Cardinal Girls Drop Opening Game of DVC

DRSM LogoThe Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal girls dropped their opening-round game of the Dakota Valley Conference tournament to the Elkton/Lake Benton Elks 45-26 on Tuesday, January 19th, at Dell Rapids St Mary High School.

The Cardinals opened up the game with an early 4-2 lead in the first minute of the game, but the Elks out scored the Cardinals 10-2 the rest of the first quarter to take a 12-6 lead at the first break.  Elkton/Lake Benton then held St Mary to just two points in the second quarter to extend their lead to 27-8 at halftime.

St Mary’s defense held the Elks to just four points in third quarter, and the Cardinals closed the gap to 31-18 by the end of the third quarter.  The Cardinals cut the lead to 12 points a couple of times in the fourth quarter, but the Elks pulled away late in the game for the win.

The Cardinals finished the night shooting just 23% (8-35) from the field, 33% (2-6) from three-point area, and 80% (8-10) from the free-throw line.  St Mary had a total of 30 team rebounds, but turned the ball over 20 times.

Jackie Wolles finished the game with 14 points, two steals, and two rebounds in the game.  Sydney Cook had five points, four rebounds, and two assists.  Kennedi Mullaney tossed in four points and grabbed seven rebounds.  Lexi Klein had six rebounds.

The Cardinals (2-8) will play Colman/Egan in the consolation round of the DVC tournament on Friday, January 22nd, at St Mary High School.  The game can be seen on Big Sioux Media.

Cardinal Girls Fall Short in Canistota

DRSM LogoThe Canistota Hawks came from behind and defeated the Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal Girls 52-46 on Thursday, January 14th, in Canistota.  St Mary led 14-10 after the first quarter.  They extended their lead to 9 with 6:09 to go in the second quarter and led 26-19 at halftime.  Canistota outscored the Cardinals 14-8 in the third quarter, but St Mary still clung to a 34-33 lead heading into the fourth quarter.  The Hawks completed the come back by outscoring St Mary 19-12 for the win.

The Cardinals shot 40% (16-40) from the field, 60% (3-5) from three-point area, and 69% (11-16) from the free-throw line.  St Mary also out-rebounded the Hawks 34-23.  The Cardinals had 13 team assists, 10 steals, but turned the ball over 30 times.

Jackie Wolles had 14 points along with six rebounds in the game.  Sydney Cook finished with 12 points and seven rebounds.  Kennedi Mullaney added eight points, six rebounds, and six assists.  Cassy Geraets had four steals.

The Cardinals (2-7) will play the Colman-Egan Hawks in the opening around of the Dakota Valley Conference tournament on Tuesday, January 19th, at Dell Rapids St Mary High School.  The game can be seen on Big Sioux Media.

Cardinal Girls Hang on for Win

DRSM LogoThe Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal girls held a 29-14 lead at halftime and hung on for a 50-44 win over the Lake Preston Divers on Friday, January 8th, at Dell Rapids St Mary High School.

The Cardinals, who never trailed in the game, led 18-7 after the first quarter.  St Mary pushed their their lead to 17 points with 1:16 to go in the second quarter before heading into the locker room ahead by 15 points.  Lake Preston closed the gap in the third quarter to 39-30.  The Divers couldn’t complete the comeback in the fourth as the Cardinals hit enough free-throws down the stretch for the win.

St Mary shot 28% (16-57) from the field and were 71% (17-24) from the free-throw line.  Lake Preston finished the game shooting 30% (16-53) from the field and 60% (9-15) from the free-throw line.  The Cardinals out-rebounded the Divers 48-38 in the game.

Jackie Wolles led all scores with 23 points.  Lexi Klein added 10 points, and Kennedi Mullaney finished with eight points.  Sydney Cook pulled down 10 rebounds while Wolles and Mullaney each had seven.  Wolles and Cook both had three steals in the game as well.

The Cardinals (2-6) travel to Canistota on Thursday, January 14th.

Cardinal Girls Fall to Chester

DRSM LogoThe Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal girls couldn’t get past the Chester Area Flyers on Tuesday, January 5th, in Chester.  The Flyers defeated the Cardinals 56-30.

St Mary held a one-point lead with with 1:56 to go in the first quarter, but the Flyers would go on a run and end the quarter ahead 16-9.  Chester Area pushed the lead to 35-16 at halftime.  The Flyers continued to extend their lead in the second half by out-scoring St Mary 21-14 in the final two quarters.

The Cardinals finished the game shooting just 19% (8-42) from the field and 65% (15-23) from the free-throw line.  St Mary also had 31 team rebounds and turned the ball over 16 times.

Jackie Wolles ended the night with 12 points.  Lexi Klein added six points, and Abby Burkhart finished with five.  Cassy Geraets, Wolles, and Burkhart all finished with four rebounds apiece.  Klein had two assists, while Wolles had four steals.

St Mary (1-6) will host Lake Preston on Friday, January 8th, as part of a girls-boys double-header.  The games can be seen on Big Sioux Media.

Ipswich Hands Cardinal Girls Loss

DRSM LogoAfter trailing 7-0 in the first two minutes of the game, the Ipswich Tigers went on to beat the Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal girls 56-39 at the Swiftel Classic on Wednesday, December 3oth, in Brookings.

St Mary led 7-0 with 6:01 left in the first quarter, but Ipswich out-scored the Cardinals 15-3 the rest of the quarter to take a 15-10 lead.  The Tigers would not lose the lead.  Ipswich extended their lead to 31-18 at halftime.  The Tigers then led 43-29 at the end of the third quarter.

The Cardinals finished the game shooting 38% (16-42) from the field, 33% (1-3) from three-point area, and 60% (6-10) from the free-throw line.  St Mary out-rebounded the Tigers 39-30 in the game, but Ipswich forced 33 St Mary turnovers.

Jackie Wolles led St Mary with 12 points and four rebounds.  Kennedi Mullaney had 10 points and four rebounds.  Abby Burkhart added nine points, and Sydney Cook finished with five points.

St Mary (1-5) will travel to Chester to take on the Chester Area Flyers on Tuesday, January 5th.

Cardinal Boys Can’t Solve Deubrook Area

DRSM LogoThe Deubrook Area Dolphins used two big quarters to defeated the Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals on Tuesday, December 22nd, in White.

The Dolphins held the Cardinals to just six first quarter points and led 19-6 after the first quarter.  Deubrook Area only out scored the Cardinals by two in the second quarter, but they had a 33-16 lead at halftime.  Deubrook Area also had a big third quarter adding 14 points to their lead after out scoring the Cardinals 20-6.  The Dolphins led 53-24 at the end of the third quarter.  The Dolphins went on to win 67-35.

The Cardinals finished the game shooting 25% (13-52) from the field, 30% (3-12) from three-point area, and 43% (6-14) from the free-throw line.  St Mary had 31 team rebounds, seven assists, and three steals.

Luke Brown and Zach Geraets led St Mary in scoring with 10 points each.  Noah Fiegen finished with five points and eight rebounds.  Geraets also grabbed five rebounds.  Connor Libis had two steals and four assists.

The Cardinals (1-3) will face Oldham-Ramona/Rutland at the Entringer Classic in Brookings at 12:00 p.m. on Thursday, December 31st.  The game can be seen on Big Sioux Media.

Deubrook Area Defeats Cardinal Girls

DRSM LogoAfter the Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals lead 3-0 in the first minute of the game, Deubrook Area held the Cardinals to just one more point in the first quarter while building a lead they would never lose.  The Dolphins defeated the Cardinals 65-27 on Monday, December 21st, in White.

Deubrook Area led 16-4 after the first quarter and increased their lead to 35-14 at halftime.  The Dolphins then out-scored St Mary 30-13 in the second half.

The Cardinals finished the game shooting 21.6% (8-37) from the field, 0-2 from three-point area, and 70.6% (12-17) from the free-throw line.  St Mary also had 27 team rebounds and eight steals.

Jackie Wolles led the Cardinals in scoring with eight points.  Sydney Cook finished with seven points, and Lexi Klein added five points.  Cook led the team with six rebounds.  Wolles finished with three.  Cassy Geraets had three steals.

St Mary (1-4) will play Ipswich on Wednesday, December 30th, at 12:00 p.m. in Brookings at the Swiftel Center as part of the Swiftel Center Basketball Classic.

Defense Key for Cardinal Girls in Win

DRSMvsCE_GBB_12-19-15Colman/Egan had no answer for the Dell Rapids St Mary defense, as the Cardinals cruised to a 40-26 win at the Entringer Classic on Saturday, December 19th, in Colman.

The Cardinals had just a two-point lead at the end of the first quarter, but held the Hawks to just 15 points over the next three quarters.  St Mary extended their lead to 23-14 at halftime, and they also led 31-19 at the end of the third quarter.

Colman/Egan shot just 17% (10-59) from the field, 13% (3-24) from three-point range, and 43% (3-7) from the free-throw line.  Meanwhile the Cardinals shot 37% (18-49) from the field and 44% (4-9) from the free-throw line.  The key stat of the game was rebounding.  St Mary out-rebounded the Hawks 50-27.  39 of the 50 rebounds for the Cardinals were on the defensive end of the court.

Sydney Cook led St Mary with a game-high 12 points and 16 rebounds.  Cook also had two assists.  Lexi Klein finished with nine points and seven rebounds.  Jackie Wolles and Abby Brukhart each had six points in the game.  Burgin Groos had 11 points for Colman/Egan.

Cook was named the game MVP.

St Mary (1-3) will travel to White on Monday, December 21st, to take on the Deubrook Area Dolphins.

DeSmet’s Defense Leads to Win over Cardinal Girls

DRSM LogoThe DeSmet Bulldog’s held the Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals to just 11 first half points on their way to a 42-22 win in girls basketball action on Thursday, December 17th, in DeSmet.  The Bulldogs jumped out to a 13-6 lead after the first quarter and led 29-11 at halftime.  DeSmet also lead 34-13 at the end of the third quarter.

St Mary shot just 14.7% (5-34) from the field in the game and 70.6% (12-17) from the free-throw line.  The Cardinals had a total of 37 team rebounds, seven steals, four assists, but turned the ball over 30 times.

Jackie Wolles had nine points and nine rebounds in the game.  Sydney Cook also had nine points along with two rebounds.  Abby Burkhart and Lexi Klein each had two points apiece.  Kennedi Mullaney had two assists and four rebounds in the game.

St Mary (0-3) will play Colman-Egan in the Entringer Classic on Saturday, December 19th.  The game can be seen on Big Sioux Media.

Cardinal Girls Fall to Estelline

DRSM LogoThe Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal girls basketball team dropped a close game to Estelline 38-33 on Thursday, December 10th, at Dell Rapids St Mary High School.

Lexi Klein led the Cardinals with 10 points in the game.  Kennedi Mullaney finished with six.  Estelline had three players score double figures.  LeAnnah Tekrony, Kaitlyn Steffensen, and Jamie Begalka each had 10 points a piece.

St Mary (0-2) will host Centerville on Tuesday, December 15th, as part of a double-header.  The game can be seen on Big Sioux Media.
