New City Council Called at Regular Meeting

DellRapidsTowerEven though no election was needed to fill the four open seats on the Dell Rapids City Council, a new council had to be called to order on Monday, May 6th. All the members of each ward are the same and the council members are Gary Haak, Bill Schmidt, Mark Crisp, Barry Berg, Mike Geraets, Chad Ronshaugen, James Borchert, Bob Mier, and Mayor Tom Earley.  Some of the council positions have changed from last year.

Councilman Crisp was elected the President once again.  Councilman Ronshaugen will be the new Vice President.  Committee appointments are as follows:

  • Finance and Public Works Committee:  Crisp, Schmidt, Haak
  • Policy and Procedure Committee:  Borchert, Ronshaugen, Berg
  • Surplus Property Appraisal Committee:  Entire Council
  • Minnehaha County Economic Development Association:  Ronshaugen
  • Dell Rapids Economic Development Corporation:   Geraets

Dells Baseball Earns Region Win

DellsBaseballLogo_DRBAThe Dell Rapids High School Club baseball team earned a region playoff win over Garretson on Sunday, May 12th in Baltic.  Dell Rapids won by a score of 6-2.

Both teams were held scoreless in the first two innings.  Dell Rapids broke the tie in the bottom of the third inning.  Ty Wood started the inning with a lead-off single to short right field.  Keegan Miller followed with a two-run homerun to right field for the early lead.

Dell Rapids added two more runs in the bottom of the inning.  Miller, Jay Holm, and Eddie Price all drew walks to load the bases with no outs.  Jake Rechtenbaugh hit a line drive that fell scoring Miller.  Holm was thrown out at the plate trying to score, and then courtesy Kaeden Eastman was thrown out at second on the same play.  Austin Henry followed with a single.  Logan Stone entered the game as a courtesy runner for Rechtenbaugh, and  Jake Steineke hit a line drive to right field to score Stone for a 4-0 lead.

Dell Rapids then added two more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning with two outs.  Holm, Price, and Rechtenbaugh strung together three straight singles to score two runs.  Garretson scored two runs in the top of the seventh.  Price got the first two batters out of the inning, but gave up a walk and had to be replaced due to pitch limit being reached.  Austin Henry replaced Price on the mound.  Garretson got three straight hits before Henry finished the game on a strikeout for the win.

Price and Rechtenbaugh both had three hits each in the game offensively.  Rechtenbaugh, Henry, and Brandon Geraets had two hits each.  Miller, Holm, Steineke, and Wood all had a hit.  Miller and Rechtenbaugh had two RBIs each, and Price and Steineke also each had an RBI.  Price pitched 6 2/3 innings allowing one run on no hits with five walks and 12 strikeouts.  Henry pitched the final 1/3 of an inning giving up a run on three hits with a strikeout.

St Mary Boys 2nd, Girls 4th at DVC Track Meet

DRSM LogoThe Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal track team traveled to De Smet for the 2019 Dakota Valley Conference meet on Thursday, May 9th.

The boys team finished second with a score of 103 points.  Deubrook Area finished first with 114 points.  De Smet tied St Mary for second with 103 points as well.  The girls team had a fourth-place finish with 72 points.  Deubrook Area also won the girls title with 185 points.  Colman-Egan was second with 133.5 points, and Estelline/Hendricks was third with 107.5 points.

Ella Heinitz and Courtney Brown had state-qualifying runs in the 100m dash.  Heinitz placed first with a time of :12.41, and Brown was second with a time of :12.64.  Heinitz also had a state-qualifying run in the 200m dash with a second place finish of :26.78 as well as a state-qualifying, first-place finish in the 400m dash with a time of 1:00.71.  Maddie Schwebach had a state-qualifying, first-place throw in the discus of 112’2″.  Weston Geraets had a state-qualifying, first-place jump in the triple jump of 41’7″.

The Cardinals will travel to Elkton for the Region 4B Meet on Thursday, May 16th.

Laura Croon

Croon PicLaura M. Croon, 98, of Dell Rapids, passed away on Monday, May 6, 2019 at the Dells Nursing and Rehab Center. Her funeral service is at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 9, 2019 in the Lutheran  Church of Dell Rapids. Internment is in the Colman Cemetery. Visitation is at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, May 8, 2019 at Kahler Funeral Home with the family present from 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. www.kahlerfh.com.

Laura was born on September 3, 1920 at home in Moody County. She grew up on a farm northwest of Colman and attended Allen School. When she was 11 she moved into Colman to finish school and graduated from Colman High School in 1938. After high school she kept books for the city of Colman. She married Kenneth Croon on February 24, 1940 in Chester, SD. The couple made their home on a farm southeast of Colman. They moved into Colman in 1977. Laura worked as the lunchroom manager for the Colman schools for 33 years, making over 3 million dinner rolls for the school lunches. She retired in 1991. She and Ken moved to Dell Rapids in 2002. Ken passed away on November 4, 2008. Laura remained independent and lived on her own until this past year when her daughter moved in to help care for her.

She was a 50+ year member of the Colman Lutheran Church and a member of the Lutheran Church of Dell Rapids. She was an avid crossword player. Laura was preceded in death by her husband, Ken; her parents, Fred and Anna (Kroger) Thiele; her siblings, Frank, Leo, Lloyd, Mahlon Thiele and Gladys Heinricy.

She is survived by her daughter, Ardis Croon of Dell Rapids; her son, Gary (Linda) Croon of Dell Rapids; her granddaughters, Cheri Croon, Amy (Jim) Stegge and Nicole (Mike) Peyton; her great-grandchildren, Dayne, Ty and Kyndall Peyton; her sister, Wilma Beck and sisters-in-law, Lila Thiele, Jeanine Thiele, Helen Thiele, Rosie Croon, Jean Pedersen and her many nieces and nephews.

Quarrier Track Hosts St Mary and Others at Quarrier Invite

The Dell Rapids Quarrier track team hosted the Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal track team and nine others at the Quarrier Invite on Monday, May 6th.  Despite the cool temperatures and light rain showers, the track meet was able to be fully completed.

The Quarrier girls team finished third with a total of 86 points, and the Cardinals girls team finished sixth with 59 points.  Colman-Egan won the girls team title with 90 points, and Canton was second with 88 points.

The Quarrier boys finished second in team points with 91.  The Cardinal boys finished eighth with 36 points.  Sioux Falls Christian was first with 120 points, and Baltic placed third with 53 points.

Quarrier Girls Golf Has Medalist at WC Invite

NewDRLogoThe Dell Rapids Quarrier girls golf team had a medalist at the West Central Invite held at Central Valley Golf Course in Hartford on Monday, May 6th.

Olivia Downs had a 5th place finish with a round of 90 on the day.  Abby Greenhoff finished with a round 0f 108, and Jayme Schmidt finished with a round of 114, both season lows for the two golfers.

Dell Rapids only took three golfers to the invite, so no team score was entered for the Quarriers.  West Central won the team title with a score of 373, and Sioux Falls Christian placed second with a team score of 377.

The Quarriers will head to Madison for the Madison Invite on Thursday, May 9th.

Dell Rapids Baseball 2-1 in Weekend Games

DellsBaseballLogo_DRBAThe Dell Rapids high school baseball team played three games in two days on Saturday, May 4th and Sunday May 5th. They played one game in Tea on Saturday after the game was postponed from Friday. Dell Rapids then played Garretson and Lennox in Garretson on Sunday.

Dell Rapids scored early and often in an 11-1 win over Tea on Saturday evening. Dell Rapids opened the game with two runs in the top of the first, and then added two more in the third and fourth innings for a 6-0 lead. They scored three more times in the top of the fifth inning, and then added a single run in the sixth and seventh innings for the win. Keegan Miller, Jay Holm, and Charlie Holm all had two hits each. Jake Rechtenbaugh, Austin Henry, Jake Steineke, and Brandon Geraets also all had a hit. J. Holm had two RBI in the game, and Henry, Steineke, and Geraets each had an RBI. Steineke pitched four shutout innings giving up just one hit and one walk while striking out five batters. Logan Stone pitched three innings giving up an unearned run on two hits with two walks and three strikeouts.

Dell Rapids earned a walk-off win against Garretson on Sunday afternoon by a score of 4-3. Dell Rapids scored two times in the bottom of the third on a couple of wild pitches and an error for an early 2-0. Garretson got a run back in the top of the fourth off of an error, but Dell Rapids answered with an RBI single by J. Holm in the bottom of the inning for a 3-1 lead. Garretson tied the game in the top of the sixth inning with runs on an error and a steal of home. The game was tied 3-3 heading into the bottom of the seventh inning. Henry reached on a walk, and Steineke reached on an error. Henry stole third base and then scored the winning run on an error for the 4-3 win. Eddie Price had three hits in the game. Steineke added two hits, and Miller, J. Holm, and Rechtenbaugh each had a hit. J. Holm had the only RBI in the game. Rechtenbaugh pitched 5 1/3 innings giving up two runs, one earned, on four hits with a walk and four strikeouts. Henry took the win pitching the final 1 2/3 innings giving up a run, which was unearned, on two hits with two walks and a strikeout.

Dell Rapids closed out the three games against Lennox in Garretson. Lennox handed Dell Rapids their third loss of the season with an 8-2 win. Dell Rapids scored the first two runs of the game in the top of the first on an RBI bunt single by J. Holm. J. Holm then scored later in the inning on a wild pitch. Lennox, however, answered with three runs in the bottom of the first and then went on to score five more unanswered runs in the game for the win. Miller, J. Holm, Henry, Steineke, and Kaeden Eastman all had a hit. J. Holm had another RBI. Price took the loss pitching 3 1/3 innings giving up seven runs, four earned, on five hits with five walks and seven strikeouts. Henry pitched 1 2/3 innings giving up an unearned run on one hit with a walk and a strikeout. Ty Wood also pitched an inning giving up two walks and adding two strikeouts.

Dell Rapids (8-3) will have a game against Sioux Valley in Volga on Wednesday, May 8th. The varsity game will start at 5:30 p.m. with the JV game to follow.

St Mary Track Records Fall over Weekend

DRSM LogoThe Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal track team had a good weekend of meets on Friday, May 3rd and Saturday, May 4th at the O’Gorman Invite and Howard Wood Relays.  Three girl relay records were broken over the weekend!

Storms forced the cancellation of the O’Gorman Invite midway through the event on Friday, but the Cardinals were able to still get three 1st place finishes, a second place finish, a third place finish, a fourth place finish, and two eighth place finishes.

Saturday at the Howard Wood Relays was a great day for the relay team of Courtney Brown, Ella Griffin, Sydney Klein, and Ella Heintiz.  The team took 4th place in the 4x100m relay with a school record time of :53.08.  They also had an 8th place finish in the Sprint Medley relay with a state-qualifying and school record time of 4:32.68.  They also broke a third school record by placing 8th in the 4x200m relay with a time of 1:52.67.

St Mary will be at the Dells Invite on Monday, May 6th.

Quarrier Girls Golf Hosts Dells Invite

NewDRLogoAfter having to postpone the event, the Dell Rapids Quarrier girls golf team was able to host their Dells Invite at Rocky Run Golf Course on Friday, May 3rd.

Dell Rapids finished with a team score of 449, which was good enough for fourth place as a team.  Sioux Falls Christian finished in the top spot with a team score of 386.  Canton was second with a 408, and Vermillion placed third with a score of 424.

The Quarriers had three golfers finish in the top 15 individually.  Olivia Downs finished 11th with a round of 109.  Sydney Emery had a 13th place finish with a 112, and Mallory Haak finished 14th with a round of 113.  Sam Schmidt had a score of 115, and Abby Greenhoff finished with a 122.  Madison Fossum of Canton took the top spot individually with a round of 89, beating out Lauren Tims of Sioux Falls Christian, who also had a round of 89, in a tie-breaker.

Dell Rapids will be at the West Central Invite on Monday, May 6th.
