District 25 Candidate Forum – October 22nd, 2018

A candidate forum will be held for the South Dakota District 25 Legislative candidates on Monday, October 22nd, at 6:30 p.m. at the Dell Rapids Elementary School commons.

The main focus of the forum will be education issues, however, candidates will be allowed time to address non-education issues as well.  Questions to the candidates can be submitted to Dr. Summer Schultz in the District Office or during the forum.

Refreshments will be provided and candidates will spend time visiting after the forum.   Everyone is welcome.  For those that are unable to attend the forum, Big Sioux Media will be streaming the event.  The video for the webcast is at the bottom of this page.

Cardinals and Quarriers Run at Cross Country State

The 2018 South Dakota Class B and Class A State Cross Country meet was held at Yankton Trail Park on Saturday, October 20th.  The Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals entire boys varsity team participated in the event along with Addy Gilbert in the girls race.  Brayden Pulscher and Adisen Stadem were the participants for the Dell Rapids Quarriers.

The Cardinal boys team finished 14th at a steam with 109 points.  James Valley Christian won the boys Class B title with 44 points with Warner placing second also with 44 points.  Newell placed third with 45 points.

Jacob Vogel received medalist honors with a 19th place finish in a time of 17:39.96.  Connor Libis (64th) had a time of 18:51.44.  Ryan Eining (90th) had a time of 19:31.23.  Seth Roemen (91st) finished at 19:37.74.  Thomas Eining (104th) finished at 20:18.53.

Addy Gilbert had an 87th place finish in the girls Class B race with a time of 22:55.24.

Adisen Stadem finished 99th in the girls Class A with a time of 22:12.48.  Brayden Pulscher had a 92nd place finish in the boys race with a time of 19:10.53.

Deubrook Area, Ipswich, and Newell were the top three teams in girls Class B.  Custer, Hill City, and Chamberlain were the top three teams in girls Class A.   Custer, Vermillion, and St Thomas More were the top three teams in boys Class A.

Some Projects Nearing Completion in Dell Rapids

DellRapidsTowerA few of the projects that have been happening in Dell Rapids this summer and fall are nearing completion.

The Garfield Avenue Improvement project had its final pay request during the Dell Rapids City Council’s regular meeting on Monday, October 15th.  The contractor has just recently finished some grading and reseeding work, and the punch list items being completed.  The council approved the final pay request on this project.

The water tower repainting project is also nearing completion.  The painting of the tower has been completed inside and outside.  The “Dell Rapids” lettering has also been completed on the tower.  Testing on the paint, cleaning up the site, and then getting the tower refilled are the final steps to close out this project.

Another project that is also about complete is the Sioux River Red Rock Trail Scenic Overlook Extension project.  All of the concrete has been installed, and the back-filling and grading has been completed.  The seeding has not been completed at this time.  The plan is to dormant seed the areas in early November.  Some punch list items are also needing to be completed before the project is completely done.

The Rickeman Comfort Station project is also continuing to move forward.  The excavation and concrete work has been completed.  It was reported during the council meeting that the roofing materials are ready to be installed.  After the roof is done, the plumbing, HVAC, and electrical to be done on the building.  The expectation by the contractor is that the building will be finished by the end of November.

Quarriers 3rd, Cardinals 6th at State Cheer

The Dell Rapids Quarrier and Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal competitive cheer teams gave their final performances of the 2018 season at the 2018 South Dakota Class A Competitive Cheer Competition on Friday, October 19th at Brandon Valley High School.  A total of 18 teams competed at this year’s state event.

The Quarriers took home 3rd place with a total of 240.0 points.  The Cardinals placed 6th in the state with a total of 225.0 points.  Sioux Valley claimed the Class A title with 290.5 points.  Dakota Valley was second with 246.0 points.  Deubrook Area was fourth with 227.0 points, and Platte-Geddes was fifth with 226.5 points.

Madison Spoils Senior Night for Quarriers

NewDRLogoThe Madison Bulldogs spoiled senior night for the Dell Rapids Quarrier football team with a 28-7 win on Thursday, October 18th at Dell Rapids High School.  It was the final regular season for both teams in the 2018 season.

Both teams had chances to score in the first quarter, but both defenses held tough.  The Bulldogs finally broke through late in the first quarter when Thomas Gors had a four-yard touchdown run.  The extra point was good, and Madison led 7-0 after the first quarter.  Madison again scored midway through the second quarter on a 10-yard pass from Tyler Tappe to Caileb Reilly to make it 14-0.  Dell Rapids had a chance to put a score on the board in the final seconds of the half, but an Eddie Price pass was tipped and intercepted at the goal line.  Madison led 14-0 at halftime.

Neither team was able to get the offense going much in the third quarter.  Both teams were held scoreless, and Madison continued to lead 14-0 heading into the final quarter.  Nic Comes scored early in the fourth quarter on a 53-yard pass from Tappe to go ahead 21-0.   Avery Williams had a two-yard run with around 3:30 to go in the game to put the Bulldogs ahead 28-0.  Price connected with Logan Ellingson on an 84-yard pass with just over 2:00 to go for the lone Dell Rapids touchdown.

Dell Rapids finished with a total 286 yards of offense, 245 passing yards and just 41 rushing yards.  Madison, meanwhile, had 375 yards of total offense, 217 passing yards and 158 rushing yards.

Price finished 15-30 passing for 245 yards, a touchdown, but threw three interceptions.  Ellingson had nine catches for 170 yards and a touchdown.  Logan Stone had a catch for 36 yards.  Tatye Gleason had five carries for 19 yards.  Price finished with nine carries for nine yards. Coby Maeschen led the defense with 16 tackles.  Eddie Price finished with 10 tackles.  Drew VanRegenmorter had eight tackles with a sack.

The 2018 Dell Rapids Quarrier football team seniors are Nick Boever, Tate Kolbeck, Tayte Gleason, Eddie Price, Hunter Garry, Max Lamer, Alex Kringen, Jacob Rechtenbaugh, Kenyon Shellum, and Logan Heim.

Dell Rapids (5-4) still qualified for the 11A playoffs as the #7 seed.  Dell Rapids will travel to Madison to play the Bulldogs again in the quarterfinals on Thursday, October 25th.  The game can be seen on Big Sioux Media.

Castlewood Ends Cardinal Season in 9B Playoffs

DRSM LogoThe 2018 football season came to an end for the Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals in the opening round of the South Dakota 9B Playoffs on Thursday, October 25th in Castlewood.  The Castlewood Warriors beat the Cardinals 36-12 to advance to the quarterfinal round.

The first quarter was a defensive battle as neither team was able to put a score on the board.  The Warriors got on the scoreboard in the second quarter with 10:22 to play on a seven-yard touchdown run by Noah Wiersma to go ahead 6-0.  St Mary tied the game with 1:52 remaining in the half on a two-yard run by Connor Libis.  Castlewood took the lead again with just seconds remaining on a one-yard touchdown run by Kaden Eng and two-point conversion.  The Warriors led 14-6 at halftime.

Castlewood scored first in the third quarter on a five-yard run by Kevin Munoz with 7:18 to play.  The two-point conversion was good extending the lead to 22-6.  St Mary cut the lead after a 26-yard touchdown pass from Libis to Weston Geraets at 22-12.  That’s where the score remained heading into the fourth quarter.  Wiersma scored with 7:38 to play in the game after a Castlewood interception.  The score pushed the lead to 28-12.   The Warriors added one more score on another Wiersma touchdown with 2:20 to play.

W. Geraets finished with 12 carries for 81 yards.  Ethan Geraets had 13 carries for 77 yards, and Libis finished with five carries for 20 yards and a touchdown.  Libis was also 3-7 passing for 70 yards, a touchdown and two interceptions.  W. Geraets had two catches for 63 yards and a touchdown.  Eli Longville led the team in tackles with 11 in the game.  W. Geraets had 10 tackles.  Ryan Eining finished with 7.5 tackles.  Libis also had 6.5 tackles and a defensive interception.

St Mary finished their season with a 3-6 overall record.

Cardinals Beat Lake Preston in Second Straight Match

DRSM LogoPlaying the Lake Preston Divers for the second match in a row, the Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals earned their second win over the Divers on Tuesday, October 16th in Lake Preston.  St Mary and Lake Preston met at the Dakota Valley Conference Tournament on Saturday, October 13th with the Cardinals getting a 2-0 win.  St Mary followed that match win with a straight set win on Monday by scores of 25-16, 25-16, 25-15.

Veronica Beck finished with 10 kills and four ace serves for the Cardinals.  Maddie Schwebach had eight kills, and Cassie Mullaney had five kills.  Ella Heinitz tallied 20 set assists, nine digs, and two ace serves.  Paige Bunkers finished with four set assists and an ace.  Macie Brown had a team-high 13 digs, and Carly Maxwell finished with 12 digs.

St Mary (9-15) will host Colman-Egan on Monday, October 22nd.  It will be the final regular season match and senior night for the Cardinals.  The match can be seen on Big Sioux Media.

Madison Edges Quarriers in Five Sets

NewDRLogoIn a Dak-12 match-up, the Madison Bulldogs defeated the Dell Rapids Quarriers in a five-set match on Tuesday, October 16th in Madison.  The set scores in the Madison win were 25-18, 16-25, 25-14, 21-25, 15-7.

Mackenzie Grisham and Jayda Knuppe led the offensive attack for Dell Rapids.  Grisham had 13 kills, while Knuppe finished with eight.  Knuppe and Brooke Klein both had an ace serve in the match.  Klein also led the back-row defense with 28 digs.  Hannah Fletcher finished the night with 17 digs and 39 set assists.  Maria Jackson finished with five blocks at the net.

The Quarriers (18-8) will travel to Beresford on Monday, October 22nd.

First Place for Cardinal Cheer Team in Lake Preston

In their final regular season performance of the 2018 season, the Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals took first place at the Lake Preston Invite on Monday, October 15th at Lake Preston High School.  The Cardinals finished first out of the five teams competing.

The Cardinals finished with a total of 156.25 points.  Faulkton placed second with 146.5 points.  Arlington-Lake Preston was third with 140 points.  Redfield-Doland finished fourth, and Deubrook Area placed fifth.

St Mary will now move on to the 2018 South Dakota Class A State Cheer Competition at Brandon Valley High School in Brandon on Friday, October 19th.

Quarrier Cheer Takes First at Platte-Geddes Invite

The Dell Rapids Quarrier competitive cheer team placed first in their final performance before the state competition on Saturday, October 13th.  Dell Rapids was one of 11 teams that participated in the Platte-Geddes Invite in Platte.  The teams were Dell Rapids, Platte-Geddes, Winner, Gregory, Lyman, Redfield-Doland, Wagner, Rapid City Stevens, Dakota Valley, Bon Homme, and Parkston.

The Quarriers finished with a total of 173.0 points.  Rapid City Stevens was second with 159.5 points.  Dakota Valley was third with 150.5 points.  Platte-Geddes was fourth with 149.5 points, and Redfield-Doland was fifth with 149.0 points.

Dell Rapids will now compete at the 2018 South Dakota Class A Competitive Cheer competition on Friday, October 19th at Brandon Valley High School in Brandon.  The performance will be aired on South Dakota Public TV.  The Quarriers are scheduled to perform at 7:03 p.m. on Friday.
