Dave Peterson

David (Dave) Richard Peterson passed away January 18th, 2016 at his home in Biloxi, MS after a courageous battle with cancer. A celebration of his life was held January 23, 2016 in Biloxi, MS.

David was born in Dell Rapids, SD on April 16, 1937 to Hollie and Margaret (Briley) Peterson. He graduated from Dell Rapids High School, joined the navy for 4 years, worked with Gene Marcher in his body shop until he purchased the business and it became Dells Body Shop for 20 years. He went to work for Chief Automotive Technology until his retirement.

Dave had a real passion and zest for life. Everyone he met experienced his humorous and adventurous approach to life. He loved to travel, always looking for the next adventure. His love for boating and being around the water nourished his spirit.

He is survived by his wife of 28 years, Sandra Hollida Peterson; 3 children: daughter, Nanette (Darren) Billings of Little Rock, AR; his son, Joel (Theresa) of Ft. Collins, CO; his son, Greg (Jennifer) of Tulsa OK; 5 grandchildren and 1 soon to be great grandchild. He is also survived by his brother, Robert (Lee) of Paoli, Indiana; his brother, Jack of St. Petersburg, FL; and sister, Beth (Marvin) Nelsen of Sioux Falls, SD.

Jean Hirning

Jean Wilmarth (Reynolds) Hirning, 90, passed away Dec. 14, 2015, at Rapid City Regional Hospital Auxiliary Hospice House. She was born Sept. 28, 1925, in Lead to Harry B. and Edna (Wilmarth) Reynolds. She was educated during her primary grades in a one-room school house in Terraville, and graduated from Lead High School in 1943. She attended Dakota Wesleyan University in Mitchell, graduating in 1946 with Bachelor’s Degrees in English and Education.

On June 16, 1946, she was united in marriage to John Herbert Hirning at the Methodist Church in Lead. Following their marriage they made their home in Dell Rapids, until moving to Rapid City in 1953.

She is survived by her six children: two sons, John C. of Rapid City and David of Black Hawk; four daughters, Robin Peterson and her friend, Dan Gerg, of Eugene, OR, Bonnie Kroeger of Rapid City, Mary Taylor and her husband, Kim, of Black Hawk, and Sally Tate and her husband, Anthony, of Santa Ana, CA; nine grandchildren: Richard Kroeger, Kevin Peterson, Ryan Peterson, Christy Land, Kara Taylor, Christopher Taylor, Jonathan Tate, AnnMarie Tate, and Emily Tate; and six great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, John; her parents; two sisters, Helen Tysell and Ruth M. Reynolds; son-in-law, Daryl Peterson; and David’s longtime companion, Paula Kirchgasler.

Services were held on Saturday, Dec. 19, at the First United Methodist Church in Rapid City with the Rev. Greg Kroger officiating. Private inurnment services will be at a later date at Pine Lawn Memorial Park. On-Line Condolences may be left at Osheim & Schmidt Funeral Home.

Tim Brooks

Timothy Randall Brooks was born on January 25, 1949 to Ora Elvin Jr. and Bonnie Jean (Galloway) Brooks in Orange County, California. Tim was raised and received his education in Orange County graduating in 1967. Following his education, he enlisted in the United States Army where he served in the Vietnam War. After 8 years of service, he was honorably discharged. After his service, he made his way to Texas where he worked in the oil fields. After a time, Tim took classes to become a certified Nurse Assistant. He worked at several nursing homes in many different states. While working at a nursing home in Garretson, South Dakota, he met Sharon Wold. They were married on June 7, 2007 at the Jasper Evangelical Lutheran Church in Jasper, Minnesota. They made their home in Jasper. In 2009, Tim began working at HIS in Luverne, Minnesota until his health forced him into retirement in 2010. On December 31, 2015, Tim was admitted to the Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, South Dakota until his death on Saturday, January 02, 2016 at the age of 66 years, 11 months and eight days.

Tim was a member of the Jasper Evangelical Lutheran Church. He was an avid football fan, his favorite teams being the Kansas City Chiefs, the Chicago Bears and the Green Bay Packers. Tim also enjoyed fishing and watching TV, mostly black and white classics and John Wayne Westerns. He liked to cook, especially breakfast foods. Most importantly, Tim enjoyed spending time with his family.

Tim is lovingly remembered by his wife, Sharon of Jasper; children, Ricky (Jamie) Snoozy of Baltic, South Dakota, Sarah (Chad) Fodness of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Lois (Lance) Bryan of Dell Rapids, South Dakota, Robert (Angie) Snoozy of Coleman, South Dakota, Lori (Tyler) Joppa of Baltic, Sonya (Frank) Schmidt of Sioux Falls, and April (Dylan Joppa) Snoozy of Washington; 11 grandchildren; mother and father-in-law, Bernus (Warren) Lee of Arlington, South Dakota; sisters and brothers-in-law, James (Dawne) Wold of Mitchell, South Dakota, Larry Wold of Minneapolis, Minnesota, and Linda Howard of Sioux Falls; and several nieces and nephews. Bobby Coats

Vivian Jones

Vivian F. Wiseman was born January 9, 1921, at Woonsocket, SD, to Austin and Ellen (Fors) Wiseman. She attended Eastern High School in Madison and was confirmed at Castleton, ND where she graduated from Castleton High School. Vivian married Leo Jones on December 31, 1938, at Madison and attended Nettleton College in Sioux Falls. They lived in Madison and later moved to Seattle, WA where she owned and operated a restaurant in Burien, WA. They returned to Madison and she was a bookkeeper for her husband’s business, Leo Jones Trucking.

Vivian was a member of St. John Lutheran Church and WELCA, Madison, VFW Auxiliary, Sons of Norway, and Red Hat Society. She loved to sew and did alterations for many years.

Vivian was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Leo in 1994; three brothers, Everett, Dean and Dale Wiseman.

Survivors include two daughters, Nancy (Jerome) Lammers of Madison and Gloria (Allen) Brown of Dell Rapids; four grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; one sister, Donna Smith of Glenwood, IA; three brothers, Arlen Wiseman of Renton, WA, Calvin (Joyce) Wiseman of Seattle, WA, and Maynard Wiseman of Madison.

Jean (Class) Devlin

Jean A. (Class) Devlin, daughter of John T. and Eleanor (Cuff) was born on December 26, 1930 in New Effington, SD and passed away on January 7, 2016 in Sioux Falls, SD. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at the Cathedral of St. Joseph on Monday, January 11 at 10:30 a.m. There will be visitation at Miller Funeral Home Downtown beginning at 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 10 with a Liturgical Wake Service at 7:00. After moving to Sioux Falls as a teenager, Jean graduated from Cathedral High School in 1948. She married John B. Devlin on April 22, 1955 in Sioux Falls. After her children had grown, she went back to school and studied to be a nurse. She worked at both Sioux Valley and McKennan Hospitals, and as a home care nurse until her retirement. She was a member of St. Joseph Cathedral Parish and sang in the funeral choir for many years. Jean loved cooking, family gatherings, and wedding dances. Most of all, however, she adored each of her grandchildren.

Jean dedicated her life to caring for others. Professionally, she trained as a nurse where she worked diligently to ensure the health of the inflicted. Personally, she cared for her family and her community. A “North End mother,” Jean opened her home to children from the entire neighborhood, and she watched out for everyone. Maternal and loving, she dressed scrapes and cuts, and kissed many bruises. Her love did not stop there, as she always made sure that everyone was properly fed, too. Simply put, Jean absolutely loved caring for others.

She will be greatly missed by her husband; her five children, Tim (Lynn), John (Mary), Dan (Jill), all of Sioux Falls, Mary Zakrzewski of O’Neill, NE, and Vince (Julie) of Dell Rapids; grandchildren, Beau Devlin, Ben Devlin, Bridget A. O’Toole, John F. Devlin, Dustin Devlin, Stacy Devlin, Sarah Devlin, Jean Zakrzewski, Paula Zakrzewski, Jeff Devlin, Michelle Devlin, and Rachel Devlin; and 13 great-grandchildren; her brother, John “Jack” Class of Kingman, AZ and her sister, Judy (Thomas) Coleman of Baltimore, MD. She was preceded in death by her parents; siblings, Jim, Joyce and Joe; an infant sister, June; her son-in-law Dave; and two great-grandchildren, Boston and Jeff.

Esther Ausman

Esther Ausman, 96 of Dell Rapids passed away on Tuesday, January 5, 2016 at the Dells Nursing and Rehab Center. Her Funeral Service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 9, 2016 in the Lutheran Church of Dell Rapids Chapel. Visitation on Friday will be held in the Lutheran Church of Dell Rapids Chapel and will begin at 4:00 p.m. The family will be present to greet friends from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. On-Line Condolences may be left at Kahler Funeral Home.

Esther Johnson was born on October 14, 1919 at Craig, Iowa, the daughter of Harm and Gertie (Frerichs) Johnson. When she was two, she moved to Dell Rapids with her family. She grew up near Dell Rapids and attended country school. Esther married Henry Ausman on January 12, 1940 in Dell Rapids. They made their home on their farm near Dell Rapids for 42 years. They moved into town in 1979. Henry passed away in 1981. Esther worked at the Odd Fellows Nursing Home for ten years and then, retired. She has been a resident of the Dells Nursing and Rehab Center for ten years.

Esther was a member of the Lutheran Church of Dell Rapids and Women of ELCA, the Rebekah Lodge, the Hospital Auxiliary, and the Dell Rapids Senior Citizens. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Russell.

Those left to cherish her memory are her son, Jerry Ausman of Fresno, CA and her grandchildren, Jason Ausman and Julie Stofferahn, and six great-grandchildren.

Marguerite “Tootie” Chamley

Marguerite “Tootie” E. Chamley, 97, passed away Monday, January 4, 2016 at Riverview Healthcare Community, Flandreau. She was born June 19, 1918 in rural Flandreau, SD to Oswald and Grace (Davis) Headrick. Marguerite went to Egan High School. She married Russell “Bud” Chamley on September 4, 1936 at Howard, SD. They lived in Egan and Bud preceded her in death December 16, 1972.

Tootie worked at the Egan School in the lunchroom and then worked for Green Thumb for 18 years. She continued to live in Egan until she became a resident at Greenleaf Assisted Living in Flandreau and then Riverview Manor in 2012. Tootie was a member of Egan United Methodist Church, UMW, LCA, and Egan Senior Citizens. She volunteered at Riverview and enjoyed Twins baseball, playing cards, and coffee day at Senior Citizens.

Tootie is survived by four sons, Don (Joy), Egan, Bob, Dell Rapids, Wayne, Onaga, KS, Larry (Denise), Onaga, KS, four daughters, Joyce (Butch) Britton, Flandreau, Diane (Jerome) Olson, Egan, Carol (David) Smith, Flandreau, Debbie Behrens and Steve, Holiday Island, AR, 25 grandchildren, many great and great-great-grandchildren, and best friend Dorothy Reed. Tootie was preceded in death by her husband, son Richard, grandson Lincoln, parents and two brothers, Bud and Dean.

Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m. Friday, January 8, 2016 at Egan United Methodist Church with burial at Hillside Cemetery, Egan. Visitation is from 5 – 7 p.m. Thursday at Skroch Funeral Chapel, Flandreau, with a 7 p.m. prayer service. On-Line Condolences may be left at Skroch Funeral Home.

Gary Ellefson

Gary Ellefson, 64, of Dell Rapids passed away suddenly on Sunday, January 3, 2016 at the Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls. His funeral service will begin at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, January 9, 2016 in the Lutheran Church of Dell Rapids. Visitation on Friday, January 8, 2016 will begin at noon at Kahler Funeral Home with the family present from 5:00 p.m.- 7:00 p.m. On-Line Condolences may be left at Kahler Funeral Home.

Gary Leroy Ellefson was born on July 26, 1951 to Harvey and Mabel Ellefson. Gary attended Dell Rapids Public High School and was active in baseball, basketball, track and football. He earned several ribbons, medals, trophies, and varsity letters during his high school career. He graduated in 1970.

Gary loved the game of baseball. He was a pitcher for the Dell Rapids American Legion baseball team. It was common for him to be picked up by area baseball clubs during tournament time, which led to state championship titles. In 1970, the Cincinnati Reds drafted Gary as a right handed pitcher in the second phase of the winter draft. Gary refused to sign the contract and continued playing baseball locally. He attended his first and only major league baseball game at the Kansas City Royals in 2014.

Gary was drafted into the United States Army in 1971. He completed basic training at Fort Lewis, WA and received an Honorable Discharge in 1973.

Gary was employed by Buskerud Construction and Dells Materials for the last 36 years. Even at the time of his death, he was still employed part time. Gary enjoyed hunting, attending his grandchildren’s sporting events. He was easy going and well liked, always willing to visit and help anyone.

Gary died January 3, 2016 at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls after a short battle with cancer. He was 64 years old at the time of his death. Gary was preceded in death by his father, Harvey Ellefson. He was a member of the Lutheran Church of Dell Rapids.

Those left to cherish his memory are his fiancé and love of his life for the last 15 years, Cathy Frantzen; his mother, Mabel Ellefson of Dell Rapids; his sister, Cherlyn (Duane) Overvaag of Watertown; his daughter, Kelli (Mike) Baumberger of Colman; his sons, Matt Ellefson of Dell Rapids, Seth Ellefson of Sioux Falls and Eric (Louise) Halbleib of Kansas City; his grandchildren Olivia, Levi, Avery, Lucy, and Harvey; and many nieces and nephews.

Laura Garness

Laura Elaine Garness, 54, of Baltic, died Sunday, January 3, 2016 at Covington Heights in Sioux Falls, SD. Laura Elaine (Myers) Garness was born in Ortonville, MN on December 16, 1961; the second child of William and Virginia (Thronson) Myers. Laura lived in Milbank, SD and graduated from Milbank HS in 1980. She studied at Concordia College in Moorhead, MN from 1980-1982. She then lived in Sioux Falls, SD and attended Stenotype Institute. She moved to Baltic, SD in 1987. Her son Dustin Kirby Garness was born in 1988.

Laura was employed as a manager at First Premier Bank in Dell Rapids, and then worked at home as a medical transcriptionist. She loved her job for the Baltic School District as a para-professional and a bus driver for special needs children. While in Baltic she opened her home to many foster children.

Laura was an active member of Christ Fellowship Church and founded the Baltic Community Garden.

Laura was preceded in death by her father William Francis Myers.

She is survived by son, Dustin Garness and wife Hezel, Hartford, SD; mother, Virginia Myers, Custer, SD, brother, William A. Myers and wife Suzanne Keithley-Myers, Duluth, MN; sister, Carla Brown and husband Joseph, Gretna, NE; sister, Deborah Vigants and husband Peter, Brandon, SD; 4 nieces, 9 nephews, 2 grand-nieces, and 1 grand-nephew.
