Alcester-Hudson Can’t Climb out of Early Hole

The Alcester-Hudson fell behind 30-8 late in the second quarter against the Viborg-Hurley Cougars on Friday, September 13th.  They worked themselves to within four points later in the game, but the Cougars held for a 48-38 win.

The Cougars scored two touchdowns late in the first quarter.  One of the touchdowns was a 62-yard touchdown pass and the other was on a 49-yard run with 1:14 to go for a 14-0 lead.  Tommy Walth connected with Ethan Bovill to put the Cubs on the board with 10:46 to play in the second quarter on a 37-yard touchdown pass.  A made two-point conversion cut the lead to 14-8.

Viborg-Hurley scored the next two touchdowns.  With 8:20 to go in the half, the Cougars scored on a one-yard run.  They added a 10-yard touchdown run with 4:33 to play in the half to make the score 30-8.  Walth and Bovill connected again on an 18-yard pass with a minute left.  The Cubs made the two-point conversion to make the score 30-16 going into halftime.

Alcester-Hudson scored the first touchdown of the second half.  Walth had a two-yard run with 8:32 to go.  The Cubs made the two-point conversion to cut the lead to 30-24.  The Cougars increased their lead to 36-24 with 3:26 to play in the quarter on a 28-yard pass.  Walth had his third passing touchdown with :06 to go in the quarter after connecting with Evan Brown from 43 yards away.  Another two-point conversion put the Cubs within four points, 36-32.

Viborg-Hurley extended their lead to 10 points, 42-32, with 9:44 on a two-yard run.  Brown pulled the Cubs within four points again, 42-38, with 6:40 to go in the game on a four-yard run.  Alcester-Hudson looked to grab momentum after an interception by Darin Dykstra with 3:55 to go in the game.  The Cubs were unable to capitalize on the turnover.  Viborg-Hurley made it a two-score game, 48-38, with 1:40 remaining on a 72-yard touchdown run.
