Mustangs Split Doubleheader in Canton

The Tri-Valley Mustang girls and boys basketball teams traveled to Canton for a doubleheader against the C-Hawks on Tuesday, January 25th.  The Mustang girls won 53-45, but the boys fell 39-67.

Tri-Valley 53, Canton 45 – Girls

The Mustangs had a second and third quarter rallies to give them a lead, and they were able to fend off a rally by Canton for the win.  Tri-Valley had a 9-4 lead at the end of the first quarter, but the C-Hawks tied the game 14-14 midway through the second quarter.  The Mustangs then went on a 9-0 run to lead 23-14.  Canton responded with a 6-0 run to make the score 23-20 in favor of the Mustangs at halftime.

The C-Hawks continued the run into the third quarter to give them a 26-23 lead.  The Mustangs finished the quarter on an 11-0 run for a 34-26 advantage heading into the fourth quarter.  Canton cut the lead to two points, 42-40, but Lauren Grinde made a three-pointer to end a 5-0 run to give the Mustangs a 47-40 lead.  Tri-Valley was able to hold off Canton the remainder of the game for the win.

Grinde had 20 points to lead Tri-Valley.  Paige Jewett had nine points.  Ava Pearson finished with eight points, and Madelyn Wenzel had seven points.

Canton 67, Tri-Valley 39 – Boys

Canton built a 17-point lead throughout the first half of the game.  The C-Hawks led 16-8 at the end of the first quarter and then extended the lead to 35-18 at halftime.  The Mustangs made the first three-pointer of the third quarter to make the score 35-21, but Canton went on a 15-0 run from there to put the game out of reach.  Canton led 56-29 at the end of the third quarter.

Cory McDonald had 10 points.  Noah Haynes finished with seven points.  Owen Besmer had five points, and Connor Christensen added four points.  Riley Carlson, Carter Sorenson, and Trey Johnson all had three points each.

Tri-Valley will host Elk Point-Jefferson on Thursday, January 27th.

Mustang Wrestling Splits Duals at Home

The Tri-Valley Mustang wrestling team hosted a Dak-12 quadrangular on Tuesday, January 25th.  The Mustangs had matches against Dell Rapids and Madison.

Tri-Valley defeated the Dell Rapids Quarriers 47-30.  Cody Lofswold (113-pound) and Landyn Reiser (145-pound) had pins. Mason Hendrixson (182-pound) and Luke Nehlich (220-pound) both had major decision wins.  Lawson Loiseau (138-pound) had an 8-5 decision win.  Cole Hendrixson (106-pound), Brody Dybvig (126-pound), Remington Ludens (132-pound), and Xavier Yount (170-pound) had wins by forfeit.

The Madison Bulldogs got a 56-22 win over the Mustangs.  C. Hendrixson (106-pound), Treyson Richter (113-pound), and M. Hendrixson (170-pound) had pins in the match.  Dybvig (126-pound) had a major decision win.

Tri-Valley will be at the Wagner Invite on Saturday, January 29th.

Mustang Wrestling 8th at Dak-12 Tourney

The Tri-Valley Mustang wrestling team traveled to Canton on Saturday, January 22nd for the Dak-12 Conference Tournament.  The Mustangs finished eighth with a total of 53.5 points.  Canton won the team title with 232.0 points.  Tea Area was second followed by West Central.

Mason Hendrixson took home the individual title in the 170-pound weight class with a 3-0 record.  Cole Hendrixson placed fourth in the 106-pound class with a 2-2 record.  Everet Althoff had two wins on the day.  Lawson Loiseau, Landyn Reiser, Zach Powell, and Luke Nehlich all had one win each.

The Mustangs will host a Dak-12 quadrangular on Tuesday, January 25th.

Dakota Valley Takes Both Games of Doubleheader over Tri-Valley

The Tri-Valley Mustangs hosted the Dakota Valley Panthers in a girls and boys doubleheader on Friday, January 21st.  The Panther girls defeated Tri-Valley 61-47.  The Panther boys won 66-32.

Dakota Valley 61, Tri-Valley 47 – Girls

After Tri-Valley made the first field goal of the game, Dakota Valley used a 12-0 run in the first quarter to build a lead they wouldn’t lose.  The Panthers led 18-5 after the first quarter and extended the lead to 34-10 with 2:30 to play in the second quarter.  The Mustangs finished the half on a 7-2 run, but still trailed 36-17 at halftime.  Dakota Valley maintained about a 15-point lead in the third quarter and led 48-31 heading into the fourth quarter.

The Mustangs shot 39% (19-49) from the field, 14% (2-14) from three-point area, and 7-10 from the free-throw line.  The Panthers were 37% (23-62) shooting, 2-17 on three pointers, and 62% (13-21) from the free-throw line.

Lauren Grinde had 17 points and seven rebounds.  Pagie Jewett had 15 points and four rebounds.  Hillary Hastings had five points and six rebounds.  Madelyn Wenzel added four points and eight rebounds.  Ava Pearson had three points, nine rebounds, and five blocked shots.

Dakota Valley 66, Tri-Valley 32 – Boys

Dakota Valley opened the game on a 9-0 run and never looked back.  The Panthers built a 25-10 lead by the end of the first quarter.  They held Tri-Valley to just four second-quarter points and led 45-14 at halftime.  Dakota Valley also outscored the Mustangs in the second half, 21-18.

The Mustangs shot 31% (13-42) in the game, 1-9 from three-point area, and 5-5 from the free-throw line.  Dakota Valley was 45% (27-60) from the field, 30% (7-23) from three-point area, and 50% (5-10) at the free-throw line.

Lance DeWitt had 10 points and four rebounds.  Noah Haynes finished with six points.  Riley Carlson had five points and two rebounds.  Trey Johnson added four points.  Brayden Oyen had three points and five rebounds.

Winner Survives Upset Bid by Mustang Boys

The Tri-Valley Mustangs nearly got an upset win over the third-ranked and undefeated Winner Warriors on Thursday, January 20th.  The Mustangs pulled within a point, 51-50, with 1:15 to go in the game, but the Warriors made a three-pointer with :43 to play in the game.  They added two free throws in the final 30 seconds to survive and win 56-50.

Winner took a 6-0 lead in the first two and a half minutes of the game.  They ended the first quarter with an 11-4 lead over the Mustangs.  The Warriors built a 13-point lead, 21-8, early in the second quarter.  The Mustangs cut the lead to 24-18 by halftime.

The Warriors were able to extend their lead to double digits again in the third quarter.  In the closing seconds, Carter Sorenson got a steal and a layup to make the score 38-30 heading into the fourth quarter.  Winner, again, held a double digit lead, 42-32, after a three-pointer with 7:20 to play in the game.  The Warriors maintained a six-to-eight point lead over next four minutes.  After two made free throws, Winner led 50-43 with 3:10 left in the game.  Tri-Valley went on a 7-1 run and pulled within a point, 51-50, after a layup by Noah Haynes with 1:15 to play.  Winner, however, held the Mustangs scoreless the rest of the game.

Tri-Valley finished the game 43% (19-44) from the field, 41% (7-17) from three-point area, and 5-8 from the free-throw line.  Winner was 35% (17-48) shooting, 41% (10-24) on three pointers, and 67% (12-18) from the free-throw line.

Braden Oyen had 13 points, two rebounds, and a steal.  Connor Christensen had 12 points, eight rebounds, two assists, and two steals.  Haynes finished with 11 points, three rebounds, and two assists.  Owen Besmer had five points and seven rebounds.

The Mustangs (2-7) will host Dakota Valley on Friday, January 21st.

Mustangs Beat Vermillion in Wrestling Dual

The Tri-Valley Mustang wrestling team hosted the Vermillion Tanagers in a Dak-12 wrestling dual on Tuesday, January 18th.  The Mustangs won the dual 48-36.

Cole Hendrixson, Treyson Richter, Landyn Reiser, Zach Powell, Everet Althoff, Mason Hendrixson, and Luke Nehlich all earned pins in the match.

The Mustangs will be in Canton for the Dak-12 Conference Tournament on Saturday, January 22nd.

Tri-Valley Boys Can’t Keep Pace with Tea

The Tri-Valley Mustang boys basketball team ran into a tough Tea Titan team on Monday, January 17th in Tea.  The Titan defense and hot shooting led to a 62-29 win for Tea.

The Titans got out to a fast start and lead 21-11 after the first quarter.  Tea held Tri-Valley scoreless in the second quarter and pushed their lead to 44-11 by halftime.  Both teams scored 18 points each in the second half on the running clock.

The Mustangs shot just 29% (10-35) from the field, 2-13 on three pointers, and 7-8 from the free-throw line.  The Titans finished 53% (26-49) from the field, 2-14 from three-point area, and 8-12 from the free-throw line.  The Titans forced 20 Mustang turnovers, 14 of those on steals.

Connor Christensen led the Mustangs with 12 points and five rebounds.  Lance DeWitt and Riley Carlson both had five points and a rebound.  Isaac McFarland had three points and five rebounds.

Tri-Valley (2-6) will travel to Winner on Thursday, January 20th.

Mustang Wrestling 10th at Hosted Invitational

The Tri-Valley Mustang wrestling team finished 10th at their Tri-Valley Invitational tournament on Saturday, January 15th.  The Mustangs finished with a total of 81.5 points.  Winner placed first as a team with 239.5 points.  Canton was second with 227.0 points, and Kimball/White Lake/Platte-Geddes was third with 199.0 points.

Six Mustang  wrestlers placed in the tournament.  Brody Dybvig (126-pound) finished fourth with a 2-2 record for the day.  Mason Hendrixson was fourth in the  170-pound class also with a 2-2 record.  Cole Hendrixson was fifth in the 106-pound class with a 3-2 record.  Lawson Loiseau (138-pound) also finished fifth with a 4-2 record.  Treyson Richter (113-pound, 2-2) and Isaac Nehlich (220-pound, 2-3) both placed sixth.

The Mustangs will host a Dak-12 quadrangular on Tuesday, January 18th.

Mustangs Split Doubleheader in Two Buzzer-beater Games at Beresford

Moving the games a day earlier due to weather, the Tri-Valley Mustang girls and boys basketball teams split a doubleheader in Beresford on Thursday, January 13th.  Both games came down to the final shot.  The girls lost by one point, 58-57.  The boys ended their skid with a three-point win on a buzzer-beater, 50-47.

Beresford 58, Tri-Valley 57 – Girls

The Mustangs nearly completed a fourth quarter comeback in their game.  Tri-Valley held a two-point lead after the first quarter, 16-14.  The lead grew to five points, 19-14, with 7:40 to go in the first half.  The Watchdogs then went on a big second quarter run.  Beresford held Tri-Valley to six points the rest of the quarter and led 35-25 at halftime.

Beresford maintained their lead throughout the third quarter.  The Watchdogs led 47-39 heading into the fourth quarter.  The Mustangs went on an 11-3 run to tie the game 50-50 with 4:45 to play.  Tri-Valley eventually took the lead 53-52 with 1:50 to play.  The two teams traded baskets the remainder of the game.  Stephanie Buchmann made a shot with :12 to go to put the Mustangs ahead 57-56.  Beresford followed with a made basket seconds later to retake the lead.  After a timeout, Tri-Valley drew up a play that gave Lauren Grinde a good look for a last second shot, but unfortunately, the shot fell of the back of the rim.

Grinde finished with 22 points, four rebounds, two steals, and two assists.  Paige Jewett had 11 points and four rebounds.  Buchmann added 10 points and four rebounds.  Hillary Hastings had six points and five points.

Tri-Valley 50, Beresford 47 – Boys

The Tri-Valley boys completed their comeback for a 50-47 win over the Watchdogs.  Beresford took advantage of a slow start by the Mustangs in the first quarter for a 13-5 win.  Tri-Valley cut the lead down to one point, 21-20, by halftime.

The Mustangs still found themselves trailing after three quarters of play, 29-26.  The Tri-Valley offense really took off in the fourth quarter, nearly doubling their score in the final quarter alone.  With the game tied 47-47 with 2.9 seconds to go, Noah Haynes hit a three-pointer from the top of the key at the buzzer to give the Mustangs the win.

Three players finished in double figures for the Mustangs.  Haynes finished with 16 points.  Lance DeWitt had 12 points, and Connor Christensen had 10 points.

Tea Area Shuts Down Tri-Valley Girls

The Tri-Valley Mustangs ran into a tough Tea Area Titan team on Tuesday, January 11th.  The Titans held the Mustangs to single digit scoring in three of the fourth quarters on their way to a 59-32 win.

Tea led from start to finish in the game.  The Titans held a 15-6 lead at the end of the first quarter.  The lead grew to 25-11 at halftime.  Tea outscored Tri-Valley in the third quarter 13-6 for a 38-17 lead heading into the fourth quarter.  The Mustangs scored almost as many points in the fourth quarter as they did the previous three at 15, but the Titans scored 21 themselves.

Tri-Valley shot 28% (11-39) from the field, 1-13 on three pointers, and 57% (9-15) from the free-throw line.  The Titans shot 36% (21-59) from the field, 18% (3-17) from three-point area, and 64% (14-22) from the free-throw line.

Paige Jewett had 10 points and four rebounds.  Lauren Grinde had seven points, four rebounds, and two assists.  Ava Pearson added six points, nine rebounds, two blocks, and a steal.  Hillary Hastings had six points and three rebounds.

The Mustangs (4-4) will be at Beresford on Friday, January 14th.
