Sioux Empire United Way Connecting Kids to Local Activities

Spring is just around the corner, which means many children and their families are gearing up for youth activities all around the Sioux Empire. Children have many options to get involved in extracurricular activities – from sports to theater to camps and more.

Connecting Kids partners with 24 different organizations to promote youth activities and provide financial resources to families who may need assistance. The program will provide hundreds of area students the opportunity to participate in a youth activity this year for free or at a reduced rate.

Local studies show that cost is a factor in children not being able to join the numerous activities available to them across the Sioux Empire. Connecting Kids is designed to ensure every child in grades K-8 has an opportunity for getting involved. Studies also indicate a direct correlation between getting kids involved in activities and their self-esteem, peer relationships and successes later in life. In addition to those benefits, children will learn new activities and skills.

Parents are encouraged to inquire about Connecting Kids certificates when signing their child up for an activity. Another way to obtain a Connecting Kids certificate is by calling Sioux Empire United Way at (605) 336-2095. This program is intended for those families in need of financial assistance, and children can use one certificate per calendar year.

School Board Declares Old Elementary Building as Surplus

March 2, 2014 by Matt Larson, Big Sioux Media

During their regular meeting held on Monday, February 24th, the Dell Rapids School Board declared the old elementary building as surplus.  During the discussion, school board member Matthew Weiland said, “I think personally, one thing nice about declaring it surplus is just the fact that it gets the word out that we’re actually looking to surplus it.  And then if we have anybody in the community that has really strong feelings one way or the other, we’re going to hear from them.”

After the discussion Weiland made the motion to declare the old elementary school as surplus, authorize continued use of the building for Haven, gym use, the MACH lease, and the City Library lease, and proceed with the appraisal of the building.  School board member Steve Stofferahn seconded the motion.  The motion passed unanimously.

The next step for the school board is to now get the building appraised.  Once they have the appraised value, they can determine how the building may be sold.  The most common way for this type of situation is a sealed-bid process.

The minutes for this agenda topic can be found by clicking here.

Dr. Corale Dorn of Dells Veterinary Services is one of only two female veterinarians in the United States chosen by Zoetis Animal Health to attend this conference.

This year’s program, Jumping the Curve, promises to be inspiring.  Speakers at the conference include Renee White, Clara Shih, Dr. Helen Fisher, Rita Moreno, and keynote speaker Hillary Rodham Clinton.  The conference will also offer skill-building workshops, panel discussions, and the opportunity to hear the personal leadership journeys of these accomplished women.  More than 3,000 professional women will attend this year’s conference.

City Council Denies Conditional Use to Argonne Trust Company Again

February 25, 2014 by Matt Larson, Big Sioux Media

Monroe Deifendorf, Jr., chief executive officer for Argonne Trust Company, traveled to Dell Rapids to ask the Dell Rapids City Council to reconsider the failed motion of Zoning Ordinance 789, which would have allowed Argonne Trust Company to apply for a conditional-use permit to operate out of the building located at 503 E 6th Street.  Deifendorf sent a letter to the council asking for reconsideration.  In the letter Deifendorf stated that he believes his company should and would align with the citizens of Dell Rapids.

Zoning Ordinance 789 would have given the council the ability to grant a conditional-use permit to a business to use a church building as an office.  However, the council did not pass that ordinance by a vote of five to three.

The building Argonne Trust Company purchased in 2013 was built in 1905 and was home to Dell Rapids’ Episcopal Church until 1985.  The structure has been a residential home until the Argonne Trust Company purchased the building.

After discussion during the council meeting on Tuesday, February 18th, the council voted against the re-consideration of Zoning Ordinance 789.  The motion passed on a six-to-two vote.  Council members Chad Andrews and Mike Geraets voted in favor.

The discussion can be seen on the archive of the council meeting.  The discussion starts around the 56:25 mark of the video and ends at the 1:48:00 mark.
