Patricia Marsh

Patricia MarshPatricia Elizabeth Marsh was born on October 31, 1924 in Rapid City, South Dakota, the daughter of Dora and Kenneth Peterson. She was baptized in the Lutheran Church and she grew up and attended school in Franklin prior to moving to Dell Rapids, South Dakota. She graduated from Dell Rapids High School in 1942. She then attended nurses training before moving to Midland, Michigan.

Patricia married Joseph Robert Marsh on June 3, 1944 in Midland, Michigan. They lived in Midland, Michigan from 1944 to 1945. They moved to Dell Rapids, South Dakota in 1945 and raised their family. In 1971 they moved to Mesa, Arizona and lived there until present. They celebrated 64 years of marriage in June 2008.

Patricia passed away on October 12, 2013 in Mesa, Az. She was 88 years old and was preceded in death by her parents, Kenneth and Dora Peterson, her son Robert Charles Marsh, and her loving husband Joseph Robert Marsh who was grateful for having shared her life.

She was a member of the Dell Rapids Lutheran Church and many of the church organizations, Patty retired from J.C. Penney’s after 15 years, and she was very active in her children’s and grandchildren’s lives, and she also enjoyed golfing, bowling and bridge.

Grateful for having shared her life; her daughter, Mary Jo Gannon and husband John Gannon of Mesa, Az.; her two sons; James Marsh of Mesa, Az., Larry Marsh and wife Sherry Marsh of Sioux Falls, SD., her 11 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, two great-great grandchildren and her sister Peggy Drummond of Mesa, Az.

Sally Nebben

Sally NebbenSally Ann Nebben, 57, of Dell Rapids passed away Friday, October 11, 2013 at her home.

Funeral services will begin at 10:30 AM Wednesday, October 16, 2013 at the Lutheran Church of Dell Rapids. Burial will be in the Dell Rapids Cemetery.

Visitation will begin at 2:00 PM with the family present at 5:00 PM and a Prayer Service at 7:00 PM at Minnehaha Funeral Home in Dell Rapids.

Sally Ann Leuning was born December 7, 1955 in Hendricks, MN to parents Howard “Hoot” and Phyllis (Pederson) Leuning. Sally and her brothers, Garry and Dean grew up on the family farm east of Hendricks. She attended Augustana College and received her LPN degree from Southeast Area Votech in 1976. She received her RN degree from the University of South Dakota in 1979.

Sally worked as a registered nurse in ICU at Sioux Valley Hospital. She also worked at the Madison and Dell Rapids hospitals as well as Palisades Manor Nursing Home.

Sally married Jay Nebben June 9, 1990 in Hendricks, MN. They resided on a farm near Dell Rapids. They were blessed with two children, Peter on May 15, 1995 and Jennifer on June 24, 1997. Sally loved caring for her children and had great compassion for others. She also loved animals, especially her dog, Rosie and cats, Thomas and Hannah. Sally was an amazing cook. She was known for her great lefse, lutefisk, krumkaka and Swedish cocoa meatballs.

Sally served on the Dell Rapids Ambulance Service and was a member of Dell Rapids Hospital Auxiliary, Patchwork Community Club and American Legion Auxiliary.

Grateful for having shared her life are her husband, Jay Nebben; Dell Rapids; children Peter and Jennifer Nebben, Dell Rapids; mother, Phyllis Leuning, Hendricks, MN; brother, Garry (Dawn) Leuning and their children, Katie, Spencer and Parker, Hendricks ,MN; sister-in-law, Janelle (Randy) Hindbjorgen and sons, Landon and Austin Leuning, Crooks; father and mother-in-law, Art and Deloris Nebben, Dell Rapids; sisters-in-law Melanie (Lee) Burggraff and Jan Dybvig, Dell Rapids and many other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her father, Howard Leuning in 1998 and brother, Dean Leuning in 2005.

Wanda Thompson

Wanda ThompsonWanda Thompson, 93, died Thursday, October 10, 2013, at the Dougherty Hospice House. Funeral service will begin at 11:00 AM on Monday, October 14, 2013, at Springdale Lutheran Church, rural Sioux Falls, with burial to follow at the Springdale Cemetery. The family will be present to greet friends for visitation from 2:00 to 4:00 PM on Sunday, October 13 at George Boom Funeral Home in Sioux Falls.

Wanda Elizabeth Stover, daughter of Walter and Rose (Bachman) Stover, was born April 24, 1920, in Flandreau, SD. She lived with her family on the family farm east of Flandreau until 1923 when they moved to town where she attended Spafford Grade School through the fifth grade. She then attended the Hess #6 rural school in Moody County and later Flandreau High School. Wanda graduated from Flandreau High School in May of 1938.

Wanda then moved to Sioux Falls where she attended Nettleton Business College for one year and worked part-time at Fantle’s Tea Room as a waitress. Over the next few years she worked several jobs including the Pipestone County ASC office, the office at Tri-State Electric in Sioux Falls and the Civilian Air Force Technical Training Command at the Air Force Base in Sioux Falls in the records division.

On January 1, 1944, Wanda married Earl Thompson at First Lutheran Church in Sioux Falls. She would later work as the book keeper for the Harrisburg Farmers Co-Op Elevator. Earl passed away on March 15, 2004 after 60 years of marriage.

Over the years Wanda was a very active member of the Springdale Lutheran Church, Springdale rural school board, Grieg Chorus Auxiliary, 4H Leader, Boy Scouts of America, the Farm Bureau, Lincoln County Pork Producers and was a charter member of the Echo Extension Club. Above all her various involvements, Wanda cherished the time she spent with her family. She was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and friend who will be greatly missed by all those who shared her life.

Grateful for having shared her life are her daughters, Cheryl (Jerry) Diede, Springfield, MN, Diane (James) Lee, Tulsa, OK; sons, Mark (Jean) Thompson, Forsyth, IL, Gordon (Deb) Thompson, Sioux Falls, and Gregg (Robin) Thompson, Sioux Falls; 14 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; sister, Charlotte Jacobson, Dell Rapids, SD; sister-in-law, Marilyn Skalland, Sioux Falls; brother-in-law, Norman Skalland, Sioux Falls; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Wanda was preceded in death by her husband, Earl Thompson; and her parents, Walter and Rose (Bachman) Stover.

Rosalie Smith

Rosalie SmithRosalie Marie Thompson Smith was born on June 30, 1926, in Goodland, KS, to Fred and Lydia Thompson, wheat farmers in northwestern Kansas. Rosalie was Lydia’s only child and grew up on the farm, enjoying country life to its fullest. It was during this childhood time that Lydia introduced her daughter to sewing, quilting and crocheting – all of which Rosalie enjoyed for the rest of her life.

Rosalie got her early education in a small country school and even though these were the Depression years Rosalie liked her time spent in country school and many times recalled her time there with fondness. In the fall of 1939, Rosalie enrolled in high school in Brewster, KS. She enjoyed high school, especially the business classes. This was also the time when she met her future husband, Junior C. Smith, better known as ‘Smitty’. They dated for a few years before Smitty enlisted in the Marine Corp in 1942. It would be three years before they could see each other again. Smitty was an Infantryman in the South Pacific. Rosalie became a bookkeeper for the local grain elevator after graduating from high school in 1943.

After the war ended Smitty and Rosalie married in September of 1945. Smitty became a full time wheat farmer. Rosalie’s first child, Fred, was born in January 1947 and a second child, Linda Sue was born in January of 1952. In 1955, after a trip to the Black Hills the family fell in love with the area. Smitty then purchased a unit on the Angostura Irrigation Project and the family moved to South Dakota in June of 1956. The children were raised on the farm and both went to elementary school in Oral, SD and to high school in Hot Springs, SD.

Rosalie began work in town in 1959. She worked in the county treasurer’s office, the old Sister’s Hospital and Freed’s Fine Furnishings. In 1966 she started to work at The Veterans Administration Center and held various secretarial positions there until her retirement in 1980. From 1980 on she was again on the farm as a homemaker and the business’s record keeper. Fred, her son, had returned from the service and was now in partnership with his father on the ranch. By now there were three grandchildren on the ranch for Rosalie to enjoy. She really liked watching them in all of their school activities. Another thing which she really liked was car club-a group of people with old cars who went on various expeditions and outings.

Rosalie moved to Hot Springs in May of 1988 after Smitty had suffered a stroke in 1987. After Smitty’s move to the Castle Manor nursing home, Rosalie visited him daily, often feeding him lunch. Her devotion and commitment never wavered until his death in 1994. Rosalie moved to Wynia Apartments and remained there until June of 2013. She then moved to Pine Hills Assisted Living. She really liked Pine Hills and stayed there until a cancer diagnosis brought her to Golden Living Nursing home. She passed away on October 7, 2013. She will be missed by her family whom she loved very much as they did her. Her faith was very strong and she was at peace when she left us.

Survivors include her son, Fred Smith of Hot Springs, daughter, Linda Sue (Bob) Stannard of Denver, CO; three grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Monday, October 14, 2013, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Hot Springs with Pastor Dwayne Hunzeker officiating.

A memorial has been established in Rosalie’s name to benefit St. John’s Lutheran Church.

Gene Hoglund

Gene HoglundGene L. Hoglund, son of Harry S. and Irene (Christensen) Hoglund, was born December 31, 1929 on the family farm in Hamlin County near Lake Norden, South Dakota. He grew up there and attended school in Lake Norden, graduating from Lake Norden High School in 1947. Gene began farming with his father before serving in the U.S. Marine Corps from December 12, 1951 to December 1, 1953. Following his discharge he returned to the farm near Lake Norden. He was united in marriage to Helen Johnson on September 18, 1954 at the Evangelical Covenant Church in Lake Norden. Gene enjoyed his children and grandchilden and all of their activities. They continued to farm on the family farm until moving into Lake Norden in 2003. He died on Tuesday, October 8, 2013 at the Lake Norden Golden Living Center at the age of 83 years.

Gene was a lifelong member of the Evangelical Covenant Church and also served on the elevator board for several years. During high school Gene participated in sports and played baseball with the Lake Norden Lakers for several years. He enjoyed golf and hunting waterfowl, pheasants and deer.

Grateful for having shared his life are his wife Helen of Lake Norden; four children, Shelley Eggebraaten, Gail Ensberg and her husband Brian, all of Sioux Falls, Rhonda Horsley and her husband Gary of Tea, SD, Mick Hoglund and his wife Shauna of Dell Rapids, SD; 12 grandchildren, Nick (Christina) Castillo, Mark Ditmarson, Lydia Osterbuhr, Marci (Jesse) Pearson, Anthony Castillo, Laura (Adam) Chandler, Sara Ensberg, Austin (Adrienne) Horsley, Abby and Nicole Horsley, and Morgan and Ty Hoglund; six great grandchildren; three sisters, JoAnn Mattheis and her husband Ken, Janet Johnson and her husband Al, all of Sioux Falls, Shirley Larson and her husband John of Lake Norden; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Gene was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters, Ruby Skoglund, Harriet Hoglund in infancy, Carol Warren, and a son-in-law David Eggebraaten.

His funeral service will be 2:00 PM Saturday, October 12, 2013 at the Evangelical Covenant Church in Lake Norden. Visitation will be from 4PM to 7PM Friday at Geise Funeral Chapel in Lake Norden.

Vincent Geraets

Vincent GeraetsVincent T. Geraets, 86, of Estelline, died on Friday, October 4, 2013 at the Brookings Hospital in Brookings, SD. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30am, Friday, October 11, 2013 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Dell Rapids, SD. Visitation will be held on Thursday, October 10, 2013 from 5:00pm to 7:00pm with a Liturgical Wake Service beginning at 6:00pm at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Dell Rapids, SD. Burial will be held on October, 15, 2013 at Black Hills National Cemetery in Sturgis, SD.

Vincent T. Geraets was born on March 18, 1927 in Dell Rapids, SD, the son of John and Rose (Rickerl) Geraets. Vincent grew up on the family farm near Dell Rapids, SD. He attended country school and St. Mary’s School in Dell Rapids. After completing his education, he entered the United States Marines and served from 1945 until his discharge in 1946. Following his military involvement, he worked for several area farmers. He was later employed by a dry cleaning business in Dell Rapids.

Vince was united in marriage to MaryLu Schwartz on June 25, 1953 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Dell Rapids. They moved to Mobridge, SD where he continued in the dry cleaning business for 15 years. He purchased a liquor store and operated it for the next four years. He then started his own carpet and upholstery cleaning business, which he operated until retirement. They made their home in Mobridge for 50 years. In May of 2005, they moved to Brookings, SD and resided at Brookhaven Estates independent living center until moving to the Estelline Nursing Care Center in 2012.

He was proud to be a veteran and serve for the United States of America Marine Corps. He was a lifetime member of the American Legion, where he was honored as District Legionnaire of the Year in 1980. He was also a member of the Mobridge Moose Club. As a devoted and dedicated husband, he was quite a domestic engineer around the house, especially after his retirement. He enjoyed gardening and yard work at home and for the church in Mobridge. The Catholic faith was very important to Vince. He was a member and served on the church council at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Mobridge.

Vince is survived by his sisters, Rose Ann (Joe) Slinger, Agnes (Dale) Schmiesing, brother -in-law, Ralph Schwartz and his wife Donna Jean, sisters-in-law; Joyce Geraets, Jeannine Geraets, Darlene Schwartz, and many nieces, nephews and friends.

He was preceded in death by his wife, MaryLu, parents, brothers John, Peter, Clarence, George, James, Charles and Leonard, and sisters Marie, Catherine and Johanna.

Vincent passed away on Friday, October 4, 2013 at the Brookings Hospital in Brookings, SD at the age of 86.

Stephanie Jo Thompson

Stephanie Jo ThompsonStephanie Jo Thompson, 32, of Dell Rapids, SD, passed away on September 29, 2013 after a fatal car accident. She was born in Sioux Falls, South Dakota to Dale Hoefert and Kimberly (Barkley) Hoefert on August 21, 1981. She attended and graduated from Roosevelt High School in 1999.

Stephanie has four children: Haden (13), Aubri (11), Mason (9), and Logan (7). She loved motherhood and did everything she could to make their time together memorable. They enjoyed watching many kinds of movies and playing games, and she never forgot the ice cream. She and her fiancé, Derek Weston, were looking forward to and planning their future together.

Stephanie is survived by her four children: Haden, Aubri, Mason, and Logan; her father, Dale (Sharon) Hoefert; one brother, Nick (Brianna) Hoefert; two nieces, Makayla and Jaelyn; her paternal grandparents, Leroy (Donna) Hoefert; and several aunts, uncles, and cousins.

She is preceded in death by her fiancé, Derek Weston; her mother, Kimberly (Barkley) Hoefert, and maternal grandmother, Mary (Streetman) Marshall.

Her beautiful smile and zeal for life will be celebrated on Friday, October 4, 2013 at 10:30 am at Miller Funeral Home at 507 South Main Avenue in Sioux Falls, SD. Burial will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery in Sioux Falls. Visitation is scheduled for Thursday, October 3, 2013, beginning at 3:00 pm, with the family present from 5:00-7:00 pm, also at Miller Funeral Home.

Patricia (Maguire) Kenner

Pat Maguire KennerPatricia Eileen (Maguire) Kenner was born July 9, 1929, in Triumph, MN. She passed away Sept. 28, 2013, at Fountain Springs Health Care.

Patricia was the daughter of Jerry and Ethel Maguire, the second of seven children. In her early years the family moved from Triumph to Brandt, SD, then to Brookings, Dell Rapids, and Rapid City. Following graduation at Rapid City High School, she attended the University of South Dakota and graduated from St. John’s McNamara School of Nursing (now Rapid City Regional Hospital) as a registered nurse. She was then hired as the night supervisor on the OB floor in Rapid City.

She and Robert “Bob” Kenner married in 1952, enjoying 61 years together. They resided in Kansas for two years while Robert worked for Gulf Oil. It was in Kansas that their first son, Mark, was born. Soon after Mark’s birth they returned to Rapid City for Robert to manage the family business, Howard’s Body Shop. The couple’s next six children were born in Rapid City. Pat and Bob celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in 2012, with family and friends.

Pat utilized her RN degree while raising her seven young children. During the 1970’s she worked the night shift at the Rapid City Rehabilitation Hospital to enable her to tend to her family’s needs during the day. She was a very creative and accomplished cook; creative in that she and Bob were able to feed their growing family well on the wild game which Bob hunted or fished. Each of her culinary creations was a work of love.

Patricia devoted her life to public service. She became active on the West Junior High PTA, the League of Women Voters and various organizations. She served two consecutive terms in the SD State Legislature. One of her most memorable experiences was traveling to China in 1975 for five weeks with a group of 24 legislators from 10 states. She served on the RC School Board for nine years, and on numerous committees dealing with vocational and special education, community health, and the arts. She valued her service on the Community Health Center (CHC) of the Black Hills. She was instrumental in starting the Rapid City Community Health Board which evolved into the CHC of Black Hills. She was president of the West River Foundation, serving the needs of those with mental and physical challenges in West River. She has been honored with the South Dakota American Association of University Women’s Equity Award, the South Dakota Vocational Education Association’s Award of Merit, and Western Dakota Vocational Technical Institute’s Distinguished Service Award. She fervently believed that the education of children is the most important charge that a community has for its future.

Patricia is survived by her husband, Robert Kenner; brothers, Dick Maguire, Rapid City, Tom Maguire, Bailey, CO, and Paul Maguire, Rapid City; six children, Scott (Mary) Kenner, Rapid City, Kristen (Ken) Kenner, Reno, NV, Robyn (Kelly) Brown, Spokane, WA, Terese Kenner, Sioux Falls, Todd (Sally) Kenner, Rapid City, and Paul (Kim) Kenner, Las Vegas, NV; 13 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by her parents, Gerald and Ethel Maguire; three siblings, Mary Gregory, Jim Maguire, and Frances Quasney; her eldest son, Mark; and two great-grandchildren, James and Coen.  Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 2, at Osheim & Schmidt Funeral Home.  Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 3, at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 1012 Soo San Drive.  A memorial in Pat’s name has been set up at Children’s Care, 7110 Jordan Drive, www.cchs.org .

Patricia cherished her Irish heritage handed down from her dad, Jerry Maguire. She will be missed but lives on through her family and those who she has influenced through devotion to education.

Arvin Gilbertson

Arvin GilbertsonServices for Arvin Gilbertson, 88, of Lake Wilson will be at 10:30 a.m. today at St. Mary’s Church in Lake Wilson. Visitation will be one hour prior to the services at the church. Burial is at Hillside Cemetery in Lake Wilson. Military honors accorded by the Chandler American Legion Post and the Lake Wilson American Legion Post.

He died Wednesday, Sept. 25, 2013, at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, S.D.

He was born Jan. 20, 1925, on the family farm near Chandler to Gilbert and Myrtle Schmidt Gilbertson. On Dec. 14, 1944, he was drafted into the United States Navy and served on the USS Salerno Bay. He was honorably discharged June 17, 1946.

Survivors include his wife Mary Ellen of Lake Wilson; children Ed of Slayton, Jeffrey of Windom, Darla Selken of Brandon, S.D., and Brian of Lake Wilson; 10 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and siblings, Darwin of Shakopee, his twin brother, Arlo of Dell Rapids, S.D., and Betty VanLant of Bellflower, Calif.

James “Jim” DeBates

JIm DeBatesJames Donald “Jim” DeBates, 59, Loveland, Colo., died suddenly on Monday, Sept. 16, 2013.  Memorial services were held Saturday, Sept. 21 at First Christian Church in Loveland. Inurnment was in Loveland Burial Park. Memorial contributions may be made to S.P.O.H.N.C. through their website.

James Donald “Jim” DeBates was born Oct.19, 1953 in Pipestone to Francis and Shirley (Dickey) DeBates. He graduated from Luverne High School in Luverne in 1971 and moved to Colorado in 1979. Jim married Sandra K. “Sandy” Unrein on Oct. 9, 1982 in Westminster, Colo. He had resided in Loveland since 2000 and had worked for FleetwoodGoldWyard, Inc. for 34 years. Jim was a seven year cancer survivor and was a point of contact for S.P.O.H.N.C. helping others who were affected by cancer.

He is survived by his wife, Sandy, Loveland; mother, Shirley, Hardwick; daughters, Carly (Dustin) Waldorf, Loveland and Cammie (Jerad) Schwindt, Loveland; brother, Dave DeBates, Broomfield, Colo.; sisters, Debi (Rick) Ripper, Dell Rapids, S.D., Becky (Dave) Nankivel, Tea, S.D., Joni (Conrad) Keller, Broomfield, Kim DeBates, Westminster, and Jeanie (Tom) Lehmann, Broomfield; five grandchildren; his in-laws.

He was preceded in death by his father, Francis.
