The Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal girls winning streak reach seven games after an overtime win against the Castlewood Warriors on Tuesday, January 17th.
The game was close throughout the entirety, but each team did have a sizable lead at certain points. Castlewood had the first bigger lead at 9-2 in the first quarter. The Cardinals ended the first quarter trailing 9-5, and then got hot in the second quarter. St Mary ended the first half with a 28-22 lead.
Momentum carried into the early part of the third quarter for the Cardinals. They scored the first four points and led 32-22 with 6:45 to go in the quarter. The Warriors rallied and cut the lead to 36-34 after hitting a buzzer-beater to end the third quarter. St Mary got the lead back to six, 44-38, with under two minutes to play, but Castlewood hit two three-pointers to the the game and send it to overtime.
In the overtime period, the Warriors made the first three-point shot for a 47-44 lead. The Cardinals followed with back-to-back three-pointers by Whitney Warwick. Sydney Klein made a layup on a fast break, and the Cardinals led 52-47. Castlewood made another three-point shot to cut the lead to 52-50. After some missed free throws by St Mary, the Warriors had a chance to tie the game in the closing seconds. Ella Griffin secured the win with a steal of an inbounds pass after a timeout.
The Cardinals shot 38% (19-50) overall in the game, 30% (9-30) from three-point area, but only 36% (5-14) from the free-throw line.
Griffin had 17 points, 10 rebounds, and five assists. Madala Hanson had 12 points, four rebounds, three assists, and seven steals. Klein had nine points, five rebounds, three assists, and two steals. Warwick also had nine points. Maya Heinitz had three points, three rebounds, and two assists. Addison Libis finished with two points.
