Cubs Girls Basketball Team Drops First Game of Season

The Alcester-Hudson Cubs girls basketball team took to the road to open the 2023-2024 season.  The Cubs traveled to Colman to play the Colman-Egan Hawks.  The Hawks defeated the Cubs 49-39.

Colman-Egan built a 13-5 lead by the end of the first quarter.  The Cubs cut the lead to four points, 17-13, with 3:30 to play in the first half.  The Hawks, however, responded with a 16-2 run the rest of the quarter for a 33-15 halftime lead.  Alcester-Hudson was only able to cut the lead down by one point, 41-24, by the end of the third quarter.  The Cubs did make a run in the fourth quarter.  They were able to pull within six points, 45-39, with just under a minute to play, but Colman-Egan secured the victory with made free throws in the final minute.

Alcester-Hudson shot 33% (12-36) overall in the game, 1-4 on three-point attempts, and 58% (14-24) from the free-throw line.  Colman-Egan shot 25% (13-53) overall, 23% (7-31) from three-point area, and 67% (16-24) from the free-throw line.  The big stat of the night was turnovers.  The Hawks defense forced 29 Cub turnovers, 16 of those on steals.

Elly Doering had 15 points and 14 rebounds.  Jenna Manning finished with 11 points and five rebounds.  Sarah Ebert added nine points and seven rebounds.
