Dells Baseball Wins State Title

DRvsVerm_5-29-17_StateChampDell Rapids Baseball claimed the 2017 South Dakota High School Baseball Association State B championship on Monday, May 29th after beating West Central and Vermillion in the four team tournament at Sioux Falls Stadium.

Dell Rapids opened up the tournament with an 11-5 win over West Central.  Dell Rapids put the pressure on early and often in the opening game.  After loading the bases in the bottom of the first inning, Seth Andersen earned an RBI after being hit by a pitch to give Dell Rapids a 1-0 lead after the first inning.  Eddie Price hit a one-out double and later scored on a passed ball to push the lead to 2-0.  Price and Josh Roemen each drove in a run on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the third inning to give Dell Rapids a 4-0 lead.  West Central pushed a run across in the top of the fourth and had the bases loaded with one out, but Roemen got Devlin Rue to hit into an inning-ending double play to get out of a jam.  Keegan Miller hit a sacrifice fly to drive home Matt Gillogly, and Dell Rapids led 5-1 after four innings of play.  Gillogly then hit an RBI single in the fifth to increase the lead.  After West Central scored another run in the top of the sixth inning, Dell Rapids scored five times in the bottom of the inning.  Price, Roemen, Carter Gullickson, and Nate McKee all had RBI hits in the inning.  West Central did score three runs in the top of the seventh, but Price retired three of the four batters he faced to close out the win for Dell Rapids.

Roemen finished the first game 3-4 with a double and two RBIs.  McKee had two hits, including a double, and an RBI.  Gillogly, Elijah Story, and Price also finished the game with two hits.  Price also had two RBIs.  Gullickson, Gillogly, Andersen, and Miller all had RBIs.  Roemen picked up the win on the mound pitching six innings giving up five runs, four earned, on four hits while walking four and striking out three.  Price pitched one inning of relief walking one batter and striking out one.

Dell Rapids then earned a 7-0 win the championship game over Vermillion.  Vermillion defeated PG/DC/WL/C 11-1 to advance to title game.  Andersen delivered the first big hit of the game for Dell Rapids in the bottom of the first.  After Dell Rapids loaded the bases, Andersen hit a bases-clearing double to left field to give Dell Rapids a 3-0 lead after the first inning.  Both pitchers were in control over the next three innings as the score remained 3-0 in favor of Dell Rapids after four complete innings.  Andersen again drove in another run in the bottom of the fifth on a hard-hit ground ball on a drawn-in infield scoring Gullickson to give Dell Rapids a 4-0 lead.  Austin Ellingson followed that hit with a two-run double to extend the lead to 6-0.  The final run for Dell Rapids came in the bottom of the sixth inning on back-to-back triples by McKee and Gillogly.

Gullickson was 3-4 in the second game with a double and two runs scored.  Andersen was 2-4 with a double and four RBIs.  McKee, Gillogly, and Ellingson all collected hits.  Ellingson had two RBIs, and Gillogly had an RBI.  Trevor Pulscher pitched the complete game shutout allowing just five hits over the seven innings while walking no batters and striking out five batters.

Al Weisbecker

Al WeisbeckerAl Weisbecker, a former Dell Rapids resident, age 86, of Madison, died May 22, 2017, at his residence.  On-line condolences may be left at the Ellsworth Funeral Home.

Albert Frank Weisbecker was born March 29, 1931, at Aberdeen, to Albert and Hazel (Gillis) Weisbecker. He graduated from Aberdeen Central High where he was all-state in football before attending Northern State University. During college he joined the SD Army National Guard and served during the Korean War in Alaska. He returned to Northern State where he graduated and was all-conference in football. Al later received his master’s degree from South Dakota State University. Following college, he taught and coached all sports at Bristol High School before taking the same positions at Ruthton, MN and Watertown.

Al married MaryJane Houske on December 20, 1959 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Madison then returned to Watertown and taught and coached for two years before moving to Flandreau where he was the football coach. The couple then moved to Madison where he coached, taught and was the athletic director. He led the Madison football team to its only ESD conference championship. Al then began teaching and was the defensive coordinator at DSU and led the team to victory at the Boot Hill Bowl. For 17 years he was defensive coach at Dakota State, where his defensive unit topped the nation in defense in 1977 allowing only 4.3 points per game.

In 1985, the family moved to Spearfish where Al was the head football coach at Black Hill State University and was voted Coach of the Year. While at BHS he began participating in the SD Senior Games when he turned 55. Al and his family then moved to Dell Rapids and he became the Executive Director of the SD Senior Games. The family returned to Madison and he retired a few years ago. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Dell Rapids American Legion, and was a member of NSU, DSU, and SD Senior Games Hall of Fame.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Casper Frank Weisbecker; two sisters, Beverly Ochs and Janice Skorheim; one grandson, Kalvin Berry “KB” Hernandez; and one brother-in-law, Harold Houske.

Survivors include his wife MaryJane; two children, Lynn Hernandez of Madison, William Weisbecker of Egan; two grandchildren, Benjamin (Allison) Hernandez, Julian (Amanda) Hernandez; five great-grandchildren, Benjamin, Julian, Ruby, Jadeyn, James; one sister-in-law Margaret Weisbecker of Mankato, MN; and many nieces and nephews.

In Lieu of Flowers, memorials may be directed to the DSU Foundation or an organization of choice. The family has chosen body donation to the USD School of Medicine.

 

Duane “Duke” Brende

Duke BrendeDuane “Duke” Brende passed away unexpectedly of an apparent embolism on Saturday, May 27, 2017. His Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, May 31, 2017 in St. Mary Catholic Church, Dell Rapids. Interment will be in St. Mary Cemetery, Dell Rapids. Visitation will begin at noon on Tuesday, May 30, 2017 at Kahler Funeral Home. The family will be present from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. with the Christian Wake service at 7:00 p.m.  On-line condolences may be left at the Kahler Funeral Home website.

Duane “Duke” Clifford Brende was born on June 18, 1951 in Sioux Falls, SD to Clifford and Leona (Nelson) Brende. He grew up and attended school in Baltic, graduating from Baltic High School in 1969. He attended and graduated from Dakota State University in Madison. After college, he met the love of his life Patti Shelquist. They were married on June 4, 1977 in St. Mary Catholic Church in Dell Rapids. The couple made their home in Dell Rapids. Duke was employed at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls and was looking forward to his upcoming retirement.

Duke was the finest example of a true family man. He was an extremely caring and dedicated husband, father, and grandfather. He loved Patti with all of his heart and took pride in the life and family they built together. He played a monumental role in his children’s and grandchildren’s lives. Duke was well known for his true passion for sports. He attended countless hours of ball games throughout the years. He enjoyed watching Ross and Erin’s sporting events growing up and played an active role as a coach and mentor. Duke rooted passionately for the Yankees, Colts, and Duke Blue Devils. Nobody despised the Red Sox or Tom Brady more than he did. He was also a committed fan to all the area teams and was looking forward to watching his grandchildren and their various activities. He and Patti were past presidents of the DRHS Booster Club and were named boosters of the year for 1995-1996. Duke will undoubtedly be missed by many.

He was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church. He was a past Legion baseball coach and took pride in coaching the team that made it to state in 1998.

Duke is preceded in death by his parents and his in-laws, Walter and Bernice Shelquist.

He is survived by his wife, Patti of Dell Rapids, his son, Ross (Tiffany) Brende of Dell Rapids and their sons, Jace, Brooks, and Jax; his daughter, Erin (Eric) Carlson of St. Michael, MN and their children, Anthony, Avery and Maclin; his brother, Don (Pat) Brende of Dell Rapids; his sister-in-law, Mary Jo Shelquist of Dell Rapids; his nephews, Scot Brende and Steve Brende; his niece, Sherri Brende and his extended family and many friends.

2017 State Track Meet Results for DR and DRSM

TrackLogoBoth the Dell Rapids Quarrier and Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal track teams had athletes that participated in the 2017 State A and State B Track Meet in Sioux Falls on Friday, May 26th, and Saturday, May 27th.

The two schools combined to have 14 place winners at the state meet.  Mason Schmidt took home the individual title for the High Jump with a leap of 6’7″.

The Dell Rapids boys finished tied for 7th overall with 32 points.  Sioux Falls Christian won the Class A Boys title.  Madison and St Thomas More tied for 1st in the Class A Girls.  Chester Area won the Class B Boys title, and Duebrook Area won the Class B Girls title.

Two Qualify for State for Quarrier Girls Golf

NewDRLogoTwo Dell Rapids Quarrier girls golfers qualified for the state tournament after their rounds at the Region 1A tournament in Volga on Thursday, May 25th.  Dell Rapids finished 6th as a team with a score of 433.  Madison won the tournament with a team score of 377.  Sisseton was 2nd with team total of 381, and McCook Central/Montrose placed 3rd with a team score of 423.  The top three teams all qualified for state.

Kaitlyn Greenhoff qualified for state individually after placed 3rd with a round of 82.  Olivia Downs also qualified for state by placing 12th with a round of 102.  Paige Sterud finished with a 119.  Sami Schmidt had a round of 120, and Mallory Haak ended the day with a 121.

Greenhoff and Downs will play in the State A golf tournament at Central Valley Golf Club in Hartford on June 5th and 6th.

Dells Baseball Advances to State Tournament for 3rd Straight Year

DRSuperRegional2017_1Dell Rapids High School Baseball is headed back to the State B Tournament for the third straight year after winning the Super Regional held at Rickeman Field on Tuesday, May 23rd.

Dell Rapids won their first game against Sioux Valley 10-0 in six innings.  Josh Roemen got the scoring started right away in the first inning after scoring on a wild pitch.  Nate McKee scored moments later on passed ball.  Seth Anderson had an RBI single to drive home Matt Gillogly, and Austin Ellingson had an RBI single to score Anderson.  Dell Rapids lead 4-0 after the first inning.  Another run came across in the bottom of the second on a McKee RBI single.  Gillogly had an RBI double and then scored on an error in the fourth inning to push the lead to 7-0.  Dell Rapids would score three more in the sixth to end the game on the 10-run rule. Roemen went 3-3 in the game with three runs scored.  Gilligoly had two hits and two RBIs.  Ellingson also had two hits and two RBIs.  Elijah Story, Jay Holm, McKee, and Anderson all had hits.  Holm and Anderson also both had two RBIs each.  Roemen pitched all six innings giving up just one hit while walking two and striking out five.

After Deuel/Hamlin/Castlewood defeated Oldham-Ramona-Rutland, Dell Rapids then placed D/H/C for a birth to the state tournament on the line.  Dell Rapids went on to beat D/H/C 10-1 to earn their third straight trip to the State B Tournament.

D/H/C tied the game in the top of the second at 1-1 after a passed ball.  But Dell Rapids scored eight times in the bottom of the inning.  Eddie Price hit an RBI single and scored on an error, Gullickson scored on a wild pitch, Anderson had a two-run single, Keegan Miller had an RBI single, and Story had an RBI single to give Dell Rapids a 9-1 lead after the second inning.  The final run of the game came in the bottom of the third on an RBI single by McKee.

Gullickson was 3-4 with an RBI.  Miller finished 2-3 from the plate with an RBI.  Story, Roemen, Price, McKee, and Anderson also all had hits.  Story and Anderson had two RBIs each.  Trevor Pulscher pitched six innings giving up one run, which was unearned, on four hits with one walk and six strikeouts.  Price pitched the final inning walking three and striking out three batters.

Dell Rapids will play West Central in the opening round of the State B Tournament.  All the games are on Monday, May 29th, in Sioux Falls

Dell Rapids Girls Golf 3rd at Pre-Regions, Greenhoff Wins

NewDRLogoIn a weather-shortened pre-region tournament in Volga, the Dell Rapids Quarrier girls golf team finished 3rd with a team score of 202.  Sisseton placed 1st with 199, and McCook Central/Montrose finished 2nd with 200.  The tournament was shorted to only nine holes.

Kaitlyn Greenhoff won the tournament individually in a play0ff.  Greenhoff finished with a round of 42.  Sami Schmidt finished 10th with a round of 50.  Olivia Downs placed 14th with a round of 53.  Stephanie Dennis finished with around of 57, and Mallory Haak had a 64.

The Quarriers will be back in Volga on Thursday, May 25th, for the Region 1A Tournament.

Quarrier Girls Golf Finishes 6th at Dak XII Tourney

NewDRLogoThe Dell Rapids Quarrier girls golf team placed 6th at the Dak XII Conference golf tournament at Central Valley Golf Course in Hartford on Monday, May 22nd.  Dell Rapids finished with a team score of 407.  Canton won the conference title with 365.  Sioux Falls Christian and Vermillion both finished at 366.  Lennox had a 369 team score, and West Central finished with 391.

Kaitlyn Greenhoff placed 4th individually a round of 85 on the day.  Olivia Downs finished with a round of 100.  Rose Habeger and Paige Sterud both ended with a 111.  Sami Schmidt had a 117, and Mallory Haak finished with a 123.

The Quarriers will play in the Pre-Region Tournament in Volga on Tuesday, May 23rd.

New Temporary Truck Route Approved

TruckRouteChangesThe Dell Rapids City Council approved a new truck route agreement with the South Dakota Department of Transportation at their last regular meeting on Monday, May 15th.  The new truck route will be put in place temporarily during the construction happening at Exit 98 (Dell Rapids interchange) of Interstate 29.

The temporary truck route will run on Garfield Ave from 4th St to Quartzite St.  Trucks will then be able to gain access to Hwy 115 from Quartzite St.

As part of the agreement, dust control will also be maintained on Garfield Ave from Centennial Place to Quartzite St.  Garfield Ave will be replaced to its current condition after the the truck use is completed.

The motion was made by Alderman Mike Geraets to accept the agreement and seconded by Alderman Gary Haak.  The motion passed.

Council Considers Changes to City Bus Rides

DellRapidsTowerThe Dell Rapids City Council heard a request to have the city bus operated on Fridays during their last regular meeting on Monday, May 15th.  Currently the city bus does not run on Fridays.

“The transit wanted the council to know they have been asked about it on several occasions, and they would like to approach the city about looking at Friday,” said City Administrator Justin Weiland.

Weiland added that he’d like to have conversations to make sure costs could be covered before the council made a decision on adding another day of service.  The council decided to have the Policy and Procedures Committee look at adding an extra day of operation as well as providing a different option of a bus pass instead of a punch card.

The council also held a discussion on how to increase ridership and possibly incorporate transportation for kids to the pool in some way that’s linked with purchases of pool passes.

“I would sure like to see ridership increase.  I think it’s a service that’s good for the community.  It’s good for safety.  You’ve got the children on the bus instead of crossing streets,” said Alderman Mike Geraets.

After some discussion about how to get children to the pool on a pilot program and after a withdrawn motion by Alderman James Borchert, Alderman Mark Crisp made a motion that if a pool pass is purchased, children can ride the city bus for free that live within city limits to and from swimming lessons as a pilot program.  The motion was seconded by Geraets.  The motion passed.
