Roland Rust

Roland D. Rust, 68, of Estelline, SD, passed away Thursday, May 11, 2017, at Prairie Lakes Hospital, in Watertown, SD. Funeral Services were held on Tuesday, May 16, 2017 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Estelline. On-line condolences may be left at the Geise Funeral Chapel website.

Roland Dennis Rust was born December 5, 1948, in Estelline, SD, the son of George and Luella Mae (Lamberg) Rust. He graduated from Estelline High School in 1967. He joined the National Guard after high school. After he completed Basic Training, he worked for Minneapolis-Moline. On January 3, 1970, he was united in marriage to the love of his life, Cindy Papka. Together they had two children, Shelly and Joe Rust. He spent a summer in Presho, SD before returning to the family farm. He farmed and raised cattle in Estelline until 2012. He then pursued his lifelong dream of being a cattle rancher. With the help of Kent Morris, Gary Linneman and Walt Church, Roland was able to fulfill his dream and still be able to be at home with his friends and family.

He was past president of the Hamlin County Sportsman Club, President of the Dempster Co-op Grain, member of the American Legion, Jaycees and Estelline Rodeo Club. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and served on the church board. Roland’s hard work, dedication and ability to befriend anyone he came across, leaves us with many memories to cherish and honor.

Grateful for having shared his life is his wife of 47 wonderful years, Cindy Rust, of Estelline, SD; daughter, Shelly (Lance) Bird and their daughter, Kami, of Worthington, MN; son, Joe (Trista) Rust and their daughters, Kodi, Kenzie, Kya and Karissa, of Castlewood, SD; twin brother, Rodney (Kandi) Rust, of Dell Rapids, SD; his sisters-in law, Dot Colberg, Jan (Dale) Sonnenburg and Judy Keimig; brother-in-law, Denny (Connie) Papka and his many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, JoAnn Stonehouse; parents-in-law, Stanley and Mamie Papka, brothers-in-law, Bud Papka, Dean Mohan, Wally Colberg and sisters-in-law, Mary Papka and Karen Mohan.

Alice Petersen

Alice J. Petersen, 82, of Dell Rapids passed away on Friday, May 19, 2017 at Dow Rummel Village in Sioux Falls. Her funeral service will begin at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, May 24, 2017 in the Lutheran Church of Dell Rapids. Visitation will begin at noon on Tuesday, May 23, 2017 at Kahler Funeral Home with the family present from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. On-line condolences may be left at the Kahler Funeral Home website.

Alice Buss, an avid horseback rider, grew up on the family dairy farm near Magnolia, MN. She attended Magnolia High School and was an active participant in 4H, choir and was crowned Miss Rock County. After graduation, she began work at a law firm in Luverne as a Paralegal and there, she met her husband of 48 years, Richard C. Petersen.

They had three children, Elizabeth (Morgan) Mendelson of Sioux Falls, SD; Bryce (Echo) Petersen of Plankinton, SD and Tracy (Marc) Edmondson of Lake Oswego, OR. Dick and Alice moved their young family to Dell Rapids, SD in 1961. Together, they were long-time business owners of Petersen Pharmacy and Gifts. Alice was very active in the Dell Rapids community. She was a core member of the group that launched the community theater, OOPS; member of the PEO sisterhood; benefactor of the Carnegie Library restoration project; founding member of the Dell Rapids golf course; and was an active volunteer in the elementary school reading program and high school band, choir, and theatre productions. She was a prominent member of the Dell Rapids Lutheran Church and sang soprano in the church choir. Alice considered herself fortunate to winter in Mesa, AZ for the last 10 years and enjoyed her time in the warm sun with friends, bible study and water aerobics.

Alice was naturally gifted in vocal music. At a young age, she sang in competitions, on Minnesota Public Radio, in various choirs, on stage, and always to her grandchildren. Her love and interest carried beyond music to include oil palette knife painting. Alice was a voracious reader and conversant on a wide range of topics from politics to the financial markets. She had a unique ability to impart simple wisdom and compassion to young and old. She loved animals, and one of her greatest joys was raising Siamese cats and was known to her family and friends as the “crazy cat lady”. On her 75th birthday, her granddaughters surprised her with a trip to Las Vegas and presented her with a new feline companion Joey, who was at her bedside until last breath.

Alice fought a courageous battle against multiple cancers over the last several years. With grit, determination and strong will, she was able to enjoy many special family moments including the marriages of three grandchildren: Kelly (Petersen) and Chad Nielson, Tyndall, SD; Courtney (Mendelson) and Graham Van Horn, Sioux Falls, SD, Trenton Mendelson and Jesse Zhang, Wuxi, China and celebrated the college graduations of Kelsey and Sara Edmondson, Lake Oswego, OR. Most recently she welcomed her first great grandchild Rhett Van Horn.

Alice was preceded in death by her husband, Richard, parents, Ruth (DeGroot) and Herman Buss, and siblings, Marion Binford and Donald Buss.

Memorials may be directed to the Lutheran Church of Dell Rapids or the Dell Rapids Carnegie Library.

Mudcats Win Cornbelt Opener

The Dell Rapids Mudcats opened up the Cornbelt League season with a 3-2 win over Flandreau on Thursday, May 18th, at Rickeman Field in Dell Rapids.

Flandreau scored the first two runs of the game. The first run came in the first inning on a throwing error. Flandreau added to their lead at 2-0 after an RBI single in the top of the fourth inning. The Mudcats got on the board after a Chad Hunt RBI sacrifice fly. Aaron Johnson drove home the next two runs on a single to give Dell Rapids the lead.

Colin Karst started the game for the Mudcats, giving up two runs, but just one of them earned. Nate Alfson pitched four innings in relief allowing just one hit while striking out seven. Jimmy Bauer had two hits, including a double.

The Mudcats are scheduled to host the Sioux Falls Squirrels, but the Dell Rapids High School baseball team will be hosting the Region 2B “Super Regional” tournament games on Tuesday. The Mudcats will host Renner on Thursday, May 25th. The next Cornbelt League game for Dell Rapids is on Thursday, June 1st, in Humboldt.

Cardinal Track Teams Finish 5th and 6th at Region 4B

The Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal track teams competed in the Region 4B track meet on Thursday, May 18th, at Chester. The Cardinal girls team finished 5th with 89 points. Chester Area won the girls title with 126 points, Hanson was 2nd with 108.33 points, and Howard placed 3rd with 95.33 points. The Cardinal boys team finished 6th with 58 points. Chester Area also won the boys title with 130 points. Colman-Egan was 2nd with 114 points, and Canistota placed 3rd with 73 points.

The Cardinals had five Region 4B champions. The 4x800m Relay team (Cassy Geraets, Tana Harrington, Christina Vogel, Ella Heinitz) took first place. Heinitz also won the 400m Dash, Harrington won the 800m Run, Vogel won the 1600m Run, and Kennedi Mullaney won the 100m Hurdles.

The State B Track meet will be held at Howard Wood Field in Sioux Falls on both Friday, May 26th, and Saturday, May 27th.

Boys 2nd, Girls 3rd for Quarrier Track at Region 3A

The Dell Rapids Quarrier boys track team placed 2nd with a total 0f 151 points at the Region 3A track meet in Madison on Thursday, May 18th. Sioux Falls Christian won the title with 213 points. Madison placed 3rd with 127 points. The Quarrier girls finished 3rd with 131 points. Madison won the girls title with 187 points, and Sioux Falls Christian was 2nd with 143 points.

The Quarriers had four region champs on the day. Aspen Hansen won the 300m Hurdles, Kali Graham won the High Jump, Dawson Kerzman won the Shot Put, and Ethan Brobjorg won the Discus.

The State A Track meet will be held on Friday, May 26th, in Tea, and then Saturday, May 27th, in Sioux Falls.

Quarrier Girls Golf Places Four in Last Two Tournaments

The Dell Rapids Quarrier girls golf team played in the Madison Invite on Thursday, May 11th, and then in the Vermillion Invite on Monday, May 15th. The Quarriers had two top 15 finishers in each of the two tournaments.

Dell Rapids finished fifth as a team with a score of 410 at the Madison Invite. Canton won the team title with a team score of 367. Lennox was second with 380, and Madison was third with 389. Kaitlyn Greenhoff finished second after a two-hole playoff. Greenhoff finished with a round of 84. Sam Schmidt tied for 11th with a round of 96. Olivia Downs finished with a round of 100, and Mallory Haak finished with a 130.

The Quarriers finished with a team score of 418 at the Vermillion Invite. Vermillion and Lennox both had the low team scores of 357. Tea Area finished with a team score of 364. The Quarriers again had two top 15 finishers. Downs had the low score for Dell Rapids and finished 13th with a round of 92. Greenhoff also had a round of 92 and finished 15th. Rose Habeger finished with a round of 112. Grace Tisher had a 122, and Sydney Emery had a round of 133.

Dell Rapids will be at the Dak XII Conference Tournament in Hartford at Central Valley Golf Course on Monday, May 22nd.

Dells Baseball Advances in Region Play

Dell Rapids took the next step towards a third straight state tournament appearance with an 11-1 opening round win in the regions against Chester/Colman-Egan/Flandreau on Monday, May 15th, in Dell Rapids.

Dells scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning. Josh Roemen scored on an fielder’s choice RBI by Nate McKee. Carter Gullickson scored on an error. Seth Anderson scored on a double, and Dell Rapids led 3-0 early. Dell Rapids scored two more in the bottom of the third on RBI singles by Austin Ellingson and Keegan Miller. C/CE/F scored their lone run on the top of the fifth inning, but Dell Rapids answered with six in the bottom of the inning to end the game on the 10-run rule. Anderson scored on an error, Ellingson scored on a wild pitch, Eddie Price had an RBI single, Logan Ruesink scored on an error, and Gullickson had an RBI double and then scored later in the inning on an error to end the game.

Roemen, Gullickson, Ellingson, and Miller all had two hits each. Price, McKee, and Anderson also had hits. Ellingson had two RBIs in the game, while Price, McKee, Gullickson, and Miller all had one RBI. Roemen pitched all five innings giving up one earned run on two hits while walking one and striking out seven.

Dell Rapids advances to the Super Regional which will be held at Rickemen Field in Dell Rapids on Tuesday, May 23rd. Dell Rapids will play either Volga or Madison at 3:30 p.m. Deuel Area will play Oldham-Ramona-Rutland at 5:30 p.m. The winners of the two games will face one another at 7:30. The winner of the Super Regional will advance to the State B Final Four.

Dell Rapids Musical Draws Big Numbers

The Dell Rapids Drama department’s musical performance of ‘The Lion King’ drew big numbers over five days. The musical, directed by Sharon Mitchell and Robert Michalscheck, played to over 1,500 people.

The students performed for the elementary school on Thursday, May 11th. They followed that with a performance for the middle and high school on Friday, May 12th, in the afternoon. The first public showing was the evening of May 12th. They held another show on Saturday, May 13th, and a final show in the afternoon on Sunday, May 14th.

There were 70 students that were in the play. Not only was there a large number of students that performed, there were many more along with family and community members that helped in building sets and making 150 handmade costumes.

All of the comments about the performance on social media and around town have been praising the students about how well the play was done.

Ryan Frost

We lost our beloved Ryan Frost on Saturday, May 13^th, 2017 in his hometown of Dell Rapids, South Dakota.

Ryan was born to Bill and Kay Frost on February 1^st, 1971 in Minot, North Dakota. He joined Loran, Mary and Becky as the youngest of four. He attended Watertown High School where he met and later married the love of his life, Mindy Jo Unger. Ryan and Mindy both graduated from the University of North Dakota where he received his B.S. in Nursing.

After college, Ryan and Mindy relocated to Texas for a short period of time where they welcomed Jacob Ryan and Garret William into their lives. After moving back to Dell Rapids, their youngest, Cooper Joseph was born. All three boys attended St. Mary Catholic School in Dell Rapids where Ryan loved watching his boys grow both on and off the field.

Ryan loved nothing more than spending the day fishing with his sons, enjoyed weekends at Lake Pelican with the whole family and cooking for a crowd while claiming himself as “Frosty Lagassi”. He knew how to keep a room entertained for hours and was known by all as a one of a kind person that would make you laugh until you cried. The life and love he had for his entire family and friends shined through him and his greatest accomplishments were the three boys and the family he and Mindy built together.

Grateful for having shared his life are his wife, Mindy Frost, Dell Rapids; children, Jacob, Garret and Cooper Frost, Dell Rapids; parents, William and Kay Frost, Watertown; brother, Loran (April) Frost, Dell Rapids; sisters, Mary Frost, Austin, TX and Tina Frost, Georgetown, TX; father and mother-in-law, Randy (Joyce) Unger, Sioux Falls; brothers-in-law, Carl (Rebecca) Unger, Shakopee, MN and Eric (Candace) Unger, Mora, MN; nieces, Sarah, Emma, Katie, Dixie, Daisy, Shelby, Calley, Carina, Joanna and Mercy; great-niece, Carly and great-nephew, Oliver as well as many other relatives and friends.

Preceding Ryan in death were his grandparents, William and Cecilia Frost and Fred and Dorothy Andrews and sister, Becky Frost.

Memorials may be made to St. Mary Catholic Schools for the “Frost Scholarship Fund”.

Ryan W. Frost, 46, of Dell Rapids passed away Saturday, May 13, 2017.

Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 11:00 AM Wednesday, May 17, 2017 at St. Mary Catholic Church in Dell Rapids. Visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00 PM with a Wake Service at 7:00 PM Tuesday, May 16, 2017 at the church. On-line condolences may be left at the Minnehaha Funeral Home website.

Joe Van Dam

Joseph Anthony Van Dam, 80, of Dell Rapids passed away Thursday, May 11, 2017.A Celebration of life will be Monday, May 15, 2017 at Minnehaha Funeral Home in Dell Rapids with the family present from 6:00 to 8:00 PM. On-line condolences may be left at the Minnehaha Funeral Home website.

Joe was born October 2, 1936 to parents Nick and Catherine (Herwath) Van Dam. He had two sisters, Ethel and Helena and a brother, Nick Jr.

Joe loved the outdoors and sharing it with his friends and family. Camping, fishing and hunting were among his favorites. His favorite time of year to celebrate was the Fourth of July, making it a huge celebration for family and friends. He was a member of the Air Force and a long-time employee of John Morrell and Company in Sioux Falls.

Grateful for having shared his life are his children, Lori (Brian) Amundson of Madison, Lisa (Herbert) Christion of Sioux Falls, Lynda (Bill) Rave of Brookings, Jeffrey (Brenda) Van Dam of Sioux Falls and John Van Dam of Glenrock, WY. He had 16 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren as well as many other relatives and friends.
