Cardinals Drop Exciting Match to Baltic

DRSM LogoThe Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals traveled to Baltic on Tuesday, September 25th to play the Bulldogs.  The Cardinals and Bulldogs got locked into a close and exciting match, and it was the Bulldogs that were victorious in the five-set match.  Baltic won by set scores of 17-25, 25-18, 25-20, 25-27, 16-14.

Cassie Mullaney and Veronica Beck played well at the net.  Mullaney had 15 kills, while Beck finished with 14 kills.  Maddie Schwebach added eight kills.  Ella Heinitz finished with 23 set assists, and Pagie Bunkers was right behind with 20 set assists.  Schwebach had three blocks on the night with Mullaney having two blocks.  Carly Maxwell tallied 19 digs.  Courtney Brown added 15 digs.  Bunkers and Macie Brown both finished with nine digs.  Bunkers also led the team with three service aces on the night.

St Mary (6-7) will host Oldham-Ramona/Rutland on Thursday, September 27th.

Quarriers Fall in Battle of Top Five Teams

DRvsMCM_VB_9-25-18In a battle of top five teams in Class A volleyball, the #5 McCook Central/Montrose Fighting Cougars defeated the #4 Dell Rapids Quarriers on Tuesday, September 25th at Dell Rapids High School.  The Fighting Cougars won in straight sets by scores 25-23, 25-21, 25-14.

The first set was a back-and-forth game with neither team really gaining much of an advantage.  Dell Rapids held a 22-21 lead late, but McCook Central/Montrose rallied to take a 24-22 lead.  After Dell Rapids pulled within a point at 24-23, the Fighting Cougars closed out the set for the victory.  Dell Rapids looked to be in control to take the second set after gaining an 18-13 advantage.  McCook Central/Montrose, however, rallied for a 12-3 run to steal the second set at 25-21.  The Fighting Cougars would ride the momentum to a 14-8 lead, but Dell Rapids responded with six straight points to tie the third set at 14-14.  But once again, McCook Central/Montrose went on a rally, this time for 11 straight points to win the match. Maria Jackson led the team with six kills.  Mackenzie Grisham and Jayda Knuppe both had three kills each.  Jackson and Knuppe both had two service aces.  Hannah Fletcher notched 13 more set assists and 11 digs.  Brooke Klein ended the night with 26 digs, and Grisham had 22 digs.  Jackson had three blocks at the net, while Kyra Graham had two blocks.

Dell Rapids (12-5) will travel to Lennox for a Dak-12 Conference match-up on Thursday, September 27th.

Edna Karloff

EdnaKarloffEdna M. Karloff, 107, of Millard, NE, passed away on Monday, September 24, 2018. Her funeral service will begin at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, September 28, 2018 in St. Paul Lutheran Church in Millard, NE. Interment will be in the Mount Auburn Cemetery, Millard, NE. Visitation with the family present will be from 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. at the Kahler Dolce Mortuary, Papillion, NE on Thursday, September 27, 2018. www.kahlerfh.com

Edna Marie Schomer was born on May 2, 1911 at Millard, NE, the daughter of Ben and Marie Schomer. She was raised on a farm southeast of Millard near 130th and Q Street. She attended grade school in Millard and graduated from South High School, Omaha in 1928. She had two older sisters, Pearl and Gladys.

She was married to the love of her life, Ed Karloff on March 2, 1932 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Millard. They farmed southwest of Millard on Highway 50 and Harrison Ave. in Sarpy County. Her husband, Ed died on January 10, 1974.

She worked on the farm with her husband during the depression and the dirty thirties. They worked hard to help save three family farms. She also worked at Boys Town for a few years. She is a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, Women of ELCA,  and was the wedding consultant at St. Paul’s for 15 years. She moved to Dell Rapids, South Dakota in May of 1997. While there, she built two new homes. She returned to Millard in October of 2004.

She loved having family functions and always wanted to play a game of cards. She was an excellent bridge, pinochle, gin rummy and poker player. She also enjoyed dancing.

She is survived by her son, Dennis (Jackie) of Millard; her daughter, Kay (Jim) Kahler of Dell Rapids; her ten grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren and 16 great-great-grandchildren; her daughter-in-law, Em of Millard and her sister-in-law, Ester Karloff of Millard.

She is preceded in death by her husband, her son, Dale, a daughter-in-law, Joan; her parents and two sisters.

We have been so blessed to have her in our lives for so many, many years.

Three Quarrier Golfers Qualify for State

NewDRLogoOn a cool, rainy, windy day in Groton, three Dell Rapids Quarrier golfers were able to punch their ticket to state at the Region 1A meet at Olive Grove Golf Course on Monday, September 24th.  Karsen Welbig, Zach McKee, and Brandon Kubly will all play in the South Dakota State A Golf Tournament.

To qualify for state, either the team had to finish as one of the top three teams in the regional tournament, or an individual had to place in the top 60% of the tournament field.  Dell Rapids placed 5th as a team with a team score of 381 out of the 11-team field.  The 60% mark of the Region 1A tournament was the top 29 golfers.

Welbig placed 19th with a round of 92.  McKee was 25th with a round of 94, and Kubly finished 27th with a round of 95.  Two other golfers also participated in the tournament for Dell Rapids.  Lucas Berg finished with a round of 100, and Charlie Holm finished the day with a round of 102.

The State A tournament will be held at Rocky Run Golf Course in Dell Rapids on Monday, October 1st and Tuesday, October 2nd.

Dell Rapids Softball has Two Close Games on Senior Day

The Dell Rapids varsity softball team hosted games against Pierre and Brookings on Sunday, September 23rd.  The two games were the final two home games of the season, and the seniors were recognized during the day.  This year’s seniors are Elly Schultz, Alexis Ehrmentrout, Ashlee Lambert, and Brooke Klein.

Dell Rapids’ first game of the day was against Pierre. Pierre took a close one from Dell Rapids by a score of 8-6.  Dell Rapids then played Brookings and led the entire game until a g0-ahead home run for Brookings in the bottom of the least inning stole a 13-12 victory.

Sam Price helped lead the team all day with three singles, a double, two runs scored, and two RBIs.  Price also shared pitching duties in both of the games during the day.  Lambert had two singles, three walks, and two runs scored in the two games.  Hannah Heiberger finished the day 3-3 with three singles, two RBIs, and two runs scored.  Ehrmentrout had two doubles in the game against Pierre with a run scored and three RBIs.

Dell Rapids (5-3) will travel to Tea on Sunday, September 30th to play games against Tea and Pipestone.

The Dell Rapids JV team also had two games on Sunday suffering losses to Pierre, 5-15, and to Tri-Valley, 8-16.  Alexyss Ladeaux had three doubles and a run scored.  Michaela Witte was 4-4 with four singles and three runs scored.  Rhaegyn Peterson had two doubles, a single, and a run scored.  These were the final regular season games for the JV team, and their season record ends at 1-7.  Dell Rapids JV will play in the JV state tournament at Sherman Park in Sioux Falls September 29th-30th.

Third Place Finish for Quarrier Cheer at Dakota Valley

The Dell Rapids Quarrier competitive cheer team returned for North Sioux City with a third place finish at the Dakota Valley Invite on Saturday, September 22nd.  A total of seven teams participated in the cheer competition of the event.

Dell Rapids finished with a team score of 190.0 points.  Dakota Valley won the event with a team score of 213.5 points.  Parkston was third with 209.5 points.  The other teams competing were Bon Homme, Deubrook, Gregory, and Wagner.

The Quarriers will take a few days off before their next event.  Dell Rapids will be at the Brandon Valley Invite on Tuesday, October 2nd for their next performance.

Dells Volleyball Finishes 2-3 at Sanford Tourney, Fletcher Hits Milestone

NewDRLogoThe Dell Rapids Quarriers played a total of five matches on Saturday, September 22nd at the Sanford Pentagon Invitational volleyball tournament in Sioux Falls.  The Quarriers had pool play matches against Mt Vernon/Plankinton, Central Lyons, IA, and Warner, and then they had bracket matches against Aberdeen Roncalli and Rapid City Central.

The Quarriers’ day started with pool play.  Their first match was a 2-1 win over Mt Vernon/Plankinton by scores of 21-25, 25-22, 25-23.  The Quarriers then played Central Lyons, IA and fell two sets to zero.  The final pool play match was against the #2 team in Class B, the Warner Monarchs.  Warner won by set scores of 25-10, 25-11.

With a 1-2 record in pool play, Dell Rapids was placed in the silver bracket for the evening matches.   The Quarriers won the opening match of bracket play over Aberdeen Roncalli by scores of 25-18, 25-17.  The win put Dell Rapids in the championship match of the silver bracket against the Rapid City Central Cobblers.  Dell Rapids won the first set 25-14, but the Cobblers won the next two sets 25-16, 25-21 to take the match.

During the tournament Hannah Fletcher reached the 1,000 career set assists milestone!

Dell Rapids (12-5) will host the McCook Central/Montrose Fighting Cougars in a big Class A volleyball match-up on Tuesday, September 25th.  The match can be seen on Big Sioux Media.

Quarriers Victorious on Homecoming

The Dell Rapids Quarries were victorious on homecoming as they defeated the Tri-Valley Mustangs 33-6 on Friday, September 21st at Dell Rapids High School.

Dell Rapids scored first after a Tri-Valley fumble.  With 4:55 to play in the first quarter, Logan Stone scored on a six-yard run.  The extra point was good by Hunter Garry, and Dell Rapids led 7-0.  Tri-Valley got within a point with 2:37 to play in the quarter after a 26-yard touchdown run by Mohamed Ibrahim.  The extra point was no good, and the score remained 7-6 in favor of Dell Rapids.

The Quarriers then scored four more touchdowns throughout the rest of the game.  With 1:42 to play in the first quarter, Eddie Price threw a 31-yard touchdown pass to Logan Stone.  The extra point was no good.  Dell Rapids got another score before halftime.  Price had a 20-yard touchdown run with 3:06 to play in the half, and the Quarriers led 19-6 at the break.  Nick Boever added a 12-yard touchdown run with 1:37 to play in the third quarter, and Alex Kringen had a one-yard touchdown run with 4:55 to play in the game for the final two scores.

Dell Rapids finished with 396 yards of offense while holding Tri-Valley to just 101 yards of offense.  The Quarriers had 185 passing yards, 211 rushing yards, and finished the game with 20 first downs.

Price was 9-11 passing for 185 yards and a touchdown.  Ellingson had eight of those catches for a total of 164 yards and a touchdown.  Tayte Gleason had a catch for 21 yards.  Price had 11 carries for 46 yards and a touchdown.  Gleason had seven carries for 38 yards.  Boever finished with eight carries for 33 yards and a touchdown.  Stone added four carries for 29 yards and a touchdown, and Kringen had five carries for 20 yards and a touchdown.  Coby Maeschen led the defense with six tackles.  Boever added five tackles.  Tristan Stahl, Brandon Geraets, and Kenyon Shellum all had four tackles each.

Dell Rapids (3-2) will host Tea Area on Friday, September 28th.  The game can be seen on Big Sioux Media.

Cardinals Fall to Castlewood at Homecoming

DRSM LogoThe Castlewood Warriors spoiled homecoming for the Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals on Friday, September 21st.  Castlewood defeated St Mary by a score of 63-14 at Rickeman Field in Dell Rapids.

The Cardinals scored first with 8:31 to go in the first quarter to take an early 6-0 lead, but the lead was short lived as Castlewood tied the game seven seconds later on a kick-off return for a touchdown.  The Warriors went ahead for good with 6:06 to play in the first quarter and continued to roll from there.  Castlewood led 32-14 at halftime.

The Cardinals finished with 238 yards of total offense, 121 rushing yards and 117 passing yards.  The Warriors had 382 yards of total offense, 213 rushing yards and 169 passing yards.

Connor Libis finished 5-14 passing for 117 yards with a touchdown and an interception.  Weston Geraets had three catches for 110 yards and a touchdown.  Payton Park had 10 carries for 44 yards.  Libis had 17 carries for 52 yards.  W. Geraets also had three carries for 28 yards.  Eli Longville led the defense with 10 tackles in the game.  W. Geraets had seven tackles.  Ethan Geraets and Libis both had six tackles, and Park finished with five tackles.

St Mary (2-3) will hit the road on Friday, September 28 when they travel to White to play the Deubrook Area Dolphins.  Due to cell phone signal issues in White, Big Sioux Media will be unable to stream the game.

Quarriers Win Fifth Straight Match for Second Time this Year

NewDRLogoThe #4 ranked Dell Rapids Quarriers have their second five-match winning streak of the season.  This comes after defeating the Flandreau Fliers in four sets on Thursday, September 20th at Dell Rapids High School by scores of 27-25, 19-25, 25-10, and 25-22.

Jayda Knuppe led the offensive attack with 12 kills on the night.  Mackenzie Grisham was right behind with 10 kills of her own.  Dezi Rus finished with five kills, and Hannah Fletcher had four kills.  Fletcher also finished the night with a match-high 29 set assists.  Brooke Klein anchored the Quarrier defense with 35 digs.  Fletcher added 12 digs.  Kenzie Garry led the up front defense of the Quarriers with two blocks.  Knuppe also had a block in the match.

Leaders for Flandreau included Marianna Pavlis with nine kills and five blocks, Jaycie Pulscher with 19 set assists and three aces, Kennedy Headrick with seven kills, and Melina Matthys with five kills and three blocks.

Dell Rapids (10-2) will play in the Sanford Pentagon Invitational Tournament on Saturday, September 22nd in Sioux Falls.  Dell Rapids will play Mt Vernon-Plankinton (9:00 a.m. – Court 8), Central Lyon (11:00 a.m. – Court 8), and Warner (2:00 p.m. – Court 8) in pool play before moving on to the bracket round later in the day.
