Hamlin Spoils Home Opener for St Mary

The Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals hosted their first home football game of the season on Friday, August 25th.  The visiting Hamlin Chargers spoiled the home opener with a 42-6 victory.

The Chargers scored all 42 of their points before St Mary was able to get on the board.  Tyson Stevenson had two rushing touchdowns, and Jackson Wadsworth had one in the first quarter for a 21-0 lead.  Tyson Stevenson had a passing touchdowns to Turner Stevenson, and then Tyson Stevenson had another rushing touchdown before halftime to push the lead to 35-0.  Evan Stormo had the final score for the Chargers midway through the fourth quarter.  The lone touchdown for St Mary came with 6:51 to play in the game.  Thomas LaVoy had a 59-yard run.

The Cardinals finished with 229 yards of total offense, 152 rushing yards and 77 passing yards.  The Chargers, meanwhile, had 361 yards of offense, 207 rushing yards and 154 passing yards.

Trimmier Hanson had eight carries for 29 yards.  Nic Gaspar finished with five carries for 19 yards.    LaVoy had three rushes for 62 yards and a touchdown.  Jaxon Baumberger had three carries for 23 yards, and Jake Heinitiz had two runs for 10 yards.  Hanson was 7-20 passing for 77 yards and two interceptions.  Gaspar had two catches for 49 yards.  Lincoln LeBrun had three catches for 20 yards, and Lucas Flemmer had two receptions for eight yards.

“The boys played hard tonight.  Hamlin is a good team.  We learned a lot about who we are.  I liked the fact we played more physically tonight and did a lot of good things,” said head coach Ross Flemmer.
