Bulldogs Continue to Roll with Win over Trojans

The Madison Bulldogs remained undefeated after a 27-7 win over the West Central Trojans in Hartford on Thursday, October 14th.

Madison got on the board in the first quarter with 3:46 to go.  They added two more scores in the second quarter.  Trey Smith had a three-yard run with 11:31 to go in the quarter.  Nate Ricke added a four-yard touchdown run with 2:23 on the clock.  The Bulldogs led 21-0 at halftime.

Neither team scored in the third quarter, and the Bulldogs scored first in the fourth quarter.  Ricke threw a 10-yard touchdown pass to Mickale Dohrer with 7:31 in the game.  The Trojans got their touchdown with 5:38 to play in the game.  Gavin Koch threw a 15-yard touchdown pass to Owen Heath.  Tommy Berg made the extra point.

The Trojans were held to just nine first downs in the game.  West Central had 168 yards of total offense, 129 passing yards and 39 rushing yards.  Madison had a total of 281 yards of offense.

Koch finished 12-27 passing for 129 yards, one touchdown, and two interceptions.  Braden Dierickx had six catches for 50 yards.  Heath had three catches for 55 yards and a touchdown.  Justin Zirpel carried the ball 13 times for 47 yards.  Dierickx had four rushes for 22 yards.  Logan Maras had 14 tackles to lead the defense.  Tommy Berg finished with eight tackles, and Dalton Mulder had six tackles.

The Trojans (4-4) will travel to Tea on Thursday, October 21st.

Titans Defeat Trojans in Volleyball Match

The West Central Trojans fell to the Mt Vernon/Plankinton Titans at home on Thursday, October 14th.  The Titans won in straight sets by scores of 25-15, 25-20, and 25-16.

Hanna Lee had 18 set assists and three blocks.  Grace Harden finished with eight kills.  Jenna Lueth added 15 digs.

West Central will play in the Dak-12 Conference Tournament in Tea on Saturday, October 16th.

Both Trojan Cross Country Teams Finish Fourth at Region Meet

Both the West Central Trojan girls and boys cross country teams finished fourth at the Region 2A meet in Madison on Thursday, October 14th.  Both teams just missed qualifying everyone for the state meet as the top three teams qualify for state.

Two runners for the girls team qualified for state individually with a top 20 finish.  Aubrey Borns was 17th with a time of 21:42.27.  Maelee Krempges was 18th in a time of 21:43.00.  Drew Caffrey (23rd) had a time of 22:55.46.  Ellie McDonald (28th) finished in 23:21.07, and Elizabeth Johnson (34th) finished in 24:35.10.

The boys team had three individual qualifiers to state.  Ben Strunk finished ninth with a time of 18:04.14.  Jacob Peterson was 12th with a time of 18:28.30.  Jonathon Roth placed 20th in a time of 18:53.17.  Griffin Stallman (31st) finished with a time of 20:07.91.  Blake Stark (39th) had a time of 20:46.27, and Josh Wagner (42nd) had a time of 20:57.79.

The 2021 South Dakota Class A State Cross Country Meet will be held at Yankton Trail Park in Sioux Falls on Saturday, October 23rd.

West Central Volleyball Suffers Loss at Chester

The West Central Trojan volleyball team suffered a straight-set loss at the Chester Flyers on Tuesday, October 12t.  Chester took the match by set scores of 25-13, 25-13, and 25-10.

Grace Harden led the team with six kills.  Jocelyn Nilson and McKenna Sichmeller both had two ace serves each.  Hanna Lee had 16 set assists and a block.  Sichmeller also had a block.  Jenna Lueth had a team-high 10 digs.

The Trojans also lost their previous match to the McCook Central/Montrose Fighting Cougars at home on Thursday, October 7th.  The Trojans lost in straight sets by scores of 25-18, 25-17, and 25-12.

West Central (6-12) will host the Mt Vernon/Plankinton Titans on Thursday, October 14th.

Vermillion Survives in Win over West Central

In a battle of top five teams in Class 11A, the #4 Vermillion Tanagers held on for a 28-26 win over the #3 West Central Trojans on Friday, October 8th in Vermillion.

The Tanagers got on the board first on a five-yard run by Jeremy Crowe with 5:56 to play in the opening quarter.  The extra point was good for a 7-0 lead.  Vermillion struck again with 10:38 to play in the second quarter.  Jack Kratz scored on a one-yard touchdown.  The extra point was no good, and Vermillion led 13-0. 

West Central got on the board after 40-yard wide receiver screen pass from Gavin Koch to Braden Dierickx with 8:42 to go in the first half.  Tommy Berg made the extra point to make the score 13-7.  The Trojans tied the game with :38 to play in the first half on a one-yard touchdown run by Logan Maras.  Berg made the extra point again to give West Central a 14-13.  The fireworks were not over in the first half just yet.  Vermillion regained the lead after a two-yard pass from Kratz to Mehki Sheffield in the final seconds of the second quarter.  They made a two-point conversion to take a 21-14 lead at halftime.

The Trojans scored first in the third quarter.  Koch connected with Dierickx for a 54-yard touchdown with 9:15 to go in the third quarter.  The extra point was no good, and Vermillion kept a 21-20 lead.  Kratz scored again for the Tanagers on a nine-yard run with 3:59 in the third quarter.  The extra point was good, and Vermillion led 28-20.  The score remained 28-20 heading into the fourth quarter.

Koch and Dierickx connected again for a touchdown with just under nine minutes to go in the game.  This time the pass was from four yards.  The Trojans went for the two-point conversion, but did not make it.  Vermillion hung on to the lead, 28-26.  West Central’s final drive of the game ended on a turnover on downs with 1:12 to go in the game on the Vermillion 41 yard line. 

Koch finished 21-37 passing for 215 yards, three touchdowns, and two interceptions.  Dierickx had 12 catches for 163 yards and three touchdowns.  Jacob Krempges had four catches for 29 yards, and Owen Heath had three catches for 17 yards.  Koch also had seven carries for 32 yards.  Justin Zirpel added 11 carries for 30 yards.  Maras had two rushes for three yards and a touchdown. 

Maras led the defense for West Central with 17 tackles.  Dylan Stromer had 11 tackles.  Thomas Berg finished with five tackles, and Dierickx, Zach Madsen, and Chet Carda all had four tackles each.

Trojan Girls 4th, Boys 6th at Dak-12 Cross Country Meet

The West Central Trojan girls and boys cross country teams took part in the Dak-12 Conference meet on Thursday, October 7th in Dell Rapids.  The girls team finished fourth, and the boys team finished sixth on the day.

The girls had a total of 76 points.  Maelee Krempges finished 13th with a time of 21:42.27.  Aubrey Borns placed 18th in a time of 21:55.76.  Drew Caffrey and Wllie McDonald finished 24th and 25th respectively.  Caffrey had a time of 22:27.09, and McDonald finished in 22:41.78.  Elizabeth Johnson placed 37th in a time of 23:44.52.

The boys had a total of 96 points.  Ben Strunk placed 12th individually in a time of 17:57.14.  Jacob Peterson was 21st with a time of 18:33.72, barley beating teammate Jonathon Roth who finished in a time of 18:33.78.  Griffin Stallman (42nd) had a time of 20:26.76.  Josh Wagner (44th) finished in 20:33.17, and Blake Stark (46th) had a time of 20:42.94.

The Trojans will race in the Region 2A meet on Thursday, October 14th at the Madison Golf and Country Club.

West Central Boys Golf Team Takes Second at State Tournament

The West Central Trojan boys golf team ended a very successful 2021 season with a second place finish at the 2021 South Dakota Class A State Boys Golf Tournament in Madison on Monday, October 4th and Tuesday, October 5th.

The Trojans finished with a two-day team score of 674.  Tea Area narrowly took the top spot with a team score of 669.  Vermillion was third at 681.

Peyton Bettcher placed fourth individually with a two-day score of 159.  Anthony Lanham tied for 13th with a score of 167.  Trey Even also placed in the top 20 tying for 19th at 170.  Cole Miles tied for 27th with a score of 179.  Kamden Zomer finished tied for 37th at 183.

Trojans Drop Third Straight Road Match

The West Central Trojans played in their third straight road match on Tuesday, October 5th.  West Central traveled to Elkton to play the Elkton-Lake Benton Elks.  The Elks won in straight sets by scores of 25-18, 25-12, and 25-17.

Grace Harden finished with eight kills and an ace serve.  McKenna Sichmeller had a block and an ace serve.  Jenna Lueth led the team with 11 digs.  Hanna Lee added 20 set assists.

West Central (6-10) will be back home on Thursday, October 7th when they host the McCook Central/Montrose Cougars.

West Central Softball Wins Sixth Straight State Title

The West Central high school club softball team won their sixth straight Class B state title on Sunday, October 3rd.  The Trojans won all five of their games without allowing a single run all tournament long.

West Central  8, Dakota Valley  0

The first game was on Saturday, October 2nd.  West Central earned an 8-0 win over Dakota Valley.  The Trojans scored two runs in the first, four in the third, and two more in the fourth for the win.  Dakota Valley was held to just two hits.  Caitlyn Hoff had two home runs and four RBIs in the game.  Emillee Stofferahn had two hits and two RBIs.  Izzi Parsons also had two hits.  Jocelyn Nilson finished with a double.  McKenna Sichmeller had a hit and two RBIs, and Sammie Mallinger and Addy Kramer both had a single.  Mallinger pitched five innings allowing two hits while striking out 14 batters.

West Central 11, Dell Rapids 0

The second game on Saturday was an 11-0 win over Dell Rapids.  West Central scored four times in the top of the first and four more in the top of the third.  They put the game away with a five-run sixth inning.  The Trojans belted 11 hits and took advantage of seven Dell Rapids errors.  Stofferahn had three hits, including two doubles, and an RBI.  Hanna Raeethz had two hits and four RBIs.  Grace Harden and Sichmeller both had two hits.  Hoff had a hit and an RBI, and Nilson had a hit.  Mallinger pitched all six innings allowing just four hits with 13 strikeouts.

West Central 8, Sturgis 0

The final game on Saturday was against Sturgis.  West Central scored again in the first inning, scoring two times.  They added two more in the second for a 4-0 lead.  The Trojans then had a two-run fifth inning and two-run sixth inning for an 8-0 win.  Sturgis had just one hit in the game.  Hoff had two hits, including a home run, and four RBIs.  Harden had two hits, one a double.  Stofferahn had a double and two RBIs.  Kramer finished with a hit and two RBIs, and Caitlyn Maa had a single.  Mallinger pitched six more innings allowing just one hit with 17 more strikeouts.

West Central 7, Tea 0

West Central used a six-run first inning to defeat Tea 7-0 in the semifinals on Sunday, October 3rd.  The final run came in the sixth inning for West Central.  Mallinger again only allowed one hit while striking out 13 batters.  Mallinger also had three hits in the game, including a home run, and two RBIs.  Hoff had two hits and an RBI.  Harden and Parsons both had two singles each.  Nilson had a hit and RBI.  Kramer finished with a single, and Sichmeller had an RBI.

West Central 10, Dell Rapids 0

The Trojans met Dell Rapids again in the championship game.  Another six-run first inning set the tone for West Central.  They added three more in the second and another run in the third as the game ended after four innings.  Mallinger had three hits, two of those doubles, and an RBI.  Stofferahn had a double and home run with three RBIs.  Nilson had two doubles  and two RBIs.  Maa added two hits, including a home run, and two RBIs.  Kramer also had a home run and two RBIs.  Harden had  a double, and Hoff had a single.  Mallinger won her fifth game on the mound allowing only two hits while striking out nine.

Canton Snaps Trojan Four-Game Win Streak

The Canton C-Hawks snapped a four-game winning streak by the West Central Trojans on Friday, October 1st.  Canton won the defensive, low-scoring game 6-0 at Canton High School.  The Trojans now fall to 4-2 on the season.

Gavin Koch finished 13-30 passing for 135 yards and two interceptions.  Owen Heath had five catches for 89 yards.  Braden Dierickx had six receptions for 40 yards.  Justin Zirpel had 19 carries for 30 yards.

Logan Maras had 11 tackles to lead the defense.  Caden Hall had eight tackles.  Dalton Mulder finished with six tackles, and Chet Carda, Thomas Berg, and Dierickx all had five tackles each.

The Trojans travel to Vermillion to play the Tanagers on Friday, October 8th.
