Quarrier Boys Golf Season Begins

NewDRLogoThe Dell Rapids boys golf team began their 2016 season in Hartford at the West Central Early Bird Invitational on Monday, August 15th.  Dell Rapids finished 10th as a team with a team score of 365.  Sioux Falls Christian finished first with a team score of 333.  Canton was second with 338, and Dakota Valley finished third with a team score of 351.

Jordan Kerns finished eighth individually with a round of 82.  Mason Schmidt also had a round of 82 and finished ninth.  Sheldon Siemonsma had a round of 99 for Dell Rapids.  Zach McKee finished with a 102, Karsen Welbig at 106, and Jack Weber had a 118.

The Quarriers will be at Dakota Valley on Wednesday, August 17th.

Mudcats Advance, PBR Season Ends at State B Tournament

MudcatsLogoThe Dell Rapids Mudcats advanced to the next round of the 2016 State B Amateur baseball tournament with a 3-1 win over Dimock-Emery on Sunday, August 7th, in Mitchell.

The Mudcats scored their first run in the second inning, and then neither team scored until the seventh inning.  The Mudcats scored another run in the seventh when Travis Peters singled to score Kris King.  Dimock-Emery was able to push across a run in the eighth, but the Mudcats answered in the bottom half of the inning for the 3-1 win.  Jared Donahue pitched a complete game for the Mudcats giving up just the one run on six hits while striking out twelve.

Dell Rapids PBR, meanwhile, saw their season come to an end on Monday, August 8th, in a 7-1 loss to the Garretson Blue Jays.  Garretson score two runs to in the top half of the first inning, and then added five more in the top of the third.  Cody Collier drove in the lone PBR run and also had two hits.  Brian Miller collected two hits, and Matt Burpee and Preston Davis each had a hit.

The Mudcats will play the Parkston Mudcats on Thursday, August 11th, at 6:00 p.m.

Dell Rapids 15/16 Teeners Bring Home Second

DellsBaseballLogoThe Dell Rapids 15/16 Teeners finished their year with a second place finish at the 2016 State A VFW Teener Tournament in Lennox.  Beresford scored the winning run in the bottom of the seventh for a 5-4 win over Dell Rapids.

Neither team even had a hit through the first two innings of the game.  Beresford struck first for two runs in the bottom of the third inning.  Beresford was able to string together three hits to score the two runs.

Dell Rapids took the lead in the top of the fourth scoring three times.  Austin Ellingson, Carter Gullickson, and Matt Gillogly all scored runs, and Jeffrey Schuch had an RBI.  Beresford tied the game in the bottom of the fourth at 3-3.  The game remained tied at 3-3 heading to the seventh.

Tate Kolbeck led off the seventh with a single.  Three batters later, Gullickson drove home Kolbeck with an RBI triple to take a 4-3 lead.  Beresford started the bottom of the seventh off with a single followed by a hit batter.  After a sacrifice bunt, Beresford was able to score two runs on a hit batter, single, and a walk.

Ellingson pitched the entire game for Dell Rapids.  He gave up five runs on seven hits, three walks, two hit batters, and four strikeouts.

Gullickson finished 2-4 with a triple, single, and an RBI.  Gillogly was 1-4.  Logan Ruesink had a double.  Kolbeck finished with a single.

Dell Rapids 15/16 Teeners to Play for Championship

DellsBaseballLogoThe Dell Rapids 15/16 Teeners punched their ticket to the championship game of the 2016 15/16 State A VFW Teener Tournament with an 8-2 win over Winner on Saturday, August 6th, in Lennox.

After three scoreless innings, Dell Rapids took the lead with three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning.  Keegan Miller, Eddie Price, and Seth Spielmann each hit RBI doubles in the three-run fourth.  Dell Rapids then added three more runs in the fifth inning.  Miller, Price and Logan Ruesink all had RBI singles.

Price pitched all seven innings, not allowing a hit through five innings.  Winner strung together three hits in a row to plate two runs in the top of the sixth inning, but Price shut down Winner the rest of the game.  Dell Rapids also scored two runs in the sixth inning.

Austin Ellingson, Carter Gullickson, Jeffrey Schuch, and Cameron Bruhn also had hits in the game.  Price gave up two runs on three hits while striking out six.

The championship game in Lennox will start at 5:30 p.m. on Sunday.

Dell Rapids 15/16 Teeners Head to Semis

DellsBaseballLogoThe Dell Rapids 15/16 Teeners advanced to the semifinals of the 2016 State A 15/16 VFW Teener Tournament in Lennox with a 4-2 opening round win over Milbank.

Dell Rapids scored four times in the third winning on three straight hits.  The inning started with a lead-off walk.  Then Matt Gillogly, Jeffrey Schuch, and Keegan Miller followed with back-to-back-to-back singles.  Milbank scored two times in the fourth inning to cut the lead in half, but neither team scored the rest of the game.

Carter Gullickson pitched the first four innings for Dell Rapids.  Gullickson gave up two runs on three hits.  He walked two and struck out five.  Austin Ellingson pitched the final three innings giving up no runs while allowing one hit and striking out three.

Dell Rapids will play Winner at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday in Lennox.

Dell Rapids Mudcats and PBR Advance in State Tournament

Both the Dell Rapids Mudcats and Dell Rapids PBR baseball teams advanced to the second round of the 2016 State B Amateur baseball tournament in Mitchell by scoring enough runs in the first winning for their wins.

MudcatsLogoThe Dell Rapids Mudcats played the second game of the tournament on Wednesday, August 3rd, against Menno.  The Mudcats earned a 2-0 win.  The Mudcats scored a run in the bottom of the first inning when Jimmy Bauer scored on a wild pitch.  The second run for Dell Rapids didn’t come until the sixth inning when Nate Henry drove home Travis Peters on a two-out RBI single.  Mudcat starting pitcher Drew Sweeter pitched 8 1/3 innings of shutout baseball scattering four hits while striking out seven to earn the win.  The Mudcats will play Dimock-Emery on Sunday at 6:00 p.m.

Dell Rapids PBR picked up a 4-2 win over Larchwood in their opening round game on Thursday, August 4th.  PBRLogoThe first inning saw the majority of the scoring.  Larchwood started off the game scoring two runs in the top of the first.  PBR, however, answered with three runs in the bottom half of the first inning.  Dell Rapids would pick up an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth when Cody Collier singled to center to score Weston Hansen.  Brett Mogen earned the win for PBR pitching six innings giving up two runs while striking out four.  Garrison Collier pitched the final three innings for the save.  PBR will play Garretson on Monday at 6:00 p.m.

Dell Rapids 15/16 Teeners Win Region 3A

The Dell Rapids 15/16 Teeners won the Region 3A Tournament held in Humboldt on July 25th and 26th to advance to the State A 15/16 VFW Teener Tournament.

Dell Rapids opened up the tournament on Monday, July 25th, by beating Tri-Valley 8-0.  Eddie Price pitched a complete game shutout.  He only allowed one hit, and struck out 10.  Offensively Dell Rapids was led by Keegan Miller who had a triple, a single, two RBI, and scored two runs.  Seth Speilmann and Austin Ellingson added two singles each, and both drove in a run.  Carter Gullickson added a double and two RBI, and Jeffrey Schuch hit a two-run single.

Dells Rapids then defeated West Central 8-3 in the region championship on Tuesday, July 26th, thanks to error-free defense and another complete game pitching performance.  Ellingson threw all seven innings for Dell Rapids striking out eight West Central hitters.  Gullickson led the charge for the offense with a double, two singles, and two RBI.  Cameron Bruhn contributed a triple and a single, and Ellingson added two more singles and a RBI.  Miller and Spielmann also collected hits and each drove in a run.  Spielmann scored three times.

Dell Rapids will face Milbank in the opening game of the state tournament on Friday, August 5th, at 12:00 p.m.  The state tournament will be held in Lennox August 5th through 7th.

Dell Rapids High School and Legion Baseball Awards

DellsBaseballLogoThe Dell Rapids High School and Dell Rapids Legion baseball teams had players recognized with post-season awards.

Josh Roemen, Carter Gullickson, Ryan Geraets, and Brett Mogen were selected to the 2016 Class B All-State Team for Dell Rapids High School Baseball.  These four were also named to the All-Region team.  Eric Klein and Matt Gillogly were also named to the All-Region Team.  Noah Scotting, Mogen, Klein, Casey Hansen, and Geraets were also Academic All-State winners.

Two players from the Dell Rapids Legion team were selected to play in the 2016 American Legion All-Star game.  Trey Randel and Ryan Geraets were selected by the South Dakota Amateur Baseball Coaches Association to play in the games.  There will be two All-Star games played on Monday, August 1st, at Lake Norden starting at 5:30.

Dell Rapids 13/14 Teeners Finish 2nd at State

West Central and Dell Rapids combined to score seven runs in the seventh inning alone, and it was West Central that edged out Dell Rapids for the 13/14 State A VFW Teener Tournament title 7-5 at Rickeman Field on Sunday, July 24th. DellsvsWC_7-24-16

Dell Rapids scored the first run of the game when Connor Libis scored on an errant throw to third in the bottom half of the first inning. West Central got on the board in the top of the third on a two-run single by Caden Ideker and took a 2-1 lead.  West Central then added another run in the top of the sixth on a run scored by Truman Dick.  Dell Rapids answered with a run in the bottom half of the inning on an RBI single by Brandon Geraets to cut the West Central lead to 3-2 heading to the top of the seventh inning.  That’s when the offenses caught fire.

West Central scored four times in the top of the seventh on RBI hits by Ryan Healy, Ideker, Tyler Lundborg, and Dick.  West Central finished their half of the inning leading 7-2.  Karsen Welbig started the inning by drawing a walk and eventually scored.  After a strikeout, Libis and Logan Ellingson also drew walks.  JD Holm drove in a run with an RBI groundout.  Jake Steineke followed with an RBI single to cut the lead to 7-5.  With Steineke on second base and two outs, Geraets roped a line drive to center field that was run down and caught for the final out of the game.

Cooper Maras pitched the entire game for West Central earning the win by giving up five runs, all earned, on four hits while walking six and striking out 10.  Ty Wood started the game for Dell Rapids pitching four innings giving up two earned runs on five hits while walking one and striking out two.  Logan Stone pitched 2 1/3 innings of relief giving up three runs, two earned, on two hits while walking three.  Steineke pitched the final 2/3 of an inning giving up two earned runs on three hits with one strikeout.

Dell Rapids also was awarded the Sportsmanship Team Award for the tournament.

Dell Rapids 13/14 Teeners Head to the Championship Game

DellsvsTea_7-23-16_1Dell Rapids scored 15 runs in the middle innings and defeated Tea 15-2 on Saturday, July 23rd, at Rickeman Field.  The win moves Dell Rapids to the Championship Game against West Central on Sunday, July 24th, at 5:00 p.m.

Both starting pitchers got through the first inning with relative ease as neither team scored.  Dell Rapids then scored four times in the top of the second inning.  Tea answered with two in their half of the second to cut the Dell Rapids lead to 4-2.  Dell Rapids added two more runs in the third inning.  The host team then scored nine times in the fourth inning to put the game out of reach.

Every started had a hit in the game for Dell Rapids.  Brandon Geraets had two hits.  Thane Hilmoe had one hit and three RBI.  Connor Libis, Logan Ellingson, JD Holm, Jake Steineke, Drew VanRegenmorter, Karsen Welbig, and Ty Wood all had hits.  Libis, Ellingson, Steineke, VanRegenmorter, and Welbig all had an RBI as well.  Hunter Frankenstein had two hits for Tea.  Brandon Hone had a double, and Trevor Welch had a hit.

Steineke earned the win for Dell Rapids.  He pitched four innings giving up two runs, one earned, on four hits while walking two and striking out six.  Ellingson pitched the final inning walking one and striking out one.  Cameron Jensen took the loss pitching three innings giving up six runs, four earned, on six hits while walking two and striking out one.  Frankenstein pitched 1/3 of an inning giving up eight runs, all earned, on two hits while walking one and hitting four batters.  Hone pitched 1 1/3 innings of relief giving up one earned run on two hits with one walk.
