Robert “Bob” Troff

Bob TroffRobert “Bob” P. Troff, 72, of Trent, passed away on Wednesday, May 7, 2014 at Avera Dougherty House in Sioux Falls. His funeral service will begin at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, May 12, 2014 at Messiah Lutheran Church, rural Flandreau. Interement will be in the Egan Hillside Cemetery, rural Egan. Robert Pete Troff was born on September 24, 1941 at Swea City, IA the son of Pete and Ila (Beadle) Troff. He grew up on the IA family farm and attended Swea City, Ledyard & Armstrong, IA schools. He graduated from Swea City High School in 1959. After high school he attended some college at Gustavus Adolphus College, St Paul, MN, Estherville Community College and Mankato State. He worked with Ashback Construction, Co. out of St. Paul, MN and worked in Houston, TX . He married Lillian “Lolly” (Olson) Fisher on May 24, 1965 in Sioux Falls, SD. The couple made their home in Trent, SD. Bob became a Sales Rep for the Quaker Oats Co. & Cargill. Bob & Lolly’s passion for horses inspired them to build a horse barn where they trained 75-100 horses per year for ten years. Together they put on Quarter Horse and Appaloosa shows and sales. Bob was the local Trent City Marshall in the late 1960’s. In the 1970s, they purchased the first farm east of Trent with about 300 acres and raised beef and club cattle. Bob also worked off the farm with Wyland /Wyco Construction and later as Moody Country Weed Supervisor. In 2002, they retired and sold the cattle herd but remained on the farm where he continues his hobby with horses, cattle and other farming interests.

Bob was an avid reader and a strong promoter of educating youth with regards to livestock and agriculture. He was the founder of the Moody County Report Ag Theft [MCRAT] program which later was reorganized where funding went to the Flandreau and the Moody County Harvest Ag Festival Scholarship.

Bob was preceded in death by his parents, Pete and Ila.

Those left to cherish his memory are his wife of 49 years, Lolly of Trent, a sister, Beverly (Jerry) Schumann of Okoboji, IA, children, Todd Fisher of Trent, Robin (Fisher) (Jon)Rowe Kalamazoo, MI and Rodney Troff of Trent; his four grandchildren, Chelsea Cullen of AZ, Caitlin Cullen, AZ, Kasey Fisher, OK, & Natalie Rowe, MI; and his niece and many nephews.

Dr. Christopher J. Moller

Christopher MollerDr. Christopher J. Moller, 82, of Brookings died Wednesday, May 7, 2014 at the Brookview Manor in Brookings.

Funeral services will begin at 11:00 AM Saturday, May 10, 2014 at Ascension Lutheran Church in Brookings. Burial will be in the West Nidaros Cemetery, rural Crooks. Visitation will be from 4-6:00 PM Friday at the Minnehaha Funeral Home, Baltic and one hour before the service at the church.   Condolences may be left at www.minnehahafuneralhome.com.

Christopher Jennings Moller was born June 3, 1931 in Dell Rapids to parents Christopher and Jennie (Iverson) Moller. He grew up four miles west of Baltic and attended the Willow Creek Country School and graduated from Lyons High School. After high school, he attended St. Olaf College and SDSU before entering the United States Marine Corps. After his service, he attended USD and graduated from USD Medical School. He then graduated from Northwestern Medical School in Chicago and took his specially training as a Ears, Nose and Throat Physician at the University of Nebraska at Omaha.

Christopher married Florence Nielson June 17, 1958 at Benton Lutheran Church rural Crooks.

Christopher started his work at Minneapolis General, his general practice in Dell Rapids, then to Mitchell and later in Mankato until his retirement. In 1999 they moved to Brookings, where he enjoyed woodworking and reading.

During his career he also volunteered for two month in Vietnam treating civilians and also in the Presentation Sisters Program in Mexico.

Grateful for having shared his life are his wife, Florence, Brookings; children, Eric (Nannette) Moller, Fullerton, CA; Katherine Magee, Sioux Falls; Jennifer Moller, Luverne, MN; Margaret (Dave Conrad) Moller, St. Cloud, MN; ten grandchildren, Christopher, Michael and Alexander Moller, David and Thomas Wimer, Kristin Moller, Vance (Kim Star) Magee, Adam Magee, Maybelle and Donald Conrad, and six great grandchildren, Izabella and Ramone Moller, King, Lennox and Cashiz Harwood, and Kierra Magee He was preceded in death by his parents Christopher and Jennie Moller. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Memorials may be directed to Feeding Brookings or the Harvest Table.

Eloy Heilman

Eloy HeilmanEloy Heilman, age 63, died unexpectedly at his home of natural causes on May 3, 2014.

He was born on July 26, 1950 at Aberdeen, SD to Pius and Nathalia (Kappenman) Heilman. He moved to Madison in 1959. He graduated from Madison High School and from Dakota State College. He married Lynette Rucker at Madison on April 24, 1982. They owned and operated Thrifty Dry Cleaners for 10 years. He was working at Heilman Construction along with his brother at the time of his death. He served in the US Naval Reserve as a Cee Bee. He enjoyed hunting and fishing.

He is survived by his wife – Lynette of Madison. Two sons – Matt (Amy) of Dell Rapids, SD and Seth of Madison, one grandson – Aiden and one granddaughter- Summer. His parents – Pius and Nathalia Heilman of Madison. Two brothers – Richard and Dr Bernard (Linda) both of Madison.

Funeral Mass will be held at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, May 6, 2014 at St Thomas Aquinas Church with Rev DeWayne Kayser officiating. Burial will be in Lake Park Cemetery, rural Rutland. Visitation will begin one hour prior to services at Weiland Funeral Chapel.

David James Barg

David was born to parents Fred and Peggy (Pratt) Barg October 27, 1977 in Sioux Falls. He grew up in Crooks and Garretson and graduated from Strive High in Dell Rapids. He then went on to earn an Associate of Science degree in Business Administration and later graduated with honors when he earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Business Management. He and Tammy Swier were married June 15, 2002. David resided in Canton with his wife Tammy and beloved pets. David is survived by his wife, Tammy, Canton; parents Fred and Peggy Barg, Garretson; a sister Jessica, Sioux Falls and many aunts, uncles and cousins.

David was an active participant in several online forums where he debated world and political issues. He enjoyed fishing, cooking, politics, world issues, NASCAR and spending time with his family and pets. Dave and Tammy both shared a love of animals and have brought in several strays over the years. His favorite pet was his dog “Wiggles”, who can often be found hiding under the bed.

Dave’s interest included buying, selling and playing with micro machines. He was an expert. Dave enjoyed spoiling his nephews with micro machines and the noisiest, most annoying toys he could find! This was his payback for getting photographed so many times for the yearly family calendar. He also loved teasing the neighbors by putting out opposing politicians signs.

Dave and his dad have enjoyed many hunting and fishing trips together. He loved the serenity of the outdoors and being away from the busyness of life.

Shirley (Schutte) Schnell

Shirley SchnellShirley J. Schnell was born on Jan. 23, 1931, in Philip, the daughter of Julius and Sophia (Cook) Egeberg.  She spent her early years and received her education in Bruce and graduated from Bruce High School in 1948.

Shirley was united in marriage to Arthur Schutte on Jan. 1, 1950, in Estelline. She was employed at the Estelline Hospital from 1948 until 1955. In 1955, she was employed for Dr. Force Dentistry in Estelline until 1962 and from 1962 to 1969 she worked at S.D. State University in the Animal Science Department. She then worked for Dr. Longworth in Watertown until 1980 when she bought the Hi-Way Cafe in Estelline. Arthur died on Sept. 30, 1981, in Estelline and she was married to Tom Schnell in Estelline on Sept. 20, 1983. Shirley continued to own and operate the Hi-Way Cafe for eight years until her retirement. Tom died on April 21, 1991, in Estelline and she moved to Brookings in 1993 and lived at Briarwood. Shirley died on Sunday, April 27, 2014, at The Neighborhood at Brookview at the age of 83 years.

She was a member of St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church in Estelline and was active in the Ladies Auxiliary, the Altar Society and after moving to Brookings was a member of St. Thomas More Catholic Parish.

She is survived by four daughters, Sandra McGeough (William), Sharon Chapin (Carroll) Helen Johnson (Robert Boniface), all of Brookings and Sharla Schutte-Dennis (Mark) of Dell Rapids; two stepdaughters, Jean Pletcher (Dick) of Eagan, Minn., and Barbara Johnson (Gordon) of Los Angeles; one stepson, Dan Schnell of Mitchell; 11 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Vivian Furtado of Sparks, Nev., and Betty Skarloken of Tracy, Calif.; and one brother, Roy Egeberg (Marian) of Omaha, Neb.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two husbands; one grandson, Kelly McGeough; three sisters, Merlyn, Evelyn and Bernice; and one brother, Ray.  Mass of Christian burial will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 30 at St. Thomas More Catholic Parish in Brookings.  Visitation will be from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday at Rude’s Funeral Home in Brookings with a rosary and Scripture service beginning at 6:30 p.m.  Geise Funeral Home of Estelline is in charge of arrangements.  Condolences may be left at www.geisefuneralhome.com.

Rosella (Nelson) Van Duzee

Rosella M. Van Duzee!Rosella M. Van Duzee, 81, of Clinton, Iowa, died on April 2, 2014, at the Mercy Medical Center, North Campus.  Memorial services took place at the First United Methodist Church.

Rosella Mae Nelson was born on May 10, 1932, in Dell Rapids, to David and Emma (Christensen) Nelson. She graduated from Dell Rapids High School and Dakota State University in Madison.   She married Grant “Thomas” Van Duzee on June 15, 1956, in Dell Rapids.  Rosella taught third grade in Huron. She later worked at the Elaine Lass Nursery School and Klines Department Store in Clinton.  She was a member of the First United Methodist Church.

She is survived by her husband, Tom of Clinton; daughter, Debra Van Duzee of Gum Spring, Va.; two granddaughters; her sister, Loraine Ollis of Athens, Ga.; her brother, Roger (Darlene) Nelson of Dell Rapids; and her sister-in-law, Gwyn Brenner of Huron.

She was preceded in death by two sisters and one brother.

Funeral services will begin at 2:00 PM Sunday, May 4, 2014 at the Lutheran Church of Dell Rapids. Visitation with the family present will be from 4:00 to 7:00 PM Saturday, May 3, 2014 at Minnehaha Funeral Home in Dell Rapids.

Funeral services in Grand Island, NE will be at 1:00 PM Tuesday, May 6, 2014 at All Faiths Funeral Home, 2929 S. Locust with burial to follow at Grand Island Cemetery.

J. W. “Bill” was born February 17, 1943 in Woodward, OK to parents John and Clara (Foale) Bixenmann. He attended school in Grand Island, NE and graduated from high school in Denver, CO. Bill worked for Lockheed Martin for a short time before starting his career with Western Electric/ Alcatel-Lucent, retiring after thirty years. Bill married Judy Wiese and lived in Grand Island. This union was blessed with two children. Bill and Lucy Snyder Gibson were married December 18, 1982. They moved to Dell Rapids in 1987. Bill started Tender Lawn Care business as he always enjoyed landscaping. He was an avid snowmobiler and motorcyclist and liked racing. Bill was active in the Lutheran Church of Dell Rapids. Bill looked forward to breakfast and coffee with the guys each day. He loved all children especially babies.

Grateful for having shared his life are his wife, Lucy Bixenmann, Dell Rapids; children, Jackie (John) Bartu, Grand Island, John (Brenda) Bixenmann, Grand Island; Adam Gibson, Dell Rapids, Ryan (Ann) Gibson, Aurora, CO ; six grandchildren, Caitlin (Nate) Stalhnecker, Bryce Bartu, Taylor Bartu, Kylee Story, Sierra Bixenmann and Dylan Gibson; great-granddaughter, Dahlia Wassinger; brothers, Mike (Norma) Bixenmann, Ogallala, NE, Randy Bixenmann, Elko, Fred Bixenmann; and sister, Janice Brandt, Grand Island, NE. Ruth Williams

Ruth WilliamsRuth E. Williams, age 95, of Madison, died Thurs., April 10, 2014, at Bethel Lutheran Home, Madison.

Ruth Schmidt was born Feb. 17, 1919, at rural Madison, to Clarence & Josephine (Ryness) Schmidt. She graduated from Orland High School and obtained her teaching certificate from Eastern Normal School, Madison. She taught school at Moose and Tuynman Country Schools. Ruth married her high school sweetheart Craig Williams on Feb. 18, 1939, at Salem. They farmed in Orland and Franklin Townships before retiring to Madison in 1982.

Ruth was president and 50-year member of Lake County Extension, president and member of Franklin PTA, and member of Franklin Study Club and Hustling Housewives Extension Club. She was also a member of St. John Lutheran Church, Madison, where she served on the council, and was an officer and member of the ALCW for many years. Ruth loved playing cards, collecting dolls, and going to rummage sales. She considered her six children to be her greatest accomplishment.

Ruth was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Craig in 2006; two infant grandchildren; a great-grandson, Zachary Kischnick; a son-in-law, Les Anderson; a daughter-in-law, Shirley Williams; one sister, Clara Frye and two brothers, Ralph and Donald Schmidt.

Survivors include three sons, Ronald of Burton, MI, Darrold (Dianne) of Dell Rapids and Steven S. (Linda) of Madison; three daughters, Eleanor (James N.) Enga of Madison, Joan (Dennis) Degen of Hartford and Carol (Glenn) Cornell of Clark; 16 grandchildren; 24 great grandchildren; three step great-grandchildren; six step great-great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Fern (Lee) Anderson of Worthington, MN; and many nieces and nephews.
