Watchdog Girls Drop Two Games on Back-to-Back Nights

The Beresford Watchdog girls basketball team lost two games on back-to-back nights Friday, January 6th and Saturday, January 7th.  On Friday night Beresford traveled to Salem to play McCook Central/Montrose and on Saturday hosted the Flandreau Fliers.

McCook Central/Montrose 40, Beresford 37

The Watchdogs had a 23-16 lead at halftime, but the Cougars outscored Beresford 16-5 in the third quarter to take the lead which was enough for a 40-37 victory.  Beresford led 6-5 at the end of the first quarter and extended their lead to 23-16 by halftime.  The Cougars led 32-28 heading into the fourth quarter and maintained their lead the entire quarter.  The Watchdogs had a chance to tie the game at the buzzer.  After a steal of an inbound pass, Ella Merriman took a three at the buzzer, but the shot hit the back of the rim and fell away no good.

Beresford finished the game shooting 29% (14-48) overall, 13% (2-16) from three-point area, and 54% (7-13) from the free-throw line.  The Cougars shot 40% (16-40) from the field, 38% (6-16) from three-point area, and 2-7 from the free-throw line.

Savanna Beesen had 10 points and two rebounds.  Merriman finished with nine points, two rebounds, and five steals.  Autumn Namminga added six points.  Harly Koth ended with five points and four rebounds.

Flandreau 50, Beresford 25

The Fliers had two big quarters in Beresford to beat the Watchdogs on Saturday.  Flandreau had a 12-5 lead after the first quarter.  They then outscored Beresford 18-8 in the second quarter to extend their lead to 30-13.  The Watchdogs got the lead down to 12 points within the third quarter, but the Fliers led 37-21 heading into the fourth quarter.  Flandreau then outscored Beresford 13-4 in the final quarter.

The Watchdogs shot 24% (11-46) from the field, 14% (3-22) from three-point area, and 0-2 from the free-throw line.  The Fliers were 45% (18-40) overall, 40% (6-15) from three-point area, and 47% (8-17) from the free-throw line.

Merriman had six points and five rebounds.  Beesen finished with six points and two rebounds.  Lilly Sievert had three points and five rebounds.  Koth added two points and had six rebounds.  Macy Quartier, Irelyn Fichbohm, Kendra Ellis, and Namminga all had two points each.
