West Central Softball Wins Sixth Straight State Title

The West Central high school club softball team won their sixth straight Class B state title on Sunday, October 3rd.  The Trojans won all five of their games without allowing a single run all tournament long.

West Central  8, Dakota Valley  0

The first game was on Saturday, October 2nd.  West Central earned an 8-0 win over Dakota Valley.  The Trojans scored two runs in the first, four in the third, and two more in the fourth for the win.  Dakota Valley was held to just two hits.  Caitlyn Hoff had two home runs and four RBIs in the game.  Emillee Stofferahn had two hits and two RBIs.  Izzi Parsons also had two hits.  Jocelyn Nilson finished with a double.  McKenna Sichmeller had a hit and two RBIs, and Sammie Mallinger and Addy Kramer both had a single.  Mallinger pitched five innings allowing two hits while striking out 14 batters.

West Central 11, Dell Rapids 0

The second game on Saturday was an 11-0 win over Dell Rapids.  West Central scored four times in the top of the first and four more in the top of the third.  They put the game away with a five-run sixth inning.  The Trojans belted 11 hits and took advantage of seven Dell Rapids errors.  Stofferahn had three hits, including two doubles, and an RBI.  Hanna Raeethz had two hits and four RBIs.  Grace Harden and Sichmeller both had two hits.  Hoff had a hit and an RBI, and Nilson had a hit.  Mallinger pitched all six innings allowing just four hits with 13 strikeouts.

West Central 8, Sturgis 0

The final game on Saturday was against Sturgis.  West Central scored again in the first inning, scoring two times.  They added two more in the second for a 4-0 lead.  The Trojans then had a two-run fifth inning and two-run sixth inning for an 8-0 win.  Sturgis had just one hit in the game.  Hoff had two hits, including a home run, and four RBIs.  Harden had two hits, one a double.  Stofferahn had a double and two RBIs.  Kramer finished with a hit and two RBIs, and Caitlyn Maa had a single.  Mallinger pitched six more innings allowing just one hit with 17 more strikeouts.

West Central 7, Tea 0

West Central used a six-run first inning to defeat Tea 7-0 in the semifinals on Sunday, October 3rd.  The final run came in the sixth inning for West Central.  Mallinger again only allowed one hit while striking out 13 batters.  Mallinger also had three hits in the game, including a home run, and two RBIs.  Hoff had two hits and an RBI.  Harden and Parsons both had two singles each.  Nilson had a hit and RBI.  Kramer finished with a single, and Sichmeller had an RBI.

West Central 10, Dell Rapids 0

The Trojans met Dell Rapids again in the championship game.  Another six-run first inning set the tone for West Central.  They added three more in the second and another run in the third as the game ended after four innings.  Mallinger had three hits, two of those doubles, and an RBI.  Stofferahn had a double and home run with three RBIs.  Nilson had two doubles  and two RBIs.  Maa added two hits, including a home run, and two RBIs.  Kramer also had a home run and two RBIs.  Harden had  a double, and Hoff had a single.  Mallinger won her fifth game on the mound allowing only two hits while striking out nine.

West Central Softball Wins Two in Final Regular Season Games

The West Central softball team won their final two regular season games and only allowed one run in those games on Sunday, September 26th in Dell Rapids.

West Central had a 12-0 shutout in their first game against Dakota Valley.  After a scoreless first inning, West Central scored five runs in the top of second inning, two more in the third, and another five in the fourth inning.  The pitching staff only allowed two hits in the game to the Panthers.

Jocelyn Nilson had three hits and an RBI.  Caitlyn Hoff had two hits, one a double, and two RBIs.  Caitlyn Maa had a triple and three RBIs.  Addy Kramer had a hit and two RBIs.  Sammie Mallinger had a hit.  Emillee Stofferahn, McKenna Sichmeller, and Hanna Raethz all had an RBI.  Grace Harden pitched an inning allowing a hit while striking out one.  Mallinger pitched three innings allowing a hit while striking out eight.

The Trojans then defeated Dell Rapids 11-1 in the second game of the day.  The Trojans scored a run in the bottom of the first.  Dell Rapids tied the game in the top of the second inning, but West Central scored 10 unanswered runs, including a nine-run fourth inning to end the game on the 10-run rule.

Kramer had two hits, including a double, and three RBIs.  Harden had two singles.  Mallinger had a triple and two RBIs.  Raethz finished with a single and two RBIs.  Izzi Parsons had a hit and an RBI, and Nilson also had a single.  Harden pitched three innings allowing an earned run on four hits with one walk and two strikeouts.  Mallinger pitched one inning with two strikeouts.

West Central Softball Posts Two Shutout Wins

The West Central high school softball team posted two shutout wins at home on Sunday, September 19th allowing only one hit combined in the two games.

In their first game, West Central scored in every inning against Edgerton in a 10-0 win in four innings while not allowing a hit.  Sammie Mallinger had three hits and an RBI.  Mckenna Sichmeller had two hits and an RBI.  Grace Harden had two hits.  Both Emillee Stofferahn and Caitlyn Maa had a single and two RBIs each.  Addy Kramer and Jocelyn Nilson both had a single and an RBI.  Emma Khulman had an RBI.  Mallinger pitched all four innings with no hits allowed while walking one and striking out 11.

The strong pitching performance by West Central continued in the second game while the offense also continued to roll.  West Central scored in every inning again against Winner, this time winning 12-0 in three innings while allowing just one hit to Winner.  Harden had three hits and an RBI.  Mallinger and Kramer both had a double with two RBIs.  Sichmeller and Jenna Lueth both had a single and two RBIs.  Maa and Hanna Raethz both had singles.  Harden pitched three innings allowing one hit while striking out seven batters.

West Central Softball Earns Two Shutout Wins

The West Central high school softball team got two shutout wins on Sunday, September 12th in Madison.

In their first game of the day, West Central blanked Madison 10-0 while holding Madison to just one hit in the game.  West Central had a pair of five-run innings to start the game.  Jocelyn Nilson had three hits and an RBI.  Addy Kramer had two hits, one a triple, and two RBIs.  Grace Harden also had two hits, one a triple, and an RBI.  Caitlyn Maa had a double and an RBI.  Caitlyn Hoff also had a hit and an RBI.  McKenna Sichmeller had a triple, and Emillee Stofferahn had a single.  Hoff pitched two innings allowing a hit while walking one and striking out two.  Sammie Mallinger pitched two innings striking out five batters.

West Central then earned an 8-0 win over Dell Rapids in the second game.  Dell Rapids was held to just three hits.  The Trojans scored three in the first inning, three more in the third, and two in the sixth.  Kramer had two triples and two RBIs.  Nilson had two hits and two RBIs.  Stofferahn had a double and two RBIs.  Maa finished with a single and an RBI.  Hoff had a double, Mallinger a single, and Hanna Raethz had an RBI.  Mallinger pitched all six innings allowing just three hits with nine strikeouts.

West Central Softball Drops Two to Harrisburg

The West Central softball team lost both games of a double-header to Harrisburg on Saturday, September 4th.

In the first game, Harrisburg scored three times in the bottom of the first.  West Central got two runs in the top of the second to cut into the lead.  Caitlyn Hoff had an RBI double to score Addy Kramer, and Hoff later scored on a passed ball.  Harrisburg, however, scored three more times in the bottom of the second inning for a 6-2 advantage.  West Central got one more run in the top of the sixth on an RBI sacrifice fly by Hoff.  That was it for the Trojans as Harrisburg took the first game 6-3.

Kramer had two hits.  Hoff had a double and two RBIs.  McKenna Sichmeller had a double, and Sammie Mallinger had a single.  Mallinger pitched all six innings allowing six runs, three earned, on seven hits with two walks and seven strikeouts.

West Central struck first in the second game.  Kramer had an RBI sacrifice fly, and  Emillee Stofferahn scored on an error in the bottom of the first inning for an early 2-0 lead.  Harrisburg got a run in the top of the third and then tied the game, 2-2, in the top of the fourth inning.  The big blow game in the top of the fifth inning when Harrisburg scored four times, and the Tigers took the second game 6-2.

Izzi Parsons had two hits, including a double.  Grace Harden and Hoff each had a single, and Kramer had an RBI.  Harden pitched 4 1/3 innings allowing five runs, one earned, on three hits with six walks and two strikeouts.  Hoff pitched 2/3 of an inning allowing an unearned run on a hit with a walk and two strikeouts.

West Central (3-3) will play Madison and Dell Rapids on Sunday, September 12th.

West Central Softball 3-1 Through Four Games

The West Central High School club softball team is 3-1 through the first four games of the 2021 season.  The Trojans played two games on Sunday, August 22nd and then played two games on Sunday, August 29th.

West Central earned a 10-0 win over Tea on August 22nd.  They scored five runs in the first, a run in the third, and then four more in the fifth inning.  The Trojans also hit three home runs in the game.  Addy Kramer had two hits, including a home run, and three RBIs.  Hanna Raethz had two hits and three RBIs.  Grace Harden had two hits, one a double.  Jocelyn Nilson also had two hits.  Jenna Lueth had a home run and two RBIs.  Breanna Stofferahn had a home run and an RBI.  Caitlyn Hoff had a hit and an RBI.  McKenna Sichmeller finished with a triple, and Sammie Mallinger had a single.  Mallinger pitched five innings allowing just one hit while striking out 12 batters.

The Trojans won their second game on the 22nd against Lennox, winning by a score of 7-3.  West Central scored two in the bottom of the second.  Lennox cut the lead in half with a run in the top of the third, but West Central had a three-run third to make it a 5-1 score.  Both teams scored two runs in the fifth.  Caitlyn Maa had three hits, including a triple, with two RBIs.  Raethz had three hits, including a double, and an RBI.  Izzi Parsons had three singles.  Mallinger had two hits and two RBIs.  Stofferahn had two doubles and an RBI.  Harden and Nilson both had a single.  Harden pitched all six innings allowing three runs, one earned, on eight hits with one walk and five strikeouts.

West Central won their first game on August 29th, a 7-0 combined no-hitter win against Dakota Valley.  West Central scored three in the third and four in the fourth for the win.  Stofferahn had two hits, one a double, and two RBIs.  Parsons had a double and two RBIs.  Sickmeller had a double and an RBI.  Maa also had a single.  Stofferahn pitched an inning striking out one batter.  Mallinger pitched four innings walking one and striking out nine.

Playing Tea for the second time in a week, West Central suffered their first loss of the season on the 29th.  Tea scored three times in the third inning and two more in the fourth for a 5-0 win.  West Central was held to just three hits.  Hoff had a triple, and Harden and Kramer both had a single.  Harden pitched three innings allowing three runs, none of them earned, on four hits with a walk and three strikeouts.  Hoff pitched three innings allowing two earned runs on three hits with five strikeouts.
