Cardinal Girls and Boys Track Both Place 9th in Baltic

DRSM LogoThe Dell Rapids Cardinal track teams went to Baltic on Tuesday, May 1st for the 60th Annual Baltic High School Invite.  Both teams placed ninth and had nearly identical scores.  The Cardinal girls team finished with 42 points.  Deubrook Area placed first with 150 points.  Colman-Egan was second with 133 points, and Garretson was third with 79 points.  The Cardinal boys team finished with 44 points.  Baltic won the boys title with 139 points.  Colman-Egan was second with 93 points, and Chester Area placed third with 83 points.

St Mary will have participants in either the O’Gorman Invite on Friday, May 4th or the Howard Wood Relays on Friday, May 4th and Saturday, May 5th.  St Mary will also participate in the Dells Invite on Monday, May 7th.

NewQuarrierLogoThe Dell Rapids Quarrier track team traveled to Lennox for the LenWood Invite on Tuesday, May 1st.  The Quarrier girls team had 25 individual/relays finish in the top eight on the day.  The Quarrier boys team had 26 individual/relays place in the top eight.

Dell Rapids will be at the Howard Wood Relays in Sioux Falls on Friday, May 4th and Saturday, May 5th before hosting a track meet on Monday, May 7th.

Lorraine Posey

Posey picLorraine E. (Holien) Posey, 96, of Dell Rapids passed away on Monday, April 30, 2018 at her home. Her Memorial Service will begin at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, May 4, 2018 in the Lutheran Church of Dell Rapids. Inurnment will be in the Bethania Cemetery, rural Trent. Visitation with the family present will be from 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. in the Chapel Hall at the Lutheran Church of Dell Rapids.

Lorraine Edith (Holien) was born on October 19, 1921 in West Jasper, Minnesota, the daughter of Oscar and Ida (Holter) Holien. She was baptized in Jasper Lutheran Church of Jasper and confirmed at Bethania Lutheran Church in June of 1936. She grew up in rural Jasper and attended grade school at Hermanson District #40 in Moody County. She graduated from Jasper High School in 1940 and then worked at Jasper Telephone Company and also worked as a telephone operator in Tucson, Arizona and Pipestone, Minnesota.

Lorraine married Jerome Posey on July 12, 1949 at Jasper Lutheran Church. They worked as a farm couple near Sherman, Alpena, Canton, and Jasper, Minnesota and moved to Dell Rapids in March of 1963. She was a dietary aide at the Dell Rapids Hospital from 1963, retiring in 1998.

She was active as a member of the Lutheran Church of Dell Rapids and her ELCA circle/bible study, quilting group and church for 50 plus years. She was very active in American Legion Auxiliary serving as secretary for almost 40 years. She enjoyed her 20 years of singing with Auxiliary sextette, The Quarrytones and had many happy memories of their times together. They especially enjoyed their performance at Mount Rushmore during the SD Centennial in 1989. She was chosen District Legionette of the year in 1999. She and Jerome were editors of the American Legion Post #65 newsletter for 16 years.

Lorraine and Jerome enjoyed traveling to 6 or more of his E Company WWII army reunions and hosted 2 of these reunions in Sioux Falls. May of 2004 found them and daughter Jolene traveling to Washington DC for WWII memorial dedication. They also enjoyed wonderful trips to Alaska and Maine.

She and Jolene enjoyed 10 plus years as members of the Red Rockettes Red Hat Group and made many good memories with these ladies over the years. She normally had a hat on her head and received many comments about these hats.

She was a faithful Christian lady and encouraged her family to be involved in their community and church activities as they married and started having families of their own. Many family reunions were enjoyed and she was instrumental in reminding people of the date/time place every year.

The coffee pot was always on at her house. Norwegian treats were special and she and her brother “Bud” recently enjoyed their annual lutefisk and lefse meal at her home. She also enjoyed making Norwegian wedding cakes for special birthday celebrations. She enjoyed her public TV shows Lawrence Welk, Minnesota Twins and spent this past winter putting together puzzles. She was a 60 year cancer survivor and participated in the Relay for Life for many years.

She loved her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren and always had a few pictures in her purse to show to anyone she visited or came to visit her.

Lorraine passed away on Monday, April 30 at the age of 96 years. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Jerome in March of 2014 and brothers Orvin, Art and Roy; sisters Idella, Dorothy and Ruth.

Lorraine is survived by one daughter, Jolene (Gaylon) Wehde of Crooks, SD, three sons, Burdette “Boone” (Cathleen) Posey of Bruce, SD, Olin (Lynette) Posey of Trent, SD and Mark (Karen) Posey of Titonka, IA, seven grandchildren; Sarah, Laura, Nathan, Justin, Adam, Austin, Brett; seventeen great-grandchildren Dylan, Blake, Alyson, Katrina, Tyson, Ryker, Peyton, Hayley, Ruby, Reagan, Truman, Asa, Paxton, Jemma, Anna, Evan, and Seth.

Alan Brown

browna picAlan V. Brown, 72, of Chester, passed away on Monday, April 30, 2018 at the Sanford Heart Hospital in Sioux Falls. His Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 5, 2018 in St. Joseph the Workman Catholic Church at Huntimer. Visitation with the family present from 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. on Friday, May 4, 2018 in the church. A rosary will follow. Interment is in the St. Joseph Cemetery.

Alan Vern Brown was born on February 22, 1946 at Madison, SD, the son of Vern and Ruth (Klassy) Brown. He grew up north of Madison and attended Downs Country School through the fifth grade before he moved with his family to a farm near Wentworth. Alan attended Chester Area School and graduated in 1964. After high school, he enlisted in the Army National Guard. He married Rita Klamm on June 1, 1968 at St. Joseph the Workman Catholic Church at Huntimer. They settled in the Chester area before moving to the farm in 1979. In 1992, the couple moved into their home in Chester.

Throughout his life, Alan worked for Lidel Construction, the Baltic Elevator, Gullickson and Dearduff Automotive, The Chester Farm Service, and Chester Hardware. In 1979, Alan started farming with his dad, Vern, until Vern passed away in 2010. Since then, Alan had farmed full-time while also doing custom farm work.

Alan was a member of St. Joseph the Workman Catholic Church in rural Colton, SD.

His passion in life was his wife of nearly 50 years, his daughters, and farming. He will be remembered for his love of a competitive card game, his big, welcoming smile, which helped him make friends with anyone, and his bias for John Deere Green. Alan was a true kid at heart, he adored his grandchildren and was often found playing hide-n-seek or schooling them in a good old game of thirty-one. He thoroughly enjoyed traveling with Rita to their grandchildren’s sporting events and activities, and rarely missed an event. Alan loved people, enjoyed talking about farming, and meeting his friends for breakfast and morning coffee; which was often followed by lunch.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Alan is survived by his wife, Rita of Chester; his daughters, MeLisa (James) Elijah of Lake Sinai and Shelly (Jon) Bacon of Lyons, NE; his four grandchildren, Haley Jo (Heath) Bacon, Aaron Elijah, Lexie Bacon, and Caleb Elijah; his brothers, Ivan (Sue) Brown of Yuma, AZ and Lynn (Charlotte) Brown of Sioux Falls; his sister, Jeannie Brown of Worthing, his extended family, and many, many friends.

Ahlers Selected for Emerging Leaders Program

DanAhlersStateRepSIOUX FALLS, S.D. – State Representative Dan Ahlers (D-Dell Rapids) has been selected to participate in the Emerging Leaders Program, an annual seminar sponsored by the State Legislative Leaders Foundation (SLLF) and the University of Virginia Darden School of Business.

Rep. Ahlers will join 44 other legislators from 42 other state who were selected to participate in the Program.

“It’s an honor to be selected to the Emerging Leaders Program,” said Rep. Ahlers. “I am humbled by the opportunity to be South Dakota’s representative at this prestigious event, where I can both learn about important national issues and trends in state government and share with others South Dakota’s values and vision of leadership.”

Legislators were selected to participate in the Program based upon criteria including the candidate’s long-term commitment to public service and keen interest in self-development, as well as a demonstration of the skills and aptitude to attain positions of greater political responsibility.

According to SLLF, the key objective of the program is to develop the leadership potential of emerging political leaders for the challenges of the 21st century. This will be accomplished through a highly interactive program that focuses on:

  • Analysis and feedback on elements of personal leadership style.
  • Awareness of the importance of values and ethics in governance and public service.
  • Gaining perspective on the importance of the role of the state legislature in contemporary American politics.
  • Recognition of the importance of legislators as consensus builders and facilitators of compromise.

Rep. Ahlers represents District 25 in the South Dakota Legislature, which includes parts of Minnehaha County.

Geurts Awarded DSU Champion Scholarship

MADISON, S.D., May 1, 2018 – Andrew Geurts of Dell Rapids, S.D. was recently awarded the DSU Champion Scholarship. The scholarship is awarded to high achieving students based on ACT scores and high school GPA.

Geurts will be attending Dakota State University in Madison, S.D. in the fall, majoring in cyber operations.

In 2017, DSU awarded over $1,284,764 in academic, athletic and other scholarships.

Quarrier Girls Golf Hosts Dell Rapids Invite

NewDRLogoThe Dell Rapids Quarrier girls golf team and Rocky Run Golf Course hosted the Dell Rapids Invite on Tuesday, May 1st.  Nineteen teams from across the state participated in the event.

Dell Rapids finished with a team score of 404 for 8th place.  Sioux Falls Christian won the team title with a score of 374.  Canton was second with 375.  West Central placed third with 376.  Parkston and Madison followed with scores of 380 and 384 respectively.  Kate Wynja of Sioux Falls Christian took the top spot individually with a round of 75.

Kaitlyn Greenhoff had the top score for Dell Rapids with a round of 92.  Olivia Downs finished the day with a round of 95.  Sami Schmidt had a 108, Sydney Emery had a 109, Jayme Schmidt had a 116, and Mallory Haak finished with a 127.

Dell Rapids will be at the West Central Invite at Central Valley Golf Course on Monday, May 7th.

Duane Westergaard

WestergaardDunaeObitDuane Dale Westergaard, 84, of Brandon passed away Wednesday, April 25, 2018. Memorial services were held at 11:00 AM Monday, April 30, 2018 at Faith United Church in Brandon. Burial will be in the Dell Rapids Cemetery.

Visitation with the family present was from 3:00 to 5:00 PM followed by a prayer service at 5:00 PM Sunday, April 29, 2018 at Minnehaha Funeral Home in Dell Rapids.

Duane was born November 9, 1933 to parents Soren and Marthea (Estergaard) Westergaard at Egan, SD. He was raised and received his education in Jasper, MN. He and his family attended Bethania Lutheran Church, rural Trent, SD. Duane attended SDSU, then served in the US Marines from January 12, 1954 to June 18, 1955. After the service, he attended the University of Minnesota studying agriculture and horticulture.

Duane met Shirley Wahlberg at church while they both were attending college in Minneapolis. They were married in 1970 at Bethany Lutheran Church in Minneapolis. The couple resided in Minneapolis, California, Sioux Falls and finally in Brandon.

Duane worked in the agriculture and horticulture industry. He was employed by Champion Products for many years where his superiors said he was an excellent employee with many talents in all facets of his job.

Duane’s children were very much loved by him. He was always active in their lives. Duane was always involved in the church throughout his life. He enjoyed working on cars and equipment as well as watching and attending sporting events. Duane was and is truly loved and will be missed as a husband, father, grandfather and brother in Christ.

Grateful for having shared his life are his wife, Shirley, Brandon; adopted children, Lisa Diaz, Sioux Falls, Chad Westergaard, Brandon, Sara Young, Sioux Falls and Mark Westergaard, Sioux Falls; nine grandchildren; three sisters and a brother.

Duane was preceded in death by his parents.

Two More Wins for Dell Rapids Baseball

DRvsFlan_Baseball_4-29-18Dell Rapids kept their perfect season going with two more wins on Sunday, April 29th at Rickeman Field in Dell Rapids.  Dell Rapids took two games from Flandreau in the Sunday double-header by scores of 14-2 and 17-0.

Flandreau picked up two runs in the top of the first inning in the first game off Dell Rapids starter Elijah Story.  The lead would be short lived as Dell Rapids scored two runs in the bottom of the second inning to tie the game 2-2 after two innings.  Dell Rapids then scored 11 times in the bottom of the third before adding one more in the bottom of the fourth.  Flandreau was held scoreless after the first inning and the game ended on the 10-run rule in the fifth inning.

Story pitched four of the five innings giving up two runs, both earned, on five hits while striking out six batters and walking one.  Logan Stone pitched the final inning striking out two batters.

Three Dell Rapids hitters had a multi-hit game.  Eddie Price collected three hits.  Matt Gillogly had two hits and two RBIs.  Jeffrey Schuch also had two hits and an RBI.  Carter Gullickson, Keegan Miller, Tate Kolbeck, and Story all had one hit in the game.  Gullickson and Kolbeck both had two RBIs each.

The Dell Rapids offense kept rolling in the second game.  They scored four times in the top of the first, five more times in the second inning, and eight runs in the third inning for their 17 runs.  Flandreau was held scoreless in the game and was only able to get just two hits before the game was ended on the 15-run rule in the third inning.

Price pitched the first two innings of the game.  He did not allow a hit and struck out five batters, but also walked five batters.  Stone pitched the final inning again giving up no runs on two hits.

Eleven different Dell Rapids hitters had a hit in the game.  Story had two hits and three RBIs.  Jay Holm, Thane Hilmoe, Gabe Skonseng, Matt Gillogly, Nick Palmer, Jake Steineke, Brandon Geraets, Price, Stone, and Schuch all had hits.  Hilmoe and Stone had two RBIs each.  Gillogly, Palmer, Miller, Steineke, Ty Wood, and Kolbeck all had an RBI.

Dell Rapids (8-0) will host Deubrook/Deuel on Thursday, May 3rd starting at 6:00 p.m.   The JV team will host Madison on Tuesday, May 1st.

 

Cardinal Track Teams Compete at Elkton

DRSM LogoThe Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal girls and boys track teams competed at the Running Elk track meet in Elkton on Saturday, April 28th.  Nine teams competed in the girls division, and ten teams competed in the boys division.

The Cardinal girls finished fourth with 89 points.  Colman-Egan won the girls title with 112 points.  Flandreau was second with 107 points, and Chester Area finished third with 91 points.

The Cardinal boys finished sixth with 48 points.  Colman-Egan also won the boys title with 151 points.  Elkton-Lake Benton was second with 115 points, and Chester Area finished third with 99 points.

St Mary will travel to Baltic on Tuesday, May 1st for their next meet.
