Robert (Bob) Stoltenburg

Robert StoltenburgRobert (Bob) John Stoltenburg, Sr., 74, passed away on Saturday, Jan. 2, 2016, in Dell Rapids, SD, surrounded by his family. His memorial service will begin at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, January 7, 2016 in the Kahler Funeral Home Chapel. Visitation will be one hour prior to the start of the service. Bob was born in Watertown, SD on Aug. 5, 1941, to Julius and Margaret Stoltenburg. He spent his youth in Watertown and quickly developed his love for hunting and fishing with his father.

He enlisted in the Army in 1958, attending basic training in Fort Carson, CO, and served his first tour in Germany until 1963. While on leave, Bob met his wife of 52 years, Kathryn May Hakes. They were married on Dec. 16, 1963 in Lawton, OK, where Bob was stationed until April, 1965. In April, 1965, Bob was deployed to Germany. In June, 1966, he was sent to GA, for Jungle Training and in Nov. 1966, was deployed to Vietnam.

Bob returned to the States in 1967, stationed in Fort Hood, TX. In April, 1968, he returned to Vietnam for one more year. He was stationed at Dugway Proving Rounds, UT, upon his return. There, he injured his back and in July 1973, was medically discharged from the Army. Bob and his family then moved back to Watertown, SD, where Bob did various jobs. A Vietnam War Veteran, Bob was awarded the following medals: two Bronze Stars, two Army Commendation Medals, an Army Good Conduct Medal, a Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, and an Army Rifle Medal.

In Spring of 1979, Bob and his family moved to Pierre, SD, where they bought Sunset Lodge, a hunting and fishing lodge and restaurant north of town on the Missouri River. They spent many years as a family at the lodge before Bob and Kathy sold it in 1990. They then retired near Pierre. Bob spent a majority of his retirement hunting and fishing, babysitting grandkids and doing woodworking projects, including making birdhouses.

In Spring of 2004, Bob and Kathy moved to Colman, SD where he enjoyed playing cards and watching his favorite football team, the Chicago Bears. Bob loved hosting his kids and grandkids, beating them at Rummy and telling stories.

Bob is survived by his wife, Kathryn Stoltenburg, children Deborah (Ed) Venard and children, Courtney, Paige, Connor, Austin and Reed, of Murdo; Julie (Dennis) Moore and children Karlee and Carson, of Murdo; Robert Stoltenburg, Jr. and children Kaitlyn, Kayla, Justin and Allison, and friend Lea and son EJ; and Mark (Jill) Stoltenburg and son Hunter, and Mark’s son Logan Smith; Sister Judy (Gary) Hopp; Aunt Dorothy Rukstad; Great-Grandson, Alyster Scheel (son of Kaitlyn); and many nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents; his step-mother Ruth; one brother James and one sister Barbara Gonzalez.

Elizabeth Sieps

Elizabeth SiepsElizabeth Bertina Sieps “Betty”, age 101, passed away peacefully on January 2, 2016, at Avera Prince of Peace Retirement Community in Sioux Falls, SD. Her Funeral Service will be held at the Dell Rapids Reformed Church on Thursday, January 7th, 2016, at 10:30am. Visitation will be held at Kahler Funeral Home in Dell Rapids on Wednesday, January 6th, from 3-7pm with family present from 5-7pm.  On-Line Condolences may be left at Kahler Funeral Home.

Betty was born in Bridgewater, SD on April 26th, 1914 to Joseph D. and Katherine Tschetter. She attended country school near Bridgewater, SD, Bridgewater High School, and graduated high school from Freeman Academy in 1933. She went on to attend Freeman Junior College and then earned a degree in nursing from Sioux Valley School of Nursing in 1937. Betty worked as a Registered Nurse for Sioux Valley Hospital and various VA hospitals in Hot Springs, SD, Cheyenne, WY, and Chicago, IL, and Dell Rapids Community Hospital until 1982. During her tenure as a nurse, she met Henry Sieps and they married on November 3rd, 1940. Betty was a passionate gardener and received a title of “Master Gardener” from classes she attended. She was also an avid member of the Dell Rapids Garden Club, Reformed Church Women of Dell Rapids, Dell Rapids Senior Citizens, and Sioux Valley Hospital Alumni. She and Henry traveled to Annville, Kentucky as volunteers for mission work.

Betty is survived by her son, Roger of Dell Rapids, daughter, Mary (Todd) Madson of Sioux Falls, brother, Delore (Anita) Tschetter of Sioux Falls, daughter- in-law, Jennifer Anderson of Coppell, TX, grandchildren, Nancy (Paul) Mergen of Brookings, SD, Bob (Barb) Sieps of Lincoln, NE, Lori Sieps (Ante Kutlesa) of San Jose, CA, Kelsey Madson of Denver, CO, Matt Madson (fiancé Sandy) of Minneapolis, MN, Kirsten and Jessica Madson of Sioux Falls, numerous nieces and nephews, five great grandchildren and one great great-grandchild.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Henry, parents, Joseph and Katherine Tschetter, son, William “Bill”, and siblings, Anna Gross, David H., Jacob, Marie, Walter, David, John, Joe, and Theodore.

Joyce (Fiegen) Richter

Joyce RichterJoyce Richter, age 88, died peacefully on December 30, 2015 in Omaha, NE on her 88th birthday surrounded by her children and some of their families. Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 10:00 a.m. Monday, January 4, 2016 at St. Dominic’s Catholic Church in Canton. Visitation with family present will be Sunday from 2-5 p.m. at the church. Joyce Maxine (Fiegen) Richter was born December 30, 1927 in Dell Rapids, SD the eldest daughter of Jennie (Anderson) Fiegen and John Fiegen. Joyce attended school and grew up in the Dell Rapids area on various farms. After high school, Joyce joined the cadet nursing corp and graduated from McKennan School of Nursing.

Joyce was united in marriage to Earl Richter of Madison, SD on June 13, 1950. Joyce was a practicing nurse for a few years before dedicating her time to raising their six children. During their marriage, Earl’s career took them throughout South Dakota, eventually settling in Canton, SD for 40 years. Joyce was an active member of St. Dominic’s Catholic Church and a past Altar Society president. Joyce enjoyed volunteering in the community.

Joyce’s special hobbies were her love for playing bridge and mahjong with her many friends.

Eight years ago Joyce moved to the Prince of Peace retirement community where she continued to play bridge with many new friends. Joyce was preceded in death by her husband, Earl, her parents, brother, Melvin Fiegen of Dell Rapids, and sister, Helen Liester of Garretson.

Joyce is survived by her six children: Diane Houser, Munster, IN, Janice (Randy) Bennett, Jacksonville, FL, Eileen (Ron) Wiebelhaus, Austin, MN, Mary (Bob) Davis, Peoria, IL, Dr. Dan (Sheila) Richter, Omaha, NE, and Joe (Sue Griffith) Richter, Dakota Dunes, SD; sister, Dorothy Baumberger, Colton, SD; brother Virgil (Shirley) Fiegen, Dell Rapids, SD, 20 grandchildren, and 5 great-grandchildren.

Annette Randall

Annette Randall, 73, of Dell Rapids passed away on Thursday, December 31, 2015 in Sanford hospice cottage after a long battle with Alzheimer’s. Her funeral service will begin at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, January 6, 2016 in River Community Church, Dell Rapids. Visitation on Tuesday, January 5, 2016 will begin at noon at Kahler Funeral Home and the family will be present at 5:00 p.m. A Prayer Service will begin 7:00 p.m. in the Kahler Chapel.  On-Line Condolences may be left at Kahler Funeral Home.

Annette Lea Faris was born January 21,1942 in Dell Rapids,SD with her twin sister Janette. Her parents were K.T. and Elsie Faris. She grew up in Dells and attended Dell Rapids public school where she was active in band and choir . She attended First Baptist church and sang in the choir and was involved  in youth group. She was a lifeguard at the Dells pool during her high school years. She attended Sioux Falls College earning a degree and eventually a masters in elementary education. She immediately started teaching in Sioux Falls. She was passionate about teaching and loved her students. Annette married Ron Randall, also from Dell Rapids on Dec 26th 1964 at First Baptist Church. Ron and Annette adopted and raised two children, Troy and Nicole who grew up with a caring mother who always made time when needed.

Annette developed early signs of Alzheimer’s around 2000. Ron took care of her until his passing in 2008. The Randall’s were married for 44 years.

She is survived by her son Troy, his wife, Robin and grandchildren, Noah and Luke of Dell Rapids; her daughter, Nicole Ingram, her husband, Trae and grandchildren, Ashlyn, Curran, Blayne and Seaton of Johnston, Iowa; her sisters, Lucinda “Cindy” Anderson of McAllen,TX and Janette (Gary) Casperson of Birmingham, AL.

Annette was preceded in death by her parents and husband, Ron.

Annette was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and teacher. She loved the Lord and wasn’t afraid to let anyone know. She was proud of her children and didn’t mind embarrassing them in public. She loved music, regularly playing the piano and singing in the church choir.  She was always singing around the house and music made her happy even at the end of her life.

Marlayne “Monnie” Fokken

Monnie FokkenMarlayne “Monnie” Fokken, 68, of Sioux Falls, SD passed away Tuesday, December 29, 2015. The family will greet friends from 2:00 pm- 4:00 pm Friday, January 1, 2016 at Miller Funeral Home-Downtown, 507 S. Main Ave. A memorial service will be 11:00 am Saturday, January 2, at First Lutheran Church, 327 S. Dakota Ave. Condolences may be left at Miller Funeral Home.

Marlayne Berniece Lerdal, daughter of Morris and Berniece (Quissell) Lerdal, was born October 9, 1947 in Sioux Falls, SD. She grew up on the family farm northeast of Dell Rapids, SD and she graduated from Dell Rapids High in 1966. Monnie then worked at the National Bank of South Dakota in Sioux Falls.

On April 26, 1969 she was united in marriage to Michael Fokken at First Lutheran Church in Sioux Falls. Monnie then focused her life on being a homemaker where the couple was blessed with three children, Tricia, Scott, and Andrea. In 1972 the family moved to Elk Point, SD, where she operated a home daycare while the kids were growing up.

She was her children’s greatest fan for all their activities and their racing. Monnie later worked at the Pioneer Drug in Elk Point and with the Union County Abstract Company.

The family moved to Sioux Falls in 1997 where they started their own business, Impact Enterprises and Impact Auto Works, where Monnie served as office manager. They sold the business in 2009 and she later began working for the Carroll Institute as the initial screener. She retired in 2012 due to ill health with COPD.

Monnie was a huge fan of her family’s sprint car racing career. Scott was the driver, the rest of the family was the pit crew and she was the “Race Family Boss”. She also took great joy in creating a bird sanctuary in the ponderosa pines around their home.

Grateful for having shared her life are her husband Michael; her children, Tricia Erickson, Beresford, SD, Scott, Sioux Falls, and Andrea (Luke) McCorkindale, Laurel, NE; her grandchildren, Hesston and Macey Erickson, Molly, Mallory and Miranda Fokken, and Berniece, Hattie, and Myrtie McCorkindale. She is also survived by her sister, Illynne Auseth, Sioux Falls; her mother in-law, Patricia Fokken, Sioux Falls; her brothers and sisters in-law, Dennis (MaryBeth) Fokken, Yankton, SD, Mary Griffith, Sioux Falls, Stephen (Rhonda) Fokken, Lexington, NE, Carol (Russell) Beard, Columbus, GA, Patrick (Neili) Fokken, Humboldt, SD; an aunt, Madeline Hatlestad, Sioux Falls, SD; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Morris and Berniece; and a sister Jolanne Lerdal, and father in-law, Oliver Fokken.

Carol J. Kroeger

Carol KroegerCarol J. Kroeger, 80, passed away Tuesday, December 29, 2015 at Sanford University Medical Center in Sioux Falls. She was born January 15, 1935 at Flandreau, SD to Ray and Edith (Sorensen) Rosheim. Carol attended school at Flandreau and Egan Public Schools. She grew up attending Lone Rock Lutheran Church. Carol married Thomas Kroeger on December 18, 1956 at Lake Benton, MN. She had a day care then worked for Dakota Industries, Viking Industries, Eaton Dakota, Bayliner in Pipestone and then Royal River Casino. Her husband preceded her in death on March 7, 1990. She moved to Sioux Falls in December 2014. Carol was a member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, WELCA, and enjoyed playing cards and traveling. Quilting, sewing, crocheting, and making lefse were her passions and family members as well as friends were given quilts and afghans. She gifted blue jean quilts to her granddaughters’ entire graduating class, and also donated quilts to Sanford Children’s Castle. Her lefse was famous in the area.

Carol is survived by three children, Dale (Brenda), Dell Rapids, Linda (Glen) Van Dyke, Billings, MT, Lori Kroeger, Dell Rapids, 18 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren, and a sister Dianne Lewis, Grantsburg, WI. Carol was preceded in death by her husband, parents, and two grandchildren, Chris and Brittany.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, January 2, 2016 at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, Flandreau, with burial in Union Cemetery. Visitation is from 5 – 7 p.m. Friday at Skroch Funeral Chapel, Flandreau. Condolences may be left at Skroch Funeral Home.

LaVonne Leitheiser

Funeral services will begin at 10:30 AM Saturday, January 2, 2016 at Willow Creek Lutheran Church, rural Dell Rapids. Visitation will be one hour before the service at the church. Condolences may be left at Minnehaha Funeral Home.

LaVonne was born January 21, 1941 at Hartford, South Dakota to parents, Clark and Bernadine (Maxvold) Gregg. At the age of four she moved with her family to a farm west of Baltic. She attended the Baltic School and later graduated from Lincoln High School. After education she continued to live in Sioux Falls

LaVonne was a waitress for Murray’s, Rentschler’s and Grandma Mac’s for 47 years and was honored by Gov. George S. Mickelson as Waitress of the Year in 1992. She enjoyed traveling, crafts and spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren.

Grateful for having shared her life are her children, Ricky (Erka) Leitheiser, Chester; Penny (Jeff) Peterson, Crooks; Terry (Monica) Leitheiser, Rapid City; and Christy (Jeff) Nelson, Brandon; nine grandchildren, Jeremy, Justin, Byamba, Stacy, Joshua, Jesse, Zach, Heather, and Daniel; seventeen great grandchildren; a sister, Audrey (Elden) Hilmoe, Dell Rapids.

She was preceded in death by her parents, step dad, Cliff Ottum, brothers, Donald and Charles Gregg and sister, Melva Dybedahl.

Marie Daugaard

Marie DaugaardMarie M. Daugaard, 99, of Canton, formerly of Sioux Falls, passed away on Thursday, December 24, 2015 at the Canton Good Samaritan Center. Her funeral service will begin at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, December 28, 2015 in the Kahler Funeral Home Chapel. Visitation will be one hour prior to the start of the service. Interment will be in the Dell Rapids Cemetery. Condolences may be left at Kahler Funeral Home.

Marie Margaurite Miller was born on July 24, 1916 the daughter of Peter and Kathyrn (Schreier) Miller. She attended St. Mary Catholic School in Alton, IA, graduating in 1932. She married Albert Daugaard on September 18, 1934 in Madison, SD. The couple made their home in Dell Rapids, SD. Marie was a postal clerk in Dell Rapids for over 27 years. She retired in 1972. In 1981, they moved to Sioux Falls. Albert died in 1988. Marie worked at Randall Food Market from 1990 – 2001. Marie sold Avon for a number of years. She moved to Trial Ridge in Sioux Falls in 2004 and the Canton Good Samaritan Center in 2008.

She was a member of the Lutheran Church of Dell Rapids, an associate member of Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Sioux Falls, the church circle, and NARFE (National Association of Retired Federal Employees).

She is preceded in death by three sisters and three brothers and her good friend, Romayne Wermers.

She is survived by her sister-in-law, Dot Miller of Portland, OR; many nieces and nephews and friend, Ralph Wermers.

Beverly Wolles

Beverly Wolles, 76, of Dell Rapids, passed away very suddenly on Tuesday, December 22, 2015 at the Avera Heart Hospital of South Dakota. Her Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, December 28, 2015 in St. Mary Catholic Church, Dell Rapids. Visitation with the family present will be from 2:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, December 27, 2015 in St. Mary Catholic Church. The Christian Wake service will begin at 4:00 p.m. on Sunday in the church. Condolences may be left at Kahler Funeral Home.

Beverly Jo Ann Pressler was born on March 28, 1939 to Antone “Tony” and Loretta Pressler in Hartford, SD. She attended grade school at St. Ann’s School in Humboldt and graduated from Humboldt High School in 1957. Three years later, she finished Nurse’s Training at McKennan Presentation School of Nursing in Sioux Falls. During her nursing career, she worked as an RN at McKennan Hospital, Dell Rapids Hospital, and Terrace Manor in Dell Rapids.

On June 24, 1961, Beverly was united in marriage to the love of her life, Roger Wolles. They lived west of Dell Rapids where they raised their five children on the family farm. In 1996, they moved to their current home in Dell Rapids.

Like her mother, Beverly was an excellent homemaker, noted for her cooking, baking, canning, and her immaculate housekeeping. She taught her children and grandchildren how to make apple pies, freeze sweet corn, and keep the muddy boots in the garage. As a devout Catholic, she was also a role model in her faith, always centering her life around Christ.

Grandma Bev was proud of and loved spending time with her 17 grandchildren and enjoyed attending their various activities near and far. She graciously made birthday cakes, signature banana bread, and peach cream dessert (sometimes even served for breakfast). Grandma Bev opened her home anytime for grandchildren and often provided a hot shower and breakfast after morning practices. She had a love for painting and sewing; each grandchild cherishes the memories of the annual pumpkin painting and his/her baby blanket and “quillow” made by Grandma.

Over the years, Beverly was active in various organizations such as Catholic Order of Foresters, St. Mary’s Altar Society, and the local Alzheimer’s Association. She spent many years as a Hospice Care Volunteer along with being editor of the county NFO Newsletter. Recently, she was a leader of the Friendship Bible Study.

Grateful for having shared her life is her husband Roger; children, Dave (Deb), Mike (Sherri), Tim (Stephanie) of Dell Rapids, Cathy (David) Cunningham of Frisco, CO, Ed (Teresa) of Dell Rapids; her grandchildren, Brittany (Eric) Feigen, Breanna, Jessica, Brooke, Gina, Kiley, Anna, Joey, Brandilyn, Lindsey, Kayla, Jackie, Wyatt, Clay, Nick, Landon, Cami; her great-grandchildren, Adalyn and Tori; her siblings, Jo Redlin of Arroyo Grande, CA, Larry (Harriet) Pressler of Sioux Falls and Washington DC, and Sandy (Cory) Patterson of Butte, MT.

Beverly was preceded in death by her parents Antone and Loretta Pressler, and brother, Daniel.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to St. Mary School.

Joe “JP” Burggraff

Joe “J.P.” Burggraff passed away on Friday, December 18, 2015. His Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, December 23, 2015 at St. Joseph the Workman Catholic Church at Huntimer. Visitation on Tuesday will be from 1:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. at Kahler Funeral Home in Dell Rapids and will resume at the church at 5:00 p.m. The Christian Wake Service will begin at 7:00 p.m. in the church. Condolences may be left at Kahler Funeral Home.

Joe “J.P.” Burggraff was born on July 11, 1929 at the family farm near Hartford. He attended country school through eight grades near Hartford and then started farming with his family. He was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1952 and served during the Korean War. He was honorably discharged in 1955. He married Alice “Hun” Penning on June 2, 1954 at the St. Mary Catholic Church in Dell Rapids. The couple made their home on a farm near Hartford until 1958, when they moved to their farm near Colton. He retired in 1999 and continued to help out around the farm.

He was a member of St. Joseph the Workman Catholic Church and the Dell Rapids American Legion Post. He served on the Colton Elevator Board, where he was a past president, the Burke Township Board, and the church council for many years.

J.P. enjoyed his children, woodworking, welding and building many things. He played the accordion for many house parties and dances. He loved dancing and old time music.

J.P. was preceded in death by his sons, Jason, John, and Teddy; and daughter, Elizabeth; and one brother.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Alice “Hun” Penning of Colton; his children, Ginger Ellis of Newport News, VA, Randy (Sheila) of Round Mountain, NV, Lee (Melanie) of Dell Rapids, Jo (Kyle) Olson of Blackhawk, Bernie Taylor of Newport News, VA, Justin (Alvina) of Sturgis, Mary (Joe) Bohlman of Belle Fourche, Charlie (Bobbie) of Colton, Willson (Alesha) of Monticello, MN, Anita (Wayne) Tidemann of Rapid City, Wade of Colton, Josh (Melissa) of Colton, and Christy (Anthony) Oberg of Colton; his 46 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren; his two brothers and two sisters; and many nieces and nephews.
