Cubs Get First Win of Season in Five Sets

The Alcester-Hudson Cubs earned their first win of the volleyball season against the Avon Pirates on Thursday, September 8th.  After back-to-back five-set losses, the Cubs were victorious in the five-set match by scores of 25-20, 25-27, 25-19, 24-26, and 15-5.

Most of the match was played close.  The opening set went back-and-forth early, but the Cubs were able to get some separation at 13-6.  The Pirates slowly fought their way back to a 19-19 tie, but Alcester-Hudson ended the set on a 6-1 run for a 25-20 win.  The second set was also a close battle.  Avon got themselves in front 13-9 and extended that lead to 20-15.  The Cubs rallied to tie the score 23-23.  The score was again tied 25-25, but Avon scored two in a row for a 27-25 win.

Alcester-Hudson took control of the third set early.  After a 5-5 tie, the Cubs went on a 6-1 run for an 11-6 lead.  That momentum carried throughout the rest of the third set.  The Cubs led 16-8 and eventually won the set 25-19.  The entire fourth set was played within just a couple of points.  The two teams were tied 12-12.  Avon then went on a little 4-1 run for a 16-13 lead.  The Cubs tied the score 17-17 and then again at 21-21.  The Pirates scored the next three (24-21) only to have the Cubs score three in a row to tie the score 24-24.  Avon, however, scored the final two points for a 26-24 win to force the fifth set.

The final set was close early, 3-3.  That’s when the Cubs went on a big really.  They went on a 7-1 run for a 10-4 lead, and this time, Alcester-Hudson held for the 15-5 victory.

Emma Moller finished with 13 kills and 10 digs.  Alexis Gray added 11 kills, eight digs, and three ace serves.  Elly Doering finished with with nine kills, seven digs, and three blocks.  Carley Patrick had six kills and two digs.  Hannah Ahart had 20 digs and a team-high seven ace serves.  Ella Serck finished with 35 set assists and 10 digs.  Jenna Manning had eight digs, and Devin Hongslo added six digs and four ace serves.
