Eric M. Petty, 35, of Dell Rapids, formerly of Omaha, NE passed away on Tuesday, October 24, 2017 from injuries received in an automobile accident. His Memorial Service will begin at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, October 27, 2017 at Kahler Funeral Home.
Eric is survived by his mother and step-father, Donna and Conrad Bartolome of Omaha, NE; his sister, Sarah (Justin) Hinrichs; his father, Robert David Petty of Council Bluffs, IA and his extended family of uncles, aunts and cousins.
The Dell Rapids Quarrier football team had their season come to an end on Thursday, October 26th. The St Thomas More Cavaliers upset the Quarriers in the opening round of the 11A football playoffs 21-20.
With the strong winds at their backs, the Cavaliers scored first with 3:33 to go in the first quarter on a 45-yard pass from Ryder Kirsch to Thomas Rafferty. Joe Poeppel kicked the extra point for a 7-0 St Thomas More lead. The Cavaliers then scored early in the second quarter. With 10:34 to play in the half, Kirsch connected with Rafferty again for a 24-yard touchdown. Poeppel made the extra point into the wind to give St Thomas More a 14-0 lead.
Matt Gillogly scored the first touchdown for Dell Rapids with 2:16 to play in the first half. Gillogly scored on a two-yard run. Hunter Gerry made the extra point to cut the lead in half at 14-7. St Thomas More drove the ball deep into Quarrier territory, but Eddie Price intercepted a pass at the goal line with :12.8 on the clock to keep the score 14-7 heading into halftime.
Neither team was able to put a score on the board in the third quarter, but Dell Rapids tied the game with 10:28 left in the fourth quarter after a seven-yard run by Gillogly and the extra point by Gerry. St Thomas More pushed the ball to midfield but was forced into a fourth and short. The Cavaliers went for it, and the Dell Rapids defense tackled Kirsch for a loss to get the ball back on a turnover on downs with 8:07 to play in the game.
Dell Rapids methodically marched the 50 yards in just under five minutes of clock time. Carson Rentz scored the go-ahead touchdown with 3:13 to go in the game on a one-yard quarterback sneak. Unfortunately for Dell Rapids, Gerry’s extra point attempt into the wind hit the right upright of the goalpost and was no good. The Quarriers led 20-14. After getting the ball on their own 35 yard line, the Cavaliers ran three plays, two of which were big pass plays, to get into the end zone. Kirsch hit Rafferty for 25-yards with 2:49 to play. The extra point was good by Poeppel to give St Thomas More a 21-20 lead.
The Quarriers were able to get the ball to the Cavalier 41 yard line with about 2:00 to go in the game. After a running play failed to get out of bounds on first down, Rentz spiked the ball to stop the click and bring up a 3rd down and 8 for Dell Rapids. The Quarriers next play was an incomplete pass to put the Quarriers into fourth down. The fourth down play was an incomplete pass, and the Cavaliers took over on downs with 1:29 to play in the game. St Thomas More was able to run out the clock for the win.
The Quarriers finished the game with 248 yards of total offense, 43 passing yards and 205 rushing yards. Rentz was 4-13 passing for 43 yards and an interception. Alex Kringen had three catches for 32 yards, and Adam Nagelhout had one catch for 11 yards. Gillogly had 19 carries for 98 yards and two touchdowns. Nick Boever had nine carries for 46 yards. Nagelhout had 10 carries for 38 yards. Seth Spielmann finished with five carries for 14 yards. Price had eight tackles and an interception. Gillogly finished with seven tackles. Josh Heinemann had six tackles, and Boever finished with five tackles. Andrew Hegge had a sack in the game, and Jeffrey Schuch had an interception.
The Quarrier season comes to an end with a 7-3 overall record.
The Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals had their senior night recognition during the final regular season home match on Monday, October 23rd. The Cardinals hosted the De Smet Bulldogs in their final match. De Smet came away with a straight set win by scores of 25-14, 25-19, 25-22.
Maddie Schwebach led the team with six kills on the night. Cassy Geraets added four kills, while Cassie Mullaney had three kills. Adyn Heinricy had nine digs and two ace serves. Ella Heinitz, Geraets, and Carly Maxwell all had two digs each. Geraets led the team with 18 set assists.
St Mary finishes the regular season with a 10-19 record.
The Dell Rapids Quarriers came from behind to win a thrilling five-set match over the Beresford Watchdogs on Monday, October 23rd. It was an exciting win for the Quarriers on senior night. Dell Rapids won by set scores of 25-27, 18-25, 25-19, 25-22, 15-12.
Dell Rapids held a 24-21 lead in the first set before Beresford rallied to pull off the stunning first set win. The Watchdogs rode that momentum into the second set to take a 2-0 lead over Dell Rapids. The Quarriers rallied in the third set to force a fourth. Dell Rapids was able to hold off Beresford to force the fifth and final set. The Quarriers jumped out to an 8-3 lead only to see Beresford tie the game at 8-8 moments later. Dell Rapids was then able to get ahead 12-9 before holding on for the victory.
Brooke Klein finished with 47 digs and an ace in the match. Hannah Fletcher had 44 set assists, 23 digs, three kills and an ace serve. Jayda Knuppe had 11 kills, nine digs, two aces and a block. Maria Jackson added six kills and six digs. Shelby Apland had three kills and five digs. Sydney Stofferahn finished with 16 kills. Trinity Gordon had 50 digs, 17 kills and five aces. Sam Price had 12 digs, while Dezi Rus had 16 digs.
Dell Rapids end their regular season with an 18-9 record. The Quarriers finished as the #2 seed in Region 3A and will have an opening round bye in the Region 3A tournament. Dell Rapids will play on Thursday, November 2nd, at Sioux Falls Christian High School after the Sioux Falls Christian vs #4/#5 winner. Winners on November 2nd will advance to the Sweet 16.
John Benjamin Devlin, 89, passed away on Thursday, October 5, 2017 at Good Samaritan Center in Sioux Falls, SD. John Benjamin Devlin, son of John Francis Devlin and Mary (Tobin) Devlin, was born April 29, 1928 in Sioux Falls, SD. John was a lifelong resident of Sioux Falls. He attended Cathedral High School. Grateful for having shared his life are his five children, Tim (Lynn), John (Mary), Dan (Jill), all of Sioux Falls, Mary Zakrzewski of O’Neill, NE, and Vince (Julie) of Dell Rapids; 12 grandchildren, Bridget, John, Beau, Ben, Dustin, Stacy, Sara, Jean, Paula, Jeff, Michelle, and Rachel; 16 great grandchildren, Bryn, Erin, Caelan, Cullen, Michael, Andrew, Ethan, Jymira, Quinton, Paxton, James, Claire, Oliver, Jack, Luke and Conor, along with several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Jean; his parents; three sisters, Mary, Jeanine, and Anne; great grandchildren, Boston and Jeff; and a son-in-law, Dave Zakrzewski.
Milo Henry Holt, 92, a long-time Jacksonville, FL resident, passed away peacefully Saturday, Oct. 7 following several months of declining health. He will be buried in the family plot in rural South Dakota. On-line condolences may be left at the Hardage-Giddens Oaklawn Chapel website.
Milo was born in rural Dell Rapids, SD, in 1924 to Henry G. Holt and Gertie M. (Monger) Holt, the youngest of four children. He graduated from Dell Rapids High School and farmed in the area until he retired in 1980. He then relocated to Jacksonville because of family in the area and became a financial advisor for the American Classic Securities until 2008 when he once again retired.
Milo had been an active member of Toastmasters International, Sons of Norway Gateway to Florida Lodge 3-541 and Shepherd of the Woods Lutheran Church. He served meals on wheels and was a Sunday school teacher. He was very proud of his Lutheran faith and his Norwegian ancestry since his Mother was born in Norway.
He was preceded in death by his parents and three older sisters. Surviving family include varied nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews.

Students at both the Dell Rapids Middle School and Dell Rapids High School held fundraisers recently to raise money for hurricane relief.
The middle school held a week-long “Penny War” the week of October 16th – 20th. Students could bring in spare change throughout the week with the winning class receiving a movie and popcorn party for the whole grade. Points were accumulated throughout the week for each grade level. Points were gained by adding pennies to grade’s jug. Points were subtracted by adding silver coins and bills to the other grade’s jugs. The 6th grade finished with -19,001 points. The 7th grade had -13,763 points. 5th grade finished with -13,762 points. The winning class of the movie and popcorn party was the 8th grade class with a total of +1,922 points.
Throughout the “Penny War” week, the students and staff of the middle school raised $1,186.24! All the money will be donated to the American Red Cross for relief efforts following hurricanes Harvey, Irma, and Maria.
The Dell Rapids High School also held their own fundraiser that also raised funds for hurricane relief. Raffle tickets were sold to the high school students for $2.00 each. The raffle earned the students a chance to throw a whipped-cream pie at Mr. Bunkers during the pep rally on Friday, October 20th. A few lucky students were drawn out and able to throw their pies in front of the entire middle and high school during the pep rally. The high school students were able to raise $200 to be added to the hurricane relief.
Shirley Snoozy, 90, of Dell Rapids passed away on Friday, October 20, 2017 at the Dells Nursing and Rehab Center. Her funeral service was at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, October 25, 2017 in the Lutheran Church of Dell Rapids Chapel with Rev. Dr. Jeff Sorenson officiating. Interment was in the Dell Rapids Cemetery. Casketbearers were Shirley’s grandchildren. Visitation was on Tuesday, October 24, 2017 at noon with the family present from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. at Kahler Funeral Home. www.kahlerfh.com
Shirley Viola Nielsen was born on May 25, 1927 at Dell Rapids, SD, the daughter of Chris and Ana (Anderson) Nielsen. She grew up on two farms near Dell Rapids and one near Baltic. She attended Noyes Country School and graduated from Baltic High School in 1945. After high school she moved to Sioux Falls and attended Nettleton College. She worked as a bookkeeper at the Sioux Falls Gas Company. She married Ed Snoozy on May 23, 1948 at the Lutheran Church of Dell Rapids. After their marriage, the couple rented a farm seven miles west of Dell Rapids. In 1950, they bought a farm across the road and moved there in 1951. In 1966, Ed invented a tractor hitch and it was patented. For twenty-five years, Ed and Shirley sold tractor hitches at fairs and at their home. In 1973, they became a Dixon mower dealer. They continued to sell and repair mowers for many years. After Ed’s death in 1984, Shirley continued to sell and repair mowers. Since 1986, Shirley has spent winters with her daughters. She continued to live on the home place, garden, run the mower business and help her son with farming chores until her health declined. She became a resident of Dells Nursing and Rehab Center in July of 2017.
She is survived by her son, Gerald of Dell Rapids; her daughters, Beverly (Dennis) Dekam of Pipestone, MN, Sylvia (Hank) Vogt of Ruthton, MN, Darlene (David) Sparks of Laguna Woods, CA and Karen (Al) Lange of Pipestone, MN; her 17 grandchildren and her 21 great-grandchildren; her brother, Norman (Vera) Nielsen of Renner and her many extended family and friends.

Dell Rapids School District students are benefiting from the fruits of local growers’ labors not only during National Farm to School Month, but year-round.
The school district’s partnership with Hoversten Orchard north of Brandon, SD, is just one example. Over the past two months, orchard owner Dave Hoversten has been personally delivering a wide variety of apples grown at the orchard – up to 800 apples, or 8 bushels, a week. As a result, Dell Rapids students have gotten to munch on a wide variety of apples that include Honeycrisp, Gala, Zestar!, Sweet Sixteen, Ginger Gold, and Williams’ Pride.
Deb Emmert, Dell Rapids Food Service Director, said she’s been partnering with Hoversten for several years to supply apples to the lunchroom during his regular growing season. “The best part of going through a local orchard is that we get types of apples kids have never heard of before,” Emmert said. “The response we’ve gotten is remarkable. Students love the taste and they can tell when we have to go back to store-bought.”
Dell Rapids’ breakfast and lunch programs are operated by Lunchtime Solutions Inc., a K-12 food service management company based out of Dakota Dunes, SD. The apples are being served as part of Lunchtime Solutions’ monthly Farmers Market Selections program, through which locally grown produce is featured on school lunch menus accompanied by education about the fruit or vegetable and information about the local grower. October is also National Farm to School Month, which celebrates the connections happening all over the country between children and local food.
Emmert said she tries to serve local fruits and vegetables as much as possible throughout the year, partnering with several other growers in the area.
Dell Rapids High School students have enjoyed eating locally grown apples from Hoversten Orchard north of Brandon, SD, throughout the month of October.
“There are lots of reasons why it’s important to serve local foods,” she said. “These growers contribute to the school district through being located here, so supporting them helps everyone. And the education our kids receive is great – they find out more about the food they eat and see they can actually go and pick it themselves.”
The burgeoning demand for locally grown foods is one reason Hoversten Orchard has stayed in business for 30 years, Hoversten said. Not only is there more of a market for the fruit of the orchard’s 5,000 apple trees, he’s been able to expand the crops he provides to corn, beans and other products. But it’s the apples that have everyone’s taste buds hooked.
“Apples you get at the store are picked before they are ripe,” he said. “We wait for them to develop more before picking them, so they have a better flavor. A ripe apple picked off the tree is the best you can get.”
Emmert and Hoversten both said they look forward to continuing to work together. “They are the sweetest people and they provide excellent customer service,” Emmert said of the Hoversten family. Several family members work together to run the orchard and farms. “I’m glad our students are able to benefit from this partnership and the orchard does, too. Everyone wins.”
For the past 15 years, Lunchtime Solutions has provided healthy and delicious meals to Dell Rapids students through the schools’ breakfast and lunch programs.
“Our program centers on getting kids excited about eating lunch at school,” said Jennifer Hopf, Area Director for Lunchtime Solutions. “We think it’s important to provide a wide variety of menu options and make sure students have unlimited access to fresh fruits and vegetables every day.”

The Dell Rapids St Mary Caridnals and Dell Rapids Quarriers sent multiple runners to the 2017 South Dakota State Cross Country meet on Saturday, October 21st, in Rapid City. Dell Rapids had eight runners participate in state, while St Mary had six runners in the state meet.
The entire St Mary boys team competed and finished 13th with 119 points. Ipswich won the boys State B title with 29 points. Freeman Academy/Marion was second with 32 points, and Burke/South Central was third with 39 points.
Connor Libis (39th) finished at 18:34.20. Jacob Vogel (49th) had a time of 18:53.88. Ryan Eining (101st) finished in 20:25.32. Seth Roemen (105th) had a time of 20:35.67. Thomas Eining (119th) had a time of 21:53.97.
Ella Heinitz placed 21st individually in the girls competition with a time of 21:02.87.
The entire Quarrier girls team also competed in the state meet. Dell Rapids finished 12th with a total of 227 points. Hill City won the girls State A title with 33 points. Custer was second with 64 points, and St Thomas More placed third with 67 points.
Shaylee Hoff (34th) had a time of 20:57.18. Aspen Hansen (85th) had a time of 22:28.60. Kathryn Fletcher (86th) finished at 22:29.12. Katrina Kreul (106th) completed in 23:05.30. Alli DeStigter (117th) had a time of 24:15.53. Madysen VanOverbeeke (119th) finished in 24:27.82.
Canyon Lowman and Carter Wynja competed individually for Dell Rapids in the boys race. Wynja (79th) had a time of 18:48.93. Lowman (101st) finished in 19:21.20.
