Dell Rapids Baseball Throws Pair of No-Hitters

April 23, 2018 by Matt Larson, Big Sioux Media

DRvsSV_Baseball_4-22-18_3After a 170-mile one-way trip to Northville, SD to play two baseball games, Dell Rapids made sure to make the most of the trip by throwing two no-hitters on Sunday, April 22nd.  Dell Rapids earned an 11-0 win over Howard and a 10-0 victory over Sioux Valley.

In the first game of the day, two Dell Rapids pitchers combined to throw a no-hitter in an 11-0 win over Howard.  Matt Gillogly pitched the first three and one-third innings striking out five batters while only allowing two base runners.  Logan Stone pitched the final inning and two-thirds striking out four batters while only allowing one base runner.

The offense scored four times in the second inning by taking advantage of six walks and an error.  Gillogly scored on a wild pitch, Keegan Miller scored on an error, Elijah Story scored on a bases-loaded walk to Tate Kolbeck, and Jeffrey Schuch scored on a sacrifice fly by Carter Gullickson.  Dell Rapids added another run in the third inning when Story scored on a wild pitch.  Dell Rapids added six more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning and then held Howard scoreless in the top of the fifth to end the game on the 10-run rule.

Kolbeck finished 2-3 in the game with an RBI.  Gullickson, Gillogly, Story, and Jay Holm all had hits.  Story and Gullickson both had two RBIs in the game.  Miller and Eddie Price also had an RBI. DRvsSV_Baseball_4-22-18_1

In the second game of the day, starting pitcher Eddie Price dominated Sioux Valley.  Price threw a seven-inning complete game no-hitter.  He struck out 19 batters in the game and nearly pitched a perfect game.  His only base runner allowed was a lead-off walk in the top of the third inning.  The only other two outs recorded besides strikeouts was a groundout back to Price to start the game and a pop fly to second base in the fourth inning.

The offense backed up the strong pitching performance by scoring four runs in the top of the fourth inning, four more runs in the top of the fifth inning, and the final two runs in the top of the seventh inning.  Gullickson, Schuch, Miller, Gillogly, Story, Holm, and Tyson Dahler all had hits in the game.  Miller led the team with three RBIs in the game.  Dahler collected two RBIs.  Schuch, Gillogly, and Story each had an RBI.

DRvsSV_Baseball_4-22-18_2Dell Rapids (4-0) will play Baltic on Tuesday, April 24th at Ronken Field on the campus of Augustana University in Sioux Falls.  The varsity game will start at 7:00 p.m. with a few JV innings to follow.

Dells Baseball Notches Another Victory

April 11, 2018 by Matt Larson, Big Sioux Media

DRvsHoward_HSB_4-11-18On one of the nicest nights of the spring thus far, Dell Rapids and Howard put together a last-minute, make-up game on Wednesday, April 11th.  Already missing games early in the season, the two teams met at Ronken Field on the campus of Augustana University in Sioux Falls.

Dell Rapids scored right away in the top of the first inning.  After a sacrifice by Jay Holm to move Carter Gullickson to second base, Jake Steineke doubled to right filed to drive in the first run of the game.  Matt Gillogly followed with an RBI single to drive home Steineke for an early 2-0 lead.  Dell Rapids scored another run in the second inning when Eddie Price scored on an error to make it 3-0.

The top of the fourth inning is where Dell Rapids did most of the damage.  Holm and Steineke both scored on errors early in the inning.  Gillogly and Keegan Miller scored after Jeffrey Schuch put a ball in play and reached on an error.  Gabe Skonseng also reached on an error with Schuch scoring on the play.  Gullickson hit a fly ball to right field and reached on another Howard error scoring Price and Skonseng.  Gillogly drove in two more runs with a double to right field to give Dell Rapids a 12-0 lead.  Howard was able to score two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning.  Neither team would score in the fifth inning, and the game ended on the 10-run rule.

Gillogly finished the night 2-3 with three RBIs and a run scored.  Holm, Steineke, Elijah Story, and Price all collected hits in the game.  Gullickson, Holm, Steineke, and Price all scored two times in the game as well.

Story pitched a strong four innings giving up two earned runs on two hits while striking out 11 batters and only walking one.  Price closed out the game pitching the final inning by striking out all three batters.

Dell Rapids is 2-0 early in the season.  The schedule has a home game against Oldham-Ramona/Rutland on Friday, April 13th, a JV tournament in Lennox on Saturday, April 14th, and a trip to Redfield on Sunday, April 15th, all weather permitting.

Dell Rapids Baseball Opens 2018 Season with Win

March 30, 2018 by Matt Larson, Big Sioux Media

DRBaseballvsLennox_3-29-18In a battle of top teams in Class B High School baseball, Dell Rapids and Lennox put on a great show early in the 2018 season on Thursday, March 29th in Lennox.  Lennox came into the game with three wins already in the 2018 season, while this was the first game for Dell Rapids.  Dell Rapids, however, is the defending State B champions and had won 14 straight games, going back to 2017, and 18 straight games over Class B opponents.

Starting pitchers Jake Steineke (Dell Rapids) and Brock Anderson (Lennox) were locked in a pitcher’s dual in the first four innings of the game.  Neither team got a hit in those first four innings.

Despite being hitless, both teams threatened to score in the fourth inning.  In the top of the fourth, the first three hitters for Dell Rapids drew walks loading the bases with no outs.  Anderson manged to get out of the jam by striking out Elijah Story and getting Jeffrey Schuch to hit into an inning-ending double play.  Lennox then put together their own threat in the bottom of the fourth inning.  Zach Leisinger reached second on an error to start the inning.  Leisinger, however, was thrown out at second trying to retreat after a bunt attempt.  A walk of the next batter put runners on first and second with only one out.  Steineke struck out Camden Wulf for the second out and then got some defensive help by Schuch who made a diving catch in left field on a line drive from Zach Wipf to end the inning.

Dell Rapids went down in order in the top of the fifth inning, and then Lennox finally got to Steineke in the bottom of the inning.  Anderson starting the inning with a double, the first hit of the game for either team.  Steineke got the next two batters out on strikeouts, but Quincy Ihnen ripped a double to the left-center field gap to drive home Anderson for the first run of the game.  Lennox held a 1-0 lead after five innings of play.

Jay Holm got the first hit for Dell Rapids in the top of the first inning on a shallow fly ball to left field.  Matt Gillogly walked with one out, and then Story walked with two outs to load the bases for Dell Rapids.  Schuch then grounded out to the pitcher, who made a nice play, to end the threat.

Gillogly took over pitching duties in the bottom of the sixth inning and retired the Lennox hitters in order.  Dell Rapids had one more inning to mount the comeback, and come back they would.  Eddie Price led off the inning with a line drive single to left.  After Tate Kolbeck was retired on a strike out, Carter Gullickson hit a line drive single to left field.  Holm followed that with a shallow fly ball single to center to load the bases with one out.  On an 0-1 count, Steineke ripped a line drive to left-center field that drove home Price and Gullickson to give Dell Rapids a 2-1 lead.

Gillogly took the mound in the bottom of the seventh inning.  He made a great catch on a live-drive up the middle for the first out.  He got a strike out of the second batter, and then Gullickson caught a pop-up at second base for the final out of the game to give Dell Rapids the come-from-behind win.

Holm went 2-4 in the game with two singles.  Steineke was 1-3 with a single and two RBIs.  Price and Gullickson collected the other two hits in the game.  Steineke got the no-decision in the game on the mound.  He pitched five innings giving up one earned run on two hits while walking three batters and striking out six.  Gillogly got the win pitching the final two innings.  Gillogly did not allow a base runner and struck out one batter.

The Dell Rapids JV team also earned a five-inning, come-from-behind win over Lennox.  Dell Rapids scored four times in the top of the fifth inning for a 4-2 win to start their season.

Dell Rapids (1-0) is scheduled to host Tea on Tuesday, April 3rd at Rickeman Field starting with the varsity game at 5:30 p.m. and the JV to follow.
