Cardinals Boys Golf 7th at DVC Meet

DRSM LogoThe Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal boys golf team finished seventh at the Dakota Valley Conference tournament on Monday, May 7th at Colman.  The Cardinals finished with a team score of 344.  Arlington won the boys title with a score of 272.  Deubrook was second with 273, and Colman-Egan placed third with 280.  Deubrook won the girls team title with a score of 290.

Jacob Saude finished with a round of 103 for the low score for St Mary.  Josh Eining had a 120, Luke Reecy a 121, and Jason Cook a 126.

St Mary will travel to Brookings on Monday, May 21st and Tuesday, May 2nd.

Willis Neels

Neels, Willis obit photoWillis Lee Neels, 76, of Dell Rapids, SD passed away Saturday, May 5, 2018 at Avera Dougherty House Hospice in Sioux Falls. Funeral services will be at 10:30 AM Thursday, May 10, 2018 at Reformed Church in Dell Rapids. Burial will be in Logan Reformed Church Cemetery, rural Dell Rapids. Visitation with the family present will be from 5:00 to 7:00 PM Wednesday, May 9, 2018 at Minnehaha Funeral Home in Dell Rapids.

Willis, better known as Willie, was born on February 23, 1942 in Oskaloosa, Iowa to Leonard and Margaret (Stouwie) Neels. He grew up in Pella, Iowa. On June 10, 1960 Willis married Dorothy Poortinga in Otley, Iowa. In 1974 they moved to Sioux Falls, SD and later moving to Dell Rapids, SD in 2010.

He attended Pella Christian School until the 9th grade. He then went to work at Rolscreen in Pella, Iowa for a brief time until deciding to go into his lifelong profession of driving truck. His love for truck driving took him into different types of trucks. He was a bulk milk truck driver, over-the-road driver and hauled gas for Thermo Gas. The last 7 years as a local truck driver hauling wood to Larson’s in Brookings, SD. He was forced to quit driving truck in August of 2016 when he was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer.

Willie was an avid bowler. He participated in many National bowling tournaments throughout the United States. Camping with his grandkids was the joy of his life. His love for camping took him and Dorothy on many excursions with them. In his younger years he was a softball fast pitcher. Willie was involved in church in many ways. One of his enjoyments was being a youth leader, for 5 years, which used his profession of truck driving to take 19 kids and sponsors to Rocky Mountain High church retreat.

Grateful for having shared his life are his wife, Dorothy; daughter, Rhonda (Randy) Pierret; son, Ron Neels; daughter, Ronitta (Dennis) Sandahl; seven grandchildren, Regan (Brian) Anderson, Brandi (Jerod) Matthews, Chelsea Sandahl, Tricia Neels, Mark Pierret, Jessica Sandahl and Karisa Neels; five great-grandchildren, Jaydn Anderson, Mylie Anderson, Makenzie Anderson, Beckett Matthews and Elsie Pierret; sister, Loretta Thomas; brother, Roger Neels as well as nieces; nephews; relatives and friends. Willie was preceded in death by his parents.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials are directed to Prairie Cancer Center, Avera @ Home Hospice or Avera Dougherty House Hospice.

Quarriers and Cardinals Run at Dells Invite

TrackLogoBoth the Dell Rapids Quarrier and Dell Rapids St Mary track teams participated in the Dells Invite at Dell Rapids High School on Monday, May 7th.  Seniors for the Dell Rapids track team and girls golf team were recognized during senior day at the meet.

The Dell Rapids girls team won the team title with 149 points.  Colman-Egan was second with 95 points.  Tri-Valley finished third with 78 points.  St Mary placed fifth with 60 points.

The Dell Rapids boys team also won the team title with 143 points.  Tri-Valley was second with 126 points.  Garretson finished third with 68 points.  St Mary finished sixth with 38 points.

Dell Rapids will be at Dakota Valley on Thursday, May 10th.  St Mary will be at Estelline for the DVC meet also on Thursday, May 10th.

Dells Baseball Honors Seniors, Splits with Madison

DRvsMad_Baseball_5-6-18_1In the final home games of the season for the Dell Rapids baseball team, Dell Rapids split with Madison in a double-header at Rickeman Field on Sunday, May 6th.  Dell Rapids took the first game 4-1, but lost the second game 6-4.  Between the two games, Dell Rapids honored the seniors on the team.

Dell Rapids jumped out in front early on Madison in the first inning of the first game.  Jeffrey Schuch hit an RBI single, and Elijah Story drew a bases-loaded walk to give Dell Rapids a 2-0 lead.  Dell Rapids added another run in the second inning when Tate Kolbeck scored on a wild pitch.  Madison scored their lone run on a passed ball in the top of the fourth inning.  Tyson Dahler hit a deep fly-ball double  to center field scoring Schuch for the final Dell Rapids run of the game.

Eddie Price finished with two hits.  Carter Gullickson, JD Holm, Dahler, Schuch, and Story all had hits.  Dahler, Story, and Schuch had the RBIs for Dell Rapids.  Priced earned the win pitching five innings giving up one unearned run on no hits while walking five and striking out 10 batters.  Jake Steineke pitched the final two innings giving up three hits and two walks.

Between the two games, Dell Rapids honored their seven seniors.  The seniors this year are Nick Palmer, Tyson Dahler, Matt Gillogly, Carter Gullickson, Elijah Story, Lealand Randel, and Jeffrey Schuch. DRvsMad_Baseball_5-6-18_2

Madison struck first in the second game of the day.  Madison scored four times in the bottom of the first inning on two line drive singles, a passed ball, and a wild pitch.  Madison scored again in the second inning on a wild pitch to increase their lead to 5-0.  Dell Rapids got on the board in the top of the third when Gullickson scored on a wild pitch.  Dell Rapids cut into the lead more in the top of the fourth inning.  Story scored on an RBI triple by Keegan Miller.  Dahler had an RBI ground out to drive home Miller to cut the lead to 5-3.  Madison added another run in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI double.  Dell Rapids again cut the lead to two runs after an RBI single by Story in the top of the fifth, but that was as close as Dell Rapid would get.

Story had three hits in the second game.  Gullickson, Schuch, Miller, Gillogly, and Price all had hits as well.  Story, Miller and Dahler had the RBIs in the game.  Gillogly pitched the first two innings giving up five runs, four earned, on four hits while walking two and striking out two.  Logan Stone pitched three innings giving up just one earned run on two hits with one walk and three strikeouts.  Story pitched one inning and just allowed one walk.

Dell Rapids (9-2) will now move into the divisional playoffs next week.

Dakota Relays Shortened by Weather

TrackLogoThe 93rd annual Howard Wood Dakota Relays were shorted due to the weather on Saturday, May 5th, and events that were in progresses were worked out by the meet officials.  All of Friday’s events were completed without issue.  Over 3,000 middle school, high school, and college athletes competed in the event over the weekend.

Several Quarrier and Cardinal track athletes participated in the event.

Both Dell Rapids and Dell Rapids St Mary will be at the Dells Invite at Dell Rapids High School on Monday, May 7th.

Dept of SD Veterans of Foreign Wars Announces First Ever Youth Baseball Grant Results

Dell Rapids Baseball Association Receives Grant Dollars from SD VFW

SDVFWBaseballLogoSioux Falls (May 4, 2018) – Department of SD VFW Baseball Chairman, Danny Frisby-Griffin, released the results of the program’s first Youth Baseball Grant Results. Drawing upon the initial set-aside funds and a generous donation from the Frisby-Griffin family, VFW Baseball was able to provide a total of $2500 divided among the following three grant applications: Selby Teeners, Dell Rapids Baseball Association and Webster Youth Baseball Association.

The new grant program was created to help ensure youth across South Dakota have an opportunity to participate in baseball. In addition to the grant program, the Department of SD VFW Baseball also created a Youth Baseball Community of the Year Award (monetary) and established a Veterans Program Donation process to allow VFW Baseball to donate to various VFW Veterans programs and initiatives.

Webster Youth Baseball Association plan on utilizing their funding to build a batting cage for the 8U, 10U and 12U baseball teams as well as their youth softball teams. Dell Rapids Baseball Association are also utilizing their grant to add an outdoor batting cage serving over 200 players. Selby Teeners are purchasing new uniforms in addition to other equipment required to provide play safe youth baseball.

“This is an awesome opportunity for the Department of SD VFW Baseball program to give back to the future leaders of our nation,“ said Frisby-Griffin. “And who knows, there may be a future major league player out there that just needed a bit of support to keep playing.”

D/C/H Hands Dell Rapids First Loss

DRvsDCH_Baseball_5-3-18Deubrook/Castlewood/Hamlin handed Dell Rapids baseball their first loss in over a year on Thursday, May 3rd at Rickeman Field in Dell Rapids.  D/C/H scored the first 10 runs of the game and won 10-1 over Dell Rapids.

D/C/H gained momentum in the second inning with a big two-out rally.  After scoring the first run of the game on a line-drive single, D/C/H had a runner on first with two outs.  Dell Rapids starting pitcher Logan Stone had a 2-2 count in his favor before issuing a walk.  D/C/H then belted four straight singles while scoring four more runs to take a 5-0 lead.  Dell Rapids put two runners on base in the bottom of the second, but failed to score.

Dell Rapids able to load the bases with two outs in the bottom of the third inning, but again they were unable to get a run.  D/C/H scored another run in the top of the fourth inning to extend their lead to 6-0.  Four more runs came in to score in the top of the sixth inning to push the lead to 10-0.  Dell Rapids scored their lone run in the bottom of the sixth when Keegan Miller scored on a wild pitch.

Dell Rapids was held to just five hits offensively.  Carter Gullickson, Jeffrey Schuch, Miller, Eddie Price, and JD Holm all had hits in the game.  Dell Rapids hitters struck out a total of nine times.

Stone started the game pitching three innings giving up six runs, five earned on eight hits while walking one and striking out three.  Elijah Story pitched two innings giving up no runs on two hits while walking one and striking out two.  Price pitched an inning giving up four runs, two earned, on three this with two walks and three strikeouts.  Matt Gillogly pitched the final inning giving up one walk and striking out three batters.

Dell Rapids (8-1) will host Madison in a double header on Sunday, May 6th.

Margaret Joneson

joneson picMargaret M. Joneson, 88, of Dell Rapids, passed away on Wednesday, May 2, 2018 after a long struggle with Alzheimer’s. Her funeral service will begin at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, May 7, 2018 at Kahler Funeral Home. Interment will be in the Dell Rapids Cemetery. Visitation with the family present will be on Sunday, May 6, 2018 from 2:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. at the funeral home.

Margaret was born on June 17, 1929 to Herman and Mary Olson. She graduated from Dell Rapids High School and attended Nettleton College. She married Myron Joneson on January 19, 1951. They lived in San Diego and Honolulu while Myron served in the Marines. Upon his discharge, they came back to farm near Dell Rapids.

Many people will remember Margaret by her kitchen, not just the quality of food that was prepared in it but also by the quantity, serving family and friends, whether planned or drop ins, at any time of day. As the wife of a farmer who was active in the community, mealtime revolved around his schedule and yet she could make it seem like that was the plan all along. She had the gift of hospitality and a wide variety of people have been blessed by it.

After her own kids were grown, she started caring for young children of other families in the neighborhood. When grandsons Michael and Brooks came along, they often spent summers at Grandpa and Grandma’s and a new generation experienced the blessings of living in Margaret’s Kitchen.

She enjoyed traveling anywhere, especially to see family; bowling, until arthritis took the fun out of it; and playing cards with anyone that could hold a hand.

Grateful to God for having been blessed by her nurturing are her son, Mark and his wife, Linda; her daughter, Mary; her grandchildren, Michael, Brooks and Ali and her sister, Evelyn Pederson.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Myron, son, Mike, daughter-in-law, Roxene, son-in-law, Bud Purvis and an infant sister, Edith.

Dell Rapids’ Students, Teacher Honored at NCWIT Ceremony

MADISON, S.D., May 2, 2018 –Twenty-seven young women from North and South Dakota have begun to write their life stories in the field of technology.

“We need to know the stories of women in computing today,” said Dakota State University President Dr. José-Marie Griffiths, “to awaken this generation of young women, and the next and the next, to their potential to participate and lead in the computer workforce.”

Eva Bradshaw, regional affiliate manager with the National Center for Women and Information Technology (NCWIT), praised the achievements of “these brave young women” at the 2018 NCWIT Aspirations in Computing (AiC) Award Ceremony held on the Dakota State University campus April 23.

TomesDSUHonorees in the North/South Dakota affiliate region from Dell Rapids High School include: Amanda Tomes, who received honorable mention and is planning a career in chemical engineering; and Bergen Weiland who also received honorable mention and is planning a career in artificial intelligence and robotics. Selection is based on the student’s aptitude and aspirations in technology and computing, leadership ability, academic history, and plans for post-secondary education. WeilandDSU

Liza Mundy, the featured speaker, highlighted stories of other women in computing, women called into service during World War II. They are featured in her best-selling book Code Girls: The Untold Story of the American Women Code Breakers in World War II.

During the war years a majority of men were called into service, forcing the military to look at other sources for intelligence department workers, namely school teachers and students at women’s colleges. “Global war is the mother of innovation and inclusion,” Mundy said.

Today global war involves cyber security issues, and there are not enough men to fill workforce needs in technology, Griffiths said, so “the ongoing success of our world depends on getting more women into computing.”

Guest speaker Linda Daugaard, first lady of South Dakota, said the Aspiration award winners represent “a rich and ready source… of highly qualified young women ready to enter the computer or information technology area.”

Bradshaw noted that NCWIT’s Aspirations in Computing organization can provide a long-term community for female technologists by encouraging persistence in computing through continuous engagement and ongoing encouragement at each pivotal stage of their educational and professional development.

HeadrickDSUTwo educators were honored at the event as well. Tina Boldt-Belden, technology coordinator and high school computer teacher at Estelline School District, was this year’s teacher award winner. Runner-up was Scott Headrick, K-12 technology integrationist and high school personal finance and business math teacher at Dell Rapids Schools. Also honored was DSU freshman Alexis Vander Wilt, a collegiate national finalist.

Presenters included the Dakota State University faculty Dr. Pam Rowland, Dr. Ashley Podhradsky, and Rob Honomichl. Sponsoring partners for the 2018 event were Dakota State University, the National Center for Women and Information Technology, AT&T, SBS CyberSecurity, and DSU’s CybHER program.

This is the twelfth season of the Award for Aspirations in Computing (AiC), and the seventh year with regional affiliates. The South and North Dakota region honored eight winners at their first event in 2013.

Dakota State University is a public university located in Madison, S.D. Cardinal Boys Golf 7th at St Mary Invite

DRSM LogoThe Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal boys golf team placed seventh at the St Mary Invite at Rocky Run Golf Course on Wednesday, May 2nd.  The Cardinals finished with a team score of 348.  Colman-Egan took first place with a 258.  Deubrook was second with 261, and Garretson placed third with a 263.  Deubrook won the girls division with a 270.  Flandreau was second with 283, and Garretson placed third with 324.

Jacob Saude had the low score individually for the Cardinals with a round of 99.  Jason Cook had a 117.  Luke Reecy finished with a round of 132 and Brandon Cook finished with a round of 139.

The Cardinals will be at the Dakota Valley Conference meet in Colman on Monday, May 7th.
