Mona Robinette

mona-robinetteMona Marie (Ischen) Robinette, 62, died Friday, December 9th, 2016, at the Sioux Falls VA Medical Center following a short, but courageous battle with cancer. Mona had a Living Funeral on her birthday, for her memorial service. She was born in Mitchell, SD to Fred and Esther (Gullickson) Ischen on November 3rd, 1954. Mona spent her childhood on her family’s farmstead in rural Fedora and attended school in Carthage, SD until her senior year of high school, at which time she attended Howard High School, graduating in 1972. Mona enlisted in the United States Army in 1978 and served her country as an active service member until January of 1993. During her service in the Army she earned numerous ribbons, badges and medals, including: Army Service Ribbon; National Defense Service Medal; Army Good Conduct Medal; Meritorious Service Medal; Army Achievement Medal; Overseas Service Medal; Marksmanship Badge (M-16 & Hand Grenade); & Army Commendation Medal.

Following her military career she worked in the office of the Miner County Community Health Nurse in Howard. In 1996, she went on to work at the Sioux Falls VA Medical Center as an Administrative Officer, retiring in 2008. Following her retirement, she moved to Carthage and there found a rewarding life as an active member of the community.

Mona enjoyed many hobbies, including coin collecting and gardening. Her favorite quote was “May I never miss a sunset or a rainbow because I am looking down.”

Grateful for having shared Mona’s life are her daughter, Chauntee (Ted) Hosselkus (Spearfish); granddaughter, Maggie Hosselkus (Spearfish); mother, Esther Ischen (Fedora); special friend, Mike Weaver (Carthage); cousin, Wayne Westerberg (Madison); cousin, Linda (Joe) Lidington (Allenton, WI); friend, Susie Stahl (Freeman); aunt, Mary Carol Der Hagopian (Dell Rapids); sister, Ruth Ischen (Fedora); & countless family and friends across the United States and around the world. Mona was preceded in death by her father, Fred K. Ischen in 1991 and her beloved aunt Mary Westerberg in 1996.

Nita Heinemann

nita-heinemanNita J. Heinemann, 83, of Dell Rapids, passed away on Sunday, December 11, 2016 at the Dells Nursing and Rehab Center. Her Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, December 14, 2016 in St. Mary Catholic Church, Dell Rapids. Visitation will begin at noon on Tuesday, December 13, 2016 at Kahler Funeral Home with the family present at 5:00 p.m. The Christian Wake Service will begin at 7:00 p.m. with a family rosary to follow.  On-line condolences may be left at the Kahler Funeral Home website.

Nita was born on June 28, 1933 on a farm near Baltic, SD, the daughter of Oscar and Alice (Brobjorg) Oien. She grew up on a farm near Baltic and attended school in Baltic. After high school she waitressed at the Dells Cafe. She married Arnie Heinemann on November 5, 1953 at St. Mary Catholic Church in Dell Rapids. The couple made their home in Dell Rapids and later moved to a farm west of Dell Rapids. When Arnie started farming with his father, the couple moved to the Heinemann farm. They remained there until moving into Dell Rapids shortly after retiring.

Nita was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church and Altar Society. She enjoyed family time, fishing, camping and doing crossword puzzles. She is preceded in death by her parents, her stepfather, her stepbrother and her stepsister.

Nita is survived by her husband of 63 years, Arnie Heinemann of Dell Rapids; her five children, Deb (Tony) Sorg of Trent, Connie (Jerry) Weniger of Sioux Falls, Steve (Karen) Heinemann of Baltic, Larry (Kay) Heinemann of Custer and Peg (Bob) Ellwein of Dell Rapids; her nine grandchildren and soon to be 17 great grandchildren; her brother, Iver (Judy) Oien of Baltic and her sisters, Ardis Warwick of Sioux Falls and Janice (Richard) Wehde of Floresville, TX.

Hayden Wigton

Ervin “Erv” Walters

erv-waltersErvin “Erv” Walters, 70, died Monday, December 5, 2016 in Sioux Falls, SD. A memorial service will be 10:00 AM Friday December 9, 2016 at George Boom Funeral Home in Sioux Falls, SD. His family will be present for visitation from 5:00-7:00 PM Thursday December 8 at George Boom Funeral Home in Sioux Falls, SD. Ervin Ray Walters was born April 20, 1946 in Luverne, MN to George and Grace (Groen) Walters. He grew up in Beaver Creek, MN. After his high school graduation, he served in the National Guard and was active duty in Luverne, MN.

Erv had various jobs in the Sioux Falls area. He settled in at Metz Old Home Bakery and retired after 28 years. In 1999 he purchased the Hi-Ho Tavern with his brother, George. Erv was there every day until ill health forced him to retire. He has fought cancer since 2009.

He married Kathy Gieselman on May 20, 2005 in Sioux Falls, SD.  Erv had the gift of gab and loved telling jokes and stories about his adventurous life. He was always there when someone needed a helping hand. He had a love for living life to the fullest. He enjoyed spending time with his grandkids and family.

Erv is survived by his wife, Kathy, Sioux Falls, SD; son, Aaron Walters, Sioux Falls, SD; daughter, Carrie (Jesse) Boysen, Larchwood, IA; his grandchildren, Tessa Boysen, Grady Boysen, Charles Binkerd and Dylan Boysen; sister, Aleida Kruger, Sheldon, IA; brothers, Dick (Doris) Walters, Sioux Falls, SD, Ed (Lavonne) Walters, Effie, MN, Glen (Norma) Walters, Sioux Falls, SD, George (Donna) Walters, Madison, SD, Joe Walters, Red Oak, TX, Darrel (Marge) Walters, Sioux Falls, SD, Alvin (Joy) Walters, Desoto, TX, Arvin (LaDonna Talenda) Walters, Zion, IL and Ron (Sandy) Walters, Hutchinson, MN; sister-in-law, Judy Walters, Dell Rapids, SD; and many nieces, nephews, in-laws and friends.

He was preceded in death by his son, Jason Gieselman; his parents, George and Grace; brothers, Henry and Leslie Walters; sisters-in-law, Daisy and Susan; and brother-in-law, Merle Kruger.

Alvin Story

Alvin was born August 5, 1936 in Ihlen, MN to Irvin and Florence (Clark) Story. He met Audrey Johnson on a blind date and they were married in Naples, SD on October 27, 1962.

Alvin liked to stay busy. Over the years, he worked as a truck driver, drove mail trucks, farmed in the Madison, SD area and worked for Sioux Steel, Polar Storage and Nordica Warehouse. His home kept him busy as well, there was always something to fix or build. He was a handyman and Mr. Fix It and spent lots of time working on his cars. He enjoyed listening, often loudly, to the oldies on the radio or on vinyl.

Alvin is survived by his wife, Audrey, Sioux Falls, SD; his children, Stan (Julie) Story, Bridgewater, SD, Dawn (Kurt) Kruger, Sioux Falls, SD and Jeff Story, Sioux Falls, SD; his grandchildren, Kyle Kruger, Seth Story, Cody Story, Alicia Kruger, Zane Story and Tate Story; 4 great-grandchildren; brothers, Jim Story, Hartford, SD and John (Vicki) Story, Dell Rapids, SD; and his sister, Pam (Steve) Linnewebber, Sioux Falls, SD. He was preceded in death by his son, Steven Story; his parents, Irvin and Florence Story; and his sister, Mary Dean Turner.

Vonnie (Ney) Schneider

vonnie-schneiderYvonne “Vonnie” M. Schneider, 83, of Brandon, passed away on Sunday, December 4, 2016 at the Bethany Lutheran Home in Brandon. Her funeral service will begin at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, December 10, 2016 in Highland Lutheran Church, rural Sherman. Visitation will be from 3:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. with the family present from 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. on Friday, December 9, 2016 at Kahler Funeral Home. Yvonne “Vonnie” Marie Ney was born on February 8, 1933 in Sheldon, Iowa to Peter and Marie Ney. At the age of 11 months, Vonnie’s father passed away. Vonnie and her mother then moved to Dell Rapids, South Dakota where Vonnie attended St. Mary’s Catholic schools, graduating in 1951. During and after high school Vonnie worked at Voy’s Drug Store.

On January 24, 1954 Vonnie was united in marriage to Edward J. Schneider at First Lutheran Church in Sherman, South Dakota. Following their marriage, Ed and Vonnie lived on the Schneider family farm, rural Sherman. To this union, four children were born, Gretchen, Brian, Elizabeth and David. Along with all of the duties that come along with being a mother of four, Vonnie was very involved in helping Ed with the daily farm activities. This included milking, tending to the animals, and preparing meals for those helping with the labor on the farm. Vonnie especially enjoyed the dairy cows, baby calves, and cattle.   After Ed’s passing in 1990, Vonnie continued to live on the farm enjoying the outdoors, her little dog Ralph, and her family, friends, and grandchildren. She was also a member of Highland Lutheran Church and the ladies’ aide there. In 2002 Vonnie moved to Orchard Hills in Dell Rapids, South Dakota until 2009 when she moved to the Inn on Westport, SiouxFalls, South Dakota. In August of 2011, Vonnie moved to The Bethany Home in Brandon, South Dakota, residing there until the time of her death on December 4, 2016.   Vonnie reached the age of 83 years, 9 months, and 26 days. She was preceded in death by her father Peter Ney, her mother Marie Olson, her step-father Russell Olson, and her husband Edward Schneider.

Those left to cherish her memory are her children, Gretchen (Michael) Dickes of Mesa, AZ, Brian (Dawn) Schneider of Pipestone, MN, Liz (Jason) Hiemstra of Sioux Falls, SD and David (LeAnn) Schneider of Sioux Falls, SD. Grandchildren, Sara (John) Rout of Gilbert, AZ, Andrew (Kelly) Bauman of Ottawa, IL., Nicholas (Stephanie) Schneider of Greeley, CO, Samuel Schneider of Sherman, SD, Jacob Schneider of St. Paul, MN, Libby Schneider of Vermillion, SD, Marie (Nathan) Vanderlaan of Minneapolis, MN, Matthew (Kristina) Hiemstra of Key West, FL, Thomas Schneider of Brookings, SD and Michael Schneider of Sioux Falls, SD. Great grandchildren, Emma, Nicholas, Kaitlyn, Kaylee, and Landon. Her sister in law, Emily Schneider, and several cousins, nieces and nephews.

Heather (Graves) (Feuerhelm) Klein

Heather Marie Graves was born on January 9, 1973 at Dell Rapids, SD, the daughter of Doug and Susan (Halvorson) Graves. Her father passed away at a young age and her mother remarried Rodney Feuerhelm. Rodney adopted and helped raise her. She grew up in Trent and attended school in Flandreau, graduating from Flandreau High School in 1991. After high school Heather worked for Hutchinson Technology. She started dating Chris Klein in 1998 and the couple married in 1999. They made their home in Colton where the couple was blessed with two daughters, Gillian in 2001 and Elizabeth in 2004. While raising her children and working full time, Heather went back to college and received her degree in accounting. She helped her sister, Dulcy with raising Dulcy’s three children for a couple years. She then went to work for Duluth Trading Company in Sioux Falls.

Heather liked working on her garden and flower beds, doing puzzles, loved music and her hockey teams, the Pittsburg Penguins and Sioux Falls Stampede. She had a special place in her heart for her dog, Cooper.

She is survived by her husband, Chris of Colton; her daughters, Gillian and Elizabeth both at home; her mother, Susan Feuerhelm of Trent; her sister, Dulcy (Scott) Poppenga of Worthing; her brother, Kelly (Amber) Feuerhelm of Baltic; her nieces and nephews, Caden, Connor, Kaylee, Reese and Ryder; her in-laws, Don and Cheryl Klein of Dell Rapids; her brother-in-law, Jeff Sorensen of Melvin, IA and many other relatives.

She is preceded in death by her fathers; her sister-in-law, Stacey Sorensen; and both sets of paternal grandparents and her maternal grandparents.

Brayden Otto

brayden-ottoBrayden Otto, was taken from us unexpectedly on November 20, 2016, in Sioux Falls, SD. Brayden was born on March 26, 2009, in Sioux Falls, SD. He went to school at Dell Rapids Elementary. Brayden touched anyone’s life who came into contact with his beautiful smile and infectious laugh.

Brayden will be missed by his mother Cassie and his father Michael, Sioux Falls, SD; grandparents Darren Otto, Sparta, WI, Kim and Jerry Fry, Colman, SD, Guy Marcucci, Sioux Falls, SD; his aunt Aleesha and her husband DJ, Salem, SD; and many other relatives and friends.

Brayden was joined in heaven with his grandmother Carol Simon.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the family can be accepted at any First Premier Bank in Sioux Falls for Carol Simon and Grandson.

Visitation with the family present will be from 3 to 5 pm with a prayer service beginning at 4:30 pm on Sunday, November 27, 2016, at the Miller Southside Chapel, 7400 South Minnesota Avenue, Sioux Falls. Carol (Otto) Simon

carol-simonCarol Lynn Simon went home to the Lord on Sunday, November 20, 2016, at the age of 48 in Sioux Falls. Carol Lynn Simon was born in Faulkton, SD, on March 2, 1968, to Emil S. Simon and Ruth Wegner of Lovalton, SD. She attended school in the Ipswich Public School District and graduated from Ipswich High School in 1986.

She married Darren Otto at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Ipswich in 1988, they had three children, Aleesha, Cassandra, and Heath. Carol and Darren lived in Aberdeen, SD, for a time. Darren was deployed to serving in the Gulf War, Desert Storm, and Carol and the children lived with her parents on the family farm. Carol enrolled in the nursing program at Presentation College in Aberdeen and earned her Bachelor’s Degree in 1992. They divorced in 1994.

Carol LOVED nursing! She started her career at the Ipswich and Faulkton Hospitals and then in Sioux Falls. She joined a travelling nursing organization that took her to many communities. Tulsa, OK, and Tucumcari, NM. She took a position for a time with Centura Health in Holy Oak, CO, in 1998.

She returned to live in Ipswich and work in Aberdeen before moving to Sioux Falls. She began her lengthy career with the South Dakota Department of Corrections in 2002, and worked at the State Penitentiary in Sioux Falls until the time of her death.

Carol LOVED to learn. In March 2006, Carol attended the PSI Basic Seminar in Denver, CO. She went on to attend the Advanced Leadership Course (PSI 7 Class 443) in October of 2006 at High Valley Ranch in California and returned to the High Valley Ranch to participate in the Women’s Leadership Seminar C-95 in June 2007. She met many new friends. Carol also traveled to Denver to attend a Women of Faith Conference.

Carol LOVED her family and friends. She could always make people laugh! She met her significant other, Todd Mitzel in 2010, and he was the love of her life! Carol’s grandchildren: Ashtyn, Ella, Deacon, Zeke, and Brayden were her pride and joy. She enjoyed spoiling them and showering them with love.

Carol enjoyed working out at Pharrell’s and working with her Mary Kay associates. She was a member of the Quarry Rock Church in Dell Rapids, SD.

Carol was joined in heaven with her parents Emil J. and Ruth L. Simon, paternal grandparents Charles J. and Anna (Hamak) Simon and maternal grandparents Albert C. and Emma (Heil) Wegner, brother David Allen Simon and brother Richard Dean Simon, and her grandson Brayden.

Carol is survived by her three children Aleesha (DJ) DeKnikker, Salem, SD, Cassandra Otto, Sioux Falls, SD, and Heath Otto; four beloved grandchildren, Ashtyn, Ella, Deacon, and Zeke; eleven brothers and sisters, Mary (Ryc) Casati, Minneapolis, MN, Edward (Sue) Simon, Great Falls, MT, Jeanie (George) Zenanko, Maple Plain, MN, Roger (Julie) Simon, Congress, AZ, Deborah Simon, Phoenix, AZ, Shirley (John) Miller, Sun City West, AZ, Tony (Cindy) Simon, Ipswich, SD, Charlene (Arnie) Malsom, Thornton, CO, Tim (Jeanne) Simon, Black Hawk, SD, Denise (Chris) Chiavuzzi, Punta Gorda, FL, Ruth (Michael) Gibbons, Boise, ID; Wegner Aunts and Uncles; and many nieces, nephews, co-workers and friends.
