Cardinal Girls Win Streak Ends at Three

DRSM LogoThe Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals took a three-game winning streak into a game against the Alcester-Hudson Cubs on Thursday, January 25th at Dell Rapids St Mary High School.  The Cubs used big first and fourth quarters to stop the St Mary streak with a 51-34 win over the Cardinals.

The Cardinal offense couldn’t get any shots to fall for them in the first quarter.  They were only able to make one free throw, which allowed the Cubs to get out to a 14-1 lead after the first quarter.  St Mary got the offense going in the second quarter and outscored Alcester-Hudson 12-5 to cut the lead to 19-13 by halftime.  St Mary was able to get the lead down to four points a couple of times in the third quarter, but the quarter ended with the Cubs maintaining a six-point lead at 31-25.  Alcester-Hudson finished the game on a 20-9 fourth quarter difference for the 17-point victory.

Maddie Schwebach led the Cardinals with 13 points and four rebounds.  Ella Heinitz finished with seven points.  Sydney Cook added six points and six rebounds.  Cassy Geraets had five points, and Clare Klein finished with three points.

St Mary (6-8) will travel to Emery to face Bridgewater-Emery on Monday, January 29th.

Cardinal Girls Extends Win Streak to Three

DRSMvsBal_GBB_1-22-18The Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal girls team won their third straight game on Monday, January 22nd.  St Mary defeated the Baltic Bulldogs 68-39 at Dell Rapids St Mary High School.

The Bulldogs got off to a hot start in the first quarter.  They led the Cardinals 17-12 at the break.  St Mary, however, went on a 10-0 in the first 3:20 of the second quarter capped by a three-point shot by Ella Heinitz to take a 22-17 lead.  The Bulldogs answered with a 5-0 run over the next 1:40 to the the game at 22-22 with 3:00 to go in the first half.  The Cardinals closed out the second quarter by outscoring Baltic 6-4 to take a 28-26 lead into halftime.

The St Mary defense came was huge in the second half.  Baltic was only able to score four points in the third quarter which allowed the Cardinals to extend their lead to 37-30 heading into the final quarter.  The Bulldogs were only able to score nine points in the fourth quarter as the Cardinals pulled away for the win.

Heinitz led the Cardinals in scoring with 20 points.  Clare Klein added seven points, while Sydney Cook and Cassy Geraets both had six points each.

St Mary (6-7) will look to win their fourth in a row when they host Alcester-Hudson on Thursday, January 25th.  The game can be seen on Big Sioux Media.

Cardinal Girls Take Fifth at DVC Tourney

DRSM LogoThe Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals girls basketball team took fifth place at the Dakota Valley Conference tournament this year.  The Cardinals ended the tournament with a 47-43 overtime win against the Colman-Egan Hawks at Elkton on Saturday, January 20th.

The Cardinals opened up the DVC tournament on Tuesday, January 16th at Deubrook High School with a 67-51 loss to Lake Preston.  St Mary followed that with a 47-14 win over Oldham-Ramona/Rutland on Friday, January 19th to advance to the 5th/6th place game against Colman-Egan.

Colman-Egan had an early lead of two points with 6:31 to go in the first quarter, but St Mary led for most of the game.  The Cardinals held an 11-9 lead at the end of the first quarter.  The Hawks cut the lead to a point at 21-20 at halftime.  St Mary pushed the to 10 points with 2:02 to go in the third quarter, but Colman-Egan cut the lead to 36-29 by the end of the quarter.  The Hawk defense held St Mary to just four points in the final quarter and made a three-point shot at the buzzer to send the game into overtime tied 40-40.  St Mary responded in the overtime period by outscoring Colman-Egan 7-3, and Sydney Cook made two clutch free throws with :05 left in the overtime to secure the victory for the Cardinals.

Cook led the team with 17 points and nine rebounds in the game.  Ella Heinitz had 13 points and three assists.  Maddie Schwebach finished with eight points and eight rebounds, and Cassy Geraets had six points in the game.

St Mary (5-7) will host Baltic on Monday, January 22nd.  The game can be seen on Big Sioux Media.

Cardinal Girls Drop Two Tough Games

DRSM LogoThe Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal girls basketball team dropped two tough games on back-to-back nights Thursday, January 11th and Friday, January 12th.

The Cardinals fell to the Canistota Hawks 55-48 Thursday night in Canistota.  The Hawks led by five points at the end of the first quarter 20-15.  St Mary got the game within a point at 27-26, but Canistota finished the second quarter on a 6-0 run to take a 33-26 lead into halftime.  The Cardinals closed the gap by the end of the third quarter to four points at 41-37.  St Mary was within two points at 48-46 with 3:00 to play in the game, but the shots wouldn’t fall for the Cardinals the remainder of the game.  St Mary was only able to score two more points, and Canistota took the win by seven points.  Ella Heinitz led the Cardinals with 24 points in the game.

The Cardinals hit the road for the second night in a row traveling to Lake Preston on Friday.  The Cardinals fell to the Divers 62-52.  St Mary scored 15 points in the first quarter and trailed by one at 16-15.  Lake Preston, however, outscored the Cardinals 17-7 in the second quarter to take a 35-22 lead at halftime.  The lead for the Divers grew to 22 points in the third quarter, but St Mary as able to get it down to 15 at 49-34.  St Mary would outscore Lake Preston 18-13 in the final quarter, but it wasn’t enough as the Divers held for the win.  Maddie Schwebach led St Mary against Lake Preston with 18 points.

The Cardinals (3-6) will play the Lake Preston Divers again on Tuesday, January 16th in the opening round of the Dakota Valley Conference tournament.  The game will be played in White at Deubrook High School at 6:00 p.m.  Big Sioux Media will have a link to the Deubrook webcast.

Cardinal Girls Defeated by Tough Deubrook Team

DRSMvsDeu_GBB_1-4-18The Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal girls basketball team dropped a hard-fought game against a tough Deubrook Area Dolphin team on Thursday, January 4th.  The Dolphins beat the Cardinals 56-42 at Dell Rapids St Mary High School.

The Dolphins entered the game with a 5-1 record and got out to a quick start.  The Deubrook pressure defense caused a few Cardinal turnovers in the first quarter that led to a 19-8 lead for the Dolphins after the first quarter.  St Mary came back in a big way in the second quarter by outscoring Deubrook 16-7 to close the gap to just two points by halftime at 26-24.  The Cardinal offense struggled a bit in the third quarter scoring only five points in the quarter.  Deubrook was able to push their lead to 14 points at 43-29.  That proved to be the difference in the game as both teams scored 13 points in the final quarter.

Cassy Geraets led the team with 13 points in the game.  Ella Heinitz added 10 points for the Cardinals.

St Mary (3-4) will look to rebound against the Canistota Hawks on Thursday, January 11th, in Canistota.

Chester Hands Cardinal Girls Loss to Start New Year

DRSM LogoThe Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals lost to the Chester Flyers 59-44 in their first game of the 2018 calendar year on Tuesday, January 2nd.  The game was held at Chester Area High School and was a battle of Region 4B opponents.

Chester Area led at the end of the first quarter 15-8 and never gave up the lead.  The Flyers extended their lead to 25-14 by halftime.  Chester Area also outscored the Cardinals 34-30 in the second half in the win.

St Mary finished the game shooting 36% from the field in the game, but only 26% in the first half.  St Mary also shot 44% from the three-point area and 89% from the free throw line.  The Cardinals had 18 team rebounds, 16 steals, but turned the ball over 22 times.

Ella Heinitz led the team with 15 points and five steals.  Cassy Geraets added 10 points and six rebounds.  Chester Area was led by Makenna Larson with 13 points.

St Mary (3-3) will host the Deubrook Area Dolphins on Thursday, January 4th.  The game can be seen on Big Sioux Media.

Cardinal Girls Fall to De Smet

DRSM LogoThe Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals fell to a tough De Smet Bulldog team in girls basketball action on Monday, December 18th, at Dell Rapids St Mary High School.  The Bulldogs beat the Cardinals 72-37.

De Smet only led by nine points at the end of the first quarter at 22-13, but increased their lead by halftime to 44-20 by holding St Mary to only seven points.  The offense of De Smet kept rolling in the second half as they outscored St Mary 28-17 in the final two quarters for the win.

Clare Klein led the team with 14 points in the game.  Ella Heinitz finished with 12 points.  Maddie Schwebach added seven points.  De Smet was led by Kristen Poppen with 23 points.

St Mary (3-2) will not play again until Tuesday, January 2nd, when they travel to Chester to take on the Flyers in a Region 4B matchup.

Cardinal Girls Win Second Meeting with Estelline

DRSMvsEst_GBB_12-16-17The Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal girls basketball team got revenge on their lone loss of the season at the Entringer Classic on Saturday, December 16th, at Colman-Egan High School.  Playing the Estelline Redmen for the second time in three days, the Cardinals this time earned a 43-40 win to improve to 3-1 on the year.

The two teams were tied 5-5 about midway through the first quarter, but Estelline went on a 7-0 run to take a 12-5 lead with about 3:00 remaining in the quarter.  St Mary closed out the first quarter on a 5-0 run to cut the lead to 12-10 after one period of play.  The Cardinals scored the first nine points of the third quarter to make the run 14-0 over two quarters.  St Mary led 19-12, but Estelline closed out the first half on a 5-0 run to cut the St Mary lead to 19-17 at halftime.

The Cardinals continued to roll offensively in the third quarter building a 33-23 lead.  Estelline again would get the final points of the quarter to cut the lead to 33-26 at the end of the third quarter.  Estelline then caught fire and scored the first six points of the fourth quarter to cut the lead to 33-32.  The two teams went back and forth through the middle portion of the fourth quarter.  St Mary took a 41-38 lead late in the quarter, but Estelline pulled within a point at 41-40 with :10 to play.  Estelline fouled Ella Heinitz with :04.9 to go.  Heinitz made both free throws on the bonus free throws to give Dell Rapids a 43-40 lead.  The last second shot at the buzzer by Estelline was no good, and St Mary held tough for the win. Sydney Cook was named the game’s MVP.  Cook finished with 10 points, 16 rebounds, two steals, and one assist.  Heinitz had 12 points and four rebounds in the game.  Maddie Schwebach finished with six points, and Adyn Heiniricy had five points.

Cardinal Girls Drop First Game to Estelline

DRSM LogoAfter a strong first quarter, the Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals dropped their first game of the season to the Estelline Redmen on Thursday, December 14th.  The Cardinals lost 38-30 at Estelline.

St Mary led 15-6  after the first quarter, and held their largest lead of the game at 13 points with 1:09 to go in the second quarter.  Estelline cut the lead to 11 by halftime at 21-10.  Estelline got hot in the second half and outscored the Cardinals 15-3 in the third quarter to take a 25-24 lead.  They then outscored St Mary 13-6 in the final quarter for the win.

The Cardinals shot 25% from the field, 6% from beyond the three-point line, and 30% from the free-throw line.  St Mary had a total of 44 team rebounds, but turned the ball over 22 times.

Ella Heinitz had 15 points to lead the Cardinals.  Maddie Schwebach had six points.  Sydney Cook finished with four points.  Adyn Heinricy and Cassy Geraets both had two points in the game. Cook had a team high 10 rebounds.  Geraets added seven rebounds.  Heinitz and Schwebach both had six rebounds.

The Cardinals (2-1) will play Estelline again on Saturday, December 16th, at 2:00 p.m. at Colman-Egan High School at the Entringer Classic.  The game can be seen on Big Sioux Media.

Cardinal Girls Enjoy 2-0 Start

DRSM LogoThe Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal girls basketball team is off to a 2-0 start to the 2017-2018 season after a 61-43 win over the Mitchell Christian Eagles in Mitchell on Tuesday, December 12th.  The Cardinals lead at every quarter break in the game.

St Mary was able to build a lead in the first quarter they would not lose.  The Cardinals lead 21-8 after the first quarter.  They pushed that lead to 18 points by halftime at 38-20.  The Eagles closed the gap to 12 points by the end of the third quarter at 49-37, but St Mary held the Eagles to just six points in the final quarter while scoring 12 for the win.

Three players finished in double figures for St Mary.  Maddie Schwebach and Ella Heinitz both had 16 points each in the game.  Sydney Cook added 14 points.

The Cardinals (2-0) will now face Estelline two times to close out the week.  St Mary will travel to Estelline on Thursday, December 14th.  They will then face each other again on Saturday, December 16th at the Entringer Classic in Colman.
