West Central Boys Win Battle of Top Teams

The #2 West Central Trojans traveled to Sioux Falls to play the #1 Sioux Falls Christian Chargers in a battle of the top two teams in Class A boys basketball on Tuesday, January 6th.  The Trojans took a first quarter lead and held that throughout the game for a 64-55 victory to remain undefeated on the year.

West Central built a five-point lead, 17-12, by the end of the first quarter.  They were able to push that lead to 10 points, 27-17, with 4:45 to go in the second quarter.  The Trojans kept that 10-point lead at halftime, 34-24.  West Central was able to keep the Chargers at bay in the third quarter and led 46-39 going into the fourth quarter.

Sioux Falls Christian scored the first five points of the fourth quarter to cut the lead to 46-44 with 6:00 to play.  The Trojans were able to stop the run and extend their lead to the five-to-six point range.  The Chargers again got within two points, 55-53, with 2:00 left on the clock.  West Central would hold the Chargers to just two more points in the game while making their free throws in the closing minute to take the win.

The Trojans finished the game shooting 50% (23-46) overall, 36% (5-14) from three-point area, and 65% (13-20) from the free-throw line.  Sioux Falls Christian was 42% (21-50) shooting overall, 35% (8-23) from three-point area, and 5-10 from the free-throw line.

Connor Mebius led the team in scoring with 23 points and also had seven rebounds and five assists.  Hayden Heier had 14 points and five rebounds.  Will Kuhl added 11 points and four rebounds.
