Leon Maxwell earned two more victories and won the 220-pound weight class State A Tournament Championship. In his first match on Saturday, Maxwell pinned Trey Crisp-Peterson of Sioux Falls Washington to earn a spot in the championship match. In that match Maxwell won the championship on a 9-2 decision over Dalton Cox of Aberdeen Central.
Dell Rapids finished 16th with a team score of 35.00. Aberdeen Central won the team championship with a score of 177.50.
Friday, February 28th
The first day of the 2014 State A Wrestling Tournament in Rapid City has completed. Five wrestlers from Dell Rapids had qualified for the state tournament.
In the 113-pound weight class, Scott Warwick was pinned in his first match against Tyler Waterson of Spearfish. Warwick then lost his next match against Kyle Seibel of Vermillion in a 9-3 decision.
In the 160-pound weight class, Austin Eulberg was pinned by Kasey Klapprodt of Rapid City Stevens. Eulberg picked up a pin in his next match over Brandon Hertz of Vermillion. However, Eulberg lost a 12-1 major decision to Tate McVay of Sturgis in his final match of the tournament.
In the 170-pound weight class, Brock Reinhiller was pinned in his opening match by John Frisco of Aberdeen Central. Reinhiller earned a 4-2 OT decision over Lane Warzecha of Harrisburg in his second match. Reinhiller then lost an 8-3 decision to Shane O’Connell of Rapid City Central.
In the 220-pound weight class, Leon Maxwell pinned Max Broken Nose of Pine Ridge. Maxwell then picked up another pin later in the day over Chase Klingaman of Mitchell. Maxwell is in the semifinal round of the 220-pound weight class.
In the 285-pound weight class, Jacob Habeger was pinned by Dylan Bennett of Pierre in his first match. Habeger then pinned Nate DeWitt of Lennox in his second match of the day. But in the final match, Habeger was pinned by John Wilson of Sturgis.
Dell Rapids as a team is in 17th place with a team score of 18.
