Two Cardinals Earn DVC Football Honors

DRSM LogoTwo Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal football players were recognized by the Dakota Valley Conference.  Senior Logan Gaspar was named to the DVC All-Conference team.  Senior Tate Hansen was an Honorable Mention.

Quarriers Win Thriller to Advance to Sweet 16

NewDRLogoFor the second match in a row, the Dell Rapids Quarriers overcame a 2-0 deficit to come back and win the match.  This time Dell Rapids did it in one of the finals of the Region 3A Tournament.  Dell Rapids defeated the Baltic Bulldogs in five sets by scores of 17-25, 22-25, 25-14, 25-21, 15-13 to advance to the Sweet 16 Round of the 2017 South Dakota Class A volleyball playoffs.

Baltic opened up the match on a quick run and rode the momentum to take the first set over the Quarriers.  They continued the momentum into the second set and found themselves with a 2-0 set lead heading into the third set.  Dell Rapids was able to get rolling in the third set and gained some momentum with a 25-14 win.  The Quarriers picked up more and more steam in the fourth set as they held off the Bulldogs for the 25-21 win to force the fifth set.  Dell Rapids got out to a 4-0 lead in the fifth set and never lost the lead to complete the comeback win.

Trinity Gordon had 13 kills for the Quarriers.  Sydney Stofferahn had 11 kills.  Maria Jackson had eight kills, Jayda Knuppe had six kills, and Shelby Apland had five kills.  Brooke Klein finished with 32 digs.  Gordon also had 21 digs.  Jackson tallied 16 digs, and Hannah Fletcher had 13 digs.  Sam Price also had five digs.  Fletcher ended the match with 36 set assists.

Dell Rapids (19-9) will be the #13 seed in the Sweet 16 round and will play #4 seed Madison on Tuesday, November 7th.  The match can be seen on Big Sioux Media.

Dell Rapids Veteran’s Memorial Park Gets New Statue

KoreanWarThe Dell Rapids Veteran’s Memorial Park had a new statue installed on Wednesday, November 1st.  The new sculpture to the park was installed about 1:00 p.m.  The new sculpture is the Korean War sculpture.  The sculpture joins the Old Soldier’s Monument, the Fallen Soldier monument, the Revolutionary War, and the Gulf War.

Earlier in the year, Dell Rapids Veteran’s Memorial Park had the Blue Star Memorial marker dedicated.  That dedication took place on Saturday, April 22nd.

Plans are still in place to add sculptures for World War I, World War II, the Vietnam War, and Enduring Freedom memorial.

2017 Pumpkin Contest Winners

Two winners of our the 2017 Dell Rapids Chamber and Big Sioux Media pumpkin decorating contest have been determined.  There were over 40 entries in this year’s contest, which was the highest number of participants in the annual event!  Pictures were submitted throughout the month of October, and then those pictures were displayed during the annual Downtown Trick-Or-Treat event on Friday, October 27th.  Those attending the downtown event were able to vote for their favorite pumpkin.  Over 200 votes were cast!

The winners for the contest were Jeremy P. and Easton D.!!  Easton won a $100 prize package from the Dell Rapids Chamber of Commerce that included gift certificates to Video Plus, the Dells Theater, and Dells Bowl.  Jeremy won a $100 prize package from Big Sioux Media that included a Big Sioux Media etched Yeti mug, and gift certificates to T&C, LaDelle & Fourth, and school spirit wear of choice.

The Dell Rapids Chamber of Commerce and Big Sioux Media would like to thank everyone who decorated a pumpkin and sent their photos to be a part of the contest.  We also want to thank all of those who took time to vote for their favorite pumpkin at the Downtown Trick-Or-Treat event!  Both groups look forward to next year’s contest!

Duane Larson

larsond picDuane Larson, 94 of Brandon, formerly of Chester, passed away on Sunday, October 29, 2017. His funeral service is at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, November 6, 2017 in the Chester United Methodist Church. Visitation is two hours prior to the start of the service in the church. Interment with military honors is in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Chester. Funeral arrangements are under the care of Kahler Funeral Home, Dell Rapids.

Duane A. Larson was born May 9, 1923 in Bridgewater, SD.  He was the eldest of August and Gwendolyn (McMartin) Larson’s eight children.  He married Vivian Jenson, June 20, 1944.  On October 29, 2017, he passed peacefully into Glory.

On January 18, 1945, Duane enlisted in the US Army.  He achieved the rank of Sargent and served as the assistant to a general on Guam and Saipan.  Duane was extraordinarily proud of his service during World War II.

After returning from the Army, Duane farmed in the Chester area and was a custodian at the Chester School.  In 1963, Duane was named Postmaster in Chester.  In 1986, Duane became the Supervisor, Bulk Mail at the Sioux Falls Regional Post Office until his retirement in 1990.

Duane was a servant for his community.  He was a member of the American Legion Arthur Peterson Post 136 for 57 years serving as Adjutant for many of those.  He served on the board of directors for Interlakes Telecommunications Cooperative, Lake County Zoning Board, and Chester Sanitary District.  He was a long-time volunteer fireman in Chester.  He was a long-time Chester Booster Club member and recipient of Booster of the Year.  Duane was a Lay Speaker in the United Methodist Church, speaking and leading services across the region, as well as Sunday School teacher and custodian for the church in Chester.

Grateful for having shared in his life are a daughter Kathleen, siblings Eileen Keese, Fay (Shirley), Russell (Evelyn), Carl (Dixie), and Martha Nelson, and many nieces and nephews.  He was proceeded in death by his parents, wife Vivian, brother David, and sister Elizabeth.
Duane was an unassuming man, happy to serve others in ways that brought little fanfare to himself.  He had friends far and wide with no one remaining a stranger.  He served God and Jesus Christ by serving others as son, husband, father, and friend.

Cardinal Volleyball Season Ends in Region 4B

DRSM LogoThe Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal volleyball team’s season game to an end in the second round of the Region 4B Tournament on Tuesday, October 31st, in Madison.  The Cardinals lost in straight sets to the #1 seed Chester Flyers by scores of 25-6, 25-13, 25-15.

Cassie Mullaney led the team on the offensive end with four kills in the match.  Veronica Beck had three kills, while Cassy Geraets, Rhiannon Glazier, and Maddie Schwebach all had two kills each.  Glazier also finished with two ace serves and a dig.  Adyn Heinricy had nine digs.  Mullaney and Schwebach each had a block at the net.  Geraets had 14 set assists for St Mary.

The Cardinals finish their season with a record of 11-19.

Cardinal Volleyball Wins Region 4B Opener

DRSMvsMC_VB_10-30-17The Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals earned an opening-round win of the Region 4B Tournament on Monday, October 30th, at Dell Rapids St Mary High School.  The #8 seeded Cardinals defeated the #9 seed Mitchell Christian Golden Eagles in straight sets by scores of 27-25, 25-23, 25-23.

The entire match was back and forth.  In the opening set, neither team had a lead of more than two or three points.  The Golden Eagles rallied after trailing 23-21 late in the set to take a 24-23 lead.  The Cardinals scored the next two points to regain the lead at 25-24.  After Mitchell Christian tied the set at 25-25, St Mary scored the next two points for the win.

Mitchell Christian seemed to be in position to win the second set after getting out to a five-point late in the second set.  The Golden Eagles lead 19-13.  St Mary scored three in a row to cut the lead to 19-16.  After a Golden Eagle point to push their lead to 20-16, the Cardinals went on a 7-2 run to take a 23-22 lead.  St Mary closed out the set scoring two of the final three points to get the come-from-behind win.

The first part of the third set played out much like the first set.  Neither team was able to build a lead of more than a point or two until the Golden Eagles rallied to take a 15-11 lead.  The Cardinals rallied once again to tie the set at 17-17.  The two teams went back and forth again with the score getting tied at 18-18, 19-19, 20-20, and 21-21.  The Cardinals rallied for the next three points to get to match point at 24-21.  The Golden Eagles cut the lead to 24-23, but a kill by Cassy Geraets ended the match.

St Mary will now play the #1 seed Chester Flyers on Tuesday, October 31st, in the next round of the Region 4B Tournament.  The match will be held in Madison at 5:00 p.m.

Corduroy & Pixie Dust Has Ribbon Cutting

CorduroyAndPixieDustRibbonCorduroy & Pixie Dust, the newest store in downtown Dell Rapids, held it’s ribbon cutting and grand opening on Saturday, October 28th.  Owners Heather and Jason Ness held the celebration from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.  The store actually opened its doors on Thursday, September 14th.

Corduroy & Pixie Dust features clothes for girls and boys from newborns all the way to age eight.  The store is open three days a week – Thursdays from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., Fridays from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and Saturdays 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Gerry Bunkers

Gerry BunkersGerald “Gerry” A. Bunkers, 78, passed away Thursday, October 26, 2017, at Bethany Home in Sioux Falls, SD. A Mass of Christian burial will begin at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, November 2, at Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Sioux Falls. Visitation will begin at 6 p.m. Wednesday at Heritage Funeral Home in Sioux Falls, followed by a prayer service at 7 p.m.  On-line condolences may be left at the Zinzley Funeral Home website.

A longtime resident of Sioux Falls and fixture in the brokerage community, Gerry was born May 12, 1939, to Andrew and Agnes (Dresch) Bunkers in Dell Rapids, SD. He attended St. Mary’s High School in Dell Rapids, and he went on to earn a business degree at the University of South Dakota. During college, he served in the Army ROTC program.

On June 21, 1963, he married Donna Warn at the Cathedral of St. Joseph in Sioux Falls. The couple moved to Omaha, NE, where Gerry worked several years in construction management. They later moved to Salem, SD, where they owned and operated the Chess Lounge and Pleasant Acres Restaurant. Gerry later earned his brokerage license and worked for A.G. Edwards in Sioux Falls, earning several corporate awards during his decades-long career with the firm.

Gerry was a member of Holy Spirit Catholic Church. He was a longtime member of the Knights of Columbus and the Kiwanis Club. Gerry was an avid hunter, fisherman, boater and skier, but he truly loved spending time with relatives and friends at the family’s cabin on Lake Madison, SD.

Gerry is survived by his wife, Donna of Sioux Falls; children, John (Jill) of Golden Valley, MN, Kelly (Scott) Thien of Indianapolis, IN, Mike of Burnsville, MN, and Jeremy (Kelsey) of Bozeman, MT; siblings, Jen (Jack) Donovan, Bob (Cecelia), Ken (Glenda), Jean (Ray) Pederson, Mary Sue, Diane (Bob) Reiff, and George (Gwen); eleven grandchildren, Jacob, Josephine, Jessica and Thomas Bunkers, Andrew, Joshua and Katie Thien, Cameron and Caleigh Bunkers, Logan and Taylor Bunkers; and many nieces, nephews and other relatives.  He is preceded in death by his parents; brother Earl; sister-in-law Ellen; and grandson Daniel Thien.

Burial will be private. The Bunkers and Thien families would like to thank all the family, friends and caregivers who helped Gerry through his recent illnesses. Ghosts and Goblins Enjoy Downtown Trick or Treat

2017DowntownTrickorTreatHundreds of kids braved the cold and wind for the 8th annual Downtown Dell Rapids Trick-or-Treat event on Friday, October 27th.  The downtown street was was filled with trick-or-treaters and events for everyone to enjoy.  The event included Mr. Twister balloon twisting, a photobooth, train rides, and a haunted house.

Despite the cold temperatures, businesses said they still handed out lots of candy to all the kids.
