DRHS School Project Being Rebid

September 22, 2015 by Matt Larson, Big Sioux Media

NewDRLogoA plan by the Dell Rapids High School to make improvements to the building will be going out for rebid in December.  Mark Aspaas of Architecture, Inc presented revised plans to the Dell Rapids School Board during their regular meeting on Monday, September 14th.

The improvement plans for the school include adding a science room addition, moving the office area location to near the front door where the current distance learning room is located, and renovating the locker rooms.  The plan was estimated to cost about $1.5 million and was put out for bids in June.  The bids came back at over $2 million.  The school board decided to reject the bids at that time and re-evaluate the plans.

Aspaas presented the board with updated plans that included $100,000 of savings from the original plan.  He also mentioned to the board that comparable projects in the area coming back with lower bids than earlier in the year.

The specifications of the project are expected to be completed in October for December bidding.  If the project moves forward after bidding, construction could potentially start in the spring.

Smoke Fills Dell Rapids High School

June 3, 2015 by Matt Larson, Big Sioux Media

DRHSFire_6-3-15_5The Dell Rapids High School filled with smoke Wednesday morning (June 3rd), and fire crews were called to the building at around 9:30 a.m.  Fire departments from Dell Rapids, Baltic, and Colton along with the Minnehaha County Emergency Management and Sheriff’s Department were called to the scene.

Firefighters were on the roof during the morning to investigate the cause of the smoke.  Reports indicate that the smoke was mostly contained in the west/northwest part of the building.  Crews were using fans to clear the smoke from the building.

Dell Rapids assistant fire chief Clarence Fjellanger mentioned that an air exchange unit’s burnt motor and wiring caused the smoke to fill the high school side of the building.  The school building did not receive any fire or smoke damage.  Superintendent Summer Schultz noted that only minimal damage to the air exchange unit was found.

New Band Uniforms for Dell Rapids

March 15, 2014 by Matt Larson, Big Sioux Media

The Dell Rapids School Board made the decision to purchase new uniforms for the Dell Rapids High School marching band at its regular meeting held on Monday, March 10th.  Band Director Brian Smith requested the purchase of new band uniforms in November.  The request was to purchase 80 uniforms for a total cost of just under $25,000, and the estimated time of order fulfillment is between 120 and 150 days.  Edie Hinricher, Music Booster President, was on hand during the school board meeting and said that the Music Boosters would donate $5,000 towards the purchase of the new uniforms.

During the discussion, school board members Steve Stofferahn and Matt Weiland asked if the decision to purchase the new band uniforms should wait another month since the financial budget for FY2015 is still in the early stages of finalization.  But Tom Morris, school board President, said, “I just think because of the time constraint, I would hate to wait another month, knowing that we need these uniforms, and then not have them available for next year.”

Morris then made the motion to approve the request of the purchase of new band uniforms for FY2015, with a $5,000 donation toward the purchase to come from the Music Boosters.  The motion was seconded by Stofferahn.  The motion passed with all member voting yes.

The full discussion can be seen on the archived video.  The band uniform discussion starts at the 15:26 mark and ends at the 31:50 mark of the video “DRHS School Board 3-10-14” on the webcasts page.

Dell Rapids School Board Considering Start Date Change

March 14, 2014 by Matt Larson, Big Sioux Media

During the regular school board meeting held on Monday, March 10th, Superintendent Summer Schultz presented the board with results of a parent, staff, and student survey on school start date.  The survey was made available between February 27th and March 9th.  315 responses were received from survey takers logged in as Dell Rapids Public and 65 logged in as Dell Rapids St Mary.  About 80% of total survey takers were parents.

The results of the survey that Schultz handed out showed parents were in favor of a later start date, and the high school students showed a preference for the first semester to end before Christmas break.  However, ending the first semester before Christmas break would not be possible with the first day of school starting later in the fall.  The entire discussion about the school calendar can be seen on the archived video located on the Webcasts page.  The discussion starts at the 31:50 mark and ends at the 1:04:39 mark on the video titled DRHS School Board 3-10-14.

The survey results were were also presented to the Superintendent’s cabinet.  Schultz has put together three draft versions of the FY2015 school calendar that will be considered by the school board during a special meeting that will be held on Monday, March 17th, at 7:00 p.m. in the HS/MS DDN Room.  The three versions of the proposed calendar can be viewed by clicking the links.

Dell Rapids Public Now to End School Year on May 15th

April 23, 2013 by Matt Larson, Big Sioux Media

The Dell Rapids School Board voted and approved the last day of school to now be on Wednesday, May 15th, during their regular school board meeting on Monday, April 22nd.  The students will dismiss school for the summer at 1:00 p.m on that day.  The additional days were added to the 2012-2013 calendar due to recent snow days during the recent snow storms in April.  The board also voted that if any more school days were missed due to weather, those additional days would not be made up by the students, however, the teachers would be required to make up those days.

Also during the meeting, the school board members were presented with certificates of appreciation from the FFA, and the board approved the 2013-2014 food service contract renewal with Lunchtime Solutions, Inc.

The entire minutes of the meeting can be found here.

October is National High School Activities Month

October 1, 2012 by Matt Larson, Big Sioux Media

INDIANAPOLIS, IN (September 20, 2012) — The National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) has designated the month of October as National High School Activities Month to help schools throughout the nation promote the values inherent in high school athletic and performing arts activities.

Started in 1980 as National High School Activities Week, the NFHS expanded the celebration to a month last year to provide additional time for the 19,000-plus high schools to hold special activities at the local level.

“National High School Activities Month is an opportunity to remind the public that already in place in every community is a comprehensive program addressing society’s most current concerns,” said Elliot Hopkins, NFHS director of sports and educational services.

Hopkins noted that high school activities help meet these issues by:

  • Finding and nurturing the best effort of each young participant;
  • Encouraging students to stay in school, perform better academically and become better citizens;
  • Demanding respect for fair play and appreciation for the equitable application of procedures, rules and regulations;
  • Providing healthy lifestyle instruction; and
  • Challenging racism, sexism and classism through the active pursuit of teamwork and school spirit.

Four specific-emphasis weeks are planned within the month-long celebration: National Sportsmanship and Fan Appreciation Week (October 1-6), National Performing Arts Activities Week (October 8-13), National Coaches/Sponsors/Advisors/Officials Week (October 15-20) and National Community Service/Youth Awareness Week (October 22-27).

“High school sports and activity programs provide one of the best bargains in our community and nation and will continue to do so as long as our nation supports them as an integral part of the education of our young people,” said Bob Gardner, NFHS executive director. “Not only do these programs teach the more than 11 million young people who participate in them valuable life skills lessons, such as ethics, integrity and healthy lifestyles, they also provide the best entertainment value in our nation.”

The NFHS has provided suggested activities for schools during each of the week-long events. All materials for National High School Activities Month, including The Case for High School Activities, are available on the NFHS Web site at www.nfhs.org (About NFHS/About Us Resources/2012 National High School Activities Month Materials).
