in all music activities.

On August 29, 1954 at the age of 18, Gail married Harold L. Munk. They made their home on a farm near Dell Rapids for over 41 years until Harold’s passing in 1995. Together, they raised five children as independent farmers, working the land, milking cows and caring for livestock. As a farmer’s wife, Gail proved a hard working partner as the young couple built their life and family together. Their early years on the farm, without running water and with five small children, were a test of fortitude and character. For Gail, those years became the foundation of humorous stories and life-long lessons. Those years were the manifestation of a resilient spirit that would define Gail’s life. The glass was half-full, even if it had to be hauled in from outside.

She used this optimistic outlook, sense of humor and fun in the many activities of her life from supporting her children’s activities in school to her many years of service to the church and community. In the 1970’s, Gail was a sponsor for a Hmong family from Laos after the Vietnam War when they relocated to Dell Rapids. She often said that she learned more than she taught from the Laotian mother who arrived with all her cooking utensils in one pot. In addition to being a farming partner with her husband Harold, she spent several years as a Mary Kay salesperson and used her musical talents as activities director for Terrace Manor in Dell Rapids. In later years, she spent summers assisting her brother Don at the Wilderness Leadership Camp outside of Jackson, WY.

She was a life-long member and active leader of the Lutheran Church of Dell Rapids. Her involvement included the choir, women’s circles where she organized, prepared and served more meals than can be recounted, as an accompanist for services, Sunday School programs and soloists, as a Sunday School teacher, and as a trainer for Stephen’s ministry providing comfort for those in need. She inspired many with her stories and talks, particularly to women’s groups of the area. She wrote fables and integrated them into lessons to help teach and share the ideas of stewardship, family, and God’s love.

In 1998, Gail united in marriage with Edward Bares and they made their home in Dell Rapids. The couple purchased a home in Brownsville, TX where they spent many winters, where Gail became the pianist for community gatherings. They also renovated a small home on Lake Herman where they spent time fishing and enjoying the lake views. Their lives were full of children (eleven between them) grand-children, great-grandchildren, and all the activities that genuine family engagement entails.

Gail loved her family without reservation and every child, spouse, grand-child and great-grandchild, sister and brother, niece and nephew benefited from that love. She rarely missed a baptism, wedding, birthday or anniversary even when her family doubled in size to include Ed’s children. She was a loving wife and mother, a care-giver and a protector, a counselor and a comedian, a friend and advisor, a pianist and a writer, a speaker and a teacher.

Gail Munk Bares is survived by her husband, Edward and her five children and their spouses, Steven Munk, Thomas and Patricia Munk, Judy and Mark England, Stuart and Beth Munk, Patty and Jeff Goldhammer, 12 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren; six step-children and their spouses, Michael and Julie Bares, Karen Bares, Richard and Mary Bares, Christine and Brian Verhey, Marie and Bill Miles, and Mark and Helen Bares, 15 step-grandchildren and 4 great step grandchildren; three brothers and spouses, Allen and Gloria Brown, Donald Brown, Richard and Sue Brown and one sister, Janet Brown. She is preceded in death by her first husband, Harold Munk and a child, Larry Jess Munk, sister in law Pat Brown and step great grandchild, Easton.

In lieu of flowers and in the spirit of Gail’s life, the family encourages donations to the charities of your choice. All other memorials can be made to the Gail Munk Bares Memorial Fund. Cards can be mailed to 24774 481st Ave, Dell Rapids, SD 57022.

Marvin Lorang

marvin-lorangMarvin Nicholas Lorang, age 79, of Lismore, MN, died Friday, November 11, 2016 at the Sanford USD Medical Center in Sioux Falls, SD. He was born December 2, 1936 in Lismore to John Jr. and Frances (Erdman) Lorang. Marv graduated from St. Anthony Catholic High School in 1955. He served his country in the United States Air Force from December 1956 to December 1962.

Marv married Ruth Ann Hendel on August 10, 1963 in Adrian, MN. The couple lived in Minneapolis where Marv attended Northwest Television & Electronics Institute (now Dunwoody), graduating in 1964. Later, the couple moved to Lismore. Marv worked at L & S Electric in Luverne from 1964 until 1967. He then owned and operated Marv’s TV & Appliance from 1967 to 1979 as well as drove school bus. Marv then began working at Farmers Union Coop Oil in Lismore in 1978, retiring in 1998. Upon retirement, he maintained roads for Lismore Township from 1998 to 2010.

Marv was an active member of St. Anthony Catholic Church in Lismore; Knights of Columbus where he served as Grand Knight; Lismore American Legion Post #636; Lismore Fire & Rescue; and was a firearm safety instructor for many years. Life in his final years was made richer by the faithful companionship of his dog Sally. The highlight of his year was the annual family deer hunting trip to Wyoming. For more than 50 years, Marv carried on this tradition started by his dad. He also enjoyed storytelling, reminiscing about past shenanigans, reading the newspaper, coffee in his favorite mug, pickup rides through the countryside with Sally, teaching kids to water ski, fishing, traveling and attending his grandchildren’s events. Marv earned the nickname “MacGyver” for his love of tinkering and ability to fix anything.

Marv is survived by his wife, Ruth Lorang, Lismore; five children, Thomas (Molly) Lorang, Morton, MN; Kevin (Yigliola) Lorang, Minneapolis, MN; Susan (Todd) Roerig, Sioux City, IA; Lynn (Shawn) Dearey, Durango, CO; and Jean (Ivan) Vargas, Dell Rapids, SD; twelve grandchildren, Kaitlyn & Keegan Lorang; John Pierre Lorang; Noah, Isaac & Grace Roerig; Caleb & Asha Dearey; and Owen, Lucy, Phoebe & Hazel Vargas; and in-laws, Irma Lorang, Joan Wolf, Lyle Healy, Jim & Phyllis Hendel, Judy Hendel and Leo Hendel.

He was preceded in death by his parents; granddaughter, Mary Cecelia Vargas on April 4, 2005; brother, Davey Lee Lorang; special aunt and uncle, Esther & Homer Loonan; and in-laws, Roman Wolf, Donna Healy, Robert Hendel and Joni Hendel.

Visitation will be from 4-8 pm Monday, with parish prayers at 7:30 pm, at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Lismore; and also one hour prior to the service at the church on Tuesday. Funeral Mass will be 10:30 am Tuesday at St. Anthony Catholic Church officiated by Fr. Andrew Beerman. Burial with full military honors provided by the Lismore American Legion will be in the St. Anthony Cemetery in Lismore. On-line condolences may be left at the Dingmann Funeral Home website.

Herbert Stelzer

stelzerHerbert “Herb” Stelzer, 88, of Sioux Falls, passed away on Friday, November 11, 2016 at Sanford Hospital in Sioux Falls. His funeral service will begin at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, November 16, 2016 at First Lutheran Church in Sioux Falls. Herbert Herman Stelzer was born at home to Martin and Emma (Scheidt) Stelzer on September 20, 1928 at Marion, South Dakota where he was raised and attended school until the family moved to a South Dakota farm near Jasper, Minnesota. He worked at various farm jobs until joining the U.S. Marines in 1950. On November 27, 1950, while home on leave, he was united in marriage with Beverly Gerry. The couple moved to California. Herb served in the Korean War until September 12, 1953, when he was discharged at the rank of Sergeant. His Purple Heart was awarded to him 36 years later.

Herb and his family moved back to South Dakota where he worked in Sioux Falls for a time; but he and Bev decided to return to California where he worked at various carpentry and implement dealership jobs. They moved their growing family to South Dakota in 1962 where, after a brief time in the auto service industry, he became employed at Du-Al Manufacturing Company. The couple moved to Dell Rapids with their family in 1964. During his years in Dell Rapids, every Saturday he helped his brother, Ervin (Sonny) on the family farm near Jasper, MN. Beverly passed away on June 27, 1978. Herb married Kathy Harms at Community Reformed Church in Sioux Falls on March 8, 1980. Residing in Sioux Falls, Herb retired from Du-Al Mftg. Co. on December 31, 1989, after working there a combined 26 years. Until 1995, he worked part time for Bormann Construction Company in his retirement.

Herb was a member of First Lutheran Church in Sioux Falls. He was also a member of the Dog Seven Association, a division of Marines who served in Korea. In addition to yearly reunions throughout the U.S. with fellow Marines, he and Kathy  hosted one of those reunions in the Black Hills of South Dakota in 2003. He was also a member of the VFW and the Military Order of the Purple Heart. He restored Allis Chalmers tractors, his 1953 Ford Truck, cars, built equipment and carpentry. His family was always a special priority. Herb especially enjoyed hunting and fishing, and was a member of Pheasants Forever and Duck Unlimited. Gardening saw hi growing giant pumpkins. His constant companion for many retirement years was his dog, Lucky. Some of his nick names were: Eagle Eye, Hub, Short Round and Haw, and he always had a joke or one liner.

He is survived by his wife, Kathy of Sioux Falls; his daughter, Vicki Kennedy of Dell Rapids; his three sons, Joel of Sioux Falls, Mark (Kim) of Jackson, WY and Dana of Dell Rapids; his two brothers, Ervin (Ida) of Sioux Falls and Arthur of Sioux Falls; his seven grandchildren, Brady Bunkers, Melissa (Clint) Schull, Brooke Bunkers, Jaime Puttmann and Jon Puttmann, Christina Hegge, Alice Stelzer and Joseph Stelzer; and his 11 great grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his first wife, Beverly and siblings, Elsie Larson, Robert Stelzer and Norma Anderson.

Lillian Wilson

wilson-lillian-obit-photoLillian A. Wilson, 87, of Dell Rapids passed away Thursday, November 10, 2016 at Dells Nursing and Rehab Center.

Funeral services will begin at 10:00 AM Wednesday, November 16, 2016 at East Nidaros Lutheran Church, rural Baltic, SD. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Visitation with the family present will be from 5:00 to 7:00 PM Tuesday, November 15, 2016 at Minnehaha Funeral Home in Dell Rapids.

Lillian was born April 17, 1929 to Dina Louise (Wold) and Thorsten Brende at the Dell Rapids Hospital. She grew up on the family farm near Renner until her family moved to Baltic where she graduated in 1947. After her dad passed away in 1951, she moved to Dell Rapids with her mom and worked in the Dells Café. She met her husband, Henry while hanging wallpaper for his mother and they married in 1954.

As a young mother, Lilian worked for Campbell Soup Company and over the years worked for Dakota Industries, Litton Industries and Hutchinson Technology where she was affectionately given the nick name “Silly Lilly”. When her co-workers would ask her age she would reply “Age is just a number and mine is unlisted.”

Celebrated for her rhubarb cake, she was a true homemaker. Lillian enjoyed baking, gardening, sewing pajamas for her boys and dresses for her daughter. She loved to draw and read movie star biographs. She especially liked Lucille Ball and Carol Burnett and watched their classic TV shows as well as “The Walton’s”, “Little House on the Prairie” and of course, Lawrence Welk on Saturday nights. Lillian also played the piano and having grown up in a home filled with music and laughter; she enjoyed polka music and loved to dance. She also enjoyed traveling and as a chaperone traveled to Washington DC, touring the Smithsonian and other sites with her daughter’s high school band.

Throughout her life Lillian proved time and again “that you are never too old to learn something new.” She taught herself to perm and style her own her, and of course did so well her mother and aunts requested she do theirs also. She learned how to ride a bicycle at 41, taught herself (that’s right) to drive a car at 45 and rode her first motorcycle at 80. She set a great example for the rest of us, “don’t stop learning and don’t stop moving!”

Grateful for having shared her life are her children, Terry Wilson, Sioux Falls, SD, Tom Wilson, Dell Rapids, SD, Charles Wilson, Volga, SD and Cindy Wilson, Houston, TX; brother, Orlene Brende, Sioux Falls, SD and many other relatives and friends.

Lillian was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Henry in 2001; brother, Joe and sister, Marilyn.

Dell Rapids Students Honor Veterans

Students from Dell Rapids and Dell Rapids St Mary honored veterans all morning long on Veteran’s Day, Friday, November 11th.  Dell Rapids High School held a Veteran’s Day Breakfast for all veterans and their families at 7:30 a.m.  The breakfast was followed by a program in the high school gym.

The Dell Rapids Elementary School held a program starting at 9:30 a.m.  Students in grades Kindergarten through fourth grade performed songs and readings for the veterans and audience.

The programs concluded with a Veteran’s Day Assembly held at Dell Rapids St Mary High School at 10:30 a.m.
