Dell Rapids 15/16 Teeners Qualify for State

Dell Rapids qualified for the State VFW Class A 15/16 year-old tournament with a win in the region 3A championship game on Thursday, July 31, in Humboldt.  Dell Rapids will participate in the state tournament in Volga August 8-10.

Dell Rapids 2, West Central 1

Dell Rapids edged host West Central 2-1 in the championship game to qualify for state.

West Central took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning. Justin Sebert walked, stole second and scored on an RBI single by Joseph Hanisch. A strong throw from centerfielder Seth Andersen came close to getting Sebert at the plate.

Ty Hoglund pitched three strong innings for Dell Rapids to start the game. He allowed one run on one hit and struck out six.  Mason Peter came on in relief in the fourth inning and recorded three straight outs for Dell Rapids.

The Dell Rapids offense came alive in the top of the fourth. Casey Hansen singled up the middle and advanced to second on a walk by Hoglund. With one out Nate McKee singled to load the bases. Joel Brust drew a walk to force in the tying run. Dawson Kerzman put Dell Rapids ahead for good with a sharp single to centerfield to score Hoglund for a 2-1 lead. West Central ended the threat when Nick Hoffman’s line drive hit to centerfield was fired to second base for a force out.

Brett Mogen came on to close the final three innings for Dell Rapids. He retired all nine batters he faced.  He struck out three. Second baseman Reese Warne made an over the shoulder catch with one out in the final inning to keep West Central from mounting a rally.

West Central was held to two hits. Dell Rapids came up with four hits. Hoglund tripled while McKee, Hansen and Kerzman all singled.

Dell Rapids 7, Colton/Crooks 3

Dell Rapids outlasted Crooks/Colton in the second round on Wednesday, July 30.

C/C struck first when Logan Larson singled and eventually scored on a wild pitch. They added a second run when Alex Gonzelez singled, stole second and scored on a double by Larson.

Dell Rapids answered with three runs in the bottom of the second. Kerzman singled and advanced to third on Eric Klein’s double. Nick Hoffman got Kerzman home on a ground out. A single by Seth Andersen and a walk by Hansen allowed both Klein and Hoffman to score to give Dell Rapids a 3-2 lead after two innings.

One run in the fifth and two more in the sixth helped Dell Rapids pull away with a 7-2 lead. Mogen scored in the fifth. Hoffman and Andersen both scored in the sixth. All three runs were created by walks.

Dell Rapids managed only four hits but collected 11 walks.

Winning pitcher Trey Randel pitched the first four innings for Dell Rapids. He gave up two runs, three hits, four walks and struck out two. Trevor Pulscher pitched the final three innings and was credited with a save. He allowed three hits, one unearned run and struck out five.

Klein had two hits for Dell Rapids. Andersen and Kerzman both singled.

Dell Rapids 3, West Central 2

It took eight innings for Dell Rapids to overtake West Central in the opening game of the tournament on Wednesday, July 30.

Mogen scored the winning run on a failed pickoff attempt at third base with one out in the bottom of the eighth inning for the win.

West Central scored first in the top of fourth inning. Justin Sebert was hit with a pitch and advanced to second and then third on a steal and sacrifice bunt. He scored on a suicide squeeze bunt executed by Tyler Renken.  West Central extended its lead to 2-0 when Jason Steckley scored on a double by Sebert.

Dell Rapids tied the game with two runs in the bottom of the sixth. Brust walked and Mogen reached on an infield error. Both scored after Kerzman reached on an infield error and Randel hit a sacrifice fly.

Hoglund pitched the first four innings and recorded eight strikeouts while allowing one run on one hit.  Mogen pitched the final four innings. He allowed one run on four hits and struck out four.

15-16 Teeners Pick up 11th Win of Season

The Dell Rapids A Teeners (ages 15/16) stretched its record to 11-5 recently.

Dell Rapids 11, Madison 15’s 7

Dell Rapids pounded out 13 hits to outscore Madison 15’s 11-7 on Monday, July 1.

Ryan Geraets and Casey Hansen led the offense. They both ripped a double and two singles. Brett Mogen contributed a double and single. Riley Jurgensen singled twice. Ben Gillogly, Matthew Juba and Jase Nelson each added a hit.

Jurgensen picked up the win by going three innings. He allowed two runs on one hit and struck out three. Nelson pitched two innings of relief. He gave up three hits and two runs and struck out four. Juba followed with 1 2/3 innings of relief. He allowed three runs on four hits and struck out one. Mogen picked up a save. He faced one batter who flew out to left. Juba fired to Beau Carpenter at third to record a game-ending double play.


Pipestone 10, Dell Rapids 6

A late rally came up short as Pipestone broke Dell Rapids’ 8-game win streak on Tuesday, July 2.

Pipestone used eight walks and nine hits to build a 10-0 lead after the top of the fourth inning. Dell Rapids responded with five runs in the bottom of the fourth and one more in the fifth, but the threat ended as Pipestone shut out the home team in the sixth and seventh innings.

Geraets, Zach Schroeder, Carpenter and Joel Brust each had two hits apiece for Dell Rapids. Gillogly and Nelson each added a single. Schroeder, Carpenter and Ty Hoglund shared pitching duties. Hoglund struck out six of the final nine outs to keep the game close.

Dell Rapids is at home versus Humboldt/Hartford 16’s on Thursday, July 11 at 7:00 p.m.

15-16 Teeners on Seven Game Win Streak

The Dell Rapids A Teeners (ages 15/16) are on a 7-game win streak and have a 10-4 season record.

I-29 League Tournament

Dell Rapids posted a 4-1 record in the mid-season tournament to claim third place June 21-23.

Garretson 6, Dell Rapids 4

Four runs by Garretson in the top of the first inning was too much for Dell Rapids to overcome in the second round of the tournament. Three hits and two errors staked Garretson to a 4-0 lead. Dell Rapids answered with two runs in the top of the first before a storm suspended play for two hours. Ty Hoglund and Tanner Ljunggren both had two hits. Ryan Geraets, Riley Schmidt, Ben Gillogly and Riley Jurgensen each singled. Brett Mogen took the pitching loss in four innings of work. Schmidt threw two innings of relief.

Dell Rapids 13, Volga 2

Dell Rapids bounced back with 13 hits against Volga coupled with solid defense. Matt Juba paced the offense with two singles, a double and two runs batted in. Hoglund and Adam Karst both had two hits. Schmidt, Mogen, Zach Schroeder, Beau Carpenter, Ishmael Lucero and Casey Hansen all had singles. Karst got the pitching win with three innings of work. Hoglund finished the final two innings.

Dell Rapids 5, Madison 16’s 0

Schmidt blanked Madison for five innings from the mound to beat the host team 5-0. He struck out six and walked none while surrendering four hits. Jurgensen pitched the final shutout inning. Schmidt also led the offense with two doubles and a single. Hoglund singled twice. Gillogly, Carpenter, Jurgensen and Hansen each singled.

Dell Rapids 4, Humboldt 15’s 3

Schmidt’s walk-off RBI single ended the tournament with a 4-3 Dell Rapids win over the Humboldt 15’s. In the final inning Hansen singled, moved to third on Hoglund’s single and scored on Schmidt’s hit. Gillogly and Schroeder both added singles. Hoglund pitched the first five innings. He gave up four hits and struck out two. Jurgensen pitched the final two innings of shutout ball to get the win.

Dell Rapids 15, Tri-Valley 0

Dell Rapids capitalized on seven walks, seven wild pitches and five steals to win at home June 27 in a three inning regular season game.  Juba pitched the first two scoreless innings and Jase Nelson struck out two  hitters in the third to lead the pitching staff. Juba also doubled to lead the offense.  Mogen, Geraets, Gillogly, Jurgensen, Carpenter and Nelson all singled.

 

Humboldt Firecracker Tournament June 28—30

Dell Rapids claimed the title with three wins this weekend.

Dell Rapids 12, Salem/Canova/Montrose 2

Dell Rapids broke out with four runs in the second inning and pulled away for the opening game win. Mogen pitched four innings for the win. Schmidt shut out S/M/C for two innings to finish. Schmidt hit a grand slam in the fifth along with a single. Mogen hit two singles and three RBI. Hoglund, Karst, Carpenter, Geraets and Lucero all singled.

Dell Rapids 6, Vermillion 0

Hoglund pitched a complete game shutout to win the second round game. He gave up four hits, four walks and struck out 11. Schmidt homered for the second time in the tournament. He finished with three hits and four RBI. Hoglund and Karst both singled and doubled. Schroeder, Carpenter and Hansen added singles.

Dell Rapids 13, Tyndall 7

Dell Rapids outhit Tyndall 12 to 6 to win the championship. Schroeder paced Dell Rapids with three hits and three RBI. Karst, Schmidt and Carpenter added two hits each. Hoglund, Gillogly and Geraets singled. Schmidt pitched the first four innings. He gave up five runs on four hits while striking out four. Mogen pitched the final three innings and earned a save. He gave up two runs on two hits.
