Myrtle (Schreier) Duffy

July 3, 2016 by Matt Larson, Big Sioux Media

Myrtle DuffyMyrtle Laura Duffy (nee Schreier), age 92, passed away on June 28, 2016 at home, in the company of her children. Myrtle was born on May 14, 1924 in Dell Rapids, South Dakota.

Beginning life a shy farm girl, she met her life’s challenges with courage and tenacity and hard work. Her marriage was a love match that ended too soon with the death of her husband Charles after only 38 years.

Driven by faith and compassion, she dedicated herself to good works of all kinds. First out of necessity and then out of a need to create and to give, Myrtle made sweaters with complex designs, sewed garments of all kinds (including wedding dresses and tailored jackets), prepared entire banquets, baked dozens and dozens of Christmas cookies, pies and rolls, and of course, constructed the quilts. Her enthusiasm overtook her shyness as she led friends in traveling expeditions and organized the St. John’s quilting group. She took pride in being Irish, and derived great joy from holding babies and picking berries. Myrtle was fierce in the face of injustice and unbowed by adversity.

Preceded in death by infant son, husband Charles, grandson Christopher Mattis, and great-grandson Zayden Mattis. Survived by children and their spouses: Donna and Alan Mattis, Barbara (Duffy) and Robert Borchert and Kevin and Colleen Duffy; 11 grandchildren, Lori (Tom) Mattis Stevens, Mollie Mattis, Katie (Casey) Sarver, Scott (Anne) Mattis, Rebecca Mattis, Tim (Sabrina) Mattis, Mara (Chris) Meyer, John Borchert, Laura (Erik Peter) Walker, Charles (Cole) Borchert, and Willson (Stephanie) Borchert; 11 great-grandchildren, Benjamin Stevens, Christopher Adams, Adeline Mattis, Amelia Mattis, Ruby Mattis, Mila Sarver, Luca Sarver, Krystal Mattis, Viola Walker, Solen Walker, and Tycho Borchert; brother and spouse, Jerry and Clara Schreier and many beloved nieces and nephews.

Urban Schwebach

June 20, 2016 by Matt Larson, Big Sioux Media

Urban SchwebachUrban August Schwebach left this life as he lived it, with ferocity to stay with family, friends and the farm. He lost his battle with renal failure and congestive heart failure the day before Father’s Day which somehow seems fitting as he was a great husband, father and grandfather. Urban or “Urb”, as he was known, was born on June 9, 1927 at Dell Rapids, SD to Joseph and Anna (Kottman) Schwebach.

He received his education at St. Mary’s School in Dell Rapids. After completing the eighth grade he was off to begin doing what he loved most, farming and hard work. He met the true love of his life, Rosemary Thielsen, and they were married on October 1, 1952 at Ss. Simon and Jude Catholic Church in Flandreau. They began farming southeast of Flandreau and in the spring of 1960 purchased a farm northeast of Flandreau where they have continued to live. Urb was a true entrepreneur and started several businesses to compliment the highs and lows of farming. He did custom corn shelling, combining, and he was most known for stack moving and hay grinding. He turned the hay grinding business over to one of his sons. The farming tradition continues to be carried on by his other son. Urb enjoyed working the ground, was happy when in a tractor and most happy when surrounded by family. Raising cattle – raising sheep – raising crops – raising his family: that was Urb, happy and hardworking. Urb was a member of Ss. Simon and Jude Catholic Church.

Urb is survived by his wife Rosemary, 3 children; Joe (Mary) Schwebach, Flandreau; Linda Schwebach, Flandreau; Tom (Marilyn) Schwebach, Egan; 4 grandchildren, Nicole, Alyson and Jared Schwebach, and Elizabeth (Nikolay) Typhina, 1 great-grandchild, Felix; 4 sisters, Mary Ann Loiseau, Egan; Helen Hattervig, Dell Rapids; Joan Brown, Summersville, WV; and Clare Hubert, Long Island, NY. He was preceded in death by his parents, 2 sisters, Isabella Schmidt and Cordula Williamson and a brother Joseph.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, June, 23, 2016 at Ss. Simon and Jude Catholic Church with burial in the church cemetery. Visitation will be Wednesday from 4:00 – 7:00 pm with a 7:00 pm Rosary at Skroch Funeral Chapel. On-line condolences may be left at Skroch Funeral Chapel.
