Cardinal Girls Win 2nd in a Row

DRSM LogoThe Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal girls ended their regular season with their second win in a row.  The Cardinals defeated the Marion Bears 59-36 on Friday, February 19th, in Marion.

St Mary held Marion to 13 total first half points.  The Cardinals led from the beginning of the game.  St Mary led 18-6 after the first quarter and 30-13 at halftime.  Marion was able to out score the Cardinals in the third quarter, but only by a point.  St Mary still led 44-28 at the end of the third quarter.  The Cardinals out scored the Bears 15-8 in the final quarter.

The Cardinals shot 37% (23-62) from the field, 46% (5-11) from three-point area, and 73% (8-11) from the free-throw line.  St Mary also had 46 team rebounds, 16 assists, and nine steals.

Jackie Wolles had a game-high 14 points.  Sydney Cook added 12 points and five rebounds.  Abby Burkhart had eight points and six rebounds.  Lexi Klein also had eight points and five rebounds.  Kennedi Mullaney had six points, seven rebounds, and seven assists.  Clare Klein had six points, and Ella Heinitz added five points.

St Mary finished with a 6-14 regular-season record.  The girls District 7B tournament begins on Tuesday, February 23rd.  The Cardinals will play on Thursday, February 25th, at Elkton against the Elkton-Lake Benton Elks.

Defense Carries Cardinal Girls to Win over O-R-R

DRSM LogoThe Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal defense held the Oldham-Ramona/Rutland Raiders to single-digit points in each quarter on the way to a 47-28 win on Tuesday, February 16th, at Dell Rapids St Mary High School on Senior Night.  The Cardinals held the Raiders to just 24% shooting from the field and pulled down 29 defensive rebounds.

The Cardinals didn’t trail in the ball game as they jumped out to a 14-9 lead in the first quarter.  St Mary then held the Raiders to just five second quarter points and held a 25-14 lead at halftime.  Oldham-Ramona/Rutland was then only able to score five points in the third quarter and nine points in the fourth quarter as the Cardinals cruised to the win.

Sydney Cook had a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds.  Jackie Wolles finished the night with 11 points, five assists and four steals.  Abby Burkhart, Lexi Klein, and Kennedi Mullaney all had six points apiece.  Ella Heinitz finished with four points.  Klein had eight rebounds in the game, and Burkhart and Mullaney each had seven rebounds.

St Mary (5-14) closed out the regular season on the road at Marion on Friday, February 19th.

C/E Hawks Beat Cardinal Girls on Third Try

DRSM LogoIn the third meeting between the Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals and Colman/Egan Hawks, the Hawks finally got the best of the Cardinals earning a 52-32 victory on Friday, February 12th, at Dell Rapids St Mary High School.  St Mary had beaten the Hawks two times earlier this year on December 19th and January 22nd.

After the first score of the game, Colman/Egan didn’t trail again in the game.  The Hawks held a nine point lead at the end of the first quarter at 15-6.  They added to their lead in the second quarter and led 23-12 at halftime.  The Cardinals cut the lead to 31-22 by the end of the third quarter, but Colman/Egan out scored St Mary 21-10 in the final quarter for the win.

St Mary shot 30% (10-31) from the field, went 0-7 from three-point area, and 62% (12-22) from the free-throw line.  Colman/Egan out rebounded St Mary 32-25 and forced 25 Cardinal turnovers.

Sydney Cook had 12 points and six rebounds in the game to lead the Cardinals.  Jackie Wolles had seven points and four rebounds.  Kennedi Mullaney had six points and five rebounds.  Cook and Mullaney also had two steals each.

St Mary (4-14) will host Oldham-Ramona/Rutland on Tuesday, February 16th, in their final regular season home game of the year.  The game can be seen on Big Sioux Media.

First and Fourth Quarters Sink Cardinal Girls

DRSM LogoThe Centerville Tornadoes used big first and fourth quarters to secure a 74-45 win over the Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals on Tuesday, February 9th, at Dell Rapids St Mary High School.

Centerville led start to finish in the game.  The Tornadoes held an 11-point lead after the first quarter at 21-10.  The lead grew to 15 points by halftime at 39-24.  St Mary outscored the Tornadoes in the third quarter, but only by a point, and still trailed 49-35 heading into the fourth quarter.  Centerville added 25 more points in the fourth quarter while holding the Cardinals to just 10 points.

St Mary shot 26% (16-61) from the field, 25% (3-12) from three-point area, and 59% (10-17) from the free-throw line.  The Cardinals had 44 team rebounds, eight assists, but had 20 turnovers.

Sydney Cook led the team with 10 points, 11 rebounds, and three steals.  Kennedi Mullaney had nine points and eight rebounds.  Jackie Wolles also had nine points along with five rebounds and three assists.  Abby Burkhart had eight points, seven rebounds and two assists.

The Cardinals (4-13) will host Colman/Egan on Friday, February 12th.

First Half Secures Win for Elkton/Lake Benton over Cardinal Girls

DRSM LogoThe Elkton/Lake Benton Elks used a big first half to beat the Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal girls 54-37 on Friday, February 5th, at Elkton.  The Elks outscored St Mary 30-9 in the first two quarters of the game.  The Cardinals trailed the Elks 38-18 at the end of the third quarter.  St Mary was able to get going offensively in the fourth quarter, scoring 19 points….more than the first three quarters combined, but wasn’t enough to surpass Elkton/Lake Benton.

The Cardinals finished the night 36% (13-36) from the field.  They shot 43% (3-7) from three-point area and 53% (8-15) from the free-throw line.  The Elks were 37% (19-52) from the field in the game.  Elkton/Lake Benton out rebounded the Cardinals 36-29 and forced 26 St Mary turnovers.

Jackie Wolles finished with 10 points and seven rebounds.  Kennedi Mullany also had 10 points along with three rebounds.  Lexi Klein added six points and four rebounds, and Cassy Geraets ended the night with five points, four rebounds, and two steals.

St Mary (4-12) will travel to Marion on Monday, January 8th.

Last Second Shot Sends Cardinal Girls Home with Win

DRSM LogoJackie Wolles hit the game-winning layup as time expired to give the Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal girls a 34-33 win over the Bridgewater-Emery Huskies on Monday, February 1st, in Bridgewater.  The win ended a three-game skid for St Mary.

The Huskies led by as many as 12 points in the first half, and had a 21-11 lead at halftime.  St Mary held the Huskies scoreless in the third quarter and tied the game at 21-21.  The Cardinals had a six point led with about 5:00 left in the game, but the Huskies hit their last field goal with about :30 to play.  That was before Wolles made the game-winning layup at the buzzer.

St Mary finished the night shooting 36% (13-36) from the field, 33% (2-6) from three-point area, and 40% (6-15) from the free-throw line.  The Huskies shot 24% (13-54) in the game.  The Cardinals had 34 team rebounds, 10 assists, and seven steals.

The Cardinals had a balanced offensive attack in the game.  Wolles led the team with eight points.  She also had five rebounds, two assists, and two steals.  Lexi Klein and Kennedi Mullaney both had seven points.  Sydney Cook finished with six points.  Cook and Klein both had six rebounds.  Cook also had three assists and three steals.

St Mary (4-11) will travel to Elkton to play the Elkton/Lake Benton Elks on Friday, February 5th.

Arlington Wins Girls “Battle of the Cardinals”

DRSM LogoAfter leading by 18 points with 4:56 to go in the third quarter, the Arlington Cardinals hung on to beat the Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals 51-45 in Arlington on Friday, January 29th.  The game had eight lead changes and five ties.

St Mary led by as many as four in the first quarter, but had just a 16-14 after the first quarter.  St Mary, however, then only scored four points in the second quarter, and Arlington had a 35-20 lead at halftime.  St Mary was able to chip away at the lead and closed out the third quarter trailing 47-38.  St Mary outscored Arlington 7-4 in the fourth quarter, but Arlington was able to hold on for the win.

Kennedi Mullaney had 13 points and six rebounds to lead St Mary.  Jackie Wolles added nine points and four rebounds.  Abby Burkhart tossed in eight points and grabbed six rebounds.  Sydney Cook and Cassy Geraets each had six points.  St Mary finished the night shooting 41% (15-35) from the field.

St Mary (3-11) will travel to Bridgewater to face Bridgewater-Emery on Monday, February 1st.

Arlington Wins Battle of Cardinal Against St Mary Boys

DRSM LogoThe Arlington Cardinals defeated the Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals 50-30 in Arlington on Thursday, January 28th.  St Mary was only able to score nine points through the first three quarters before the offense was able to score 21 in the final quarter.  Arlington led 12-3 after the first quarter, 24-5 at halftime, and 40-9 at the end of the third quarter.

St Mary finished the game at 43.8% (14-32) from the field, 22.2% (2-9) from the three-point area, and 0-2 from the free-throw line.  St Mary also had a total of 26 rebounds and turned the ball over 22 times.  Arlington finished the game shooting 31.7% (19-60) from the field, 27.3% (3-11) from the three-point area, and 75% (9-12) from the free-throw line.

Connor Libis had had a team-high 11 points in the game.  Luke Brown finished with nine points, and Zach Geraets and Noah Fiegen both had four points each.  Fiegen also had nine rebounds.  Libis finished with five assists and three steals.

St Mary (1-13) travels to Elkton to play the Elkton/Lake Benton Elks on Thursday, February 4th.

Cardinal Girls Comeback Falls Short

DRSM LogoThe Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal rally fell just short against the Baltic Bulldogs on Monday, January 25th, at Dell Rapids St Mary High School.  The Bulldogs hung on to defeat the Cardinals 49-46.

Baltic took the early lead over St Mary in the first quarter and led 15-6 by the end of the quarter.  The Bulldogs extended their lead to 12, the largest of the game, with 2:43 to go in the first half.  The Cardinals brought the game back down into single digits by halftime at 26-17.  St Mary was able to get within a point in the third quarter, but Baltic was able to end the third quarter ahead 34-30.  The Cardinals again got within a point with 3:07 to go in the game, but the Bulldogs held on for the win.

The Cardinals finished the night at 25.5% (13-51) from the field, 28.6% (4-14) from three-point area, and 57.1% (16-28) from the free-throw line.  St Mary had 35 team rebounds, eight assists, and 15 steals.

Sydney Cook led the Cardinals with 13 points, six rebounds, four assists, and four steals.  Lexi Klein added 11 points and five rebounds.  Kennedi Mullaney had nine points and four steals.  Jackie Wolles finished with eight points, eight rebounds, and four steals.

St Mary (3-10) will travel to Arlington to face the Arlington Cardinals on Friday, January 29th.

Cardinal Girls Hold off Colman/Egan

DRSM LogoThe Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal girls defeated the Colman/Egan Hawks in the Dakota Valley Conference tournament 42-34 at Dell Rapids St Mary High School.  The win sends the Cardinals to the 5th/6th place game.

Colman/Egan had a small two-point lead midway through the first quarter, but the two teams were tied at 4-4 at the end of the quarter.  The Cardinals then gained the lead in the second quarter and had a 17-13 lead at halftime.  St Mary pushed that lead to 14 points in the third quarter, but the Hawks were able to pull within six at 27-21 by the end of the third quarter.  The Cardinals held off Colman/Egan in the fourth quarter for the win.

St Mary had two players finish in double figures.  Jackie Wolles led all scorers with 20 points in the game.  Sydney Cook added 12 points.  Lexi Klein had 10 rebounds and four steals, while Kennedi Mullaney finished with seven points.

The Cardinals shot 32% (13-41) from the field, 20% (2-10) from three-point area and 56% (14-25) from the free-throw line.  Colman/Egan finished just 29% from the field and 50% from the free-throw line.

St Mary (3-8) will play Lake Preston in the 5th/6th place game at 4:00 p.m. in White at Deubrook High School.
