Mudcats Notch Second League Win

The Dell Rapids Mudcats broke a 2-2 tie and scored five runs in a row in a 7-2 win over the Humboldt/Hartford Gamecocks on Thursday, May 19th at Rickeman Field.

Humboldt/Hartford scored right away in the top of the first on a passed ball.  Ty Hoglund and Chad Hunt scored, and Josh Roemen had an RBI to give Dell Rapids a 2-1 lead after the first inning.  The Gamecocks tied the game in the top of the fifth inning on an RBI single by Broc Haldeman.

The Mudcats regained the lead in the bottom of the fifth.  Hunt had an RBI triple, and Dalton Lehnen had an RBI double as Dell Rapids scored three times in the inning.  The Mudcats added two more runs in the bottom of the seventh on a two-run single by Trevor Freudenthal.

Ty Hoglund had three singles in the game.  Lehnen had two hits, one a double, and an RBI.  Mark Abrahamson also had two hits, including a double.  Hunt finished with a triple and an RBI.  Freudenthal finished with a hit and two RBIs.  Roemen had a single and an RBI.  Jimmy Bauer had two singles in the game.  Logan Stone and Elijah Story each had a hit as well.

Abrahamson got the win on the mound pitching five innings while allowing two runs on five hits with four strikeouts.  Kris Regas got a four-inning save by not allowing a hit and striking out 11 batters.

The Mudcats will host the Humboldt/Hartford Wood Ducks on Sunday, May 22nd at 5:00 p.m.

Mudcats Win 2022 Cornbelt League Opener

The Dell Rapids Mudcats won their 2022 Cornbelt League season opener on Sunday, May 15th at Rickeman Field.  The Mudcats held off a rally by the Colman A’s for a 7-5 victory.

The Mudcats got on the board early with two runs in the bottom of the first inning.  Mark Abrahamson had an RBI double and Dalton Lehnen followed with an RBI single.  Kris Regas added to the Mudcat lead with a solo home run in the bottom of the second inning.

Colman got a run in the top of the fourth inning, but the Mudcats answered with two more runs in their half of the fourth.  Grant Olson had an RBI single, and Trevor Freudenthal scored on a wild pitch.  Both teams scored two runs in the fifth inning.  Josh Roemen and Lehnen each had RBI doubles in the inning, and the Mudcats led 7-3.  Colman scored two more times in the top of the eighth inning, but couldn’t get any rally started in the ninth.

Lehnen had three hits, including a double, and two RBIs.  Ty Hoglund had three singles.  Regas had a home run and an RBI.  Roemen and Abrahamson each had a double and an RBI.  Olson finished with a single and an RBI.  Freudenthal also had a hit. Lehnen pitched three innings allowing just one hit while striking out six to earn the win.  Dalton Allen pitched three innings and allowed three runs on three hits with five strikeouts.  John Speath pitched 1 1/3 innings allowing two runs on three hits with a strikeout.  Regas pitched 1 2/3 innings striking out four batters.

Dell Rapids Bowling Drops Last Two Regularly Scheduled Matches

The Dell Rapids High School Club bowling team has has a busy month of February.  They have had two regularly scheduled matches as well as two make-up matches.  Their regularly scheduled matches were against Yankton on Friday, February 4th and Canton on Friday, February 11th.

Yankton defeated Dell Rapids in all three games by scores of 1152-883, 1458-871, and 1706-956.  Bryce Janiszeski had a series of 501 (162, 167, 172). Ryder VanZee had a 500 series (162, 178, 160).  Dylan Aker had a 471 (153, 130, 188), while Oscar Anderson had a 470 (171, 151, 148).  Zander Heathcote had a series of 415 (131, 133, 151), and Orran O’Meara had a series of 353 (104, 112, 137).  Adaya Penning had a 287 (85, 88, 114) for the girls team.

On February 11th Canton also defeated Dell Rapids in all three games by scores of 1006-821, 951-920, and 1109-1022.  Ashton Schaaf had the high series of 518 (161, 167, 190).  Janiszeski had a 516 series (182, 161, 172).  Anderson finished with 449 (125, 148, 176).  VanZee had a 437 series (114, 149, 174).  Caden Bitzer had a series of 434 (107, 159, 168).  Aker had a 409 (131, 136, 142).  Penning had a 430 series (132, 179, 119).

Dell Rapids also had make-up matches on February 1st and February 8th, but no results were available on the league website.

Brookings Beats Dell Rapids in Bowling Match

The Dell Rapids High School club bowling team traveled to Brookings for a match on Friday, January 28th.  Brookings won the match winning all three games by scores of 1026-945, 1129-944, and 1042-846.

Ashton Schaaf had the high series for Dell Rapids at 547 (157, 209, 181).  Oscar Anderson had a 486 series (189, 169, 128).  Caden Bitzer finished with 470 (176, 141, 153).  Bryce Janiszeski had a 451 series (189, 140, 122).  Ryder VanZee had a 400 (121, 135, 144), and Jake Dearduff finished with a 381 series (113, 150, 118).  Adaya Penning had a 294 series (100, 96, 98) for the girls varsity team.

Dell Rapids is now 1-8 on the season with six game wins.

Dell Rapids Club Bowling Team Gets First Match Win of Season

The Dell Rapids High School club bowling team earned their first match win of the season on Friday, January 21st.  Dell Rapids hosted McCook Central/Montrose at Pinz.  Dell Rapids won all three games by scores of 891-682, 974-758, and 866-682.

Ashton Schaaf had a 517 (185, 189, 143) series.  Ryder VanZee finished with 483 (146, 183, 154).  Caden Bitzer had a 471 series (155, 160, 156).  Oscar Anderson finished with 446 (125, 184, 137).  Bryce Janiszeski had 417 (161, 132, 124), and Noah Larson had a 397 series (119, 126, 152).  Adaya Penning had a 230 series (79, 106, 46) from the girls team.

Dell Rapids is now 1-7 on the season with six game wins.

Dell Rapids Bowling Drops Match to Brandon Valley

After taking a break for a couple of weeks during the Christmas holiday, the Dell Rapids high school club bowling team was back in action on Friday, January 7th at Eastway Bowl.  Dell Rapids lost 0-3 to Brandon Valley.  The Lynx won by scores of 840-780, 872-720, and 987-713.

Ashton Schaaf had the high three-game score of 546 (182, 187, 177).  Caden Bitzer had a 386 series (140, 137, 109).  Ryder VanZee finished with a 360 (114, 124, 122).  Zander Heathcote had a 354 (140, 108, 106).  OScar Anderson had a 301 series (103, 85, 113), and Noah Larson finished with a 266 (101, 79, 86).

Adaya Penning was the lone varsity girls bowler for Dell Rapids.  She finished with game scores of 80, 83, and 112.

Dell Rapids will host West Central at Pinz on Friday, January 14th for their next match.

Dell Rapids Bowling Falls to Sioux Falls Jefferson

The Dell Rapids high school club bowling team won one game against Sioux Falls Jefferson, but dropped the match 2-1 on Thursday, December 16th at Sport Bowl in Sioux Falls.  Sioux Falls Jefferson won the first game 1053-868 and then the second game 1192-985.  Dell Rapids took the third game 1062-993.

Bryce Janiszeski had a 559 series (134, 173, 252).  Zander Heathcote finished with 538 (118, 206, 214).  Ashton Schaaf had 514 (173, 173, 168).  Noah Larson finished the match with 449 (182, 142, 125).  Caden Bitzer finished with 443 (142, 152, 149), and Oscar Anderson had 412 (119, 139, 154).

Adaya Penning was the only varsity bowler for the girls team.  She finished with a three-game total of 259 (85, 105, 69).

Dell Rapids will continue their season on January 8th at 3:30 p.m. against Brandon at Eastway Bowl.

Dells Bowling Hosted Sioux Falls Roosevelt

The Dell Rapids high school bowling team hosted Sioux Falls Roosevelt on Friday, December in Week five of the season.  The boys team fell 2-1 to Roosevelt in three close games.  The girls team only had one bowler and officially lost to Roosevelt 3-0.

The boys won the first game against Roosevelt 901-839, but they fell in the next two games (893-970 and 888-907).  Adaya Penning had games of 60, 121, and 95 for the girls varsity team.

Bryce Janiszeski finished with a 516 three-game series (134, 195, 187).  Ashton Schaaf finished with 485 (197, 154, 134).  Caden Bitzer had a 480 (168, 133, 179).  Oscar Anderson finished with a 439 (159, 150, 130).  Ryder VanZee had a 434 (148, 139, 147), and Noah Larson finished with 328 (95, 122, 111).

The boys team is 0-5 on the season with two game wins.  The girls team is 0-4 currently.  Dell Rapids will host Sioux Falls Washington on Friday, December 10th in their next match.

Dell Rapids Softball Finishes Second at State Tournament

The Dell Rapids high school club softball team finished as the 2021 South Dakota Class B Runner-Up after seven games on Saturday, October 2nd and Sunday, October 3rd in Sioux Falls.

West Central 11, Dell Rapids 0

Dell Rapids was the fourth seed in the tournament and opened the tournament against West Central on Saturday.   West Central scored four times in the first inning and rolled from there scoring two more in the third inning and five more in the sixth.  Dell Rapids was held to just four hits in the game.   Lexi Ingalls, Claire Wynja, Kenzie Garry, and Jaycee Tebay all had singles in the game.  Katie Kvigne pitched one inning allowing four runs, all unearned, on three hits with one walk and one strikeout.  Kya Alderson pitched five innings allowing seven runs, all unearned, on seven hits with three walks and two strikeouts.

Dell Rapids 18, Lennox 2

Having lost the opening game, Dell Rapids had to play through the loser’s bracket the rest of the tournament.  That journey started with an 18-2 win over Lennox.   Dell Rapids scored 10 times in the first inning, two in the second, and six in the third while belting 14 hits.  Ingalls had four hits and an RBI.  Wynja had two hits, a home run and double, and five RBIs.  Katie Scherff had two hits, including a home run, and three RBIs.  Alderson had two hits and two RBIs.  Rileigh Foster also had two hits and two RBIs.  Tebay finished with a triple and single with an RBI.  Garry also added an RBI.  Alderson pitched three innings allowing two earned runs on three hits with three walks and a strikeout.

Dell Rapids 14, Baltic 2

The first of five games on Sunday started with a 14-2 win over Baltic.  Baltic had a 2-1 lead after the first inning.  Dell Rapids tied the game top of the third on an RBI single by Garry.  Dell Rapids then exploded for 12 runs in the fourth for the win.  Garry had three hits, one a double, and three RBIs.  Ingalls had three hits, one a home run, and two RBIs.  Wynja had a double and single with two RBIs.  Alderson also had a double and a single with two RBIs.  Kylie Lebahn had a hit and an RBI.  Foster and Scherff both had singles.  Alderson pitched three innings allowing two earned runs on three hits with three strikeouts.  Kvigne pitched an inning striking out one batter.

Dell Rapids 15, Douglas 4

Dell Rapids scored 12 runs over the first two innings for an early 12-0 run on their way to a 15-4 win over Douglas in their second game on Sunday.  Scherff finished with three singles and two RBIs.  Foster had two hits and four RBIs.  Haileigh Barnhart had two hits, one a home run, and three RBIs.  Ingalls had two singles and two RBIs.  Wynja had a double and single and an RBI.  Garry added a single and two RBIs.  Tebay and Alderson both had a hit.  Kvigne pitched four innings allowing four runs, one earned, on six hits with one walk and four strikeouts.

Dell Rapids 19, Sturgis 8

Dell Rapids and Sturgis combined for 27 runs and 29 hits in a 19-8 win for Dell Rapids.  Strugis led 3-1 after the first inning, but Dell Rapids scored the next 14runs for a 15-3 lead heading into the bottom of the fourth.  Sturgis scored four times in the fourth for a 15-7 score.  Dell Rapids added four runs in the fifth, and Strugis scored once.  Wynja had four hits, two home runs and two doubles, along with 10 RBIs.  Ingalls had three hits, one a double.  Garry finished with a home run and a single with three RBIs.  Foster had two singles and two RBIs.  Scherff had a double and single with two RBIs.  Tebay had two hits, one double, with an RBI.  Alderson had a single and RBI, and Barnhart had a single.  Alderson pitched all five innings allowing eight runs, seven earned, on 12 hits with two strikeouts.

Dell Rapids 9, Tea 1

Dell Rapids scored nine straight runs over the first three innings in a 9-1 win over Tea to put them into the championship game.  Tebay had a home run and triple with two RBIs.  Wynja had a double and single with three RBIs.  Scherff finished with two hits.  Foster had a single and two RBIs.  Ingalls added a double and an RBI.  Lebahn had a single, and Barnhart had an RBI.  Alderson earned the win pitching five innings allowing an unearned run on four hits with three walks and three strikeouts.

West Central 10, Dell Rapids 0

In the fifth game of the day, Dell Rapids met West Central for the second time in the tournament, this time for the championship.  West Central scored six first inning runs and added four more in the next two innings.  Dell Rapids was held to just three hits in the game.  Wynja had two of the three hits, while Lebahn had the other.  Alderson pitched 1 1/3 innings allowing nine runs, eight earned, on eight hits with a walk and strikeout.  Kvigne pitched 1 2/3 innings allowing an earned run on three hits with two strikeouts.

Dell Rapids finished the season with a 13-4 overall record.  All four losses on the season were to West Central, two in the regular season and two in the state tournament.

Dell Rapids Softball Finishes Regular Season at Home

The Dell Rapids high school club softball team had their final two regular season games at home on Sunday, September 26th.  Dell Rapids played Dakota Valley, ending in a 5-5 tie.  They then played West Central losing by a score of 11-1.

Dakota Valley scored a run in the top of the first inning for an early 1-0 lead, but Dell Rapids plated five runs in the bottom of the first inning.  Claire Wynja had a two-run inside-the-park home run.  Kya Alderson had a two-run double, and then scored one batter later on a dropped third strike.  The score remained 5-1 until the top of the fourth.  Dakota Valley scored four times to tie the game 5-5.  The game ended in a 5-5 tie after five complete innings of play.

Wynja had a home run and two RBIs.  Alderson had a double and two RBIs.  Jaycee Tebay had a double, and Lexi Ingalls had a single.  Katie Kvigne pitched 4 1/3 innings allowing five runs, four earned, on eight hits with one walk and four strikeouts.  Alderson pitched the final 2/3 of an inning striking out a batter.

In the second game, West Central scored first with a run in the bottom of the first inning.  Tebay tied the game with an inside-the-park home run in the top of the second inning.  West Central took the lead with another run in the bottom of the third inning, but then scored nine times in the bottom of the fourth to end the game on the 10-run rule.

Tebay had a home run and an RBI.  Wynja had a double, and Ingalls and Alderson each had a single.  Alderson pitched 3 2/3 innings allowing 11 runs, five earned, on seven hits with four walks and three strikeouts.

Dell Rapids end the regular season with a record of 7-2-1.  Their only two loses both came against West Central.
