The Humboldt Gamecocks have split their first two games of the District 4B Tournament in Madison. The #6 seed lost their opening game to Madison on Saturday, July 27th but rebounded for a win over Salem on Sunday, July 27th.
Madison 10, Gamecocks 5
Madison rallied late in the game to get the opening-round win over Humboldt. Each team scored two runs in the first inning. Madison added two more in the second and another in the third for a 5-2 lead. The Gamecocks scored two times in the top of the sixth to pull within one, 5-4. They tied the game in the top of the eighth inning, 5-5. Madison, however, scored five times in the bottom of the eighth to pull away for the win.
Tyler Migliante had a single and two RBIs. Jonah Rechtenbaugh and Adam Hentges had a single and an RBI each. Cam Quigley and Broc Haldeman each had one hit. Cole Barthel pitched four innings and allowed five runs, four earned, on five hits and a walk with two strikeouts. Noah Vettrus pitched four innings and allowed five runs, but all unearned, on five hits and two walks with three strikeouts.
Gamecocks 9, Salem 3
Humboldt was able to avoid elimination with a 9-3 win over Salem. The Gamecocks scored two in the bottom of the first and two more in the second for an early 4-0 lead. Salem cut the lead in half, 4-2, with two runs in the top of the third. The Gamecocks scored the next five runs. They got three in the fifth, one in the sixth, and added one more in the bottom of the eighth. Salem was only able to get just one more run in the top of the ninth.
Devon Garry had three hits, including a double and home run, and had three RBIs. Rechtenbaugh also had three hits, one of them a double. Quigley finished with two hits and two RBIs. Joe Hanisch and Haldeman had two hits each. Ryan Holgate had a home run and three RBIs. Blake Svoboda had a hit and an RBI. Kyle Konechne and Chad Morrison each had a hit. Svoboda pitched six innings and allowed two earned runs on two hits and six walks with 10 strikeouts.
