Record-Breaking Year for St Mary Track and Field

The St. Mary Track and Field team has had one of its best seasons ever this year, breaking five school records while qualifying eight athletes in ten events for the State Track Meet in Sioux Falls this weekend.

2017SMTrackRecordBreakers8th grader Ella Heinitz has been the breakout star for St. Mary this season. In just the second meet of the season Ella ran a 1:02.7 in the 400m Dash, breaking Mary Schwebach’s 1986 record of 1:03.0. Ella has since lowered that mark to 1:01.1 and has qualified for the State Track Meet in the event.

The next two records fell on the same day at the Chester Meet on April 22nd. First, sophomore Maddie Schwebach threw Discus 109’10”, a throw that qualified her for state while breaking Carol Gengler’s old record of 109’4” that had stood since 1975. Maddie would later go on to win the DVC Championship in the Discus.

Later that day, the girls 3200m Relay team qualified for state and set a new school record by running 10:29.4. That mark was set by junior Cassy Geraets, freshman Tana Harrington, senior Christina Vogel, and Ella Heinitz, beating the 2008 record of 10:40.9 set by Kiley Wolles, JJ Everist, Brooke Wolles, and Robyn Everist.

At the Estelline Meet on April 28, St. Mary qualified two more athletes for the State Meet as Ella Heinitz ran a 27.1 in the 200m Dash and junior Logan Gaspar cleared 5’11” in the High Jump.

In front of their hometown fans at the Dell Rapids Meet on May 8, Christina Vogel and Ella Heinitz put on a show. First, Christina Vogel completed the 1600m Run in 5:41.6. While not a state qualifying mark, that time broke the old record of 5:46.0 set by Anna Wolles in 2013.

The most impressive run of the season came later that day for Ella Heinitz. Ella finished the 800m Run in 2:20.8, which shattered Mary Schwebach’s prior record of 2:30.2 that was set in 1986. Not only did that mark qualify Ella for the State Track Meet, it gave her the fastest time in all of Class B this season and the 7th fastest time in the entire state in the 800m Run. 2017SMTrackStateQualifiers

While no schools records were broken at the Region Track Meet, St. Mary had five Region Champions and four new qualifiers for the State Track Meet based on their region placing. The 3200m Relay record-breaking team claimed a Region Championship in their event, as did Ella Heinitz in the 400m Dash. Kennedi Mullaney in the 100m Hurdles, Christina Vogel in the 1600m Run, and Tana Harrington in the 800m Run all won Region Championships as well and advanced to the State Track Meet. Sophomore Ethan Geraets was Region Runner-Up in the 800m Run, running his best time of the season while qualifying himself for the State Track Meet.

Mudcats Win Cornbelt Opener

MudcatsLogoThe Dell Rapids Mudcats opened up the Cornbelt League season with a 3-2 win over Flandreau on Thursday, May 18th, at Rickeman Field in Dell Rapids.

Flandreau scored the first two runs of the game.  The first run came in the first inning on a throwing error.  Flandreau added to their lead at 2-0 after an RBI single in the top of the fourth inning.  The Mudcats got on the board after a Chad Hunt RBI sacrifice fly.  Aaron Johnson drove home the next two runs on a single to give Dell Rapids the lead.

Colin Karst started the game for the Mudcats, giving up two runs, but just one of them earned.  Nate Alfson pitched four innings in relief allowing just one hit while striking out seven.  Jimmy Bauer had two hits, including a double.

The Mudcats are scheduled to host the Sioux Falls Squirrels, but the Dell Rapids High School baseball team will be hosting the Region 2B “Super Regional” tournament games on Tuesday.  The Mudcats will host Renner on Thursday, May 25th.  The next Cornbelt League game for Dell Rapids is on Thursday, June 1st, in Humboldt.

Cardinal Track Teams Finish 5th and 6th at Region 4B

DRSM LogoThe Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal track teams competed in the Region 4B track meet on Thursday, May 18th, at Chester.  The Cardinal girls team finished 5th with 89 points.  Chester Area won the girls title with 126 points, Hanson was 2nd with 108.33 points, and Howard placed 3rd with 95.33 points.  The Cardinal boys team finished 6th with 58 points.  Chester Area also won the boys title with 130 points.  Colman-Egan was 2nd with 114 points, and Canistota placed 3rd with 73 points.

The Cardinals had five Region 4B champions.  The 4x800m Relay team (Cassy Geraets, Tana Harrington, Christina Vogel, Ella Heinitz) took first place.  Heinitz also won the 400m Dash, Harrington won the 800m Run, Vogel won the 1600m Run, and Kennedi Mullaney won the 100m Hurdles.

The State B Track meet will be held at Howard Wood Field in Sioux Falls on both Friday, May 26th, and Saturday, May 27th.

Boys 2nd, Girls 3rd for Quarrier Track at Region 3A

NewDRLogoThe Dell Rapids Quarrier boys track team placed 2nd with a total 0f 151 points at the Region 3A track meet in Madison on Thursday, May 18th.  Sioux Falls Christian won the title with 213 points.  Madison placed 3rd with 127 points.  The Quarrier girls finished 3rd with 131 points.  Madison won the girls title with 187 points, and Sioux Falls Christian was 2nd with 143 points.

The Quarriers had four region champs on the day.  Aspen Hansen won the 300m Hurdles, Kali Graham won the High Jump, Dawson Kerzman won the Shot Put, and Ethan Brobjorg won the Discus.

The State A Track meet will be held on Friday, May 26th, in Tea, and then Saturday, May 27th, in Sioux Falls.

Quarrier Girls Golf Places Four in Last Two Tournaments

NewDRLogoThe Dell Rapids Quarrier girls golf team played in the Madison Invite on Thursday, May 11th, and then in the Vermillion Invite on Monday, May 15th.  The Quarriers had two top 15 finishers in each of the two tournaments.

Dell Rapids finished fifth as a team with a score of 410 at the Madison Invite.  Canton won the team title with a team score of 367.  Lennox was second with 380, and Madison was third with 389.  Kaitlyn Greenhoff finished second after a two-hole playoff.  Greenhoff finished with a round of 84.  Sam Schmidt tied for 11th with a round of 96.  Olivia Downs finished with a round of 100, and Mallory Haak finished with a 130.

The Quarriers finished with a team score of 418 at the Vermillion Invite.  Vermillion and Lennox both had the low team scores of 357.  Tea Area finished with a team score of 364.  The Quarriers again had two top 15 finishers.  Downs had the low score for Dell Rapids and finished 13th with a round of 92.  Greenhoff also had a round of 92 and finished 15th.  Rose Habeger finished with a round of 112.  Grace Tisher had a 122, and Sydney Emery had a round of 133.

Dell Rapids will be at the Dak XII Conference Tournament in Hartford at Central Valley Golf Course on Monday, May 22nd.

Dells Baseball Advances in Region Play

DellsBaseballLogoDell Rapids took the next step towards a third straight state tournament appearance with an 11-1 opening round win in the regions against Chester/Colman-Egan/Flandreau on Monday, May 15th, in Dell Rapids.

Dells scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning.  Josh Roemen scored on an fielder’s choice RBI by Nate McKee.  Carter Gullickson scored on an error.  Seth Anderson scored on a double, and Dell Rapids led 3-0 early.  Dell Rapids scored two more in the bottom of the third on RBI singles by Austin Ellingson and Keegan Miller.  C/CE/F scored their lone run on the top of the fifth inning, but Dell Rapids answered with six in the bottom of the inning to end the game on the 10-run rule.  Anderson scored on an error, Ellingson scored on a wild pitch, Eddie Price had an RBI single, Logan Ruesink scored on an error, and Gullickson had an RBI double and then scored later in the inning on an error to end the game.

Roemen, Gullickson, Ellingson, and Miller all had two hits each.  Price, McKee, and Anderson also had hits.  Ellingson had two RBIs in the game, while Price, McKee, Gullickson, and Miller all had one RBI.  Roemen pitched all five innings giving up one earned run on two hits while walking one and striking out seven.

Dell Rapids advances to the Super Regional which will be held at Rickemen Field in Dell Rapids on Tuesday, May 23rd.  Dell Rapids will play either Volga or Madison at 3:30 p.m.  Deuel Area will play Oldham-Ramona-Rutland at 5:30 p.m.  The winners of the two games will face one another at 7:30. The winner of the Super Regional will advance to the State B Final Four.

Dell Rapids St Mary Track at DVC Meet

DRSM LogoThe Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal track teams participated in the Dakota Valley Conference Track Meet on Thursday, May 11th, at Elkton High Shcool.  The Cardinal girls finished 5th with 74 points.  Deubrook Area won the girls title with 163 points.  Colman-Egan was 2nd with 102.5 points, and Estelline was 3rd with 91 points.  The Cardinal boys team placed 6th with 59 points.  Colman-Egan won the boys title with 124 points.  Castlewood was 2nd with 110 points, and Elkton-Lake Benton was 3rd with 96 points.

St Mary will be back at Elkton on Thursday, May 18th, for the regional meet.

Quarrier Track Competes at Dak XII Meet

NewDRLogoThe Dell Rapids Quarrier track team competed at the Dak XII Conference meet in Beresford on Thursday, May 11th.  The Quarrier girls team finished with 39 team points.  Madison won the girls title with 110 points.  Canton was second with 88 points, and Beresford placed third with 80 points.  The Quarrier boys team finished third with 79 points.  Sioux Falls Christian won the boys title with 176.5 points.  Madison was second with 99 points.

Dell Rapids will be at the Region 3A meet on Thursday, May 18th.

Cardinal Boys Golf 6th at DVC

DRSM LogoThe Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal boys golf team placed 6th at the Dakota Valley Conference tournament held in Castlewood on Monday, May 8th.  The Cardinals had a team score of 287.  Colman-Egan won the team title with a score of 254.  Arlington was second with a 256, and Deubrook was third with 257.

Garret Frost finished 14th individually with a round of 94.  Carson Park finished with a round of 100.  Lane Reecy finished with a 103, and Austin Welbig had a round of 105.

Quarrier and Cardinal Track Teams at Dells Invite

TrackLogoThe Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals and Dell Rapids Quarrier track teams were at the Dells Invite at Dell Rapids High School on Monday, May 8th.  The Quarrier girls finished second with a team score of 115.  The Cardinal girls finished sixth with a team score of 47.  Canton won the girls team title with 128 points.  The Quarrier boys won the boys title with 144 points.  The Cardinal boys team was eighth with 25 points.

Two St Mary school records were broken.  Christina Vogel broke the school record in the 1600m run with a time of 5:41.6.  This broke the old record of 5:46 held by Anna Wolles.  Ella Heinitz broke another school record as well, this time in the 800m Run.  Heinitz had a time of 2:21.1.  This broke the old record of 2:30.2 held by Mary Schwebach.  Heinitz’s time at the meet is the fastest reported time 800m Run time in Class B, and 7th overall in the state regardless of class!

The Cardinals will be at the Dakota Valley Conference meet on Thursday, May 11th in Elkton.  The Quarriers will be at the Dak-12 Conference meet in Beresford also on Thursday, May 11th.
