Mike Baumberger

Mike BaumbergerMark “Mike” Baumberger, loving husband, father, and grandfather, entered into eternal rest on Tuesday, September 1, 2015 in San Tan Valley, Arizona.

Mike was born on his parent’s rural farm home in Colton, South Dakota on February 17, 1938. He was the eldest of ten children (six boys and four girls). He attended Saint Mary’s Catholic School in Dell Rapids, SD. Mike worked with his father and siblings on the family farm until he was 17-years-old when he joined the United States Air Force and worked as a jet mechanic from 1955 to 1959. After this time, he was well on his way to becoming a Jack-of-all-trades.

In July of 1960, he met Bea Barck – the love of his life, his rock, his everything, at Cooty Days in Dell Rapids, SD. On June 23, 1961, they were wed at Saint Joseph’s Cathedral in Sioux Falls, SD. One of Mike’s proudest moments was serving the community for five-and-a-half years on the Sioux Falls Fire Department beginning in 1964. Mike then became a trucker and an owner/operator for the following 30 years, which provided a wonderful life for his family. In 2005, Mike retired and enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren whenever possible.

Mike was preceded in death by his mother and father, Catherine (Geraets) Baumberger and Marcus Baumberger; his sister, Virginia (Baumberger) Zimmer; son-in-law, Greg Filipek; and brother-in-law, Bob Deiss.

Survivors include his loving wife, Bea (Barck) Baumberger; his daughters, Brenda Baumberger and Michaelee “Mikki” (Baumberger) Shapard (Gilbert Silva); his son, Bart (Cathy Baker) Baumberger; his grandchildren, Kayla Baumberger, Chelsea Baumberger, Cristian Shapard, Olivia Shapard, and Eric Wilson; his siblings, Gene (Vonnie Berger) Baumberger, David (Marcia Warne) Baumberger, Rosee (Baumberger) Deiss, LaLa (Baumberger) Felton (Verne), Dan Baumberger (Brenda Rademacher), Tim (Pat Kris) Baumberger, Roger (Janet Hoemann) Baumberger, Ceedy (Baumberger) Johnson (Steve), as well as his many nieces, nephews, great nieces, and great nephews.

The family will be present to greet friends from 5:00 to 7:00pm Friday, September 11, 2015, at Miller Funeral Home, 507 S. Main Avenue. A prayer service will follow at 7:00pm. Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 9:00am, Saturday, at the Cathedral of St. Joseph, Sioux Falls. Memorials may be directed to the VFW Post 628, for local Veterans care. Wayne Burkhart

Wayne BurkhartWayne Burkhart, 91, of Dell Rapids passed away on Saturday, September 5, 2015 at the Dells Nursing and Rehab Center. His funeral service will be held on Thursday, September 10, 2015 at the Lutheran Church of Dell Rapids. Wayne Elwert Burkhart was born on July 19th 1924 to John and Myrtie (Greiff) Burkhart in Dell Rapids, SD where he grew up on the family farm. He graduated from Dell Rapids High School in 1942. He then served in the United States Navy. Wayne married Lois Mohrman on January 11th, 1950 and they farmed 6 miles east of Dell Rapids on the family farm.

Wayne was a member of the Dell Rapids Legion Post and Firing Squad. He belonged to the Minnehaha County and SD State Livestock Association. In 1982, he was awarded the SD Livestock Feeder of the Year. Wayne served many years as president of the Dell Rapids Co-op Grain board. He was a member of the Dell Rapids Lutheran church.

Wayne and Lois where blessed with 4 children, Barry Burkhart, Kay (Arny) Erickson, Brian Burkhart (special friend Pattie Loosbrock), and Bruce (Julie) Burkhart; 10 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his parents, son Barry, brother and sister-in-law, Andrew and Betty Burkhart, sister and brother-in-law, Doris and Jim Wiarda, nephew, Bill Burkhart, and nephew, Don Mohrman.

Kenneth “Sarge” Anderson

Ken AndersonKenneth D. “Sarge” Anderson, 88, of Dell Rapids passed away on Monday, August 31, 2015 at the Dells Nursing and Rehab Center in Dell Rapids. His funeral service will begin at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, September 5, 2015 in the Lutheran Church of Dell Rapids Chapel. Interment will be in the Dell Rapids Cemetery. Kenneth Dale “Sarge” Anderson was born on March 14, 1927 in the family farm house northwest of Dell Rapids. He was the son of Louie and Florence (Relf) Anderson. He attended grade school at the Johanson Country School near the farm. He would often tell about how he walked or rode a pony to school. Occasionally, it was up hill both ways. He then attended Dell Rapids Public High School, graduating in 1945. He started farming with his father, a partnership that continued until his father passed away in 1961. Ken met Gracia Carlson at a dance at the Arkota Ballroom in Sioux Falls. They married on November 15, 1952 at the First Lutheran Church in Sioux Falls. The couple made their home in a little house they built on the Anderson Farm. When his mother moved into town, they moved into the original house on the home place. Gracia died on February 7, 2008. Sarge remained on the farm until April, 2011, when he moved into Orchard Hills in Dell Rapids. In June of 2014, he became a resident of the Dells Nursing and Rehab Center.

Ken was a member of the Lutheran Church of Dell Rapids and served on the Bethany Board. He loved farming, and enjoyed farm living, attending farm sales, and traveling to farm shows because he could always find someone to talk about farming. He enjoyed visiting over a cup of coffee. His life was all about raising cattle, hogs, and crops. He liked to utilize new practices such as an automated feed mill and a new crop called soybeans. He always had something to tinker on or fix. He was appreciative of his hired hands, Les and Judy Walters, Pastor Earl Johnson, and others. Les, his helper and friend for 40 plus years, also passed away just hours earlier than Ken.

Ken was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, his sisters, Reva Finch and Irene Anderson and his brother-in-law, Fred Finch.

He is survived by his sons, Dale (Lana) Anderson of Pierre and Dean (Jo-Ann Graziano) of New York, NY; his daughter, Sharlene (Troy) Swier of Sioux Falls; his 10 grandchildren, Shandra (Matthew) Carr, Cody Swier, Corbin Swier, Kaylee Swier, Kellie Swier, Davis Anderson, Jared Anderson, Thomas Swier, Kenton Swier, Alyssa Swier, and his two great-grandchildren Liam and Landon Carr.

Les Walters

Les WaltersLeslie “Les” R. Walters, 81, of Dell Rapids lost his battle to cancer Sunday, August 30, 2015 at Dougherty House Hospice. Les was born June 27, 1934 to parents George and Grace (Groen) Walters in Kanarazi, MN. He attended school through the 8th grade and then enjoyed helping his uncle on the farm during his teenage years. Les enjoyed working road construction and farming through the years. He continued his love of farming by assisting Kenny Anderson with various duties on the farm for over 40 years.

Les married Judy Skatvold on April 15, 1959 at the Lutheran Church of Dell Rapids where they continue to be members. They lived around the Dell Rapids area through the years. Les always put his family and friends first; always willing to lend a helping hand. He especially enjoyed “social time” with his family and many friends.

Grateful for having shared his life are his wife, Judy; daughters, Kim (Pat) Lindholm, Cheryl (Tim) Bauman, Carol (Joel) Bunkers and Julie Sharp (Kris Snieve); grandchildren, Jeremy (Lori), Angie (Jim), Brent, Joshua, Amy (Matt), Brett (Samantha), Michelle (Garrett), Brittnie (Zach), Dylan (Stacia), Nikki, Miriah (J.D.) and Brodie; 20 great-grandchildren; sister, Aleida Kruger; brothers, Dick (Doris), Glen (Norma), Ed (LaVonne), George (Donna), Joe, Darrel (Marge), Alvin (Joy), Ervin (Kathy), Arvin and Ronnie (Sandy); brother-in-laws, LeRoy (Diane), Dean (Karen) and Keith Skatvold; numerous nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Les was preceded in death by 2 children, Gary and Teresa; his parents; mother and father-in-law and brother.

We will miss his sense of humor and smile, but will never forget him!

Frances Loiseau

Francis LoiseauFrances Loiseau, 91, of Flandreau, passed away Wednesday, August 26, 2015 at Edgewood Vista Assisted Living, Flandreau. Frances was born January 19, 1924 at Flandreau, SD to Ray and Gladys (Raines) Valentine. She graduated from Egan High School in 1941 and then worked for the telephone company in Sioux Falls. She received her teaching certificate from Sioux Falls College and taught at Faris Country School for one term. Frances married James Michael Loiseau on June 30, 1947 at St. Peter Catholic Church, Colman, SD. They lived and farmed at Evergreen Stock Farm in Egan, SD. Her husband preceded her in death December 25, 1977.

Frances is survived by eight children, James (Mary Dell) Loiseau, Flandreau, Barb (Tom) Westover, Egan, Charles (Sandi) Loiseau, Frankfort, KS, Beverly (Bill) Kennedy, Vermillion, Mick (Cindy) Loiseau, Egan, Elisabeth (John) Hollmann, Hot Springs, Mary (Kem) Kjerstad, Rapid City, Val Loiseau, Hot Springs, 14 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, three sisters-in-law, Pete Valentine, Vancouver, WA, Dorothy Mousel, Flandreau, Mary Ann Loiseau, Egan, and brother-in-law Dave Gingerich, Des Moines, WA. Frances was preceded in death by her husband, parents, sister Dorothy Gingerich and brother Charles Valentine.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 am Saturday, August 29, 2015 at Ss. Simon and Jude Catholic Church, Flandreau, with burial at Hillside Cemetery, Egan. Arthur Vortherms

Arthur W. Vortherms was born on April 22, 1937 in Dell Rapids, SD the son of Bernard and Rosa (Ahlers) Vortherms. He graduated from Dell Rapids St. Mary High School in 1955. Following high school, he attended St. John’s University in St. Cloud in 1956 and then enlisted in the United States Army from 1957 – 1963. He married Judith Roti August 22, 1964 in Dell Rapids and they began their life together on the family farm. In addition to farming, Art drove truck for local freight companies Hyman Freightways and Roadway Express, retiring from Roadway in 2000. After retirement he worked part time at the Dell Rapids Elevator, Lodmell-Schaefer, and doing volunteer work for St. Mary Parish.

Art’s family was everything to him and many of his favorite times were spent hosting family suppers on Sunday nights with his grandchildren playing baseball in the backyard. As the grandchildren grew and began playing organized sports, he cherished going to all of their baseball, softball, football, basketball and volleyball games until poor health prohibited his attendance. He was a St. Mary Cardinal fan for life. Art also enjoyed camping with his family when the children were young, coaching his son’s baseball teams, doing crossword and Sudoku puzzles, playing cards and cribbage, letting his grandkids beat him at checkers, and upon retirement, building his own lawnmower which he took great pride in.

Those left to cherish his memory are his daughter, Tammy (Robert) Michel; son, John (Laura) Vortherms; daughter, Shelly (Jon) Kubly, all of Dell Rapids; his 10 grandchildren, Jodi (Josh) Spaans, Kari (Jared) Hettinger, Casey (Chelsey) Michel, Jason and Kelly Michel, Derrick and Kaitlyn Vortherms and Danielle, Austin and Brandon Kubly; great-grandchildren, Callie, Carter and Camden Spaans and Blake Hettinger. He is also survived by brothers and sisters-in-law, Jackie Wold, Jim and Donna Roti, David and Carol Roti and Arlin and Suzan Johnson. He was preceded in death by his wife, Judith; parents; sister, Rosemary Vortherms; brother, Bernard Vortherms (who died at birth) and several brothers and sisters-in-law.

David Charles Grav was born on July 21, 1962 at Bellflower, CA, the son of Peter and Arlene (Johnson) Grav. He grew up in California and moved with his family to South Dakota in the middle of his Jr. year. He graduated from Dell Rapids High School in 1981. He married Vickie Eulberg on May 11, 1984 at the Lutheran Church of Dell Rapids. The couple made their home in Dell Rapids. David worked for Perkins Restaurant, LG Everist Quarry, Linton in Sioux Falls, Reecy Farm Supply, Central States in Lyons and most recently Crimson in Brandon until poor health forced his retirement.

He was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church, the Catholic Order of Foresters, and a lifetime member of the Dell Rapids Sportsman Club. He loved to farm, hunt and woodworking.

Dave is survived by his wife, Vickie of Dell Rapids; his sons, Brodie (Brianna) of Dell Rapids, Kyle of Austin, TX and Kaleb of Dell Rapids; his daughter, Missy (Clint) Schull of Dell Rapids; his grandchildren, Bryana, Jade, Ethan and Brecken; his parents, Peter and Arlene Grave of CA; his brother, Steve (Cindy) Grav of CA and his sister, Joan (Leo) Glabb of CA.

Thomas Ordell Fersdahl was born March 3, 1944 in Sioux Falls to parents Gustav and Clara (Jensen) Fersdahl. He grew up on the family farm near Renner and graduated from Baltic High School in 1962.

Thomas served in the South Dakota Army National guard from 1964 to 1970. He also farmed with his brother, Gary until 1988. He was also known as a handyman, who could fix anything.

Thomas married Arlene Larson October 8, 2015 at Benton Lutheran Church, rural Crooks.

He was a lifelong member of West Nidaros Lutheran Church and served on the Baltic Elevator Board, Pioneer Cemetery Board and the Sverdrup Township Board.

Survivors include his children, Tammi Fockler, Baltic; Cathy (Jerry) Muston, Renner, and Jason (Erica) Fersdahl, Dell Rapids; six grandchildren, Haley Fockler, Joe, Sam, & Matt Muston, Braden & Lincoln Fersdahl; and a special friend Mary Bump, Renner; three nephews and a niece. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Gary.

Leann Mary Klein

Leann KleinLeann Mary Klein, age 41, of Marshall, died peacefully and surrounded by family on Wednesday, August 19, 2015, at her home in Marshall. Memorial services are 10:30 AM, Monday, August 24, 2015, at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church in Marshall. Private family interment will be at a later date. Visitation will be held from 4:00 – 8:00 PM Sunday, August 23, 2015 at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church in Marshall. A rosary will be held at 4:00 PM and a prayer service is scheduled for 7:00 PM. Leann Mary Neisius was born on November 14, 1973, in Marshall, Minnesota to LeRoy and Diann (Reed) Neisius. Leann was baptized, received first communion, and was confirmed at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Cottonwood, Minnesota. She grew up attending school in Clarkfield which later combined with Granite Falls. She graduated from GFC High School with the class of 1992. She furthered her education at South Dakota State University and became a Registered Nurse.

On November 29, 1996, Leann was united in marriage to Jason Klein at St. Clotilde Catholic Church in Green Valley. The couple spent over 18 years together and raised three children, Rebecca, Nicholas, and Emma. Leann and Jason made their home in Sioux Falls where Leann worked for Select Specialty Hospital and Sioux Valley Hospital. They moved to Willmar in 1998, where she worked at Rice Memorial Hospital. In 2001, the family moved to Marshall and Leann worked as a nurse as well as a clinical instructor for Minnesota West Community College at Avera Marshall Regional Medical Center.

Leann is survived by her husband, Jason Klein of Marshall, and their children, Rebecca (18), Nicholas (16), and Emma (12); parents, LeRoy and Diann Neisius of Marshall; Jason’s parents, Jerry and Judi Klein of Dell Rapids, SD; siblings, Paul (and Julie) Neisius of Hanley Falls, and their children Mitchell and Jack; Laura (and Jon) Scheer of South Haven, and their children Jessica, Noelle, Kara, and Rachel; Dan Neisius (and Jamie Benaquis) of Navarre, FL and her children Aiden and Ashlynn several brothers and sisters-in-law; Joe (and Nici) Klein of White, SD, and their children Evelyn, Jeanette, Catherine and Raymond; Jeff (and Sara) Klein of Wichita Falls, TX and their children Savannah, Lillian and Natalie; Josh (and Pam) Klein of Highlands Ranch, CO and their children Kolby, Jaden and Tanner; Jake (and Amber) Klein of Plymouth and their children Madelyn, Aaron and Hailey; Jeremy (and Clarissa) Klein, stationed at Ramstein AFB Germany; other relatives, and many friends.
