De Smet Football Celebrates Homecoming with Win

The De Smet Bulldog football team ended homecoming week with a tough, hard-fought win over the Wolsey-Wessington Warbirds on Friday, September 15th.  The Bulldogs took the lead in the first quarter and held for a 14-6 win.

With 3:30 to play in the opening quarter, Britt Carlson connected with Tom Aughenbaugh on a 26-yard touchdown pass.  Melville Deloye made the extra point for an early 7-0 lead.  The Warbirds got a score on a five-yard touchdown pass with 5:37 left in the first half.  The two-point conversion was no good, and De Smet continued to lead 7-6.  The score remained 7-6 at halftime.

The Bulldogs got a big score with 2:00 to go in the third quarter.  Carlson scored on a four-yard run.  Deloye made the extra point for a 14-6 lead.  The De Smet defense held tough in the fourth quarter, stopping the Warbirds in the red zone on their last drive of the game to secure the win.

The Bulldogs had 112 yards of total offense, 61 rushing yards and 51 passing yards.  Wolsey-Wessington had 306 yards of total offense, 213 rushing yards and 93 passing yards.

Carlson had five carries for 42 yards and a touchdown.  Ganono Henrich had seven carries for 11 yards, and Kadyn Fast had nine runs for eight yards.  Carlson was 4-9 passing for 51 yards and a touchdown.  Aughenbaugh had three catches for 51 yards and a touchdown.  Gannon Gilligan led the defense with 10 tackles.  Carlson had seven tackles and a sack.  Trace Van Regenmorter finished with six tackles.  Slayten Wilkinson had five tackles and a sack.
