Mustang Track Team Ready for Great Season

March 30, 2021 by Matt Larson, Big Sioux Media

Despite not having a season in 2020, the Tri-Valley Mustang track team still returns five state qualifiers from the 2019 team and also has two state qualifiers in cross country on the team.

Head coach Derik Fossum said, “We have a fun, competitive group that is really excited to get to compete in track and field after missing a season. They have really been working hard this spring. We have good depth throughout the event groups and should be able to put together some competitive relays. Above all else it will be fun to see these kids finally get the chance to show what they can do.”

Ella Pearson (Senior, discus), Jessica Masgai (Senior, triple jump), Alex Andresen (Senior, shot put), Levi Hanson (Senior, 4x100m and 4x200m relays), and Isaac McFarland (Junior, triple jump) all qualified for the state track meet in 2019.  Senior Nate Hargreaves and Sophomore Brie Peters qualified for the 2020 South Dakota State Cross Country Meet this past fall.

Tri-Valley will also have seniors Balyne Gacke, Nkiza David, Cheston Fowlds, Riley Haynes, Porter Jensen, Garret Leiseth, Victory Lopez, Owen Snethen, and Preston Wieman on the team.  Coach Fossum also mentioned that Steph Buchmann (Sophomore), Ava Pearson (Sophomore), Jaden Siemonsma (Junior), Michael Beyer (Junior), Connor Christensen (Junior), Dustin Sees (Sophomore), and Niyongabo Yohana (Sophomore) will be underclassmen to watch this spring.

Tri-Valley Girls Golf Looking to Have Season in 2021

March 30, 2021 by Matt Larson, Big Sioux Media

The Tri-Valley Mustang girls golf team is looking forward to the 2021 season.  This will be the first official season for head coach Brandon DeWitt.  DeWitt would have had his first season as the head girls golf coach last year, but the season was cancelled by the South Dakota High School Activities Association due to the Covid pandemic.

The Mustangs did not have a season in 2019 either, so this will be the first year that Coach DeWitt will see any of the players.  DeWitt mentioned that he’s not sure what the season will bring given the school did not have a team in 2019 and last year’s season was cancelled, but he’s looking forward to seeing how the season progresses.

DeWitt also coached the Mustang boys golf team this fall and helped lead them to a team-qualifying state appearance in Hot Springs in October.

Tri-Valley’s Run Ends in SoDak 16

March 10, 2021 by Matt Larson, Big Sioux Media

After making waves in Class A girls basketball by beating the #2 ranked West Central Trojans in the Region 3A tournament, the magical run for the Tri-Valley Mustangs came to an end in the SoDak 16 against the Winner Warriors on Thursday, March 4th.  The Warriors defeated Tri-Valley 50-35 in Wagner.

The Mustang game plan was a slow-paced tempo, and it worked as Tri-Valley held Winner to the second lowest point total of the season.  But the Warriors used a strong cull-court pressure defense to spark a game-clinching run in the third quarter.

Tri-Valley took an early 5-2 lead in the first quarter, but Winner went on a 7-4 run tying the game 9-9 at the end of the quarter.  The Warriors then outscored the Mustangs 19-10 in the second quarter for a 28-19 halftime lead.

Winner scored the first three points of the third quarter for a 31-19 lead.  Tri-Valley went on a 7-0 run to cut the Warrior lead to 31-26, but the Mustangs weren’t able to score again in the third quarter.  Winner finished the quarter on a 6-0 run for a 37-26 lead.  They also scored the first four points of the fourth quarter to push the lead to 41-26.  That 10-0 run was enough to secure the victory for Winner.

Tri-Valley’s season ends with a record of 13-10.

Mustang’s Season Comes to End in Region 3A

March 3, 2021 by Matt Larson, Big Sioux Media

The #4 seeded Tri-Valley Mustang boys hosted the #5 seeded Garretson Blue Dragons in the opening round of the Region 3A tournament on Tuesday, March 2nd.  The Mustang offense couldn’t get the shots to fall, and Garretson took the 53-46 upset win.

The Blue Dragons started hot by hitting their first three-point shots of the game.  They were able to build a lead in the first quarter they wouldn’t lose even though Tri-Valley rallied late in the game.

Garretson had the 13-12 advantage after the first quarter.  Neither team was able to make a field goal in the first four minutes of the second quarter, but once the offenses started rolling, the Blue Dragons took a 23-21 lead into halftime.

Tri-Valley continued to struggle on the offensive end in the second half.  Garretson went to the free-throw line 23 times in the second half and used that to build a 40-33 lead heading into the fourth quarter.  After a made three-pointer to open the fourth, the Blue Dragons had a game-high 10-point lead with 7:00 to go.  The Mustangs rallied and went on a 10-1 run to cut the lead to 44-43 with 2:03 on the clock.  Garretson responded with a 9-0 run, most of which from the free-throw line, to push the lead back to 10 points with :21 to go before a late Nick Hass three-pointer ended the game.

The Mustangs shot just 29% (14-48) from the field, 31% (8-26) from three-point area, and 56% (10-18) from the free-throw line.  Garretson finished 34% (14-41) from the field, 33% (5-15) from three-point area, but 71% (20-28) from the free-throw line.

Riley Haynes had 19 points, seven rebound, and two steals to lead Tri-Valley.  Hass finished with 12 points, six rebounds, six assists, and two steals.  Tyler Johnson had seven points, and Bryce Kienast had four points and five rebounds.

Tri-Valley’s season comes to an end with an overall record of 10-11.
