Wood Ducks Fall Short of State Tournament

The Hartford/Humboldt Wood Ducks had two chances to win one last game at the District 4B Tournament in Madison to punch their ticket to the state tournament, but they fell short in both of those games on Friday, August 1st and Saturday, August 2nd.

Canova 13, Wood Ducks 7

The Canova Gang rallied late in the game to pull away from the Wood Ducks to qualify for the state tournament.  The Wood Ducks scored a run in the top of the first inning.  Canova responded with four in the bottom of the inning and then one more in the second for a 5-1 lead.  The Wood Ducks picked up two runs in the top of the third.  They would tie the game, 5-5, with two more runs in the top of the fifth.  Canova regained the lead, 7-5, with two runs in the bottom of the fifth.  The Wood Ducks again tied the game, 7-7, with two runs in the top of the seventh.  Canova, however, took the lead back for good with six runs in the bottom of the seventh.

Keaton Vessells had three hits, including a double and home run, and three RBIs.  Brayden Odegaard also had three hits, one a double.  Nathan Adrain and Rayce Whiting each had a single with an RBI.  Hayden Whiting, Caden Alfson, Braden Herr, and Camden McDonald all had one hit each.

Flandreau Blue Teal 5, Wood Ducks 3

A three-run bottom of the fourth proved to be the difference in the game as the Blue Teal qualified for state with a win over the Wood Ducks on the final day of the district tournament.  Each team picked up a run in the second inning.  The Wood Ducks scored two times in the top of the fourth for a 3-1 lead.  Flandreau rallied for three runs in the bottom of the inning to go in front 4-3.  The Blue Teal added an insurance run in the bottom of the seventh.

R. Whiting had two hits with an RBI.  Vessells had a home run and an RBI.  McDonald had a double.  Alfson, Odegaard, and Adrian all had one hit each.
