15/16 Dell Rapids Teeners Win Baltic Tournament

The Dell Rapids 15/16 Teeners won the Baltic Tournament held Friday, July 15th, and Saturday, July 16th.

Dell Rapids opened up the tournament on Friday with a 10-0 win over Centerville. Lealand Randel pitched all four innings of the run-rule shortened game, and he did not allow a hit. Randel struck out seven and walked two. Austin Ellingson and Carter Gullickson led the offense by each collecting two hits. Ellingson scored three times.

Dell Rapids’ second game came on Saturday, and Dell Rapids beat Baltic 14-1 to earn a spot in the championship game. Ellingson pitched all four innings striking out seven while only allowing one earned run. Matt Gillogly reached base all four times he came to the plate by hitting a triple, a double and being hit by pitches twice. Ellingson and Gullickson each had two hits, and Seth Spielmann and Keegan Miller both had a triple.

Dell Rapids defeated Madison in the championship game Saturday afternoon 3-2. Gillogly hit a solo home run in the game and also drove in Gullickson for the game-winning run in the seventh inning. Gullickson scored two times. Miller added a double and single. Eddie Price earned the win by pitching 6 2/3 innings striking out 11 batters. Gullickson got the save by getting the last out on a bases loaded ground ball in the bottom of the seventh inning.

With the three wins in the tournament, Dell Rapids improves to 14-4 on the season.

Dell Rapids 15s Headed to 15/16 State Tournament

The Dell Rapids 15s Teener team qualified for the 15/16 State A VFW Teener Tournament by placing 2nd in the Region 3A tournament which was held in Dell Rapids at Rickeman Field July 27-29.

Dell Rapids 15s started the tournament on Monday, July 27th against West Central. West Central won the game despite outstanding pitching performances by Elijah Story (four innings) and Lealand Randel (two innings). West Central scored four runs on three consecutive Dell Rapids throwing errors in the third inning with two outs. Dell Rapids was only able to muster one run in the game and fell to West Central 4-1. Seth Spielmann and Story each collected two hits in the game.

Now in the loser’s bracket, Dell Rapids came back and won their next game over Dell Rapids 16s 9-0 on Tuesday, July 28th. Dell Rapids 15s turned two double-plays in the first and second innings. Austin Ellingson struck out 11 batters in a complete-game shutout. Story threw out two attempted base stealers at second during the game. Jeffry Schuch led the offense for Dell Rapids 15s going 3-4 with a double and five RBIs. Keegan Miller added two hits, and Ellingosn, Carter Gullickson, and Elijah Story each scored two runs.

Dell Rapids 15s earned a spot in the finals by defeating Tri-Valley 2-0 on Wednesday, July 29th, in an exciting pitching dual. Gullickson carried a perfect game into the sixth inning, which is when Tri-Valley would get their only hit of the game. Gullickson finished the one-hit shutout for the win by striking out six batters. The defense was solid for Dell Rapids as they did not commit an error in the game. Miller was 3-3 offensively with three singles. Spielmann went 2-3 and drove in both runs of the game.

Dell Rapids 15s met up with West Central again, this time in the championship game, on Wednesday, July 29th. After a sluggish start to the game, Dell Rapids was able to tie the game at 6-6 in the sixth inning. However, Dell Rapids would run out of steam and surrender seven runs to West Central in the seventh inning to fall 13-6. Story, Schuch, Spielmann, Cameron Bruhn, and Eddie Price all picked up a hit and scored a run in the game. Logan Ruesink was 2-4 with two RBIs.

Since West Central is hosting the 15/16 State A VFW Teener tournament and was already automatically qualified, the region bid in the state tournament went to Dell Rapids 15s after finishing second in regions.

The state tournament will be held in Humboldt August 7-9.

15-16 Teeners Add Two More Wins

The Dell Rapids 15/16 Teeners picked up two more wins recently. Dell Rapids defected Sioux Falls Christian 10-2 on Monday, July 8th, and Humboldt/Hartford 16’s 9-0 on Thursday, July 11th. Dell Rapids now improves to 13-5 on the year and 9-3 in the I-29 League. They are currently tied for second in the 14-team league.

Dell Rapids scored four in the first and six in the sixth inning to pull away from SF Christian at Harmodon Park in Sioux Falls.

Casey Hansen doubled and singled to lead the offense. Riley Jurgensen hit two singles. Brett Mogen doubled, and six players added a single in the 11-hit effort: Jase Nelson, Riley Schmidt, Ben Gillogly, Zach Schroeder, Beau Carpenter and Ryan Geraets.

Adam Karst picked up a win with three innings of no-hit ball. He walked two and struck out two. Ty Hoglund followed with two innings of relief. He struck out three while allowing one run on two hits and three walks. Hansen finished the final two innings. He gave up one run on three hits and a walk.

Dell Rapids 9, Humboldt/Hartford 16’s 0

Mogen and Schmidt combined on a one-hitter to shut out Humboldt/Hartford 16’s 9-0. Mogen pitched the first four innings and gave up a single while striking out six. Schmidt finished the last three innings and yielded a walk while striking out four.

Schroeder led the offense with three RBI on a single. Hoglund, Karst, Schmidt, Mogen and Hansen all singled for Dell Rapids.

Dell Rapids is at Salem on Monday, July 15 to face the top team in the I-29 League. Salem/Montrose/Canova is 12-0 in league play. Madison Red-16 visits Dell Rapids on Thursday, July 18 for a 7:00 p.m. game.
