New Truck Route Now in Place

October 10, 2018 by Matt Larson, Big Sioux Media

Dell Rapids has an updated truck route ordinance which includes a secondary truck route.  Dell Rapids City Ordinance 856 had a second reading and adoption passed during the regular council meeting on Tuesday, September 4th, but the ordinance did not go into effect until October 1st.

The new primary truck route is as follows:

  1. State Highway 115 from the west boundary of the city turning southeast to the south boundary of the city.
  2. Quartzite Street from State Highway 115 on the west to Garfield Avenue on the east.
  3. Garfield Avenue between Quartzite Street and Seventh Street.
  4. Seventh Street from Garfield Avenue on the west to the east boundary of the city.
  5. County Highway 129 from the north boundary of the city angling southeast to where the highway intersects State Highway 115 (Fourth Street) and continuing south on State Highway 115 to the south boundary of the city.
  6. Zero Street from State Highway 115 on the east to Quarry Road on the west.
  7. The entire portions of Quarry Road and Quartzite Street.

The new secondary truck route is as follows:

  1. Third Street from State Highway 115 on the west to Orleans Avenue on the east.
  2. Orleans Avenue between Third Street and Fourth Street.
  3. Fourth Street between Orleans Avenue and Garfield Avenue.

TRUCK ROUTE (2)

Signs for the new truck routes that will be placed by the city and the South Dakota Department of Transportation should be completely installed within the next couple of weeks according to comments made by City Administrator Justin Weiland during the last city council meeting.

A question was also raised as to when the new railroad gates would be installed on South Dakota Highway 115 on the south end of town.  It was reported that those gates would be installed after the sidewalks were completely finished to avoid potentially having to come back and move them during sidewalk placements.

Event to Impact Local Blood Supply This Fall

September 27, 2018 by Submitted

CommunityBloodBankDells Rapids, SD – Avera Dells Area Health Center and Community Blood Bank is joining forces to help ward off fall blood shortages by hosting the blood drive event. The blood drive will be held on Thursday, October 4th from 7:00 am to 11:00 am and 12:30 pm and 2:30 pm at Avera Dells Area Health Center. All blood donations will stay local for local use and all who donate will receive a special t-shirt.

Every three seconds someone needs blood, and the only way to ensure that those needs are met is to rely on volunteer donors to donate blood. The need for local blood donors is immense. The Community Blood Bank supplies over 550 units of blood each week to people in the region. Among those who benefit from donated blood are trauma and burn victims, cancer patients and persons undergoing surgery.

“The fall can be a difficult to maintain an adequate blood supply for the community,” states Ken Versteeg, Executive Director, Community Blood Bank. “With people addressing elective surgeries before the end of the year and a consistent need for blood for many types of medical treatment, data shows a steady increase in usage as we go through the fall season.”

Donors must be at least 17 years old (16 years old with a signed parent consent form), weigh 110 lbs or more and be in good general health. It is recommended that a person eat and drink plenty of fluids prior to donating blood. Please bring an ID with you at the time of donation. For more information log onto www.cbblifeblood.org or call Community Blood Bank at 1-877-877-3070 or call Avera Dells Area Health Center at 605-428-5431

Community Blood Bank is not affiliated with other blood bank organizations and takes pride in being a self-sufficient organization, thanks to the generosity of our local blood donors.

New Chef Cooks Lunch for Students in Dell Rapids

September 25, 2018 by Submitted

LunchtimeSolutionsChefDemoDELL RAPIDS, SD — Sabrina Slater, the new demonstration chef at Lunchtime Solutions, Inc., was in the lunchroom to cook and serve beef and broccoli stir fry on Tuesday, September 25th.  Chef Sabrina created this savory dish right in front of the students and served it up hot and fresh.

Preparing fresh entrees for students through chef demonstrations in the lunchroom is a regular part of Lunchtime Solutions’ food service program.  Lunchtime Solutions has operated Dell Rapids food service for the past 16 years.

Chef Sabrina has nearly 15 years of experience in food service, spending three years as a cook at the famous Bellagio Casino in Las Vegas before joining the Lunchtime Solutions team. She is excited to bring her expertise into our schools to provide more healthy, fresh-made lunch choices for students and staff.  Our chef-prepared entrees give them an opportunity to try foods that they may have not tried before and expose them to flavors and tastes not normally a part of school food service.

“Our program centers on getting kids excited about eating lunch at school,” said Jennifer Hopf, Area Director for Lunchtime Solutions. “We think it’s important to provide a wide variety of menu options and make sure students have unlimited access to fresh fruits and vegetables every day.”

Progress Made on Comfort Station

September 20, 2018 by Matt Larson, Big Sioux Media

CampgroundComfortStation2018Construction is finally under way on the new comfort station at Rickeman Field.

“We have that comfort station finally under way, three years and three attempts later.  We’ve got the walls up.  They look good,” mentioned City Administrator Justin Weiland during the Dell Rapids City Council meeting on Monday, September 17th.

The original plan had an October 15th deadline for the completion of the facility, but the contractor has expressed concern about meeting that deadline.  City administration has acknowledged that concern and has expressed a willingness to work with them on the deadline.

The campground updates are still planned to be completed this year.  The city has been in contact with Prunty Construction for the installation of water and sewer lines.  The city has been told that will start to happen within the next couple of weeks.  After the water and sewer lines are installed, the electrical work will take place.

During the construction time, alternative parking on Zero Street and over at Volunteer Park will have to be utilized during games held at Rickeman Field.

Race to End Human Trafficking to Be Held in Dell Rapids

September 18, 2018 by Matt Larson, Big Sioux Media

TheRacetoEndHumanTraffickingOn Saturday, October 13th, Dell Rapids streets will have runners of all ages making strides for “The Race to End Human Trafficking.”  According to international definition, human trafficking means ‘the recruitment, transportation, transfer, harboring or purchase of persons for the sole purpose of exploitation.’  According to the International Labor Organization (ILO), approximately 2.5 million people become victims of human trafficking every year.

“I think human trafficking is something has gotten a lot of press the last few years surrounding the Super Bowl, especially while in Minneapolis this last year,” Pastor Brandon Wenzel of Quest Church explained. “We here in South Dakota are actually a pretty big hub for moving people across the country with some major highways running through our state. Our goal is to not only bring awareness, but to give money to organizations that are making a difference not only around the world in this area, but right here in South Dakota. It is our goal to raise over $5,000 through this endeavor.”

With so many organizations set up across the world to assist with this epidemic, “The Race to End Human Trafficking” is working on helping the more local organizations.  “For our first race, we are looking to give money to “Freedom’s Journey” out of Rapid City and also to “Call of Freedom” in Sioux Falls,” Wenzel explained.  “Both organizations are doing great things in the area of human trafficking.”

“This particular race will be special because we are catering to both the experienced and inexperienced racer. We wanted to bring in a company for it to be chip-timed so that people could recognize that we are serious about the race portion,” Wenzel stated.  “So if you are an experienced runner, it’s an opportunity to really get an accurate time for your race. It also allows for immediate placements, and you can also see your name on a big LED board when you finish. But if you’re not an experienced racer, it’s a great way to support a cause and get some race experience. There will be plenty of people out there who are just out to have some fun. So whether you want to run your best race or just get out and enjoy the day, this is the race for you!”

“The Race to End Human Trafficking” would love to have the community’s support for this extraordinary cause.  “Join us! Whether that’s signing up your family for the 1 mile fun run, running your first 5k, or running a 10k, we’d love for you to come out.  Every participant gets a free, athletic style shirt and there will be plenty of post-race food as well.  If you’re interested in donating as an individual or a business, we are always looking to raise money that way.”

To find out more information or to register for the race, find “The Race to End Human Trafficking” on Facebook, or go to their website, http://theracetoendhumantrafficking.itsyourrace.com.

Dell Rapids Healthy Hometown Initiative

September 10, 2018 by Matt Larson, Big Sioux Media

The city of Dell Rapids along with other community members have been meeting with Wellmark and discussing actions that can bring about a healthier community. The “Healthy Hometown” initiative looks to identify and make happen actions that can improve the overall health of the community.  An event was held August 16th at County Fair in Dell Rapids.  County Fair and Avera had teamed to offer taste testing and healthy recipes to the County Fair customers.  Customers were able to learn about using avocados in their diet.

Another discussion has been to have a community garden.  “The community garden is part of a larger Healthy Communities Project,” Dan Ahlers explained.  “Many community members are working on this.  It involves people from the city, the chamber, the business community and anyone who has wanted to volunteer for the group.  All different facets of the community that want to be involved to help make Dell Rapids a healthier place.”  Currently, the Healthy Community Project is looking for public spaces.

“We are looking at the area down by the old warming house down by the river,” Ahlers stated.  “The warming house could be used as a community tool shed where people can come in and do their planting and dirt work.  We are looking for volunteers to help with organizing the garden, help us decide what it will look like, how we do the plots, and things like that.”

There has been several requests for a community garden.  “This is certainly something that lends itself to the Healthier Communities,” Ahlers said.  “It provides opportunity for the community to get involved.  There is certainly a benefit to it.   It allows the community to have an opportunity to grow their own vegetables, play with new gardening techniques, and there is an educational component to it as well.  There is a lot of potential.”  Dell Rapids is in the early stages of the community garden, but looks forward to seasons to come.

The expansion of the bike trail is another step towards a healthier community.  With the help of the community, donations, and grants, Dell Rapids is moving forward with several additions.  “The trail existed before this Healthy Communities group,” Ahlers said.  “You can see how it is part of the discussion with questions like, ‘Do we have water dispensers along the way?  Do we have benches we can put along the way?  What will enhance that trail and make it even better?’”

The Healthy Community Group focuses on everything that would help make Dell Rapids a healthier community.  “It’s all about making your small town a better place to live, creating opportunities, and it’s about what makes each little town special,” Ahlers stated.  “We are reaching out for volunteers to assist us with this program.”

If you are interested in volunteering, please contact Justin Weiland at City Hall, Mayor Tom Earley or Dan Ahlers.

What is a community garden?

  • A community garden is typically a public space where community members plant and harvest vegetables/and or fruits for their own use.  Frequently, community gardens are owned/managed by a city, and plots are rented to residents to plant and harvest with an annual fee.  Sometimes, organizations such as faith-based organizations, senior centers, or schools may plant a community garden for use by their organization.  Some community gardens are planted and maintained completely by volunteers and the harvest is shared with community members and/or donated to a local food pantry.

What are some of the health benefits of a community garden?

  • It is expected community gardens can provide increased access to fresh fruits and vegetables, increased consumption of fresh fruits and vegetables, and increased physical activity.  Furthermore, a community garden gives people an opportunity to socialize with neighbors and other community members.  If fruits and vegetables are given to a food pantry or shared with other community members, people who may otherwise not have access to fresh fruits and vegetables could have the opportunity to eat these foods.

What does it take to start a community garden?

  • If enough people in a community/neighborhood/organization are interested in starting a community garden, the first step is to form a community workgroup where decisions can be made about where a garden might best be located, how would the land be obtained, what type of garden beds would be utilized, what are the estimate expenses, how would funds be raised, what kind of policies are needed, as well as provide oversight of the ongoing day-to-day operations of the garden.  It would be important for there to be a broad range of stakeholders with a vested interest in gardening on the committee, including people with gardening expertise and experience as well as people who want to learn and/or actively participate in the process.  Anyone is welcome to participate.

In the past there has been interest in starting a community garden.  We have the opportunity to explore this option as part of the Dell Rapids Healthy Hometown initiative.  We need community volunteers to help us develop and implement an action plan.  If you are interested in helping, please contact Justin Weiland, City Administrator at CityAdmin@cityofdellrapids.com or 605-428-5926 for more information.

Highway 115 South of Dell Rapids Now Open

September 6, 2018 by Matt Larson, Big Sioux Media

Hwy115_Sept2018A portion of the final phase of the Highway 115 project has completed.  The north bridge from 3rd St southward out of Dell Rapids was opened by the South Dakota Department of Transportation in the late afternoon hours of Wednesday, September 5th.  The north bridge has been closed to traffic since December 4th, 2017 to start the final phase of this major highway construction project.

“It will eliminate the detour, which is be a big relief to the community.  It’s been a slog,” said City Administrator Justin Weiland during the Dell Rapids City Council meeting on Tuesday, September 4th.

Construction still continues on Highway 115 from the four-way stop by T&Cs and Dells Auto westward out toward the interstate as projects all across the state are falling behind schedule.

“T&R is doing the Tea-Ellis road, and they’re talking about not even tearing up sections that are supposed to get done this year, and calling it quits and finishing where they’re at right now because they’re not going to get to it.  Hopefully they shift some of that man power over here.  Everybody’s way, way behind all across the state right now.  We might be stuck with this late into the winter season,” Weiland mentioned during the council meeting. Hwy115_Sept2018_2

The first phase of the project, the replacement of the south bridge on Highway 115 and highway replacement to 248th St., began in April of 2016.  That section was completed in a little over a year with the bridge and new road opening May of 2017.

The second phase of the $18.8 million Highway 115 project was the replacement of the Interstate 29 interchange at exit 98.  That portion of the project was re-opened to traffic on November 29th, 2017.

New Structures Completed for Dell Rapids Baseball/Softball

August 27, 2018 by Matt Larson, Big Sioux Media

Two new structures are installed and ready for use by baseball and softball players in Dell Rapids.  A brand new batting cage was completed that is located along the right field fence of Field E on the south side diamonds, and a new wooden scoreboard has been installed on Field A on the north side diamonds at City Park.NewDRBABattingCage

The batting cage was a joint effort between the Dell Rapids Baseball Association and Dell Rapids Softball Association to help provide more practice space for the increasing number of youth that are participating in baseball and softball in Dell Rapids.  The Dell Rapids City Council approved the construction and location of the new batting cage in a meeting back in February.  Throughout the summer, the boards worked with local companies and contractors to keep the costs as low as possible.  The Dell Rapids Baseball Association was also able to secure grants from the South Dakota VFW and Dells Community Foundation to help offset some costs.

DRBAManualScoreboard2018The new wooden manual scoreboard that was installed on Field A was the completion of an Eagle Scout project by Ethan Geraets.  It’s similar to the wooden scoreboard that was installed on Field F as part of an Eagle Scout project by Jack Prasek.
