Dell Rapids Post 65 Comes up Short in Last Three Games

June 16, 2013 by Matt Larson, Big Sioux Media

The Dell Rapids Legion Post 65 team ran into some tough competition in their last three games.  Dell Rapids dropped a double-header to Madison on Wednesday, June 12th, by scores of 1-0 and 5-4.

In the first game, Dell Rapids was only able to pick up one hit by Austin Kubly.  They had runners in scoring position only three times the entire game as Jacob Giles of Madison was able to hold Dell Rapids in check.  Zane Schumacher pitched an equally impressive game only giving up one run in the 4th inning as he worked all seven innings.

In the second game of the night, Dell Rapids had eight hits by eight different players.  Post 65 tied the game in the top of the 7th at 4-4, but Madison scored in the bottom of the inning to win 5-4. Cody Nielsen threw five innings and Wes Hansen threw the 6th and finished in the 7th.

“We did not play defensive sound baseball.  Our bats cooled off a bit, and we need to do the small things better and we will be okay,” said head coach Ryan Robb.

Dell Rapids traveled to Canton the next night on Thursday, June 13th, but lost another one-run ball game 5-4.  Post 65 again had eight hits as a team.  Tanner Solberg had two of the eight hits.  Derrick Vortherms started on the hill for Dell Rapids and threw four good innings allowing only two runs.  Solberg pitched the next four innings only allowing one run.  Matt Kolbeck came in to finish in the 9th and allowed two runs.

“We have lost three 1-run ballgames in the last week and while we do not like to lose games, I think our guys will learn from our mistakes, and we will be better because of these close games,” said Robb.

Post 65 will travel to Humboldt on Monday, June 17th, play host to Vermillion on Wednesday, June 19th, and will host Salem/Canova on Friday, June 21st.  Friday’s game will be webcast on Big Sioux Media starting at 4:45 p.m.
